After the bombing, the central part of the building collapsed and debris blocked the entrance to the bomb shelter, potentially trapping hundreds of people inside. Officials said it is impossible to know how many people were killed and injured in the attack because constant Russian shelling means that rescuers cannot reach those in the rubble. In a statement, the city council said: “It’s impossible to estimate the scale of this horrific and inhumane act as the residential areas are still under shelling. “It appears that the main part of the Drama Theatre has been destroyed and that the debris has blocked the entrance to the bomb shelter underneath.”

Chilling reason Putin has not assassinated Ukrainian president Zelensky

Vladimir Putin’s suspected intentions of assassinating Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky have not yet materialised because the defiant leader has become “such an enormous figure”, experts say.

Speaking on “ Pod Save the World ”, Tommy Vietor and Ben Rhodes suggest Mr Zelensky’s assassination will backfire on the Russian president.

In a podcast entitled The Rising Cost of Putin’s War , the pair question the Russian risk assessment on the “ghoulish” subject of hitting Mr Zelensky.

They say: “They may actually calculate Zelensky has become such an enormous figure they would trigger some reaction they might not want to trigger.

“So Zelensky may have calculated he’s become such a large figure, the cost of Russia harming him is going to be really high.”

‘Wear a suit!’ Zelensky astonishingly attacked for ‘disrespecting’ US Congress in t-shirt

The Ukrainian President has been astonishingly attacked for “disrespecting” the US by wearing a t-shirt during his address to Congress.

Peter Schiff, American stock broker and Chief Economist at Euro Pacific Capital, accused Ukraine’s leader of “disrespecting” the US by not donning a suit during his address to policymakers.

He wrote in a post on Twitter to his 670,000 followers: “I understand times are hard, but doesn’t the President of the Ukraine own a suit?

“I don’t have much respect for current members of the US Congress either, but I still wouldn’t address them wearing a t-shirt.”

Russia’s desperate bid to replace McDonald’s exposed – new chain ‘suspiciously familiar’

Russia has revealed a new logo for the franchise it hopes will replace its McDonald’s stores, after the restaurant chain shut down operations in the country in the wake of its invasion of Ukraine.

Viewers of the new logo were quick to point out its striking resemblance to McDonald’s logo, with Twitter users saying it looked “suspiciously familiar”.

The Uncle Vanya logo purports to show a cyrillic “B”, which refers to the “V” in Vanya.

The producers of the logo opted for a yellow logo on a bright red background, with the restaurant’s name in white.

Eagle-eyed observers may notice that the iconic golden arches had even been stitched hastily to a yellow bar, which does not perfectly line up at the bottom.

Putin’s new low – hundreds feared dead after theatre full of children bombed

Putin’s forces bombed a theatre in Mariupol where hundreds of Ukrainians, including children, were sheltering on Wednesday, in what has been condemned by Ukraine as a war crime.

Archbishop of Canterbury tells head of Russian Orthodox Church of grave concern over Ukraine

The Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken to the leader of the Russian Orthodox Chruch to express his “grave concern” regarding the conflict in Ukraine, Lambeth Palace has said.

The pair spoke via video call on Wednesday and The Most Rev Justin Welby urged Patriarch Kirill of Moscow to publicly call for peace.

Patriarch Kirill has long had friendly ties with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

In a statement, Lambeth Palace said: “Archbishop Justin Welby expressed his grave concern about the war in Ukraine which he said is a great tragedy. He stressed the need for an end to the violence in Ukraine and said that war and violence is never an answer.

“The archbishop said we need to find ways to live as neighbours in Europe without the aggression and human suffering which have been too much part of our life and history.

“The archbishop said that as churches we must be united in following the great call of Jesus Christ on his disciples to be peacemakers, to do what we can to enable politicians to do their work of establishing the freedom and rights of all people in Ukraine.

“He appealed to His Holiness to join him in speaking for peace in public, and spoke of the need for a ceasefire.

“The archbishop said that he and the Church of England would do whatever it could to support refugees.

“Both leaders emphasised the need to achieve a lasting peace based on justice as soon as possible and agreed to continued communication.”

David Cameron says more could be done to support Ukraine

Former Prime Minister David Cameron has called for a dedicated aid minister and said that more can be done to support Ukraine.

Asked on Channel 4 News whether he would rule out putting a no-fly zone in place over Ukraine if he was in power, he said: “I’m afraid I would, you know, in our hearts, every shred of our being wants to do everything we can to help the Ukrainians in the struggle.

“And we are helping, we’re helping with weapons, we’re helping with training, we’re helping with refugees. There’s more we can do on humanitarian aid, but I think we have to be very clear with our friends and allies and people we care deeply about, we must be clear about what we can do. But I’m afraid we also have to be clear about what we can’t do.

“That said, there are more things that we can do. Well, I think the process started under my premiership of sending more troops to frontline states in Nato, to Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania. Let’s turn some of those into permanent bases.

“Let’s do more on humanitarian aid. We achieved 0.7% of GDP in our aid payments. I’m sad we’ve got away from that. I hope we can get back there.

“Let’s with the EU lead the donor conference, lead the aid effort. Let’s have a dedicated aid minister in the Cabinet doing development. The Foreign Office ministers do a great job, but it’d be good to have someone who’s 100% dedicated to humanitarian aid and development.”

Biden to unleash £600M war chest and game-changing 115mph ‘killer drones’

President Joe Biden is weighing up supplying Ukraine with killer drones and over £612million worth of additional security assistance.

The cutting-edge “Switchblade” missiles could accurately target Russian tanks and artillery positions from as far as two miles away, according to NBC news. There are two variants of the weapon, one which can pinpoint strikes on personnel, and another for destroying tanks and other armoured vehicles.

These perilous weapons are reportedly the same missiles that killed Iranian military commander Qasem Soleimani under Donald Trump in 2020.

Mr Biden is set to lay out a new package of additional security assistance to Ukraine of £612million and confirm the use of the drones later today. The drone comes in two variations.

