Sarah Everard: Hat found in search for missing 33-year-old as uncle says her phone is ‘not ringing’

March 8, 2021 by news.sky.com Leave a Comment

A hat similar to the one Sarah Everard was wearing when she was last seen on Wednesday evening has been found on Clapham Common.

The cream wool hat was discovered in a bush by a passer-by at about 11am, Sky News understands.

It appears to be similar to the one worn by the 33-year-old in CCTV footage released by detectives in a public appeal.

The garment was spotted close to the route Ms Everard is believed to have taken across the common, said Sky’s crime correspondent, Martin Brunt.

Specialist officers went to the scene in south London, took photographs of the hat, and made several phone calls.

About an hour after that, a police cordon was placed around the area.

Detectives later arrived, placed the hat in an evidence bag, and took it away for tests.

Earlier, Ms Everard’s uncle said her phone is not ringing and WhatsApp messages are not getting through.

Nick Everard said his brother and sister-in-law are “beside themselves with worry” and pleaded with anyone who may be holding his niece to “just be human and to let her come home”.

“Let her talk to us, give us a ring or text to let us know she is OK,” Mr Everard added.

He told The Sun it is “completely out of character” for Sarah not to be in contact with her family.

The 33-year-old marketing manager is happy, fit and healthy, he said, has a boyfriend and recently started a new job.

“These are desperate times for the family,” Mr Everard continued.

“We know the police are doing everything they can but not knowing what has happened after (several) days is agonising.”

Ms Everard’s parents and brother and sister have joined the search for her in Clapham, south London, and have been walking her last known journey, her uncle said.

He added that Sarah is a “bright young woman, very sensible” who he imagines is “very streetwise” after living in London for “a long time”.

Ms Everard vanished while walking to her home in Brixton from the nearby Clapham Junction area on Wednesday evening.

She had been at a friend’s house when she left the property in Leathwaite Road around 9pm.

A fresh CCTV image of Ms Everard – understood to have been discovered on a private doorbell-type camera – has been given to police.

It captures her walking alone along the A205 Poynders Road, from the junction at Cavendish Road, toward Tulse Hill, which lies south of Brixton.

The image appears to suggest she walked through Clapham Common and was heading towards her home, although police said it is unclear whether she made it there.

Ms Everard’s aunt Jane Everard, from Bolton, Lancashire, told The Sun: “We’re devastated. It is so out of character for her.

“She has a very big circle of friends from Durham, where she was at university and down in London. It has been a real shock. We are all so worried.”

Teams of police and volunteers have been searching Clapham Common since Friday evening.

An extensive investigation combining searches and house-to-house inquiries is ongoing to find any further sightings of Ms Everard, the Metropolitan Police said.

The investigation is being led by the Met’s Specialist Crime Command because of the “complex nature” of the case, the force added.

Detective Chief Inspector Katherine Goodwin said: “I would like to stress that there is no information at this stage to suggest anything untoward may have happened to Sarah.

“The focus remains on returning her home to her family safe and well and that is our number one priority.

“I would like to thank Sarah’s family and friends, the local community and members of the public for their help to raise awareness of this appeal and for coming forward with information.

“I would urge anybody who has information or noticed any suspicious activity in the area to contact us if you haven’t already.”

Ms Everard was last seen wearing a green rain jacket, navy blue trousers with a white diamond pattern, and turquoise and orange trainers.

She was also thought to have been wearing green earphones and a white beanie hat and is described as 5ft 4in (162cm) with a slim build and blonde hair.

Scotland Yard has issued an appeal for news of Ms Everard.

In a statement, her family said: “With every day that goes by we are getting more worried about Sarah.

“She is always in regular contact with us and with her friends and it is totally out of character for her to disappear like this. We long to see her and want nothing more than for her to be found safe and well.

“We are so grateful to the police and all our friends for all they are doing.

“We are desperate for news and if anyone knows anything about what has happened to her, we would urge you to please come forward and speak to the police. No piece of information is too insignificant.”

Anyone who has seen Sarah or who has information that may assist the investigation should call the Incident Room on 0208 785 8244

Vietnam’s oldest tree has been carefully taken care of by authorities.

Topping the list of longevity is the apitong tree, which holds the record for the oldest tree in Vietnam and is related to the sacred tale of Thien Co temple (Trung Vuong commune, Viet Tri city, Phu Tho province).

According to scientists, the tree is more than 2,100 years old. Legend has it that the temple is located on the capital land of the ancient Van Lang country. This apitong tree, over the two millennia, has been a witness to the natural and social history of the locality with invaluable cultural and spiritual values.

It was recognized as a Heritage Tree by Vietnam Association for Conservation of Nature and Environment (VACNE) on May 28, 2012.

Thien Co temple worships the wedded couple, teacher Vu The Lang and Nguyen Thi Thuc, who raised Princesses Tien Dung and Ngoc Hoa, the offspring of 18th Hung Vuong King, as noted in ancient book entitled “Ngoc Pha Hung Vuong”. The pair was buried by the locals in the village, the temple was later built, and the tree was planted alongside at from that time.

This tree was named a Vietnamese Heritage Tree on November 26, 2013.

