Arizona coach Tommy Lloyd has a lot of work to do to get the Wildcats back to elite status out West, as the program slogged through the last couple of seasons under Sean Miller with potential NCAA penalties looming. Once Lloyd took over, Arizona saw some roster attrition that could hurt it in the short term — that’s part of making a coaching change in the transfer portal era.
Former 5-star recruit Jordan Brown is the latest player to enter the transfer portal, a source told 247Sports on Monday. Brown was named the Pac-12 Sixth Man of the Year this past season and initially started his career at Nevada before transferring to Arizona in 2019.
The 6-foot-11, 235-pound big man averaged 9.4 points per game and 5.2 rebounds on 56% shooting from the field last season and has three seasons of eligibility remaining. He projects to become one of the more highly sought-after players still available.
Miller previously said that Brown has big upside once he can get more minutes in the college game under his belt.
“He just has to get older, he has to get experience, more experience,” Miller said . “Jordan, by the standards of the game, isn’t a very experienced player. His freshman year at Nevada, although he had a role, he was on a very veteran team and his role wasn’t great. A year ago, although he practiced with us, he never played in a game last year and then COVID affected him about as much as anybody.”
“As you know, he can really score with his back to the basket,” Miller added. “Now rebounding, being a better defender, just learning to be a better passer. JB is a really unselfish guy, but sometimes he’s into his move and he doesn’t recognize the pass out. He’s starting to do that a little bit, so I just think that experience, a great offseason, more games, and I think you’ll continue to see a more polished, more improved, just a better overall player in Jordan.”
The NCAA introduced the portal on Oct. 15, 2018, providing athletes a path to explore their options. Players do not need to ask permission from their coaching staff in order to transfer. They merely need to request that compliance enter their name. Usually, it takes 24-48 hours for a player to appear following their request. Schools are free to contact a player without restriction once their name appears in the portal.
While a player entering their name in the transfer portal means they intend to explore their options, it does not necessarily mean they will leave. A player is free to withdraw his name at any time. However, schools are under no obligation to keep a player on scholarship once they enter the portal.