The first and most powerful one can dart at 115mph, piercing armour and destroying tanks. The second can kill people in the open as well as passengers in vehicles. Both Switchblades are small enough to fit into a rucksack and fired from a tube set up in 10 minutes.

The Biden administration has already agreed to allocate over $1billion (£766million) to Ukraine in the past week.

Putin hints at imminent climbdown as Russia sets out key demand for END of Ukraine war

Russia may be willing to accept that Ukraine adopts an Austrian-Swedish-like military status, in a move that could prove to be a breakthrough in the deadly conflict.

According to the latest press briefing by the Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, Russia could be ready to accept that Ukraine adopts a “neutral” non-aligned military status that would enable Kyiv to keep its army.

Translating Mr Peskov’s note, journalist Kevin Rothrock tweeted: “Seemingly very good news: Moscow signals that it might accept Austrian/Swedish-style neutrality in Ukraine . ie Kyiv would pledge to be nonaligned (no foreign military bases) but retain its own military. Russia might accept this as ‘de-militarization’.

“Dropping sanctions will be key.”

“This is a variant that is currently being discussed and which could really be seen a compromise,” Mr Peskov was quoted as saying by RIA news agency.

The reference to demilitarisation appeared to relate to the idea of neutral status for Ukraine.

Putin in real trouble’ with Russia ‘struggling’ – new MoD update

Putin’s army has had more deaths than expected and is “in real trouble” of losing the war against Ukraine.

In its daily defence intelligence update, the UK’s Ministry of Defence (MoD) has said Russia is increasingly seeking to generate additional troops to bolster its personnel losses.

To which political journalist Andrew Neil replied: “Very important update. The Russian offensive is in real trouble.”

The MoD has been issuing daily intelligence briefings to the public to counter Russian disinformation surrounding the war in Ukraine.

The update continued: “As a result of these losses it is likely Russia is struggling to conduct offensive operations in the face of sustained Ukrainian resistance. Continued personnel losses will also make it difficult for Russia to secure occupied territory.”

Putin’s soldiers have faced unrelenting opposition from the Ukrainian armed forces — who claimed to have killed over 12,000 troops.

‘China will never attack Ukraine’

Chinese Ambassador Fan Xiangrong met with the head of the Lvyv military administration, Maksym Kozytskyi and claimed that China will never attack Ukraine.

This was the first protocol meeting since the Embassy moved from Kyiv to Lvyv.
Mr Xiangrong said: “China is a friendly state for the Ukrainian people. As an ambassador, I can say with responsibility that China will always be a good force for Ukraine, both economically and politically.

“We will always respect your state and develop relations based on equality and mutual benefit. We will respect the path that Ukrainians choose, because this is the sovereign right of every nation.
“China will never attack Ukraine, we will help, in particular in the economic direction. In this situation that you currently experience, we will act responsibly. We have seen how great the unity of the Ukrainian people is, and this means its strength.”
This comes after reports that Moscow has requested military assistance from Beijing and the United States discouraged China in backing Russia in its war in Ukraine.

Putin recruits 40,000 ‘ISIS’ fighters as he prepares another brutal attack

Putin officially declared war criminal by unanimous vote over barbaric Ukraine invasion

The US Senate has voted unanimously to condemn Vladimir Putin as a war criminal over the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

The resolution was introduced by Republican Senator Lindsey Graham and was backed by both main political parties in the Senate. It was backed by the International Criminal Court (ICC), based in The Hague.

Chuck Schumer, Democratic Senate Majority Leader, expressed a show of solidarity from the typically divided chamber.

He told senators just prior to the vote that Vladimir Putin “cannot escape accountability” for the actions perpetrated against the Ukrainian people.

He said: “All of us in this chamber joined together, with Democrats and Republicans, to say that Vladimir Putin cannot escape accountability for the atrocities committed against the Ukrainian people.”

20,000 civilians escape besieged Mariupol

Around 20,000 civilians have managed to escape the besieged port of Mariupol in private cars, the Ukrainian interior ministry said on Wednesday.

But there are still hundreds of thousands of residents trapped by Russian shelling, many without heating, power, food or running water.

Around 4,000 cars left the seaport via a designated route in a humanitarian corridoor, which runs west for more than 160 miles to the Ukraine-held city of Zaporizhzhia.

However there are now concerns in Zaporizhzhia, as Russian troops blew up explosives at the nuclear plant there.

Ukraine’s state-run nuclear energy company believe that further explosions are planned too.

Russia targets civilian areas in Zaporizhia

For the first time since the war began, Russian forces have targeted the south-eastern city of Zaporizhia and hit civilian infrastructure.

In a message on Telegram, Oleksandr Starukh, the head of the Ukrainian regional military administration, said: “The morning was not good… The rockets landed in the area of the Zaporozhye-2 railway station. According to preliminary data, no one was killed. The second rocket landed in the area of the botanical garden”.

Opinion: American leadership is thriving abroad. It’s a disturbingly different story at home

(CNN) The United States has performed impressively in its efforts to counter Russia’s brutal aggression against Ukraine. The combination of Russian leader Vladimir Putin’s miscalculation, Ukraine’s bravery and Washington’s effective global leadership is reshaping the geopolitical landscape in a way that favors democracy, strengthens a NATO alliance that is now attracting new members and restores America’s place as the leader of the world’s democracies.

Unless, that is, you look at what is happening within the United States.
A White man allegedly drove more than 200 miles to a grocery store in Buffalo, New York, last week, looking to kill Black Americans, according to social media posts the suspect is believed to have made in the months leading up to the attack. He shot 13 people, killing 10. He was allegedly fueled by the racist and anti-Semitic “replacement theory,” which weaponizes a normal, centuries-old pattern of migration and ethnic diversity to perpetuate the idea that White people are slowly and intentionally being replaced by minorities.

