Vietnam announces 2 more Covid-19 deaths, aged 33 and 47

August 10, 2020 by hanoitimes.vn Leave a Comment

The Hanoitimes – The two patients are the youngest victims in Vietnam so far.

Two women diagnosed with Covid-19, aged 33 and 47, died on August 10, taking Vietnam’s pandemic death toll to 13, according to the Ministry of Health (MoH).

Both patients are residents of Danang, the national outbreak epicenter now, and had suffered several serious pre-existing illnesses.

The first victim, Patient No.430, was a 33-year-old female with late-stage kidney failure, heart failure, sepsis, and hypertension.

She felt fatigue and shortness of breath and was referred to Danang Hospital on July 23. The patient was isolated and sampled for coronavirus testing and the result came positive on July 26.

She was transferred to Hue Central General Hospital in the neighboring province of Thua Thien-Hue on July 30 where she was placed on artificial blood filtration and then on a ventilator.

She was intubated and put on mechanical ventilation on August 1 before getting connected to ECMO, a form of out-side-the-body life support, two days later. Her conditions continued worsening and she died at 0:30 on August 10.

The second fatality was Patient No.737, a 47-year-old woman, also with late-stage kidney failure, heart failure and hypertension.

On July 27, she tested negative for the coronavirus while in quarantine, but a second test on August 4 turned positive. She was transferred to Danang Hospital and then to Hoa Vang district’s medical center on August 6.

She suffered from respiratory failure on August 9 and had to be put on a ventilator. She died at 1:15 on August 10 after having gone into a deep coma.

The two patients are the youngest victims in Vietnam. The country has documented 841 coronavirus infections since January 23 when it registered the first-ever Covid-19 patient, the MoH said.

All of Vietnam’s 13 Covid-19 deaths so far had underlying conditions like kidney failure, heart failure, cancer, and hypertension. Among them, two were below 50 years of age, two above 50, and the rest over 60.

First four patients in Danang recover from Covid-19

Also on August 10, Patients No.423, 424, 441 and 442 recovered from Covid-19 and are the first people to be cured since the pandemic resurgence late in July, according to the MoH.

Dr. Le Thanh Phuc, director of Danang Lung Hospital, said that three had negative third test results for coronavirus.
After leaving the hospital, they will be isolated at home for 14 days under the supervision of medical staff.

Patient No.424, aged 55, is living in Ngu Hanh Son district, said she is very happy to be reunited with her family. “I would like to thank the doctors who have worked so hard to look after Covid-19 patients like me,” she said.

According to the Danang Department of Health, the city currently treats 242 Covid-19 patients; so far many have tested negative one to four times.

The health ministry has confirmed 847 Covid-19 cases so far, 399 of them have recovered.

Singapore retail sales fall at steepest pace in 12 years as COVID-19 deters shoppers

April 3, 2020 by www.channelnewsasia.com Leave a Comment

SINGAPORE: Singapore’s retail sales in February fell at the steepest pace in more than 12 years on a month-on-month basis as consumption fell across categories such as apparel and cosmetics due to the coronavirus pandemic.

On a seasonally adjusted basis, retail sales declined 8.9 per cent in February from the previous month, data from the Department of Statistics (SingStat) showed on Friday (Apr 3). This is the biggest drop since July 2007.

Excluding motor vehicles, retail sales declined 11.2 per cent on a seasonally adjusted month-on-month basis.

“The decrease is mainly attributed to larger year-on-year declines in retail industries selling discretionary items, due to the decline in tourist arrivals and lower domestic consumption as a result of the COVID-19 outbreak,” said SingStat.

Year-on-year, retail sales fell 8.6 per cent. Excluding motor vehicles, the figure was -10.2 per cent.

Retail sales for most segments fell, with the exception of supermarkets, petrol service stations, motor vehicles and furniture.

On a monthly basis, apparel and footwear took the largest hit at -34.5 per cent, followed by watches and jewellery at -30.7 per cent and department stores at -23.8 per cent.

Restaurants and food caterers also recorded declines in sales of 33.9 per cent and 24.8 per cent respectively compared to the previous month, while sales at fast food outlets grew 3.2 per cent.

The estimated total retail sales value in February was about S$3.1 billion. Of these, online retail sales made up an estimated 7.4 per cent.

Online retail sales of the computer and telecommunications equipment, furniture and household equipment industries and supermarkets and hypermarkets made up 30.4 per cent, 14 per cent and 8.5 per cent of the total sales of their respective industry.

Singapore reported its fifth death on Friday, an 86-year-old Singaporean woman who was a resident at Lee Ah Mooi Old Age Home at 1 Thomson Lane.

