Residents call for cleanup after mass fish death in Australia’s New South Wales

March 20, 2023 by www.asiaone.com Leave a Comment

SYDNEY — Residents in a remote Australian town are calling for authorities to act promptly and begin a clean-up, after hundreds of thousands of dead fish were found floating in the nearby Darling River.

Low levels of oxygen in Australia’s second-longest river are to blame for the mass fish death late last week near the town of Menindee in New South Wales state, around 1,000km west of the state capital Sydney, environmental authorities said.

It follows fish deaths in the same area in 2018 and 2019 where up to a million fish died from poor water flow, poor water quality, and sudden temperature changes.

“Other than rainwater… we 100 percent rely on that river for our household domestic use,” Karen Page, a Menindee resident, told state broadcaster ABC.

“As soon as they’ve seen what was happening, they should’ve had that equipment here. They should’ve already been cleaning this out.”

New South Wales Police said late on Sunday (March 19) that an emergency operations centre was being set up in Menindee to coordinate the disposal of the decomposing fish and to organise the supply of clean water.

Joy Becker, a professor of aquatic animal health at the University of Sydney, said it would take a significant amount of time for the river’s ecosystem to recover.

“It does mean that those populations (of fish) may not rebound as quickly or at the same magnitude,” she said.

“Pest species can actually just take over that spot, which makes it even harder for native fish to recover.”

Marcel Sabitzer says he wants to experience more cup glory with Manchester United before he packs his bags in the summer. The Austria international, 29, scored the first goal of his Old Trafford career against Fulham on Sunday .

That helped put United in a Wembley FA Cup semi-final against Brighton, with the prize of victory a showdown with either Manchester City or Sheffield United in the final on June 3. But after having played in the Carabao Cup final as well as the Europa League for the Red Devils, Sabitzer is determined to leave a lasting impression from his time in Manchester.

“First of all we have to take Brighton and they are a tough opponent, a good team. But at Wembley, we can expect a lot,” the Bayern Munich man on loan at United said.

“We are prepared for it. We are excited, and we want to go to the final. I am very happy to be part of this team though, this amazing club, and I feel very welcomed.”

Sabitzer was a late draft-in from Bayern in the closing days of the January window after Christian Eriksen was ruled out until late April with an ankle injury. But is Eriksen ahead of target and on course to return after the international break.

While manager Erik ten Hag also still harbours ambitions of luring in Frenkie de Jong from Barcelona and that means Sabitzer could be surplus to requirements by summer. He added: “I had to make a quick decision to join in January.

“I was focused on this, it was clear it is just a loan until the summer. But I take every game as it comes, I am very happy to be here. I will give 100 per cent. Whatever happens in the summer, we will see.”

Sabitzer could return to Munich to fight for a place but having showcased his skills a move to a rival Premier League club might be a more likely outcome. The midfielder explained: “I can play all over midfield and I like to do the dirty work.

“I like to run, to go forward, box-to-box movements. A lot of transitions and high-intensity games are what I am having here and I am very happy.” United’s come-from-behind win on Sunday was their seventh this season and second in the FA Cup following a replica 1-3 scoreline against West Ham in the last round.

Despite the effort to haul themselves back in front and an accumulation of games given their runs in three Cup competitions boss Ten Hag insisted there must be no let up from his squad from now until May. “I think we are in the position we want where to be – to win trophies – but we have to fight for it,” he said. “We need the whole squad because we already played a game from Christmas on every third, fourth day and that will continue until the end of the season.

“But that is what we love, that will give us energy when you can compete for trophies, when you are in the position where you want to be, that gives you also energy.” United now enjoy a break until their next match which comes when they travel to St James’ Park to take on high-flying Newcastle on April 2.

Ten Hag’s charges got the better of the Magpies at Wembley in the League Cup final last month but the two teams drew 0-0 in the league earlier this season at Old Trafford. Victory for Newcastle on home soil would see them leapfrog United in the table courtesy of a superior goal difference.

United’s hopes of adding the FA Cup to their League Cup and winning a treble this season appeared in danger when Aleksandar Mitrovic put Fulham ahead after half-time.

But the game turned on its head in an extraordinary two-minute period in which Fulham lost two players, their manager and the lead.

The drama began when a United counter-attacked culminated in former Arsenal and Chelsea winger Willian blocking Jadon Sancho’s shot on the line with his right arm.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially missed the infringement but was sent to the pitchside monitor by VAR and gave Willian his marching orders.

In the process of going to the monitor, Kavanagh dismissed a fuming Fulham boss Marco Silva, and after returning to the pitch he sent off Mitrovic who grabbed the referee as he protested the decisions.