Racism, anti-Semitism and a resentment of immigrants are nothing new. What is new is that in America, a land of diversity and immigrants, what used to be a fringe theory has found sympathetic voices in one of the two main political parties.

As if to confirm the dangerous trajectory of the Republican Party, which is steadily moving away from its more reasonable ideas and leaders and embracing extremism, primary elections in several states this week showed a clear pattern. Republican voters overwhelmingly supported fierce proponents of the “Big Lie” who rejected the legitimate results of the 2020 election.

In Pennsylvania, for example, voters backed Doug Mastriano , a far-right election denier who is now the Republican nominee for governor. In North Carolina, Rep. Ted Budd, who won the GOP Senate primary, shared a baseless claim about Dominion Voting Systems in a text to White House chief of staff Mark Meadows in the days after the 2020 election.
The country is deeply polarized. But it’s not just a matter of diverging views about policy. Something else, something much more dangerous is happening.

Opinion: Buffalo is part of an unfolding American tragedy

Opinion: Buffalo is part of an unfolding American tragedy

Sure, there are people in the Democratic Party who espouse views that many view as radical. And there are Republicans who are reality-based conservatives. But looking at the GOP as a whole, the fringe has become more and more the mainstream.
Voters are falling in line behind people like House Republican conference chair Elise Stefanik , who has promoted the replacement theory, and far-right Fox News personality Tucker Carlson, who has referenced and drawn from the replacement conspiracy on numerous occasions as part of his apparent efforts to stoke White fear. (A day after the Buffalo shooting, Stefanik’s senior adviser denied that the congresswoman “advocated for any racist position” and told the Washington Post, “Any implication or attempt to blame the heinous shooting in Buffalo on the Congresswoman is a disgusting low for the Left, their Never Trump allies and the sycophant stenographers in the media.” Carlson, on the other hand, tried to distance himself from the document allegedly written by the Buffalo shooting suspect.)
And Republicans are increasingly embracing the anti-democratic falsehood that the 2020 election was rigged — a lie pushed by the party’s most influential figure, former President Donald Trump. And all of this is happening while the country is awash with weapons .
It’s a dangerous cocktail of cultish authoritarianism, extremist ideology, readily accessible firearms and a willingness to deny inconvenient truths.

Opinion: It won’t be long before extremists in the GOP make Trump look tame

Ironically, the growing threat to democracy in the United States is occurring at a moment when US foreign policy has accomplished an extraordinary, historic feat; one that among other things serves to fortify democracy around the world.
This week, Finland and Sweden , two countries that had for decades sought to remain neutral on great power clashes, submitted their applications to join NATO.
It’s difficult to fathom just how dramatic a shift this is. It was only recently that the very survival of NATO seemed in doubt. French President Emmanuel Macron had warned about the “brain death of NATO” in 2019. Trump had disparaged the alliance as irrelevant and cast doubt on the US’s commitment to mutual defense .
And, according to former national security adviser John Bolton, Trump might have pulled the US out of NATO if he had won a second term. (Taylor Budowich, a spokesman for Trump, dismissed Bolton’s criticism, saying the former adviser “is only happy when America is at war.”)
But Finland and Sweden saw what everyone else did after Putin ordered the invasion of Ukraine, prompting the US to respond by warning Russia that it would face “the full force of American power” if it moved into NATO territory. It became apparent that belonging to NATO, an alliance of democracies, protects against aggressive countries with imperial designs.
Opinion: My country shares an 800-mile border with Russia. The Ukraine invasion has utterly changed how I view NATO

Opinion: My country shares an 800-mile border with Russia. The Ukraine invasion has utterly changed how I view NATO

Despite some internal disagreements, NATO now looks stronger, more united and more necessary than it has in decades.
It’s easy to see how this could have gone a different way. Another president — the previous one — might have sat this out and rendered NATO powerless.
Without Washington’s diplomatic, political, financial and military support, Ukraine could now be in a much worse position; Putin could be stronger than ever, with his eye on Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania , and who knows where else . China could be rejoicing in its links with Moscow, revving up for an assault on Taiwan . Other world leaders, seeking to boost their standing at home, might be looking to history to reclaim lost territories .
But the US led its allies in taking a stand even before Putin attacked, affirming the sovereignty of Ukraine and its territorial integrity .
Even before the first Russian tank crossed into Ukraine, President Joe Biden sought to pursue an extraordinarily difficult path. His goals were to prevent Putin from conquering Ukraine; to do it without triggering a direct clash between Russia and the United States, two nuclear-armed powers; and to deny Russia a geopolitical victory. It was a needle-threading challenge of the highest order. So far, it looks like he has succeeded.
Opinion: Why Putin puts his neighbor Georgia on edge

Opinion: Why Putin puts his neighbor Georgia on edge

Biden and his team rallied the world to Ukraine’s side . They made sure NATO was united in its support of Kyiv, and they provided a massive supply of armaments that helped Ukrainian defenders push the Russians back. Three men — Putin, Biden and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky — are most responsible for this turn of events.
Today, Russia looks like a paper tiger, albeit a brutally destructive one. China is surely less enthusiastic about its “no limits” friendship with Russia.
And the United States has regained its undisputed place as the leader of a mighty alliance of democracies.
And yet, when the world looks at what is happening in the US, it sees a struggling democracy ridden with violence, hate and division.
This is a high point in America’s global leadership, but only if you look at it with one eye closed.

Mike Esper, who served as one of Trump’s defense secretaries, recently noted that the greatest threat to America is not China, but the extreme partisan dysfunction in Washington. He’s now calling on the GOP to divorce Trump . But Trumpism has already conquered much of the GOP.
It’s not just the House, the Senate and the White House that are in play in the upcoming midterm elections. It’s democracy itself. If the candidates who reject election results, demonize minorities and fuel internal divisions continue to gain power in 2022 and 2024, it’s very possible American democracy will not survive. And, of course, the US’s position as a global beacon of freedom and a leader of the world’s democracies will perish along with it.

