3 clubs promoted to premier league

I’ve won the League Cup in England & Scotland and managed bars in Marbella & Essex… now I do something VERY different

March 23, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

A FORMER League Cup winner in both England and Scotland has now hit the back of the net doing something very different after a foray into the nightlife of Marbella and Essex.

This former roving left-back was born in Hartlepool in 1984 and was a graduate of Middlesbrough ’s academy alongside future England winger Stewart Downing .

But international recognition also came our man’s way also, with his displays at youth level earning him Three Lions’ caps of his own for the under-16s.

Despite a first-team squad packed with superstar names such as Croatian striker Alen Boksic, Brazilian World Cup winner Juninho, now England boss Gareth Southgate and Paul Ince, the defender soon found himself sitting alongside those famous faces in the Boro dressing-room.

And it did not take long for him to get an opportunity under then boss Steve McClaren – and he even marked it with a debut goal.

The player we are talking about is David Murphy, who burst on to the scene with a strike against Northampton in the League Cup – a competition he enjoyed great success in both sides of the border – back in 2001.

More appearances in the cups followed for the then teen that season before he made his Premier League bow off the bench in a 2-1 win over Fulham.

Another eight appearances followed in the next campaign but his progress was halted by a broken foot at the start of the 2003/04 season.

Once recovered, he headed down to League One with Barnsley in order to regain his fitness, playing ten times and scoring twice for the Terriers.

Now with a thirst for first-team football and his contract up at Boro, he headed north to join Scottish Premiership side Hibernian that summer.

Murphy went on to become a legend at Easter Road throughout his four years there and played the full 90 minutes as they thrashed Kilmarnock 5-1 in the 2007 Scottish League Cup final.

Later that year he etched his name further into Hibernian folklore as his strike sealed a famous 1-0 victory over Rangers at Ibrox to send them top of the league for the first time in seven years.

His performances were catching the eye of several clubs back down over the border, and the lure of the Premier League proved too hard to resist when Birmingham City coughed up £1.5million to sign him in January 2008.

Unfortunately, he was unable to stop the Blues from being relegated but he played a key role in their instant promotion back from the Championship.

Agonisingly for Murphy, he suffered a broken kneecap and missed the entire first campaign back in the top-flight.

But he celebrated his return to action with a goal in, yes you guessed it, the League Cup in a win over Rochdale that helped set Brum on the road to glory.

Birmingham went on to lift the trophy that season, memorably beating Arsenal 2-1 at Wembley, where Murphy was an unused substitute.

That also secured them European football for the first time in 50 years, and he was back amongst the goals in 2-1 victory at Club Brugge in the Europa League.

Birmingham also suffered relegation again in the same season as their cup success, but Murphy scored seven goals to help them reach the play-offs and earn a new two-year contract.

He was then sidelined with knee cartilage damage for ten months but bounced back again to return to the first-team fold.

However, an adverse reaction in his knee meant he had to go under the knife again before further injury setbacks followed, leading to him announcing his retirement two days before his 30th birthday.

During his playing career, Murphy invested some of his money earned into bars in both Marbella and Essex.

But after meeting businessman Garry Wells, the two are now partners of the highly-successful Wells CRS commercial refurb firm who work across the country.

And he is loving life more than he ever did out on the pitch.

Murphy told the Northern Echo : “The last few years have been fantastic. It comes down to trust and me and Garry trust each other 100 per cent.

“We both have the same ideas and thought processes on how we want to grow and expand. It is rare in a partnership.

“For me it is a completely different world to what I was used to but I wouldn’t have it any other way. Even when I played I didn’t get wrapped up in the limelight, I just wanted to concentrate on football.

“But now I am away from that world, I am still dealing with lads on a day-to-day basis and it’s been easy to transfer skills and qualities gained from my playing career into this field. Team morale is key.”

He added: “I get a buzz dealing with the clients, keeping them all happy, and it is all worth it when you see the finished product.