On William’s red card – which led to dismissals to Silva and Mitrovic – Ten Hag added: ‘It was so clear and obvious.

‘Handball in the box is a clear penalty. But it’s not for me to comment on them. It’s for me to talk about Manchester United and that’s it.’

Ten Hag also heaped praise on Manchester United loanee Sabitzer, who scored his first goal for the club to give the hosts the lead shortly after Fulham’s implosion.

‘He had a great performance,’ Ten Hag said of the Bayern Munich midfielder. ‘We are glad he is back from injury.

‘We will be playing a game every three days between now and the end of the season so we need as many fit players as possible.’

Ten Hag, who guided Manchester United to their first trophy since 2017 last month, added: ‘We are through, we are happy with the win.

‘We showed great character. Every time this team comes out, they show the personality and the determination needed.

‘Fulham are a good team and you have to be good to overcome them. I think we had a good first half. We had great moments in the attacking transition and we should have been two or three goals up.

‘This team has great character. We are mentally and physically fit, and I’m happy with our progress as a team.’

The Red Devils will face Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals, while Premier League champions Manchester City take on Sheffield United.

‘The next game is a long way away,’ Ten Hag said. ‘The players will go away on the international break while we analyse the recent period. Then it’s about Newcastle, Brentford and Everton.’

Seven minutes of mayhem turns FA Cup tie around, as Fulham have three sent off against Manchester United

March 20, 2023 by www.abc.net.au Leave a Comment

It was all set up for a famous FA Cup upset as Fulham led treble-chasing Manchester United at Old Trafford on Sunday.

But in the space of seven chaotic second-half minutes, the visitors were reduced to nine players, had their manager sent off and conceded twice.

It was a meltdown of epic proportions, and United capitalised on it in ruthless fashion to advance to the semifinals with a 3-1 win that keeps the team’s three-pronged trophy pursuit on track.

There is also the prospect of a mouth-watering FA Cup final against Manchester City after the rivals were kept apart in the draw for the last four.

Thoughts of an all-Manchester showdown at Wembley on June 3, however, looked in serious doubt after Aleksandar Mitrovic fired Fulham ahead in the 50th minute of the quarterfinal match.

That was before the game was turned upside down as Fulham’s players and manager Marco Silva lost control.

Here’s how it all unfolded:

69 minutes, 20-35 seconds: The visitors had been pushing for a second goal that could have all but killed off the tie, as they attacked the Manchester United goal. Successive crosses were cleared away, and finally Harry Maguire’s header got the ball out on the right wing.

A through ball found Antony, who raced clear down the right before holding the ball up and playing through young forward Jadon Sancho. Sancho rounded the keeper, cut in and fired a shot inside the near post.

69:40: The shot was blocked by Fulham’s Brazilian midfielder Willian on the goal line, as the crowd called for a penalty and Manchester United players pleaded with referee Chris Kavanagh.

70:00 The incident was referred to VAR, as Willian claimed the ball hit his hand clenched in front of his chest. Replays, however, showed otherwise, with vision showing Willian deliberately bringing his hand down to block the ball.

70:45: The referee ran off the field to check the replays himself on the sideline video monitor.

71:00: Kavanagh was standing by the monitor watching the replay, when suddenly he looked to his right, walked towards the technical area, pulled out a red card and sent off Fulham manager Marco Silva for dissent from the dugout. The crowd roared.

71:20: Kavanagh returned to the screen and began looking at the replay.

71:35: After several views, the referee made up his mind and went back onto the pitch. Things moved swiftly after that.

71:44: He made the signal for a decision overturned and pointed towards the penalty spot as the United fans bellowed louder. A few seconds later, Kavanagh pulled out a red card and showed it to Willian for his deliberate handball in the last line of defence. Fulham were down to 10 men.

71:50: Within seconds it all kicked off, as an incensed Mitrovic stalked over and got in the referee’s face, shouting and gesticulating. Willian walked over to try to calm his teammate down,  but Kavanagh pulled out a red card for the third time in less than a minute.

Fulham were now down to nine men. Mitrovic was still angry, and he followed Kavanagh across the field, still shouting as the referee walked backwards to keep him in sight.

72:00: United goalkeeper David de Gea came over and put his arm around Mitrovic, trying to guide him away as the Old Trafford crowd roared even louder.

72:15: The benches emptied as players from both sides gathered around Kavanagh, and chaos ensued.

72:25: Fulham players and trainers continued to try to drag Mitrovic away. He finally accepted the situation.

73:15-73:45: Mitrovic and Willian made their way very slowly off the ground and up the tunnel as players waited to resume the game.