987 Children Born in Kyiv Since Invasion Started

A glimmer of hope in Kyiv as the city shares celebratory news amid the devastation of the past few weeks.

Kyiv government officials report 987 children were born in city over the first 35 days of the invasion. Parents welcomed a total of 534 boys, 453 girls and 25 twins.

What is life like right now in Kyiv?

Kyiv remains under martial law, but the city reports that citizens “are returning to the capital, life goes on.” A curfew, shortened by two hours earlier this week, remains in place daily from 9 p.m. to 6 a.m. The city announced it will lift a ban on alcohol beginning Friday, allowing sales between designated hours.

The Kyiv Humanitarian Headquarters continues to provide food, medicine and essentials to those most in need. The city reports that all utilities are being provided. Cancer patients are also able to be cared for at the Kyiv City Oncology Center.

“Physicians continue to work in an intensive mode,” a City of Kyiv statement reads.

Psychologists have been providing care to women and youth who have taken shelter at metro stations across the city. Sessions are being conducted in group and individual sessions.

“The main task is to help cope with the emotional consequences of the crisis, to regain the ability to manage their lives,” the City of Kyiv said.

Attacks continue against Kyiv, as the Pentagon said a “small number” of Russian troops have re-positioned away from the capital and towards Belarus.

Cell Phone Blares Siren as Ukraine, U.S. Lawmakers Meet

As a group of Ukraine’s Parliament members met with U.S. Senators in Washington D.C. Wednesday to call for more aid, an air raid siren rang out from one of their cell phones.

Ukrainian Parliament member Anastasia Radina pulled out her phone as the siren blared, the Associated Press reports.

“Right now, you hear the sound?” Radina said, according to AP . “This is the air raid alarm in the community where my son is staying right now. I need you all to hear that.”

Bipartisan members of the Senate Ukraine Caucus met with six Ukrainian Parliament members at the U.S. Capitol. The Ukrainian representatives urged the U.S. and its allies for additional military aid and additional economic sanctions on Russia, AP adds.

“The barbaric actions of Vladimir Putin have forced nearly four million Ukrainians to flee their country,” Senate Ukraine Caucus Co-Chair Dick Durbin said.

“The resilience of the Ukrainian people is unparalleled and deserves sustained American support. Today’s meeting reinforced our strong relations and we will continue to work with our European allies to further tighten the economic pressure on Putin, welcome Ukrainian refugees, and much more.”

Zelensky Says ‘Thousands’ Are Buried in Ruins of Mariupol

In an address the Belgian Parliament, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky provided a grave update on the status of Mariupol.

He said before the war, it was one of the most promising and economically powerful cities in Ukraine. Now, more than 90 percent of all building in the city are completely destroyed by Russian strikes, he said.

Zelensky said thousands of people have died and are buried in the courtyards of high-rise building, “or rather, what is left of the high-rise buildings.”

“Today it is the most horrific place in Europe,” he said. “It is hell. It is a catastrophe that everyone knows about, the whole world.”

Zelensky said Russian forces have closed all entrances to the city by land and sea, blocking humanitarian aid.

“There is nothing in the city: no water, no food, no medicine, no life,” he said. “There is nothing you need to sustain any life.”

Still, Ukraine continues to “make humanitarian corridors from Mariupol work” to save civilians remaining in the city.

“Mariupol does not give up,” Zelensky added. “Mariupol continues to fight the occupiers.”

U.S. Troops Are Not Training with Ukrainians, Pentagon Says

The Pentagon denied reports that U.S. troops are training with Ukrainian forces in Poland.

“We are not in a training environment in Poland with Ukrainians [armed forces],” Press Secretary John Kirby said during a press briefing Thursday.

There is “some liaison going on,” he added, “but we wouldn’t call it classic training.”

Kirby also said Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin wants to “keep his options open” regarding the rotating U.S. troops in Europe.

He said the additional deployments in Europe, just under 20,000 troops, are there on temporary orders.

“We’ll take each one as it comes,” he said, deciding whether each capability needs to stay and, if so, if that units needs to be rotated. So far, none of the units have been rotated out, Kirby said.

Secretary Austin has approved the extension of the aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman’s deployment in the Mediterranean Sea. He will also keep troops with the 82nd Airborne Divisions in Poland for “awhile longer,” Kirby said

Kirby said the Defense Department will be “flexible” with the U.S. capabilities in Europe because “we don’t know how long this war in Ukraine is going to last.”

He said it is “hard to say” when the conflict in Ukraine will end, crediting Ukraine for Russia’s strategic failures.

“The Ukrainians are fighting very, very well and the Russians are not,” he said. “It would be foolish to predict exactly how long this will go.”

Kirby added that Russia’s shift in military focus to Donbass could drag out the conflict in Ukraine even longer.

Russia ‘Transfers’ Control of Chernobyl Back to Ukraine

Russian forces have reportedly returned control of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant to Ukraine, Ukrainian authorities told the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Thursday.

Ukraine said Russian forces “transferred” control of the site to Ukrainian personnel in writing and have moved two convoys of troops off of the site and toward Belarus, IAEA said.

It also reports a third convoy has left Slavutych, where many Chernobyl staff live, also headed toward Belarus. Ukrainian authorities “presume” the remaining Russian forces on site are preparing to leave.

Ukrainian staff working on site since March 20 have still not been able to rotate, the U.N. nuclear watchdog said. The agency is working to send assistance and support to Chernobyl in the coming days. Ukraine’s Parliament has warned of radiation risks amid ongoing power outages at the site, the IAEA is investigating reports of possible exposure.

“The IAEA has not been able to confirm reports of Russian forces receiving high doses of radiation while being in the Chornobyl Exclusion Zone,” the agency said. “The IAEA is seeking further information in order to provide an independent assessment of the situation.”

IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi landed in Kaliningrad Thursday, where he will speak with Russian officials Friday morning. Grossi met with senior Ukrainian government officials Wednesday to discuss technical assistance needed to ensure nuclear safety.