Giua villagers (Tien Luc commune, Lang Giang district, Bac Giang province) take great pride in the 1000-year-old Camphor tree which has a diameter of 2.59 meters, and is almost 30 meters high.

Essential oils are present in all parts of the plant, making it an exceedingly rare breed. In addition, the tree roots contains safrol which is a valuable ingredient in food processing and cosmetic technology. This massive tree is recognized as one of the two largest Cinnamomum camphoras on the globe.

According to historians, the tree was considered by King Le Canh Hung as the nationwide largest camphorwood. It was named in the French Larausse encyclopedia, and ranked as a rare and precious tree in Vietnam by the French school of the Far East (now the National Museum of Vietnamese History). Photos of this tree were displayed at the fair in Marseille (France) in 1932.

Thousand-year-old Diospyros decandra tree

Situated at the shrine worshipping Duc Thanh Tan Vien, the thousand-year-old tree has been known as the guardian of the people in Di Nau commune, Tam Nong district, Phu Tho province.

The tree has a diameter of about 2.45 meters, a total height of virtually 18.45 meters. Time has left its 7.96 meter circumference stump markedly rough. It could fit in an embrace of 5 humans. On May 22, 2012, this Diospyros decandra tree was recognized as a Vietnam Heritage Tree.

Rumor has it that ‘the guardian’ was from the reign of King Dinh Bo Linh (970 – 979). When the temple was built to worship Duc Thanh Tan Vien (258 BC) and the great generals of the 18th Hung King, villagers planted the tree not only for shade, but for guarding the shrine, as a spiritual belief.

The ancient ‘Buddha’s hand’

The Streblus asper over a thousand years of age is located in Thung Nham bird garden tourist area (Hoa Lu district, Ninh Binh province). The tree shaped like “Buddha’s hand” carries has historical values associated with King Dinh Tien Hoang.

It is said that King Dinh Tien Hoang, whilst patrolling Hoa Lu capital, sent soldiers to plant this tree on a rock in Thung Nham. The tree has a quirky shape. The main trunk and three branches grow vertically alongside one another and one other branch is oblique and tilted in a different direction, quite similar to Buddhist Mudras.

Experts assess that this Streblus asper tree is 1,000 years old, yet magically remains verdant…on a rock.

The lonely tree

It looks like a forlorn figure standing in the fields of Binh Minh commune (Thanh Oai district, Hanoi). The old tree belonging to Cashew family is shady, playfully dubbed as a “lonely tree”. It is shaped like an umbrella spreading out from afar.

The tree is estimated to be over 1000 years old and is about 15 meters in diameter with a stump of about 8 meters in circumference taking a 5-7 humans to embrace.

It is also called the yin-yang by the locals since it possesses feng-shui characteristics. The lonely tree biennially fruits in December in the lunar calendar.

The year, the Eastern half of the tree sprouts beautifully young buds and verdant leaves, while the western half will in contrast produce fewer buds and thin pale-yellow leaves, and vice versa the next year.

Legend has it that the tree was planted by Ambassador Do Canh Thac, Dinh Bo Linh’s time as a landmark boundary between Binh Da village and Sinh Qua village, Binh Minh commune. Over a millennium has passed and the old tree is still as leafy and a witness to the history of the people in the village.

Fire at flats which killed five-year-old boy was started deliberately, police believe

March 8, 2021 by news.sky.com Leave a Comment

Police believe a fire at a block of flats, in which a five-year-old boy was killed and two other people were injured, was started deliberately.

Officers were called by the London Fire Brigade early on Saturday morning to reports of a blaze at a residential property in Russett Way, Greenwich, in southeast London.

Three people – a 34-year-old woman and two boys aged five and 14 – were rescued from the top floor of a block of maisonettes by firefighters.

They were taken to south London hospitals to be treated for their injuries. The younger child died a short time later.

The three are all related to each other.

Officers do not believe there were any other people inside the address and are ruling out the involvement of a third party, the Metropolitan Police said.

Scotland Yard has not confirmed the identity of the child who died.

Chonburi fisherman arrested after allegedly raping 14-year-old girl

March 6, 2021 by thepattayanews.com Leave a Comment

Chonburi –

A local fisherman has been arrested after allegedly raping a 14-year-old girl in Mueang Chonburi.

The Sanesuk Police was notified of the incident at 9:30 P.M. earlier this week, March 4th, in the Angsila sub-district.

The suspect, Mr. Kietnarong ‘Lek’ Rombhuddhasartsana, had already been caught by other residents performing a citizen’s arrest before Sanesuk police arrived.

The 14-year-old girl, whose name was withheld, told Sanesuk police that she was waiting for her boyfriend near a local beach.

The suspect reportedly put her in a headlock before successfully raping her at a small pavilion on the beach, seen in the photo above.

The girl then sped away on her motorbike before asking for help from local residents.

The local residents went to the scene and discovered the suspect was still in the vicinity. The suspect was reportedly beaten by the locals while trying to escape.

The suspect claimed to Sanesuk police that the girl consented to sex and that he did not rape her.

Sanesuk Police have yet to identify what charges will be pressed against the suspect, although the suspect was detained and remains in a local jail. Law Enforcement continues to investigate the alleged act.
