Arsenal have £40m trump card for Arteta to use in Ivan Toney or Ollie Watkins transfer

Arteta gives Arsenal team news for Brentford Carabao Cup tie

Arsenal have a trump card that they can use in negotiations with Brentford and Aston Villa in the January transfer window – Eddie Nketiah. With a forward likely to arrive at the Emirates Stadium this summer, the striker will fall down the pecking order under Mikel Arteta and he could be used as part of a player-plus-cash deal.

The Gunners have had an unbeaten start to the season, winning four and drawing two of their opening six matches of the campaign. With the sprinkling of new signings now fully integrated into the team, Arteta will be hoping that he has a squad capable of going one better than last season and winning the Premier League .

But Arsenal still do not appear to be the finished article despite splashing the cash over the summer. Bukayo Saka and Martin Odegaard remain the Gunners’ most influential attackers and Arteta is in the market for a striker to add even more goals to the forward line.

Brentford star Ivan Toney is being heavily considered by Arsenal, with reports claiming that Villa star Ollie Watkins remains a target in north London despite his slow start to the season in front of goal. Both players would set Arsenal back significant sums given premiums are placed on players in January – and they are both England internationals proven at the very top level.

Therefore, the Gunners could be tempted to ‘cut costs’ by offering Nketiah as part of a deal involving one of the aforementioned stars. Nketiah would provide Villa or Brentford with a ready-made replacement who could prompt either side to lower their asking prices.

Over the summer it was reported by Just Arsenal that the higher powers at the Emirates Stadium would demand a fee in the region of £40million to sell Nketiah and that valuation is unlikely to have changed significantly given that he has featured on several occasions so far this season.

The Gunners using the 24-year-old as a makeweight in negotiations could give them the upper hand if other clubs arrive with offers for Toney or Watkins, who will both surely cost in excess of £60m.

Chelsea have also been linked with both players previously and are expected to be in the market for a striker in January after Nicolas Jackson’s slow start to life in the Premier League.

Tottenham are also in the race to sign Toney and have registered an interest, and following the sale of Harry Kane to Bayern Munich late in the summer, they will have the funds to be able to enter a bidding war if required.

So Arsenal may need to get clever in order to do a deal. Nketiah could the trump card they need to land the ruthless No 9 they’re searching for.

Arsenal told £100m striker will see Emirates as a ‘spiritual home’ as January swoop urged

Mikel Arteta and Ivan Toney

Arsenal could be a “spiritual home” for Brentford striker Ivan Toney, according to former Liverpool winger Steve McManaman. The Gunners are interested in signing the banned star in January who was once valued at £100million by manager Thomas Frank .

Toney hasn’t played since he was banned for eight months by the FA in May. He is back training with Brentford but cannot play for them until January 16.

But there is also a possibility he may have played his final game for the west London club. Arsenal are keen on a winter swoop for the 27-year-old, who scored 20 Premier League goals last season.

Mikel Arteta ‘s side are not the only team linked with Toney’s signature. Chelsea and Tottenham are also said to be tracking the player’s situation, while he has admitted he is a lifelong Liverpool fan.

Arsenal transfer news: Steve McManaman says Liverpool don’t need Ivan Toney (Image: GETTY)

McManaman does not believe his old club need a striker like Toney and also reckons Chelsea is an unlikely destination. Therefore he claims Arsenal could be an ideal place for Toney to call home.

McManaman told Betfred: “I believe Liverpool have enough forwards at the moment and they don’t need to make it six. If Mo Salah leaves in the summer then maybe this move would make sense but once January comes, I believe that Arsenal could be a spiritual home for Ivan Toney.

“I know that Arsenal and Brentford have a really good relationship, so maybe that would be a much easier route to take for Ivan. Chelsea might be interested in him because they’re seemingly interested in everybody else but after already spending £1 billion, it doesn’t make sense for them to sign another forward in January.”

Toney’s contract at Brentford expires in the summer of 2025. But that didn’t stop Frank from slapping a £100m price tag on his head earlier this year.

Whether that price will reduce as he hasn’t played for eight months remains to be seen. Frank said in May: “£100m-plus? I love Ivan and it’s fantastic what he has achieved here, and there is more for him to achieve here. I’m really happy he is a Brentford player.

“I know he is not 22, but look at some of the best strikers in the world: (Robert) Lewandowski, (Karim) Benzema. It’s like good wine; they just keep getting better.

“What would you pay for a striker that guarantees you 20-plus goals? And this is 20 goals for a mid-table club. What can he do in a bigger club?”

Arsenal may sanction January midfielder deal as club ‘to return with new approach’

Jorginho

Arsenal news: Jorginho could leave the Gunners in January (Image: GETTY)

Arsenal could allow Jorginho to leave in the January transfer window, according to reports. Fenerbahce are claimed to be ready to return with a new approach for the Italy international who has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates.

Jorginho is yet to start a Premier League match this season. He has come on as a substitute on four occasions as well as featuring off the bench in the Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven.

The summer arrival of Declan Rice meant Jorginho was always going to struggle for regular starts at the Emirates. Thomas Partey, when fit, is also ahead of him.

He was linked with a move away in the summer, just six months after he joined from Chelsea. Mikel Arteta was keen to keep him, especially with Mohamed Elneny not yet back from a serious knee injury.

Jorginho

Arsenal news: Jorginho is highly thought of at the Gunners (Image: GETTY)

But the situation could change midway through the campaign. Italian outlet Sport Italia claims Jorginho could be on his way out of Arsenal in January.

