New this week

Sex Education

Netflix’s breakout comedy hit, Sex Education , is back for its fourth season as Otis (Asa Butterfield), Eric (Ncuti Gatwa), and their friends adjust to their new school, Cavendish Sixth Form College. It’s a big change from their days at Moordale, and Otis is particularly unsettled by the way that Eric goes off to join the popular students. Even Otis’ talents as a sex therapist may not be needed at such an open and accepting school environment.

Meanwhile, Otis’ longtime crush, Maeve (Emma Mackey) is off at school in the U.S. and charting her own academic path. But will Otis and Maeve be able to find their way back to each other before they take the next step in their lives?

Genre: Comedy Stars: Asa Butterfield, Gillian Anderson, Ncuti Gatwa, Emma Mackey, Connor Swindells Seasons: 4

New Amsterdam

NBC’s medical drama New Amsterdam has come to an end, and the show’s fifth and final season has now arrived on Netflix. The series stars Ryan Eggold as Max Goodwin, a doctor who doesn’t like red tape getting in the way of treating patients. So when Max takes over New Amsterdam Medical Center, he puts in place a number of changes that are designed to help both the doctors and the patients.

Season 5 begins with Max trying to come to terms with the end of his relationship with Dr. Helen Sharpe (Freema Agyeman), while also attempting to welcome his new colleague, Dr. Elizabeth Wilder (Sandra Mae Frank), into the fold. This is the season that will determine Max’s destiny in medicine, and what kind of legacy he’s going to leave behind.

Genre: Drama Stars: Ryan Eggold, Janet Montgomery, Freema Agyeman, Jocko Sims, Tyler Labine Seasons: 5

Drama

Band of Brothers

War is hell, and Band of Brothers never lets the viewers forget the high price that it takes on the men who fought through the darkest days of World War II. This epic miniseries is a dramatization about the real-life exploits of Easy Company, one of the army’s Parachute Infantry Regiments, during the war. Easy Company’s story begins in 1942, and flows through the invasion of Normandy and other European battles before the focus shifts to the Pacific and a potential campaign in Japan.

Billions ’ Damian Lewis has a starring role as Major Richard “Dick” Winters, and you’ll see a lot of familiar faces in this miniseries. But don’t get too attached to anyone. Not everyone in Easy Company will make it through to the other side of the war.

Genre: Drama Stars: Damian Lewis, Kirk Acevedo, Eion Bailey, Michael Cudlitz, Dale Dye, Rick Gomez, Scott Grimes, Frank John Hughes Seasons: 1

Dear Child

At first glance, Dear Child appears to be a lot like the movie Room , as Lena (Kim Riedle) escapes from captivity alongside her daughter, Hannah (Naila Schuberth). Lena disappeared over a decade ago, but her parents, Matthias (Justus von Dohnányi) and Karin Beck (Julika Jenkins), are adamant that she isn’t their daughter. And yet Hannah is almost the spitting image of their missing daughter.

It falls to police investigator Aida Kurt (Haley Louise Jones) to sort out this mystery. What Aida finds is that there was much more to Lena’s abduction than she could have guessed, and she may be able to keep history from repeating itself.

Genre: Thriller, Drama Stars: Kim Riedle, Naila Schuberth, Sammy Schrein, Hans Löw, Haley Louise Jones Seasons: 1

Who is Erin Carter?

Who is Erin Carter? You will find out very quickly in Netflix’s new crime thriller, as an unassuming teacher living in Spain, Erin Carter (Evin Ahmad), breaks up a robbery with shocking skill and speed. Unfortunately for Erin, that means people are going to be asking some very uncomfortable questions about how she could do any of that. Erin’s daughter, Harper (Indica Watson), and her husband, Jordi (Sean Teale), want to know about her past as well.

More alarmingly, the surviving robber seems to have recognized Erin from a life she left behind. And now that Erin has exposed her hidden skill set, she can’t hide in plain sight any longer.

Genre: Crime, Thriller, Drama Stars: Evin Ahmad, Sean Teale, Indica Watson, Denise Gough, Douglas Henshall Seasons: 1

Ragnarok

Superhero fans are so used to seeing Thor in Marvel’s movies that it’s easy to forget that these myths and legends existed long before the comic books came along. Netflix’s Ragnarok offers a new take on the concept as a local high school student in Norway, Magne Seier (David Stakston), discovers that he is the reincarnation of Thor. And some of Thor’s enemies are living in his town as the wealthy Jutul family — and they are the ones who are severely polluting the city and making it unlivable.

In the third season, Magne has to continue fighting the Jutul without his hammer, and he’s on the verge of alienating the allies he’s made along the way. But Ragnarok looms for the reborn Norse gods as the series heads toward its conclusion.

Genre: Fantasy, Drama Stars: Adam Price, Simen Alsvik, Marietta von Hausswolff von Baumgarten, Christian Gamst Miller-Harris Seasons: 3

Painkiller

You may notice some similarities between Netflix’s Painkiller and Hulu’s Dopesick , but that’s because they are essentially telling the same story. Painkiller is a dramatization of the rise of OxyContin and the subsequent opioid crisis that still has its grip on this country. Uzo Aduba stars as Edie Flowers, a U.S. Attorney who has been tasked with taking down Richard Sackler (Matthew Broderick), the owner of Purdue and one of the men personally responsible for this mess.

Broderick’s performance is particularly notable because he portrays Sackler as a man without even a trace of humanity. He simply doesn’t care about anyone else. But viewers may find themselves caught up in the stories of addicts like Glen Kryger (Taylor Kitsch), and the real-life testimonials of families who have lost someone to opioids.

