6-year-old Ramwadi underpass cracked

February 25, 2021 by punemirror.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Citizen groups fault quality of work done on leaking amenity, call out PMC for compromising on safety in its pursuit of cheapest options during tendering

The product of an eight-year legal struggle and an investment of Rs 25 crore, the Ramwadi underpass on Pune-Ahmednagar Road linking Viman Nagar and Kalyani Nagar was slated to decongest traffic on the New Airport Road and Kalyani Nagar. But six years since its opening, it has turned into a hazardous passage for motorists, with its roof and walls leaking and concrete chipping off the ceiling’s slab.

Most users of this critical linkway are now mortally scared of it, having encountered the dripping ceiling mid-summer that has rendered the path slippery, and visible cracks looming. Despite the long lull in traffic through the lockdown, the underpass has already reported 12 accidents in the past one year.

Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC). The Association of Nagar Road Citizens Forums (ANRCF) and Viman Nagar Citizens Forum (VNCF) have sent letters to the municipal commissioner and chief engineer of PMC’s project department, accusing the civic body of compromising quality of work in their pursuit of the cheapest option during tendering. They also called out PMC for not monitoring the condition of the underpass, leaving it to citizens to draw its attention to the state of disrepair.

“The wide cracks evident on the ceiling of the underpass are a serious issue that needs to be attended to immediately, before bigger peril befall its users, such as chunks falling on the heads of motorists. If necessary, PMC should close the underpass to get the work done. This is a sampling of the kind of bad road engineering undertaken wasting taxpayers’ money. Given the abysmal condition, it is clear that bad quality of material was used to build it. Based on my earlier complaints, some walls were replastered but their condition quickly deteriorates. The place has become particularly treacherous for cycles and twowheelers and can trigger fatal accidents,” pointed out Qaneez Sukhrani , convener of ANRCF.

Likewise, Umesh Magar, member of VNCF, added, “Putrid water continues to seep through. Obviously measures taken to stop this so far have been inadequate. Instead of calling in experts to get to the bottom of the problem, PMC’s project and water supply departments and the ward office concerned are engaged in a blame game, pointing fingers at each other.”

Pramod Deokar-Patil, a resident of Ramwadi, observed, “The safety aspects on the stretch have been grossly neglected, focusing more on the decorative aspect of the work. There is also some encroachment pending to be removed so the underpass can be widened.”

Shrinivas Bonala, chief engineer (projects), who is also in charge of traffic planning department of PMC, did not respond to calls and messages. However Sandeep Patil, deputy engineer (projects), said, “We’ve visited the site and checked the status of the underpass slab. The water actually comes from the gaps created by the expansion of the bridge’s joints. We did not notice any slab or concrete disintegration, but if it’s there, we will ensure that it is repaired. We are also exploring chemical treatment to plug the leakage, but are hampered by budget constraints. Once money is allocated, work will be undertaken.”

Grief over her father’s death helped drive golfer Danielle Kang to major success

February 25, 2021 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

(CNN) Grief over the loss of a parent invariably provokes powerful and complex emotions. For golfer Danielle Kang, there was an added dynamic following the death of her father K.S. — he had been her caddy and nurtured her passion for the sport .

K.S. was there by his daughter’s side, reassuring her at the final playoff hole in the 2010 U.S Women’s Amateur tournament, saying it was just extra “TV time.” He was also there during her defense of that title, making jokes as to whether he should wear the ring handed out to the winner or give it to Kang’s mother. Kang had given her father the winner’s ring after her 2010 success.
So when K.S. died in 2013 from cancer, Kang was devastated. She’d turned professional in 2011, but in the following two years, was unable to win a pro tournament. She somehow felt she’d “failed” her Dad.

Kang was also struggling to deal with the reality of what professional sport demands.

“I felt like golf took away things that I wished I [hadn’t] missed out on,” Kang told CNN’s Living Golf Shane O’Donoghue. “I was young. I missed my friends. I missed graduation. I missed spending time with my family. I’m out on the road alone. Everything that it was that I should be in love with, I wasn’t in love with. I just played to play, and I was very angry and I wasn’t happy.

“And I told my mom that eventually. And she said to me: ‘If you’re not happy, stop playing.'”
It was only when Kang stopped playing that she discovered how much she loved competing.
Approaching golf with a new “mindset” helped Kang secure her first major — the 2017 Women’s PGA Championship — following a playoff. That PGA Championship success was her first professional win.

