IPL 2023: Gujarat Titans players set to snap up Purple and Orange caps this year

May 27, 2023 by economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Synopsis

Gujarat Titans’ players are dominating the Orange and Purple cap charts ahead of the Indian Premier League 2023 final. Shubman Gill leads the top-scorer table for the Orange cap, while the leaders for the Purple cap are Mohammed Shami, Rashid Khan, and Mohit Sharma, all of whom represent Gujarat Titans. Any one among the Gujarat Titans’ bowlers could win this coveted prize. The Orange cap is awarded to the highest scorer, and the Purple cap is given to the highest wicket-taker. The prize comes with a cash prize of Rs 15 lakhs, each, in addition to the cap.

Ahead of the final of the 2023 edition of the Indian Premier League, players from finalists and defending champions Gujarat Titans are leading the record charts for both the Orange and Purple caps.

Shubman Gill’s purple patch in this year’s tournament continued into the semi-final of the cup, with the batsman scoring a century against Mumbai Indians on Friday to seal the top spot on the top-scorer chart, overtaking Royal Challengers Bengaluru batsman Faf Du Plessis . The highest scorer over the course of the season is awarded the Orange cap at the end of the tournament.

On the other end, Gujarat Titans’ bowlers occupy the top three spots on the bowling charts. Mohammed Shami (28 wickets), Rashid Khan (27 wickets) and Mohit Sharma (24 wickets) are in the running for the Purple cap . With Gujarat booking their place in the final, any one of these bowlers could snap up the award.

Gill smashed 129 runs off of just 60 balls to break past the 800-run mark, while also marking his third century in this year’s tournament. The batsman from Punjab has scored 851 runs, so far and could add to that tally in Sunday’s final game against Chennai Super Kings.

With none of Chennai’s batsmen or bowlers close to the top spots on the charts, the Titans’ players are set to grab the individual honours this year.

Players winning the Purple and Orange caps get a Rs 15 lakh cash prize, each, in addition to the cap.

In 2022, the Orange cap was snapped up by Jos Buttler, who scored 863 runs for Rajasthan Royals, while the Purple cap went to Yuzvendra Chahal, who took 27 wickets, also for Rajasthan.

World Bank reveals Pacific countries at high risk of debt distress

May 26, 2023 by www.stuff.co.nz Leave a Comment

STUFF & JOANNE HOLDEN
The Cook Islands are a good case study of the effect that Chinese money can have.

Six Pacific island nations are at a high risk of debt distress, the World Bank warns.

In a report released last week, the World Bank said government spending in response to the Covid-19 pandemic was partly to blame.

The Raising Pasifika report said fiscal consolidation was needed in Kiribati, Marshall Islands, Federated States of Micronesia, Samoa, Tonga and Tuvalu.

The report found that those countries lacked domestic debt markets and access to international capital markets.

The Covid crisis, combined with overlapping shocks from natural disasters and global inflation, risked reversing a decade of progress in building human capital across the Pacific, the report stated.

It rated Vanuatu at medium risk, while Palau and Nauru’s debt was sustainable.

“While public debt levels, as a share of GDP, remain modest across most of the region, the economic geography and volatile revenue bases mean debt distress risks remain elevated,” the report said.

“Debt has surged in the region since 2019 as the tourism-dependent economies were hit by Covid border closures, trade was hurt by logistical challenges and weather events caused damage.”

The bank’s Pacific director, Stephen Ndegwa, said reducing debt, strengthening revenue and improving the quality of government spending were critical areas to address.

He said continued access to grants, in line with pre-pandemic trends , was also essential to find capital investment projects for sustainable development and climate resilience.

“Together with more efficient spending, improvements to tax collection must be a priority for Pacific governments to ensure individuals and businesses are contributing their fair share to the region’s economies,” Ndegwa said.

“Pacific countries should allocate more to social assistance and protection measures. These investments would help reduce poverty and inequality , while also supporting communities in tough times.

“This includes in the aftermath of climate-related disasters or major economic shocks, such as the Covid-19 pandemic and the recent natural disasters in Tonga and Vanuatu,” he said.

Fiji has also been urged to take urgent action to reduce its debt burden.

If left unchecked, the World Bank warned Fiji’s debt levels could threaten the country’s ongoing economic recovery from the pandemic and sustainable economic development.

Fiji’s Finance Minister Professor Biman Prasad welcomed the World Bank’s Public Expenditure Review , saying: “This comes at a time when the new government strives to get Fiji back on a path of fiscal sustainability and financial discipline.