“IAEA expert teams and additional safety equipment will arrive very soon to Ukraine’s nuclear facilities,” Grossi said Wednesday.

Russian forces seized control of the Chernobyl Nuclear Power Plant on the first day of the invasion, February 24.

Pentagon Says Russian Forces Likely to Resupply in Belarus

The Pentagon said Russian troops that were stationed around Kyiv and Chernobyl are repositioning.

Press Secretary John Kirby said it is unclear “where they are going, for how long or for what purpose,” but said they are likely heading to Belarus to resupply and refit before being deployed elsewhere in Ukraine.

“What they call de-escalation, I call repositioning,” he said, adding that Kyiv is still a central focus of Russian airstrikes.

Kirby said the U.S. is unsure if the 40-mile convoy that was stalled outside Kyiv “even exists anymore” after “failing to accomplish their mission.”

“Obviously they didn’t get there” he said, crediting the “dexterity” of Ukraine’s resistance.

“The Ukrainians put a stop to that convoy pretty quickly by being very nimble,” he added.

He added that there is no indication forces leaving Chernobyl are doing so because of and hazard or nuclear emergency.

Kirby said supply shipments to Ukraine are arriving swiftly, contrary to reports of slow progress.

“I’ve never seen the Department of Defense be able to move with this alacrity or speed as I have these past few weeks,” he said.

These packages include a mixture of weapons systems, including javelins and stingers, as well as body armor, helmets and medical supplies.

Half a dozen shipments from the $800 million package have been delivered, Kirby said, with the rest expected to be delivered “in a couple of weeks.”

Zelensky Asks Belgium for Help with EU Membership

Zelensky asked Belgian lawmakers for their help with weapons, sanctions and European Union membership.

He said Ukrainians are fighting for the principles of freedom against Russian tyranny “unites the world” during an address to Belgian lawmakers.

“The world of those who really fight for freedom – here and now – against tyranny,” he said. “Against a tyranny that wants to split Europe and destroy everything that unites us. Everything that unites you and the world of those who are so used to freedom that they don’t even want to notice what the struggle for it is worth.”

Zelensky said Ukraine looks forward to being a member of the European Union.

“We need to know that Ukraine will be in the European Union because if we are they will lose,” he said. “But if we lose, if we lose Mariupol and other Ukrainian cities there will no longer be a strong European Union because tyranny will come and take away from you that which you have and you are proud of.

He added “that this is not a threat, this is reality.”

Belgian Prime Minister Alexander De Croo thanked Zelensky for Ukraine continued fight.

“It is hard to find the right words given the dramatic circumstances,” he said. “But do know, all Belgians admire your courage and cool-headedness. We admire the bravery of the Ukrainian people. And above all, we admire your dignity in the face of so much inhumanity.”

De Croo also condemned Russia and President Vladimir Putin.

“Europe will be at the forefront of Ukraine’s reconstruction with a European Marshall plan for Ukraine,” he said. “But for that to happen, this barbarism needs to stop as soon as possible, and it is possible.”

“Whatever Putin’s plans, he will never own Ukraine,” he added

He acknowledged Ukraine’s plea for a no-fly zone, but reiterated that NATO involvement would lead to “escalation that might engulf the whole of Europe.”

“NATO is not a party to this conflict. And it should not become one,” he said.

However, De Croo reassured Zelensky Belgium is on Ukraine’s side and will continue to send its support.

“Politically, by imposing high economic costs on Russia. Diplomatically, by isolating Russia. By providing humanitarian and military aid and by sheltering those who are fleeing Russian missiles and bombs,” he said. “We stand by your side, and we will remain by your side.”

De Croo said Ukraine is part of the European people because they share values of “freedom and democracy, of an open society and human progress,” and ensured Zelensky of Ukrainian EU membership.

“It would be a fundamental failure of Europe to keep Ukraine waiting for the formal process of accession to the European Union,” he said, adding that EU membership is a long and demanding process.

He said Belgium and Ukraine should work towards a “swifter and more direct solution” to integrate the Ukrainian and European economies “to trade with each other, invest, to grow towards each other” and allow Ukraine to become truly European and to participate in programs.”

Biden Blames Putin for Rising Oil Prices

President Biden just announced his two-part plan to ease American’s pain at the gas pump amid a major price hike.

Biden blames the COVID-19 pandemic and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s war in Ukraine for the increase in gas prices.

“Our prices are rising because of Putin’s action,” he said. “There isn’t enough supply. And the bottom line is if we want lower gas prices, we need to have more oil supply right now.”

He condemned oil companies who are taking exploiting of the current situation to take advantage of the American people and called on them to increase their supply.

“I say enough. Enough of lavishing excessive profits on investors and payouts and buybacks when the American people are watching,” Biden said.

Biden said oil companies need to “step up” to provide relief for customers, not just to executives and shareholders.

He added that some companies are riding high prices after making $80 billion in profits last year.

“This is not the time to sit on record profits,” he said. “This is the time to step up for the good of your country.”

It is time now, he said, to invest in the immediate production needed to “respond to Vladimir Putin.”

He also called on Congress to pass “use it or lose it” laws to penalize oil companies for sitting on unused leases or idle wells.

“They will either have to start producing or pay the price for their inaction,” Biden said.

Putin’s Advisors May Be on House Arrest, Biden Says

President Joe Biden said Russian President Vladimir Putin may have put some of his advisors on house arrest, as the Pentagon believes that Putin has been “misled” or not fully informed of the situation in Ukraine by his Ministry of Defense.

“He [Putin] seems to be self isolating and there’s some indication that he has fired or put under house arrest some of his advisors,” Biden said Thursday.

Biden cautioned that he didn’t want to put “too much stock” in that claim; however, citing a substantial lack of hard evidence.

The degree to which Putin may be misinformed about the entirety of the situation in Ukraine remains an “open question” Biden said, adding “there’s a lot of speculation.”