Apple TV+’s award-winning series Ted Lasso recently premiered and many fans are curious to know about the fate of the fictional club at the heart of the drama. Season three saw the club’s fortunes continuing to change with hopes they could make their way up the league table. Although fans will have to continue to watch the series to see if AFC Richmond will be the winning team, bookmakers OLBG have given the team odds of 5/6 to be crowned in glory come the final episode.

This means they have a 54 percent chance of winning the Premier League , according to the stats.

Their rivals in the show West Ham, also have odds of 5/6 to win the league in the third season, which suggests it’s going to be a close race to see who will be victorious between the two.

Jake Ashton, an Entertainment Betting Specialist at OLBG , said: “AFC Richmond got relegated at the end of the first season, but were promoted back to the Premier League at the end of the second, and along the way, Ted Lasso vowed he would win the ‘whole thing’.

“However, following Nate Shelley’s departure from AFC Richmond at the end of season two to join rival club West Ham United, pressure will be mounting on Lasso’s team as they try to deal with the betrayal.”

Ashton went on to say: “The latest trailer for the series shows AFC Richmond facing West Ham with Nate Shelley looking happy in the majority of the images.

“Because of this, Richmond are the big outsider to win the face off with only a 25 percent chance of doing so.

“A loss against their rivals will sting, but Team Lasso will have their eyes on the biggest prize, the Premier League trophy.”

The season three trailer gave hints all was not well for AFC Richmond with all the characters facing some tough challenges.

AFC Richmond’s coach Ted Lasso (played by Jason Sudeikis) was reeling from Nate Shelley’s (Nick Mohammed) decision to go over arch-nemesis Rupert Mannion (Anthony Head) and rival team West Ham United.

Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) made up the shortfall and worked alongside Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) to get the team up to scratch and hold their own in the Premier League.

Ashton said about the teaser and what it could mean for AFC Richmond’s chance of success: “While the series three trailer shows things seem to be falling apart both on and off the pitch for the AFC Richmond, the club will be sure to give it their best shot anyway.

“The central theme of Ted Lasso is that people can always grow and improve if they put in the effort, so bookies are not counting out Team Lasso with odds at 5/6 they will win the Premier League this season.”

There have also been reports season three could be the final outing for the multi-Emmy Award-winning series.

Lead star Sudeikis seemed to confirm as much recently when he said the writers wanted to tell a three-season arc story.

The news is likely to come as a disappointment to some fans but appears to be a narrative decision made at the start of the series.

The American actor told Deadline: “This is the end of this story that we wanted to tell, that we were hoping to tell, that we loved to tell.”

He said it was “flattering” fans were clamouring for more and hoped viewers would understand why the show couldn’t go any further come the finale.

Sudeikis added: “But until that time comes, I will appreciate the curiosity beyond what we’ve come up with so far.”

This suggests, AFC Richmond may finally get the win audiences have been hoping for and ultimately it would be a satisfying way for the series to end with the underdogs coming out on top.

Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham sign striker from league above with superb announcement video

March 23, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham have delivered another amusing transfer announcement video.

The National League side have seen one of the fastest growing surges of popularity ever since the Deadpool and X-Men star bought the club alongside Rob McElhenney in 2021 . They have already seen the club come within a whisker of League Two and also enjoyed a thrilling run to the FA Cup 4th round this year.

However, as you would expect with two Hollywood stars at the helm, Wrexham’s social media activities have been very entertaining. And they carried on their streak of bringing constant value when they announced their latest new recruit.

The club recently signed League Two star Billy Waters from Barrow. Waters’ arrival is a move which will bulk up their attacking line and give them fresh energy and firepower that will surely help their push for promotion into the Football League.

And it’s safe to say, the club gave him the Hollywood treatment when he arrived at the club. His announcement video features a player character of himself on iconic computer game FIFA 23.

