French government apologises to Liverpool for its ‘successive failures’ at Champions League final

The French government has written to Liverpool to apologise to their fans for the "successive failures" behind the Champions League final crowd-safety scandal that "may have brought back particularly painful memories" of the Hillsborough disaster. Amélie Oudéa-Castéra, the country's sports minister, wrote to the club in response to a letter by their chairman, Tom Werner, angrily rebuking her over her widely-discredited claim after the match that up to 40,000 supporters with fake tickets were to blame for the chaos. News of Oudéa-Castéra's letter emerged on the same day as the publication of the first formal report into the scandal, which found a catalogue of "failures" by French authorities – and not Liverpool fans with counterfeit tickets – were responsible. She wrote: "First and foremost, I would like to sincerely apologise to the Liverpool fans whose evening was ruined. We are conscious of the fact that many of them came from far away, often with their family and sometimes even young children, to support their team and attend a memorable game of football.