“The findings of the Public Expenditure Review will serve as an important consideration and input in this entire process of fiscal consolidation,” Prasad said.

The report also offered recommendations of varying degrees of revenue increases and public expenditure cuts to reduce Fiji’s debt to 50% of GDP by 2032.

Senior World Bank official Stefano Mocci said they remained committed to Fiji’s development priorities, including working together towards the Pacific nation’s economic recovery and resilience strengthening to better withstand future shocks.

Mocci said the bank has six active projects in Fiji, totalling US$414 million (NZ$862m), on transport, health, climate change, tourism, and digital connection.

WWE Night of Champions 2023: See predictions, match timings

May 28, 2023 by economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Synopsis

WWE Night of Champions 2023 starts on Sunday and here are the predictions.

The Clash of Champions event in Saudi Arabia promises an exciting tag team match as Roman Reigns teams up with Solo Sikoa to challenge the undisputed tag team champions, Kevin Owens and Sami Zayn. Reigns, having lost faith in The Usos, aims to accelerate The Bloodline’s downfall. But, that’s not it as the Night of Champions has a lot to offer.

WWE Night of Champions will stream live on Peacock on May 27, 2023 at 1 pm ET.

Brock Lesnar vs Cody Rhodes

In the final Raw before Night of Champions, Lesnar severely injured Rhodes’ arm, providing an opportunity for Lesnar to regain his win without diminishing Rhodes’ status as a top talent. Since Rhodes’ next big program remains uncertain, extending the feud with Lesnar makes sense. The prediction leans in favor of Brock Lesnar emerging victorious in this bout.

World Heavyweight Championship – Seth Rollins vs AJ Styles

Although Styles has the potential to capture another world title at age 45, his momentum seems lacking unless there is a significant storyline development like an O.C. heel turn. On the other hand, Rollins has been on fire and is long overdue for a top spot after supporting other talents in recent years. Therefore, the prediction is in favor of Seth Rollins winning the vacant title.

Intercontinental Championship – Gunther (c) vs Mustafa Ali

Gunther has been wreaking havoc on the SmackDown brand and, with his move to Raw, a fresh roster of challengers awaits him. The reign of Gunther will eventually come to an end, but it should be through a compelling program rather than a simple victory in a battle royal. Therefore, the prediction is that Gunther will retain the title.

Raw Women’s Championship – Bianca Belair (c) vs Asuka

Belair is a valuable and marketable champion, while Asuka remains one of the few legitimate threats in the division. However, Asuka’s recent booking hasn’t positioned her strongly enough to dethrone Belair dethrone Belair at Night of Champions. The prediction is that Bianca Belair will retain the Raw Women’s Championship.

SmackDown Women’s Championship – Rhea Ripley (c) vs Natalya

Natalya’s inclusion in the match stems from her involvement when Ripley continued to attack Dana Brooke after their one-on-one encounter. It is unlikely that Ripley’s relatively young title reign will end against Natalya, who is no longer a significant contender for the world championship. Therefore, the prediction is that Rhea Ripley will retain the SmackDown Women’s Championship.

Becky Lynch vs Trish Stratus

WWE aims to extend this story to SummerSlam, possibly with occasional appearances by Stratus between Night of Champions and the big summer pay-per-view event. To achieve this, Stratus is expected to secure a cheap win over Lynch. While Lynch should ultimately emerge victorious in this historic-ish match, it sets the stage for an intriguing world title program with Rhea Ripley. Thus, the prediction is that Becky Lynch will win the match.

What’s new in 2023’s ‘The Little Mermaid’ from the Disney Original? Here’s all you need to know

May 28, 2023 by economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Synopsis

‘The Little Mermaid’ is coming back and several changes have been made to fit it to the modern world – although with roots connected to Disney Original.

Disney has made adjustments to its live-action remakes in the past, ranging from harmless alterations to meaningful additions. For instance, changes have included modifying song lyrics or removing musical elements entirely, as well as providing new context and standout moments for characters such as Mowgli in The Jungle Book (2016), Genie in Aladdin (2019), and Captain Hook in Peter Pan & Wendy.

Similarly, The Little Mermaid (2023) introduces a series of minor yet effective changes to the familiar animated story. Let’s delve into the alterations that distinguish the 2023 adaptation from the 1989 film.

Ariel’s Sisters Embrace Leadership Roles

In the remake, Triton’s daughters are portrayed as active leaders in the underwater kingdom, while Ariel goes on her own adventures.

