The perceived noise of gunfire sent crowds running during two of the country’s largest Pride Parades in New York City and San Francisco this weekend despite law enforcement confirming false alarms.

Despite videos showing Manhattan revelers storming away from the sound of what they thought was a shooting, NYPD Chief of Patrol Jeffrey Maddrey confirmed that there had been no shots fired in Washington Square Park, the green epicenter of the Pride celebrations. NYPD said a further investigation determined fireworks were set off at the 9.75-acre public park in Greenwich Village.

Days earlier, tens of thousands of protesters assembled at the park for a pro-abortion protest after the Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade. The crowd marched up 6th Avenue, and about two dozen protesters were arrested for blocking traffic near 42nd St., the New York Post reported. On Sunday, Planned Parenthood was the first contingent of the New York City Pride Parade .

In San Francisco, police officers assigned to the Civic Center area for the San Francisco Pride Festival responded at approximately 5:25 p.m. to a report of a shooting near 7th and Market Streets.

However, upon arrival, officers were unable to locate any victims or witnesses, and the police department said it was not immediately apparent if there was any merit to the shooting in the area. The department said officers remained on the scene to ensure the safety and security of Pride events.

The panic came on the heels of high-profile mass shootings in Uvalde, Texas, and Buffalo, New York.

This year was the first time pride parades in New York City and San Francisco made a full comeback since they were canceled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic .

Social media users at both events described chaotic scenes as the crowds began to stampede and people reportedly started running and screaming of shots fired.

Some users noted the recent shooting at a gay bar in Oslo, Norway. The Associated Press reported that the shooting killed two people and injured more than a dozen in a case of possible terrorism.

Last month, police in Idaho arrested more than 30 alleged members of the group called Patriot Front found packed into the back of a U-Haul near an LGBTQ event.

Eli Manning suggested he had high hopes for Daniel Jones as the New York Giants quarterback learns a new offense from a new head coach – his third in four years.

Manning had high praise for Brian Daboll, who is taking the reins from Joe Judge, and said he was excited to see what Jones can do in the new scheme.

“I think with Coach Daboll, and what they’re doing, and that staff, and (new GM) Joe Schoen, having been around the facility some, the atmosphere has changed,” Manning told the NFL Network on Friday. “So I’m excited for Daniel, I know he’s worked extremely hard, and you know, been through a lot of offenses, a lot of coaching changes, so hopefully this can be the right one.”

Daboll’s claim to fame was what he was able to do with Josh Allen while he was an offensive coordinator for the Buffalo Bills. Allen turned into a top-flight quarterback over the last two years. Jones and Allen are both 6-foot-5 with the ability to scoot.

The big difference has been Jones’ inability to stay healthy over the course of a 16- or 17-game season. The Giants quarterback has never played more than 14 games in a season since he became the full-time starter after Manning’s retirement. Over the course of three seasons, he’s recorded 8,398 yards with 45 touchdown passes and 29 interceptions.

Additionally, the Giants’ inability to find success at head coach has been an issue. Jones started with Pat Shurmur as a rookie in 2019 before the team eventually moved to Judge and later Daboll.

Manning played under Tom Coughlin for most of his career before the team went to Ben McAdoo and Shurmur.

“By my fifth year, I had been in the same offense the whole time, I knew it, I could coach it up, new guys are coming in, I was speaking the same language as my offensive coordinator and as (former head coach Tom) Coughlin, and kind of preaching the same stuff,” Manning added. “And with (Jones), it’s all new, and it’s learning, and he’s consistently trying to learn and learn and learn, and it just takes some time before it all sinks in.”

Jones is entering a prove-it year with the Giants. The team did not pick up his fifth-year option, and it could be now or never for him to really step up and make a difference for New York.

Daniel Jones motivated by lack of success in NFL with Giants: ‘It weighs on me a great deal’

June 27, 2022 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Danielle Parhizkaran/NorthJersey.com / USA TODAY NETWORK

Daniel Jones is well aware 2022 is a “make it or break it” year with the New York Giants — along with his time as a starting quarterback in the NFL. Jones hasn’t started his NFL career the way he liked, with numerous fumbles and the piling up of losses hindering his progress to succeed in the league.

Jones gets a fresh start with new head coach Brian Daboll and offensive coordinator Mike Kafka in 2022, even though time is short to impress the organization. After all, general manager Joe Schoen and this current front office and coaching staff didn’t draft him.

“The lack of success? Um, yeah, it weighs on me a great deal,” Jones said, via the New York Post . “When you put a lot of time and effort into something and you don’t see the results, I think that’s tough when you’re doing anything. Playing football in the NFL, playing football in New York, I think there’s a heavy weight to that.

“I and the whole team feel that and we’re working as hard as we can to avoid being in this situation in the future. Yeah, it weighs on me heavy.”

Jones struggled in his third year with the Giants, as he completed 64.3% of his passes for 2,428 yards with 10 touchdowns to seven interceptions for an 84.8 passer rating. In three seasons, Jones has completed 62.8% of his passes to 45 touchdowns and 29 interceptions (84.3 rating).

A poor offensive line hasn’t helped Jones succeed in the NFL , but Jones has 36 fumbles in 38 games, and the Giants are just 12-25 in his starts. Jones has 49 turnovers since the start of the 2019 season, tied for third-most in the league (only Jared Goff and Baker Mayfield have more).

The Giants have been one of the worst franchises in the NFL during the majority of Jones’ tenure — and well before him. The Giants are 22-59 since the start of the 2017 season with no playoff appearances, as the .272 win percentage is tied with the New York Jets for the worst in the league. New York hasn’t won a playoff game since Super Bowl XLVI — back in the 2011 season.