Do you think we will see Wrexham in the Football League very soon? Let us know in the comments section below

His character can be seen negotiating a deal as part of the game’s ‘Manager Mode’ format, before pulling on the red of Wrexham. The camera then pans out to see Waters controlling the game himself while smiling at the camera.

“Welcome to ‘Rest of World’, Billy Waters” the club’s social media team wrote on their Twitter page. This was in reference to the category Wrexham were placed into when the FIFA creative team were persuaded to make the Red Dragons and include them on the game.

Technically, the Welsh side should not be in the game at all, as National League sides are not included. However, such is their popularity across the country and the United States, thanks to Reynolds’ ‘Welcome to Wrexham’ documentary, FIFA decided to make a team for them.

However, with no National League teams on the game, FIFA placed the team into the ‘Rest of World’ category. As it stands, Wrexham will not need to be placed into that obscure category next year as they are on course for promotion to League Two.

Ryan Reynolds’ Wrexham dealt blow in promotion push days after rival boss concedes title

March 22, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Wrexham have suffered a major blow in their promotion push after Notts County boss Luke Williams had conceded the title to them.

The National League leaders, who are owned by Hollywood actors Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney , have lost first-choice goalkeeper Rob Lainton to injury for the rest of the season. He’ll be replaced by veteran shot stopper Mark Howard, 36.

Lainton was forced off at half-time of their 2-1 away win at Bromley on Saturday (March 18) after damaging knee ligaments. Manager Phil Parkinson has confirmed: “Rob just jarred his knee with the last kick of the first half.

“He is going to be out for six to eight weeks so realistically, he is out for the season.”

Wrexham drew three points clear of County at the weekend as their title rivals dropped points on their travels at Barnet, and they also have a game in hand.

“The title race is not realistic any more for us. Even if we win there, we still can’t close the gap enough for it to be realistic,” Williams said after their 1-1 draw.

Do you want to see Wrexham in the Football League? Let us know in the comments section.

“We just have to focus on making sure that we perform so brilliantly that we protect our mentality and that we don’t feel sorry for ourselves.”

But he may now be re-thinking his stance with Lainton likely missing Wrexham’s remaining eight fixtures. Howard has made 37 appearances in all competitions this season having joined as a free agent from Carlisle United last summer.

Many fans have been unconvinced by his performances, though, and have urged Parkinson to bring in another keeper on an emergency deal. Ex-Premier League star Ben Foster was approached by the Dragons last summer.

Chelsea fans want Graham Potter sacked as he takes part in skit for hit show Ted Lasso

March 23, 2023 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

Chelsea fans have joked Graham Potter’s involvement in a skit to promote the third season of Ted Lasso should be a sackable offence.

Potter starred in a skit where, speaking to the camera, he spoke about how he’s ready to welcome Roy Kent back to Stamford Bridge. In the series, Kent is the gruff ageing hero of AFC Richmond, who once won the Champions League with Chelsea.

However, after retiring, and a sweary appearance on Soccer Saturday, Kent remerges as a coach for Richmond. And season three pics up as Richmond have battled their way back to the Premier League .

One fan tweeted: “Sackable offence alone,” with a number of crying emojis.

“The fact that this actually sounds identical to most of his pre-match interviews concerns me,” a second added. While a third tweeted: “When we get relegated but Graham Potter wins an Emmy for the best supporting actor…”

“Wtf, we’re a comedy club now,” a fourth added. While another tweeted: “Ted is a better manager, that’s the irony here. We would lose, maybe draw, with AFC Richmond…”

What do you think of Graham Potter staring in the skit? Let us know in the comments section

Chelsea are currently struggling for results, and Potter has failed to turn around the performances of the Blues since he replaced Thomas Tuchel in September.

The Blues are currently 10th, and Potter’s side even, albeit briefly, slipped outside of the top half of the table on Saturday. However, they are through to the Champions League quarter-finals and have a mouthwatering two-legged tie against Real Madrid in store.