As of Thursday, Singapore has reported 1,049 infections , with new clusters emerging at Mustafa Centre, a construction site at Maxwell MRT station and Keppel Shipyard.

Singapore authorities have stressed the importance of safe distancing amid a rise in the number of locally transmitted and unlinked cases of COVID-19 .

Authorities had last week announced that gatherings outside school and work will be limited to a maximum of 10 people until Apr 30 this year. The duration of the stricter measures may be extended if the situation here does not improve.

All centre-based tuition and enrichment classes have been suspended, along with all religious services and congregations.

Owners of premises and event organisers must ensure that non-fixed seating is at least 1m away from any other seat at all times. If seats are fixed to the floor, alternate seats need to be demarcated as a seat not to be occupied.

How to digitise your most important documents and old photos

April 5, 2020 by www.channelnewsasia.com Leave a Comment

While this week’s World Backup Day is typically celebrated most by hard-drive makers and data-storage services, it’s supposed to make people remember to back up their computers. But even if you’re already backing up your digital files, do you have a backup plan for your one-of-a-kind documents and photos that you have only on paper – like birth certificates and marriage licenses?

Scanning copies of your personal papers creates a digital archive that can also be used as a backup, especially if you have the files password-protected and stored in a secure location. And even if you don’t have a document scanner, you can create your personal archive with a smartphone, a few apps and a bit of time. Here’s a guide to getting started.

STEP 1: GET ORGANISED

Gather all the documents you want to digitise. In addition to vital records, consider other papers you’ve saved over the years and might want to share, like old letters, certificates, diplomas, newspaper clippings, heirloom family photographs and other sentimental souvenirs tucked away in albums or boxes. (Keep in mind that while the electronic copies of some documents may not be suitable for official use, you can use them yourself for quick reference.)

Scanning a big pile of documents is repetitive, but it goes faster when you have the stack organised and are working in a clean, well-lit area. Spin up your favourite playlist or podcast while you scan, but avoid open beverages nearby that may spill on your papers.

STEP 2: USE A SCANNER (IF YOU HAVE ONE)

Do you have a printer that was sold as a “multi-function” device but that you’ve never used for more than printing? Dig up the manual, because your device can probably scan and photocopy as well. You may need to install utility software or find the scanning function in your computer’s system settings.

Once you have it set up, open the scanning cover on the top of the printer and place your original document or photograph face down on the glass. Close the lid and select the Scan option on the printer or computer screen to create the digital file.

STEP 3: SCAN WITH A MOBILE APP

If you don’t have a scanner, your smartphone can fill in. Just browse your app store and download a mobile scanning app. These apps use your phone’s camera to capture an image of the page. That image is saved as a PDF or JPG file to your phone or an online storage site. Be sure to read the app’s privacy policy first, so you know where your data is being stored and managed by the company.

Wirecutter, a product-review site owned by The New York Times, recommends a few scanning apps for Android and iOS devices, including Adobe Scan, which requires a free Adobe Document Cloud account. Dropbox and Evernote also offer scanning functions in their apps. For identity-related documents, an app that keeps your files on the phone (like the US$5 Piksoft TurboScan Pro for Android and iOS) can offer more peace of mind.

STEP 4: SCAN OLD PHOTOS WITH YOUR PHONE

Some document-scanner apps can also capture photographs, which is handy if you’re trying to copy old prints firmly stuck in ancient albums. Or you could just take a picture of the photo with your phone’s camera and use photo-editing tools to improve the image.

For faded old prints, an app that uses artificial intelligence to capture, clean up and correct colour might help. PhotoScan by Google Photos, free for Android and iOS, is one option. The similarly named Photo Scan by Photomyne for Android and iOS also uses algorithms to enhance photos and has a limited free version; the full version costs US$10 a month to get higher image quality and other features.

STEP 5: PROTECT AND SAFELY STORE YOUR FILES

Identity thieves are always on the hunt for personal information, so password-protecting your files adds a layer of security. Most computer operating systems include tools for locking folders, and commercial encryption programmes are another option. PDF-editing programmes like Adobe Acrobat DC also include a password feature.

If you want to keep the documents online with Dropbox or a similar service, encrypt them before uploading. You can also stash your files on an encrypted flash drive in a secure location. Wirecutter has a guide to locking down your hardware, including encrypting a computer’s hard drive.

Hopefully, you’ll never have to call up your digital archive for any serious situations. But by planning ahead when you have the luxury of time, you can make sure copies of your documents are there when you need them.