“I think I have plenty of motivation,” Jones said. “I feel I work hard, I’ve worked hard before, and I’ve always worked hard for myself and worked hard for my teammates. I don’t think that changes, really. It is what it is, and I’ll keep doing what I’ve been doing and improve and refine my process.”

2019 MLB Home Run Derby: Projecting the ideal field with Josh Bell, Luke Voit and Vladimir Guerrero Jr. headlining

June 12, 2019 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

In less than a month, we’ll be in the All-Star break and that means lots of things, including the fact that we’re closing in on one of the most entertaining parts of the MLB season (now that they fixed the format and put in a clock): the Home Run Derby. People are starting to talk about it, so let’s run down who would be in an ideal field.

Some of my personal rules:

  • I need at least one player from the home stadium. The most fun Derby finishes have been in Cincinnati when Todd Frazier won and last season in D.C. when Bryce Harper made a late run to beat Kyle Schwarber .
  • Moonshots are the most fun. I want prodigious bombs over and over. Sorry, Tommy La Stella .
  • There’s subjectivity here. I might think some players aren’t quite as fun to watch hit BP as others. Leading the league right now doesn’t mean I think a player is going to be incredibly fun in the Derby. Sorry in advance, Christian Yelich fans.
  • Generally speaking, I would avoid players who have done it before. Sorry to my favorite player in baseball, Javier Baez .
  • Not every player wants to do it. If a player has publicly declined before, I likely won’t be picking him. Giancarlo Stanton , for example, has said he doesn’t want to participate in the event any more.

Onto my field of eight, in no particular order.

Carlos Santana

As noted, we need a hometown hero and Santana’s the best they got now that Jose Ramirez has fallen apart. Some might argue for Francisco Lindor , but he’s said he doesn’t want to do it while Santana has said he does. Fair enough. Easy first pick.

Luke Voit

He absolutely destroys baseballs, he’s a Yankee (let’s face it, Yankee Haters, you know they move the needle nationally) and he wants to be in it . Bring him! He’s hit one 470 feet this season.

Franmil Reyes

Easy and major power to all fields, Reyes will be an unknown for a decent portion of the viewing audience but he’s so fun he’ll turn some heads. He ranks ninth in average exit velocity, so we know he can crush the baseball.

Pete Alonso

Alonso is among the league leaders in home runs, owns other-worldly power and he’s from a New York team. He checks a lot of boxes here, no?

Josh Bell

A huge breakout season surely has Bell going to the game anyway and Pittsburgh isn’t too far away from Cleveland. Surely Bell will have some supporters in the house, should Santana bow out early. Of note, Bell has hit one 474 feet this season and ranks third in the majors in average exit velocity.

Daniel Vogelbach

Seriously, just take a look. How can he not be in this?

Vladimir Guerrero Jr.

He’s going to be one of the most fun players in baseball for years to come, so let’s get the entire continent a look at him doing his thing on this stage. Of note, his average home run distance of 427 feet ranks third in baseball and he has the single hardest hit ball this season with a 118.9 mph single .

Joey Gallo

Arguably, no one in baseball has more raw power than Gallo and he’s having a career year. He also leads the majors in average exit velocity. Unfortunately, he’s hurt right now and might not make it. If he does, though …

If Gallo is still hurt …

Austin Riley

This event is a perfect showcase for all the young talent in the league and Riley has been unbelievable since coming up from the minors several weeks ago.

UC Law Dean: Roe v. Wade Reversal ‘Turns Back the Clock’ to When Women Were ‘Treated as Property’

June 27, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

The chancellor and dean of the University of California Hastings College of the Law in San Francisco, California, reacted to the Supreme Court overruling Roe v. Wade on Friday by claiming that the ruling effectively “turns back the clock” to “when women did not have the right to vote” and were “treated as property,” adding, “I tremble for my granddaughters.”

“Today’s Supreme Court decision overturning Roe v. Wade is devastating on many levels,” Dean David Faigman proclaimed in an open letter, before claiming that women not being able to as easily kill their unborn children means the clock has been turned back to another century.

Abortion-rights activist Caroline Rhodes protests in front of the Supreme Court building following the announcement to the Dobbs v Jackson Women's Health Organization ruling on June 25, 2022 in Washington, DC. “This decision turns back the clock not just to 1973, but to a century when women did not have the right to vote and were, largely, treated as property,” Faigman wrote. “I tremble for my granddaughters.”

The dean then argued that “those with religious objections to abortion do not have the right to impose them on others,” before calling into question the legitimacy of the Supreme Court.

“As a dean and professor of constitutional law, this opinion — and, indeed, the composition of the Court itself, which is a product of political gerrymandering — raises basic questions regarding the legitimacy of the Court itself,” Faigman said.

On Friday, the Supreme Court overruled Roe v. Wade , holding in the Dobbs case that the Constitution does not include a right to abortion and returning the issue of abortion laws and regulations to state legislatures.

“On the eve of Pride weekend, Justice Thomas’s concurring opinion in Dobbs underscores the breadth of the potential challenges to other fundamental and hard-won rights, including marriage equality,” Faigman lamented in his letter.

Faigman concluded by pledging to use his role as the leader of one of California’s most prestigious law schools to help prepare future lawyers and policymakers to “grapple with the outcome of today’s decision.”

“UC Hastings is committed more than ever to its core mission to prepare diverse students to advance the rule of law and pursue justice,” he wrote. “Our students are the future lawyers and policymakers who will need to grapple with the outcome of today’s decision.”

Faigman is just one of the many members of academia having a public meltdown over the Supreme Court’s life-saving decision.

After the ruling, college and university professors took to social media, where they issued unhinged diatribes in response to the reality that not as many killings will transpire in a post-Roe America.