Sibling motivation

Sporting talent clearly runs in the Kang family. Her older brother Alex is a professional golfer and his desire to improve rubbed off on his sister.
Alex was also a talented soccer player and at the age of 12 went to Brazil to chase that dream. Two years later when he returned to the US, her brother had caught the golf “bug,” according to Danielle. When the pair visited their father in South Korea, the siblings used to spend hours together on the golf range, which is where Alex’s work ethic was born.
“I dedicate my golf game a lot to him because I wouldn’t be where I am today [without him],” says the 28-year-old Kang of her brother.
“I believe that you have to have talent, but … talent runs out at one point … hard work catches up,” she explained.
“I always say golf doesn’t owe you anything. And I think that’s the beauty of it … no matter how hard we work, sometimes it just doesn’t pay off.”

‘Regressed’

Teenager Kang’s hard work quickly paid off and at the age of 14, she qualified to play in the U.S. Women’s Open.
Before her brother signed her up for the tournament, she hadn’t been aware of the significance of her qualification at such a young age. “Everyone was so excited, and I didn’t know why. They said it was a major and my response was, ‘What’s a major?'”
Subsequently Kang missed the cut and as she dabbled with other interests — music, art and film — her performances dropped below her previous levels.
“The ambition started when I started playing bad … and that annoyed me. So I started practicing a lot because I didn’t like playing bad.”
That dedication to practice saw her graduate from Pepperdine, win back-to-back U.S Women’s Amateur titles and then become golf’s No. 1 ranked amateur.

Returning hot

Kang’s five LPGA wins have brought her career earnings of over $6 million. Two of those wins came in the space of a fortnight following the enforced break due to the coronavirus pandemic.
While she wasn’t competing last year, Kang and her coach Butch Harmon, who used to work with Tiger Woods, spent time on her mental approach to the game.
“I wanted to be ready physically; I wanted to be rested. I wanted my game to be prepared,” Kang explained.
“He [Harmon] told me my biggest enemy is going to be being too excited. He told me to calm down from a week before and every day he’d remind me: ‘Don’t get too excited.'”

Now the world No. 5, Kang credits Harmon for her rise up the rankings. His “comb through” of her game has been key, says Kang.

Later this year Kang hopes to fulfil a lifelong ambition of competing in the Olympics. As a youngster one of her dreams had been to compete in Taekwondo at an Olympics.
“I know the pandemic, everyone’s worried that it’s going to be cancelled, but it’s been my dream to compete in the Olympics since I was kid and I watched every Olympics all my life. Just to compete in it and have the opportunity to win, to set myself up for a chance is my main goal this year.”

Rush Limbaugh’s cancer death CELEBRATED online by left-wing trolls who say they’re ‘euphoric’ and hope he’s ‘in hell’

February 18, 2021 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

LEFT-wing trolls are celebrating Rush Limbaugh’s cancer death, saying they hope the outspoken talk radio host is ‘in hell’.

They’ve been gloating about their ‘euphoria’ on social media after being outraged by Limbaugh ‘s politically incorrect insults over the years.

Limbaugh, who ripped into liberals and was one of the most powerful voices in politics, influencing the rightward push of American conservatism and the rise of Donald Trump, died on Wednesday at the age of 70.

His death from lung cancer has prompted an outpouring of love from his legions of supporters on social media, including Donald Trump Jr who hailed him as a ‘legend’.

But there are also plenty of haters, slamming Limbaugh for his offensive take on life, and tweeting that he “did not make the world a better place”.

A Yale Law School professor, Scott Shapiro, tweeted: “I wouldn’t say I was happy that Rush Limbaugh died. It’s more like euphoria,” before setting his account to private following a backlash, reports Daily Wire .

Charlotte Clymer condemned him as a “coward and white supremacist”.

Rick & Morty writer, Siobhan Thompson, tweeted: “RIP Rush Limbaugh died 69 years later than he shoulda.”

Media Matters’ editor-at-large Parker Malloy added on Twitter: “My sincerest condolences go out to hell’s other residents who now have to deal with being associated with him.”

Santa Barbara and General Hospital actor Nancy Lee Grahn tweeted: “To have chosen to live your life as a hate mongering, intolerant, racist, misogynist, infamous enough for people to know you died, but repugnant enough for no one to care, except for those exactly like you. #RushLimbaugh Such a shame.”