Scuttle the Gannet

The live-action adaptation replaces the seagull Scuttle with Scuttle the Gannet, allowing for underwater communication and more comic relief.

Ursula’s Family Connection

The remake reveals that Ursula is Triton’s sister and Ariel’s aunt, adding depth to their strained relationship and showcasing Ursula’s heightened ruthlessness.

A Tragic Origin for Ariel’s Mother

The 2023 version suggests that Ariel’s mother was intentionally killed by a human, adding intrigue to her death.

Eric’s Orphan Status

Prince Eric is portrayed as an orphan in the live-action film, motivating his desire to explore the ocean and potentially discover his true origins.

New Original Songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda

Lin-Manuel Miranda contributes three original songs to the film, including a power ballad for Eric, a captivating internal monologue for Ariel, and a rap number titled “The Scuttlebutt.”

Ariel’s Triumph over Ursula

In the 2023 version, Ariel defeats Ursula using a shipwreck brought to the surface by Ursula’s typhoon, saving Eric herself.

A New Beginning for Ariel and Eric

The film suggests that Ariel and Eric’s union as humans is just the start of their exciting journey exploring uncharted waters.

IPL 2023 Final Preview: Departing Dhoni faces red-hot Gill in IPL final

May 28, 2023 by economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Synopsis

The Indian Premier League (IPL) cricket final is set to take place between Chennai Super Kings and the Gujarat Titans, with Chennai skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni aiming to win a record-equalling fifth title. The Titans will be led by Hardik Pandya and feature last year’s player of the tournament, Shubman Gill, whose third century helped them defeat Mumbai Indians in the semi-finals. The two most in-form bowlers in the tournament, Rashid Khan and Mohammed Shami, will also be playing for the Titans. Sunday’s game will be Dhoni’s last as a player for Chennai.

In what is likely his last game as a player for Chennai Super Kings , skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni – ten time IPL finalist and four-time champion – is set to face defending champions Gujarat Titans.

All eyes are set to be on the Indian cricketing stalwart as he aims to lead his franchise to a record-equalling fifth title; Mumbai Indians are the only team to have won the tournament five times.

Facing Dhoni are last year’s winners and straight second time finalists Gujarat Titans, playing on home soil at Ahmedabad ‘s Narendra Modi Stadium.

Spearheading the Titans’ attack is opener Shubman Gill, who just scored his third century – on Friday – at the same venue as the final. Gill’s three IPL tons have all come in his last four innings, his latest a brutal 129 off 60 balls to demolish five-time winners Mumbai Indians and take him to the top of the scoring charts.

“He would certainly be the example you would like to use towards young players on how to bat,” Gujarat’s director of cricket and former England batsman Vikram Solanki said of Gill on Saturday. “If you are trying to model yourself on a particular player he has all of the qualities of a world-class player.”

Gujarat, led by Hardik Pandya, have extended a fairytale journey which began with a title in their debut season last year, when Pandya raised the Cup in Ahmedabad in front of a record 101,566 fans at the 132,000-capacity stadium.

“We have to play good cricket, put in our 100 percent,” said Pandya. “Knockouts could go either way.”

In Gujarat’s arsenal are also the league’s most in-form bowlers, with Afghan spinner Rashid Khan and pacer Mohammed Shami bagging 55 wickets between them.

The duo are in a tight race for the purple cap – given to the player with the most wickets at the end of the season – with Shami on 28 and Rashid on 27.

Sunday’s final will be a repeat of the first play-off match, earlier in the week, in which Dhoni & Co. came out on top by 15 runs.

Gujarat took the hard route to the final, facing Mumbai Indians in a second playoff game. But, led by Gill, the team trashed Rohit Sharma’s Mumbai team by 62 runs.

“It’s really hard not to look too far ahead and dream of winning it again,” Chennai coach Stephen Fleming told reporters.

“You got to stay very present of what you are going to do against Gujarat, an excellent side, most consistent side throughout the competition. We can’t afford to dream too much.”

In the season that is likely Dhoni’s last dance, the wicketkeeper batsman has opted to come in at the end of his team’s innings to help finish things off, with the 41-year-old no longer the athlete he used to be when he started out as Chennai’s captain in 2008, when the tournament first began. On reports of his retirement, Dhoni said he would always be available in any capacity for the team.

Openers Devon Conway (625 runs) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (564) have provided Chennai with good starts, and all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja came into his own in the team’s last win.

Indian fast bowler Tushar Deshpande and Sri Lankan quick Matheesha Pathirana have led the bowling charge with 21 and 17 wickets.