Russian Forces Kidnap 12-Year-Old Girl From Mariupol

A 12-year-old Ukrainian girl has been kidnapped from Mariupol by Russian forces, the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said Thursday.

The girl had been in Mariupol with her father since the beginning of the invasion, according to investigators. A strike on their home killed a man on March 17, the report does not specify if that was her father. The girl then joined locals to evacuate the city, but was injured in a mine explosion. Investigators believe she was then kidnapped by Russian forces.

“The child was abducted by representatives of the Russian armed forces and taken to the territory of the occupied Donbass under their control,” the Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office said.

The young girl’s grandfather reported her disappearance, according to the report, saying he’s currently “forced to live in Chernivtsi.”

Zelensky Asks Australia for More Weapons

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for more sanctions against Russia during a video address to the Australian parliament Thursday.

“The distance between our states is thousands of kilometers,” Zelensky said. “But the distance simply does not exist for the cruelty and chaos that Russia has brought to … our Ukrainian land.”

He added that “geography means nothing, only humanity matters.”

Zelensky outlined the destruction Ukraine has faced over the last month and asked the lawmakers for more sanctions and armed personnel vehicles, including the Australian-manufactured Bushmaster.

“We need more sanctions against Russia, powerful sanctions until they stop blackmailing other countries with their nuclear missiles,” he said, adding a call to stop all trade with Russia.

Zelensky also warned that the threats Ukraine is facing from Russia may inspire other adversarial countries to initiate attack elsewhere around the world.

“The most terrible thing is that if we don’t stop Russia now, if we don’t hold Russia accountable, then some other countries of the world who are looking forward to similar wars against their neighbors will decide that such things are possible for them as well,” Zelenskyy said.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison pledged to provide an additional $25 million of defensive military assistance for the Ukrainian Armed Forces. This comes after Australia has already promised $91 million AUD in military assistance, $65 million in humanitarian aid and 70,000 metric tons of coal to Ukraine.

“You have our prayers, but you also have our weapons, our humanitarian aid, our sanctions against those who seek to deny your freedom and you even have our coal,” Morrison said, adding that Zelensky is a “lion for democracy.”

“The people of Australia stand with Ukraine in your fight for survival,” Morrison said. “We welcome you Mr. President as a lion of democracy we do not stand with the war criminal of Moscow.”

Biden to Lay Out Two Plans to Lower U.S. Gas Prices

President Joe Biden will announce plans to lower U.S. gas prices Thursday, as prices have skyrocketed amid Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

AAA recorded the highest ever average U.S. gas price on March 11, 2022, hitting $4.33. Today’s average price for a gallon of gas in the U.S. is $4.23. Prices remain exceptionally high in California, where today’s average price is $5.90 and Nevada, $5.24.

“Since Putin accelerated his military build-up around Ukraine, gas prices have increased by nearly a dollar per gallon,” the White House said in a statement. “Because of Putin’s war of choice, less oil is getting to market, and the reduction in supply is raising prices at the pump for Americans.”

Biden will announce a two-part plan Thursday afternoon to expand oil supply by increasing domestic production and reducing American dependence on oil by bolstering the clean energy economy.

“Right now, the oil and gas industry is sitting on more than 12 million acres of non-producing Federal land with 9,000 unused but already-approved permits for production,” the White House said.

“Today, President Biden is calling on Congress to make companies pay fees on wells from their leases that they haven’t used in years and on acres of public lands that they are hoarding without producing.”

Biden will also announce an unprecedented release of oil reserves that will put an average of one million additional barrels on the market daily for the next six months. The White House said the release will serve as “bridge” until domestic production ramps up.

The second part of Biden’s announcement will focus on achieving energy independence.

“The President will call on Congress to pass his plan to speed the transition to clean energy that is made in America,” the White House said, saying the plan would save families nearly $1,000 a year in gas by using electric vehicles.

“And, the President will issue a directive, authorizing the use of the Defense Production Act to secure American production of critical materials to bolster our clean energy economy,” the White House added.

The U.S. banned the import of Russian oil amid the ongoing invasion.

U.K. Sanctions Russian Media, ‘Butcher of Mariupol’

The United Kingdom slapped sanctions on Russian propagandists, Kremlin-funded media and the Russian general dubbed the “the butcher of Mariupol” Thursday.

U.K. Foreign Secretary Liz Truss announced 14 new sanctions on Russian propagandists and state media “who spread lies and deceit about Putin’s illegal invasion of Ukraine.” Sergey Brilev, TV anchor on Russia state-owned media Rossiya, is among those sanctioned.

“Having previously lived in the U.K., Brilev will no longer be able to access any of his U.K. assets or continue business dealings,” the U.K. government said in a statement.

Sanctions include RT, Sputnik along with top members of both news organizations. Thursday’s action is the latest effort by the U.K. to continue targeting misinformation.

“These sanctions will ensure RT will not be able to find its way back on U.K. televisions, and will prevent companies and individuals operating in the U.K. from doing business with Russian state propaganda vehicles RT and Sputnik, and key figures in those organizations,” the U.K. government said.

The list includes, but is not limited to, the following:

  • TV-Novosti: Kremlin-funded organization and owners of RT
  • Rossiya Segodnya: Media group that owns Sputnik, owned and operated by the Russian government
  • Aleksandr Zharov: Chief Executive Officer of Gazprom-Media
  • Alexey Nikolov: Managing Director of RT
  • Anton Anisimov: Head of Sputnik International Broadcasting

“Putin’s war on Ukraine is based on a torrent of lies,” Truss said. “Britain has helped lead the world in exposing Kremlin disinformation and this latest batch of sanctions hits the shameless propagandists who push out Putin’s fake news and narratives.”

Sanctions were also announced against Russian Colonel-General Mikhail Mizintsev, dubbed the “the butcher of Mariupol.” Truss said he is behind responsible the “appalling shelling” of the besieged city.