Fenerbahce were interested in signing him late in the summer. The transfer window in Turkey was open later than the Premier League but Jorginho’s agent ruled out an exit early in September.

But Sport Italia says Fenerbahce remain keen on Jorginho and are set to re-enter the race in an attempt to beat any other competition to his signature. Jorginho is in the final year of his contract but Arsenal do have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

Arsenal could protect Jorginho’s value and ask for a larger fee if they do trigger that option. Jorginho has lost his place in the Italy squad due to his lack of action at club level so would understandably be keen on winning that back.

Arteta has always been a fan of the 31-year-old and has often spoken glowingly about his impact on the dressing room. Jorginho made a crucial error in the north London derby against Tottenham last weekend.

He lost possession just moments after Arsenal had restored their lead to gift Tottenham a second equaliser. But Arteta only spoke of his love for Jorginho after the match.

He said: “What happened is I love him and we love him. Errors are part of football. They’re allowed to make errors because they play and we don’t play.

“For us it’s really easy, but if there is someone who is willing to help the team and do the most of it, it’s Jorgi. We are all with him.”

Arsenal star Emile Smith Rowe opens up on his ‘relief’ after first start in 499 days and admits he ‘had a lot of doubts’

September 28, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

EMILE SMITH ROWE has overcome his crisis of confidence and is finally ready to make his mark at Arsenal.

The young midfielder admits he was crippled by doubt as he struggled to nail down a regular place in Mikel Arteta’s team.

But a change of attitude has sparked fresh belief in his ability and now he is determined to show that all that early promise was not just a flash in the pan.

Wednesday’s Carabao Cup win at Brentford was Smith Rowe’s first start in 499 days for Arsenal .

And though he was unable to last the full 90 minutes, he still took enough encouragement from his performance to believe that his fortunes are about to change for the better.

Last season was a virtual write-off for the frustrated 23-year-old after he was sidelined for three months by a groin operation and was then unable to force his way back into a team fighting for the Premier League title.

But he was a key player in England’s summer triumph at the Euro Under-21 Championships and is now knocking firmly on the Arsenal door for more first team minutes.

He admits “I used to have a lot of doubts. I didn’t have a lot of confidence and I questioned myself at times.

“But I have changed my mentality and now I am just going to go for it because I really don’t have anything to lose.

“Last season was a really tough period for me, having surgery for the first time and then suffering another setback when I finally got back onto the pitch.

“It was really challenging but the gaffer helped me through that period because he supported me through the injury and he often pulled me in for chats about how I could become mentally stronger.

“He’s told me that I have to stay patient and to keep working hard in training and there’s a lot of stuff I’ve been working on to improve.

“It’s been a long wait to get back into the team and it has been a challenge, but I’m enjoying it and now I feel happy and really fit.

“It’s definitely a relief for me and now I am going to push on from here.”

One thing which has never been in doubt has been the backing of Smith Rowe’s team-mates and the Arsenal supporters.

The loudest cheer of last week’s 4-0 Champions League win against PSV Eindhoven came when he was introduced as a second-half substitute and he says: “To hear the fans singing my name was a really proud moment for me and all my family.

“I had the whole team behind me when I was going through surgery. They all had my back and that definitely made me feel stronger.

“It’s such a talented team at Arsenal with so much quality, so I know that I have to stay patient and wait for my chance.

Man Utd, Arsenal and Liverpool ‘to rival City in race for £50m-rated Brentford star after red-hot start to 2023-24’

September 28, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

MANCHESTER CITY are facing competition from three Premier League rivals for Brentford’s Aaron Hickey.

Arsenal , Liverpool and Manchester United have joined the race and are ready to make bids for the £50million-rated Scottish defender.

The 21-year-old full-back has been in remarkable form for both club and country – attracting interest from a the Premier League’s big-hitters in the process.

SunSport exclusively revealed earlier this year that City were chasing Hickey, who was then rated at £30m.

And Pep Guardiola remains keen on the Bees star, despite seeing his side win six out of six in a flawless start to the season.

But it won’t be easy, with the Mirror reporting title rivals Arsenal and Liverpool, as well as neighbours United interested too.

German giants Bayern Munich who already poached Harry Kane from the Prem this summer, are also keen.

And Hickey’s performances have seen his price-tag continue to rise too, with Brentford set to demand at least £50m.

Bees boss Thomas Frank will be gutted if he loses another key asset with Rico Henry sidelined due to a serious knee injury, and suspended talisman Ivan Toney set to depart in January.

Frank spoke about Hickey’s versatility and importance in the Bees squad.

He said: “With Aaron there is a lot of talk about whether he is a right back or a left-back, but I am in that privileged position that he can play on both sides and will most likely go on the left.

“He is both-footed and has huge ability, we don’t have that many full-backs so he is very important.

“He is a player we signed a year ago with big ambitions and his future and it is going in the right direction for him.”

Gunners boss Mikel Arteta has made it clear how much he rates Hickey’s ability to play on either flank and is ready to fight for his signature.

United meanwhile are desperate to add to their full-backs with Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka suffering injuries.

Liverpool are keen to reboot what Jurgen Klopp is calling ‘Liverpool 2.0’ with youthful talent and Hickey fits the bill perfectly.

The Brentford star started out as a left-back for Hearts before making his way to the Serie A side Bologna in 2020.

Hickey then made his debut in 2022 for the Premier League and has since made a remarkable start under Frank.