74:00-74:20: Players still gathered around the referee near the penalty area. Mitrovic could be seen on camera still watching proceedings from inside the tunnel.

74:45: Bruno Fernandes finally stepped up to take the penalty, sidling to his left, then stutter-stepping before wrong-footing the keeper and putting the ball in the corner of the net.

It was a catastrophe for Fulham, and from the restart they turned the ball over in attack. United went down the right again before Antony centred the ball. It ended up on the left, where Sancho played it through to Luke Shaw and his cross was backheeled in by Marcel Sabitzer to give the home side the lead.

It was 76 minutes and 20 seconds. In just seven minutes, the game had gone for Fulham.

Fernandes added a third in injury time to complete the scoring, and Fulham’s Cup hopes were over.

“Even if I haven’t done something special, I have to control myself,” Silva said afterward.

“I didn’t say anything special to the ref, he didn’t listen and showed me the red card. It is a moment to control my emotions. The game was decided in the moment.”

Manager Erik ten Hag has already led United to victory in the League Cup this season and his team is also into the quarterfinals of the Europa League where it faces Sevilla.

“One thing is important — don’t think too far ahead,” Ten Hag said. “Go from game to game.

“We see the progress in the team, but this team has a strong character, strong belief, strong determination to win games. Today was an example of it. When you have a difficult period in a game, stay in the game and turn the game.”

Mitrovic will receive at least an automatic three-game ban for his sending off, which had echoes of an infamous incident involving Paulo di Canio in 1998.

The then-Sheffield Wednesday striker was banned for 11 games after shoving referee Paul Alcock to the ground during a match.

“I saw the image and I spoke with Mitro. It is a moment for him to control the emotions,” Silva said.

“He pushed the referee but I did not see that in so bad, bad way like you are saying to me. But I hope the people who are going to decide [do so] with fairness.”

In the other quarterfinals, Brighton thumped Grimsby 5-0, including two goals from young Irish striker Evan Ferguson; Sheffield United came from 2-1 down against Blackburn Rovers to score in injury time for a 3-2 win; and Manchester City crushed Burnley 6-0 to advance to the last four.

The draw will see City play Sheffield United at Wembley on April 22, with Brighton facing United at the same venue a day later.

Micah Richards has slammed what he perceives to be inconsistent refereeing in the wake of Manchester United ’s 3-1 FA Cup win over Fulham on Sunday. A Bruno Fernandes double and Marcel Sabitzer strike gave the Red Devils a huge victory at Old Trafford. And it means their hopes of a cup treble remain alive, even if they weren’t at their best.

Manchester United benefitted from three Fulham red cards on a chaotic afternoon of FA Cup football at Old Trafford.

Marco Silva, Willian and Aleksandar Mitrovic all received their marching orders as the Cottagers lost their heads, with Fernandes and Sabitzer going on to punish the trio for their actions.

Former Manchester City star Richards does, however, think the standard of refereeing is too inconsistent – and thinks Fernandes should have been penalised for shoving a linesman during United’s recent 7-0 defeat to Liverpool.

Writing for the Daily Mail , he said: “Willian had to be sent off during the chaos at Old Trafford, Aleksandar Mitrovic had to go for jostling referee Chris Kavanagh and Marco Silva overstepped the mark, too.

“But I couldn’t help think back to when Bruno Fernandes put his hands on a linesman at Liverpool two weeks ago and referee Andy Madley did nothing.

“Has Kavanagh shown us what is going to happen from now on, as there have been far worse incidents of dissent than Mitrovic and Silva?

“Or will things remain consistently inconsistent? I think we all know the answer.”

Mitrovic crossed a line on Sunday as he gave referee Chris Kavanagh a shove as his temper boiled over.

Yet manager Silva still bemoaned ‘inconsistencies’ following the game, believing his side were unfairly treated.

“It’s tough to take to accept some decisions,” he said.

“The first one is clear, it’s clear a clear penalty when Luke Shaw pushed Mitrovic – clear, clear penalty. Later there were a bunch of players who pushed Mitrovic in the back.

“It’s difficult to understand why with Manchester United they do one thing and why with Fulham they don’t do the other thing.

“At that moment of course with the red card for Willian, we should control it in a different way. Our emotions, I should be in the touchline and shouldn’t be speaking with the referee in the moment he’s going to see the screen.

“If that’s the reason for him giving me the red card I have to accept that. I shouldn’t have gone [to him].

As for United boss Erik ten Hag, the Dutchman shrugged off questions over Fulham’s indiscipline when quizzed on the matter.

“I don’t want to emphasise that. It was a great counter-attack but I think everyone saw it was handball,” he said.

On his side’s victory, he added: “That was the aim. We did it, we are happy with the win.