“Mizintsev is the Chief of the National Defense Command and Control Centre, where all Russian military operations are planned and controlled worldwide,” the U.K. government said. “Mizintsev is known for using reprehensible tactics, including shelling civilian centers in both Aleppo in 2015-16 and now in Mariupol where atrocities are being perpetuated against Ukrainian people.”

Truss warned of further sanctions, saying “nothing and no one is off the table.”

Red Cross Joins Convoy to Provide Aid in Mariupol

A convoy of buses is making its way to Mariupol to evacuate residents and bring humanitarian support.

The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) is participating in these humanitarian efforts, saying it will “facilitate safe passage” of civilians out of Mariupol tomorrow and bring supplies and aid.

“All parties must agree to the exact terms, the Red Cross said in a tweet. “This operation is critical. Tens of thousands of lives depend on it.”

The Red Cross noted that it will “never support any evacuation to anywhere that is against what people want.”

Some families have already been evacuated from heavily-shelled Mariupol and arrived at the registration center in Zaporizhzhia.

Over 1,200 Civilians Killed, Including 112 Children

Civilian casualties continue increasing in Ukraine as Russia’s invasion enters a 36th day. The United Nations has recorded more than 3,160 casualties, warning the actual figures are considerably higher.

The Office of the U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) has recorded 1,232 civilian deaths, including 112 children, between February 24 and March 30.

OHCHR reports another 1,935 civilians have been injured, including 149 children.

“Most of the civilian casualties recorded were caused by the use of explosive weapons with a wide impact area, including shelling from heavy artillery and multiple launch rocket systems, and missile and air strikes,” OHCHR said.

The OHCHR reiterates that reports are pending from areas of “intense hostilities,” including Mariupol and Irpin, where there are “allegations of numerous civilian casualties.”

The Ukrainian Prosecutor General’s Office puts the number of child casualties even higher, reporting at least 148 children have been killed, and another 232 wounded. The OHCHR acknowledged the report.

OHCHR data shows the following breakdown:

  • 1,232 civilians killed: 250 men, 176 women, 18 girls, and 36 boys, as well as 58 children and 694 adults whose sex is unknown.
  • 1,935 civilians injured: 225 men, 167 women, 36 girls, and 32 boys, as well as 81 children and 1,394 adults whose sex is unknown.

Video Shows Cars Avoiding Landmines

Video has been widely viewed on social media showing cars driving around what appear to be landmines.

Cars approach the devices, slow down and position their vehicles to drive over them without making contact.

The road is thought to be the E373 near the village of Potashnya, north-west of Kyiv, the BBC reported.

Justin Crump, a former British Army tank commander, told the outlet that they looked like Soviet era TM-62M anti-tank mines, carrying around 16lb of explosives which could damage armored vehicles.

The video on Live Universal Awareness Map (Liveuamap), an independent global news information site, had over 2.5 million views as of Thursday afternoon.

Footage Shows Devastation of Mariupol

Further to the story of the attempts to evacuate residents from Mariupol, footage shared on social media shows the extent of the destruction in the southern port city.

The video verified by the BBC shows the damage to the Mariupol theatre which was bombed while hundreds of people sheltered in the building and the basement below. The word “children” can be seen written in Russian on the ground.

Ukrainian officials estimate that 300 people died at the theatre during the attack which Russia has denied carrying out.

Mariupol’s mayor says more than 5,000 people have been killed in the city, and 90 percent of its buildings damaged since the invasion began.

Bus Convoy To Evacuate People From Mariupol In Ceasefire

A convoy of 45 buses will attempt to evacuate people from the besieged southern Ukrainian city of Mariupol, amid doubt that a temporary ceasefire allowing people to leave the besieged city would hold.

Ukrainian Deputy Prime Minister Iryna Vereshchuk said the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) had confirmed Russia had agreed to open a humanitarian corridor to the port city in the south of the country.

The Russian defence ministry said the United Nations refugee agency and the Red Cross would assist in the evacuation of civilians starting from 10 a.m. local time.

It said a ceasefire would allow people to travel westwards to Zaporizhzhia via the Russian-controlled port of Berdyansk.

Some 160,000 people remain in port city on the Sea of Azov which Russian forces have encircled and shelled since the end of February.

The European Union has called the bombardment of the city a war crime.

Russian Troops Refuse Orders Says British Spy Chief

Russian troops in Ukraine are refusing to follow orders and sabotaging their own equipment, the head of Britain’s spy agency Government Communications Headquarters (GCHQ) has said.

Jeremy Fleming said in a speech in Canberra, Australia that there was evidence of rock-bottom morale among Russian soldiers, who even accidentally shot down one of their own aircraft during the Ukraine war.

GCHQ’s analysis hasn’t been independently confirmed yet but Fleming said President Vla dimir Putin ‘s plan for the invasion of Ukraine is “failing” and that the Russian president “has massively misjudged the situation” in Ukraine.

This included underestimating “the economic consequences of the sanction regime,” he said.

Fleming’s speech comes amid an assessment by U S. intelligence officials that Putin ‘s advisors are misinforming him about how his military is performing.

Third launch attempt for Boeing’s beleaguered Starliner spacecraft

May 19, 2022 by www.bangkokpost.com Leave a Comment

Lift-off for Orbital Test Flight 2 (OFT-2) is scheduled for 6:54 pm Eastern Time (2254 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida. with the spaceship fixed atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket

WASHINGTON – American aerospace giant Boeing is making a third attempt to reach the International Space Station Thursday in a critical uncrewed test flight for its Starliner capsule, which has been beset by numerous failures and false starts.

Lift-off for Orbital Test Flight 2 (OFT-2) is scheduled for 6:54 pm Eastern Time (2254 GMT) from the Kennedy Space Center in Florida, with the spaceship fixed atop a United Launch Alliance Atlas V rocket.

The mission’s success is key to repairing Boeing’s frayed reputation after the first bid, back in 2019, failed to dock with the ISS due to software bugs — one that led to it burning too much fuel to reach its destination, and another that could have destroyed the vehicle during re-entry.