While some fans applauded her harsh words, shrugging off his death as “no great loss”, others slated her, with one replying, “I care. You are a hater.”

Associated Press explains there have long been divided opinions over Limbaugh – who regarded his title as “most dangerous man in America” as a badge of honor.

He described himself as a ‘truth detector’, the ‘doctor of democracy’, a “lover of mankind, a harmless, lovable little fuzz ball” and an “all-around good guy.” He also claimed he had “talent on loan from God”.

Limbaugh was known for pinning insulting names on his enemies and raging against the mainstream media, accusing it of feeding the public lies.

He called Democrats and others on the left communists, wackos, feminazis, liberal extremists, faggots and radicals.

When actor Michael J. Fox, suffering from Parkinson’s disease, appeared in a Democratic campaign commercial, Limbaugh mocked his tremors.

When a Washington advocate for the homeless killed himself, he cracked jokes.

And as the AIDS epidemic raged in the 1980s, he made the dying a punchline. He called 12-year-old Chelsea Clinton a dog.

When a woman accused Duke University lacrosse players of rape, he derided her as a “ho,” and when a Georgetown University law student supported expanded contraceptive coverage, he dismissed her as a ‘slut’.

But to those who loved and admired him, Limbaugh – including the ex US president – he was a fighter, especially while battling lung cancer.

Donald Trump said that Limbaugh “has passed away to a better place, free from physical pain and hostility.

“His honor, courage, strength, and loyalty will never be replaced. Rush was a patriot, a defender of Liberty, and someone who believed in all of the greatness our Country stands for.

“Rush was a friend to myself and millions of Americans – guiding light with the ability to see the truth and paint vivid pictures over the airwaves.”

During the 2016 presidential primaries, Limbaugh said he realized early on that Trump would be the nominee, and he likened the candidate’s deep connection with his supporters to his own.

In a 2018 interview, he conceded Trump is rude but said that is because he is “fearless and willing to fight against the things that no Republican has been willing to fight against.”

Candace Owens tweeted that she was, “heartbroken about Rush Limbaugh.

“He is an American icon that can never be replaced. Let the life he led serve as a reminder to us all to fight nonstop for truth.

Gogglebox stars Dom and Steph’s posh hotel for sale for £5m after closing last year

February 24, 2021 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

Gogglebox stars Dom and Steph Parker have put their posh manor house hotel on the market for £5 million.

The couple snapped up the stunning huge Grade I-listed boutique hotel – where they filmed for the Channel 4 show – for £2.6 million in 2004.

They then spent a further £2.5 million renovating The Salutation – but are now selling the property, with Dom saying they are “too old” to run it themselves.

The Parkers last year admitted that the company running the manor house would be liquidated and guests’ deposits would be lost.

The hotel was subsequently shut – leaving 33 workers jobless in January ahead of the pandemic.

Speaking ahead of putting the house on the market, Dom last year said: “We’re looking for £5 million for the purchase price. We ideally want to sell the building.

“It has been our lives, our home, our joy – our stage for Gogglebox.”

He added: “It is a very important part of the past 14 years of our lives, and it is such a beautiful building. But we are just too old and exhausted, and don’t have the energy to run it any more.”

The Salutation, in Sandwich, Kent, was built in 1912, is spread over 3.7 acres and boasts 17 bedrooms – along with a 60-cover restaurant which has been doing fine dining.

It was designed and built by Sir Edward Lutyens in a Queen Anne style.

Its Salutation Gardens won Gold at last year’s Chelsea Flower Show, and are recognised as some of the best in the country with RHS Partner Garden status.

Dom and Steph – who featured in Channel 4’s Gogglebox from 2013 to 2016 – spent five years restoring the building and its gardens after buying it.

Dom said last year: “It is crying out for someone to get on board and love it as we have.

“We have personally invested millions into the gardens, and to achieve Gold at Chelsea last year was incredible.”

Dom admits the gardens at the house are one of the key summertime attractions and have been restored by staff.

“The staff have absolutely worked tirelessly on restoring the gardens, but it will be lost if they are neglected. It would be a crying shame to see that go to pot,” he said.

“It’s a fabulous building. All somebody needs to do is turn up and turn it on – it’s all sitting ready to go.”
