iPhone 15 Pro Max Could Have Thinner Camera Bump and Smaller Footprint [Updated]

The iPhone 15 Pro Max will be thicker than its predecessor despite having a slightly reduced height and width, but it could offer a less protrusive camera rear array, according to newly shared CAD renders and dimensions.

ice universe iphone 15 pro max cad render accurate information about Apple’s plans in the past, shared the latest CAD renders and specific dimensions in a series of tweets earlier today.

The renders broadly align with other reports about the design of the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ models, showing a new chassis with slightly curved edges. The rendering lines help to convey the added curvature in the new design, as well as the thickness of the bezels, which are expected to be reduced compared to the iPhone 14 Pro Max.

According to Ice Universe’s dimensions, the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max’s footprint is smaller both in terms of height and width compared to the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max, but it is 5% thicker. The CAD renders and accompanying dimensions suggest that the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max will have a less protrusive camera bump than previously expected, being 0.59 mm shallower than that of the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max.

This means that while the iPhone , excluding the camera array, will ostensibly be 0.4 mm thicker than on the ‌iPhone 14 Pro‌ Max, the device as a whole, including the camera, will be 0.19 mm thinner.

As with several other ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ renders that have emerged, the volume and power buttons are missing, likely due to the fact that these devices are expected to make the switch to solid-state buttons this year.

The marginally reduced width of the ‌iPhone‌, combined with its curved edges, could make the device more comfortable to hold and the shallower camera bump could allow it to lie more stably on a surface. Overall, the dimensions indicate that the ‌iPhone 15 Pro‌ Max could differ from the design of its predecessor more than previously thought.

Recent leaks have exposed Apple’s new iPhone 15 and iPhone 15 Pro designs , but now precise dimensions have leaked for the iPhone 15 Plus and iPhone 15 Pro Max, and there’s a shock in store. A good one.

It comes from the dimensions of the iPhone 15 Pro Max. Leaked by reliable industry insider Ice Universe , they are 159.86 × 76.73 × 8.25 mm. When including the camera bump, the total thickness is 11.84 mm. These numbers sound very similar to the iPhone 14 Pro Max (160.7 x 77.6 x 7.85 mm/12.03 mm, with camera bump), but look more closely, and there’s one key difference.

Every iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max rumor to date has claimed: “ the iPhone 15 Pro’s camera bump is MASSIVE. ” But Ice Universe’s dimensions actually show that the camera hump will be smaller than last year. In isolation, the iPhone 14 Pro Max camera hump is 4.18 mm, while Ice Universe’s figures reveal it is 3.59 mm on the iPhone 15 Pro Max, a 15% reduction.

Interestingly, the iPhone 15 Pro Max camera hump is almost exactly the same size as the iPhone 13 Pro Max (3.6 mm). Fans had already complained that the iPhone 14 Pro Max camera hump was too big, so seeing it shrink by 15% rather than grow by around 20% (as previously rumored) adds up to a big difference.

Separately, 9to5Mac has also leaked precise dimensions for the iPhone 15 Plus, but there are no surprises here. The new iPhone allegedly measures 160.87 x 77.76 x 7.81 mm compared to its predecessor’s 160.84 x 78.07 x 7.79 mm. While the iPhone 15 Plus will be slightly taller, narrower and thicker, I doubt the differences will be noticeable in hand.

The good news for standard iPhone 15 buyers is that the new models will feature the modern pill-shaped cut-out, Dynamic Island, and slimmer bezels. As is now common though, more substantial upgrades will be reserved for the iPhone 15 Pro models, including a next-gen A17 chipset, WiFi 6E, solid-state buttons and a stunningly bright new display .

On the flip side, the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max are tipped for substantial price increases , while standard models will be unchanged, creating an even greater chasm between the two lines.

Google’s Next-gen Pixel 8 smartphone looks set to receive a significant low-light photography boost, according to a new report.

The report, published by 9to5Google , uncovers code within the latest version of the Google Camera app supporting a new enhanced Night Sight camera function exclusive to the forthcoming Pixel 8 Pro. According to the report, the Pixel 8 Pro Night Sight mode will gain the ability to use both rear cameras at the same time when zooming in at lower magnification levels.

The Pixel 7 Pro already uses this twin-camera technique, called multi-camera Super Res Zoom , to improve the quality of standard shots at zoom levels between 1x and 5x. However, this latest upgrade would bring Super Res Zoom to Night Sight shots for the first time.

Adding the output of a second camera will be of particular benefit to low-light photography as it will give a significant boost to the total amount of light that can be captured in any given exposure. However, as with standard multi-camera Super Res Zoom technology, the benefits of the second camera are confined to the central position of the image where there is overlap between the outputs of the two lenses.

Google will therefore need to deploy more advanced algorithms and new machine-learning models in order to provide a multi-camera Night Sight shot that doesn’t deteriorate visibly around the edges.

Google typically introduces new photographic capabilities with each generation of the Pixel smartphone. Some may eventually trickle down into older models, but others remain exclusives due to increased hardware requirements. It’s not possible to say at this point which category the new multi-camera Night Sight mode might occupy.

Either way, the Pixel 8 is shaping up to be an exciting release with a powerful new video upgrade also in the works.