A second try was scheduled in August of last year, but was rolled back from the launchpad to address sticky valves that weren’t opening as they should, and the capsule was eventually sent back to the factory for fixes.

Boeing and NASA say the drama is now behind them.

“There’s really no outstanding issues and we’re ready,” Mark Nappi, vice president and program manager of the Boeing Commercial Crew Program, said at a press conference this week.

NASA is looking to certify Starliner as a second “taxi” service for its astronauts to the space station — a role that Elon Musk’s SpaceX has provided since succeeding in a test mission for its Dragon capsule in 2020.

– Redemption day –

Both companies were awarded fixed-price contracts — $4.2 billion to Boeing, and $2.6 billion to SpaceX — in 2014, shortly after the end of the Space Shuttle program, during a time when the United States was left reliant on Russian Soyuz rockets for rides to the orbital outpost.

Boeing, with its hundred-year history, was considered by many as the sure shot, while then-upstart SpaceX was less proven.

In reality, it was SpaceX that rocketed ahead, and recently sent its fourth routine crew to the research platform — while Boeing’s development delays have cost the company hundreds of millions of dollars.

Starliner should dock with the ISS about 24 hours after launch, and deliver more than 500 pounds (226 kilograms) of cargo — including food and provisions like clothes and sleeping bags for the current crew on the station.

Its sole passenger is a mannequin named Rosie the Rocketeer — a play on the World War II campaign icon Rosie the Riveter — whose job is to collect flight data with her sensors in order to learn what human astronauts would experience.

“We are a little jealous of Rosie,” said NASA astronaut Mike Fincke, who is expected to be among the first crew selected for a manned demonstration mission should OFT-2 succeed.

The gumdrop-shaped capsule will spend about five to ten days in space, then undock and return to Earth, using giant parachutes to land in the desert of the western United States.

NASA sees a second provider to low Earth orbit as a vital backup, should SpaceX encounter problems.

“It’s a really critical step for us and moving towards having two routinely flying crewed vehicles who can bring our crew to and from ISS,” Dana Weigel, deputy program manager for the ISS, told reporters.

Harry—stripped of his military titles—will soon mark a major milestone

May 19, 2022 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

Prince Harry is approaching the 10-year anniversary of his life-changing second tour of Afghanistan in which he fired on the Taliban .

The Duke of Sussex left Britain for the front line in Helmand Province in September 2012, days before his 28th birthday.

Harry had been to the warzone before as part of Britain’s ground forces. But that tour was cut short when his presence was leaked by an international media outlet in defiance of a news blackout agreed to by the British press to boost his security.

When his presence became widely known, Harry was withdrawn just 10 weeks into his first deployment, in 2007.

However, the duke was determined not to repeat the disappointment the second time around in 2012. He not only completed his second tour but also experienced at least one moment powerful enough he compared it to his experiences with Princess Diana and Meghan Markle .

Harry told the Armchair Expert podcast in May 2021: “Helplessness, that is my biggest Achilles heel. There were three major times that I felt completely helpless, one when I was a kid in the back of a car with my mum being chased by paparazzi, two was in Afghanistan in an Apache helicopter, and then the third one was with my wife.”

Ten years on, Prince Harry has been stripped of honorary military titles given to him by the royal family, including the highly coveted role of Captain General of the Royal Marines.

However, he retains his medals, his rank and his experiences, which have in the intervening years allowed him to build a relationship with the forces community both in Britain and America .

Harry’s first tour saw him involved in a major operation to disrupt the Taliban’s communications and part of his role was to coordinate strikes from the ground, the BBC reported.

However, when he came back five years later, he had completed training as a co-pilot gunner on an Apache attack helicopter, operating in the skies above Helmand to offer covering fire for troops on the ground.

British newspaper The Sun reported that he killed a Taliban commander from the air in December 2012.

Harry was asked about the suggestion during an interview at the end of his tour. While he did not confirm that specific story, he acknowledged he had fired on the enemy.

The prince told the BBC : “If there’s people trying to do bad stuff to our guys, then we’ll take them out of the game, I suppose. Take a life to save a life. The squadron’s been out here. Everyone’s fired a certain amount.”

The prince also fired on Taliban forces who had ambushed American soldiers, giving the troops the opportunity to airlift to safety.

Among them was Christopher “Tripp” Zanetis, from Indiana, whose parents told The Sun of the royal’s role in the rescue.

John Zanetis, 73, his father, said: “Prince Harry came in with his protection squadron and blew the enemy to pieces.”

Sarah Zanetis, 63, his mother, said: “They provided enough cover for Tripp to get his men loaded on the helicopter. I believe there were Taliban members killed.”

It is possible the world may get to know a lot more about the prince’s time in Afghanistan later in 2022 when his memoirs are due for publication.

A press release, sent to Newsweek in July 2021, read: “Covering his lifetime in the public eye from childhood to the present day, including his dedication to service, the military duty that twice took him to the frontlines of Afghanistan, and the joy he has found in being a husband and father, Prince Harry will offer an honest and captivating personal portrait, one that shows readers that behind everything they think they know lies an inspiring, courageous, and uplifting human story.”

Harry’s past comments on his military service suggest there may be a powerful story to tell.

He told the Declassified podcast in November 2020: “I wear the Poppy to recognize all those who have served; the soldiers I knew, as well as those I didn’t. The soldiers who were by my side in Afghanistan, those who had their lives changed forever, and those that didn’t come home.”

He added: “Being able to wear my uniform, being able to stand up in service of one’s country, these are amongst the greatest honors there are in life.

“To me, the uniform is a symbol of something much bigger, it’s symbolic of our commitment to protecting our country, as well as protecting our values.

“These values are put in action through service, and service is what happens in the quiet and in the chaos. It’s what happens in the darkness, it’s what happens when people aren’t looking. It’s what happens on and off the battlefield.”