Genre: Drama Stars: Uzo Aduba, Matthew Broderick, Sam Anderson, Taylor Kitsch, Carolina Bartczak Seasons: 1

The Lincoln Lawyer

The Lincoln Lawyer season 2 began with Mickey Haller ( Manuel Garcia-Rulfo ) taking a brutal beating, and that’s also where part 1 of the season left us. Season 2 part 2 picks up from there as Mickey finds himself in quite a bind. His new client Lisa Trammell (Lana Parrilla) is facing murder charges that may land her in prison for life. And the evidence that she may have done it keeps piling up.

To make matters worse for Mickey, he’s falling hard for Lisa. But a true crime podcaster named Henry Dahl (Matt Angel) seems determined to get between them so he can exploit Lisa’s story for his own gain.

Genre: Drama Stars: Manuel Garcia-Rulfo, Neve Campbell, Becki Newton, Jazz Raycole, Angus Sampson Seasons: 2

Heartstopper

In the first season of Heartstopper , Charlie Spring (Joe Locke) found himself drawn to his fellow student, the popular and athletic Nick Nelson (Kit Connor), even though all outward indicators made Charlie believe that Nick was straight. But it turns out that Charlie’s instincts were right all along.

Season 2 picks up with Charlie and Nick in a relationship even though the latter is having some extreme difficulty coming out to his friends and teammates. And more challenges lie ahead for the couple from the toxic people who are still in their lives.

Genre: Romance, Drama, Comedy Stars: Kit Connor, Joe Locke, William Gao, Yasmin Finney Seasons: 2

The Witcher

Geralt of Rivia (Henry Cavill) and Yennefer of Vengerberg (Anya Chalotra) now know who’s been pulling their strings in the Continent, but that knowledge might not be enough to save them as The Witcher returns with the final three episodes of season 3.

With Geralt waylaid and fighting for his life, Ciri (Freya Allan) is off on an adventure of her own that may prove to be a transformative experience. But all roads lead back to Geralt as the series faces a turning point and a very, very long wait until the fourth season arrives.

Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Action, Drama Stars: Henry Cavill, Freya Allan, Anya Chalotra, Eamon Farren Seasons: 3

Suits

It says a lot about Suits ’ enduring popularity that the show has been at the top of Netflix’s most-watched charts despite ending four years ago. The series follows the unlikely partnership between prominent attorney Harvey Specter (Gabriel Macht), and a brilliant con man, Mike Ross (Patrick J. Adams). Harvey is so impressed by Mike’s legal knowledge that he hires him on the spot to be his associate despite knowing full well that he never went to law school.

Harvey and Mike’s efforts help the firm win several high-profile cases, even as Mike’s secret threatens to emerge. Meanwhile, Mike catches the eye of Rachel Zane (Meghan Markle), an ambitious paralegal with her own plans to advance in the legal world.

Genre: Drama, Comedy Stars: Gabriel Macht, Patrick J. Adams, Rick Hoffman, Meghan Markle, Gina Torres Seasons: 9

Sweet Magnolias

There’s not much serenity in Serenity, South Carolina in the new season of Sweet Magnolias . The three women at the heart of the show, Maddie Townsend (JoAnna Garcia Swisher), Dana Sue Sullivan (Brooke Elliott), and Helen Decatur (Heather Headley), share a special friendship with each other. This season, those bonds are tested as the trio pulls away from each other in anger. But what will it take to bring them back together?

The Surrogacy

Get ready for some soapy thrills in The Surrogacy , the latest Mexican telenovela to arrive on Netflix. Over time, Yeni and Carlos start to develop feelings for each other, but when the day of the birth arrives, Yeni is surprised when she is left alone with her disabled son and unaware that her daughter has been kept by the couple. That’s a secret that Julia will do anything to protect.

Genre: Drama, Romance Stars: Marcela Guirado, Leticia Calderón, Luis Ernesto Franco, Fernanda Borches Seasons: 1`

Black Mirror

The dark sci-fi anthology series, Black Mirror , is back on Netflix for another twisted season. Each episode has a self-contained story, and the first installment of the sixth season actually targets Netflix itself! Schitt’s Creek ‘s Annie Murphy stars as Joan, a woman who discovers that the Netflix of her world, Streamberry, is essentially stealing her life in real-time with Salma Hayek portraying Joan’s fictional self in the original series, Joan is Awful .

But that’s only one of the five new episodes waiting for fans. As with the previous seasons, series creator Charlie Brooker has attracted a lot of big-name performers to share the small screen in his stories. And each episode of Black Mirror is a mind-bending experience.

Genre: Sci-fi, Drama Stars: Annie Murphy, Salma Hayek, Aaron Paul, Josh Hartnett, Zazie Beetz Seasons: 6

Manifest

Manifest fans, take a bow. This series would have been a casualty of a network TV cancellation if the fans hadn’t streamed the show in huge numbers on Netflix. Thanks to those efforts, the fourth and final season is now complete on Netflix. And this time, the story has a proper conclusion.

The show follows the passengers on Montego Air Flight 828, whose turbulent journey somehow kept them from landing until over half a decade had passed. Soon after, the passengers band together as they realize that their disappearance and return have a purpose. But every single one of the passengers has a death date, and their time is limited as they attempt to find out why they came back and what they are supposed to do.

S.W.A.T.

Earlier this month, CBS canceled S.W.A.T. after six seasons, only to reverse course and renew the show for a seventh and final season after a massive outcry. Now, the first five seasons of S.W.A.T. are on Netflix, and the show has already jumped to the #2 slot in TV for the week. It’s almost like the fans are sending the powers that be a message.

Shemar Moore headlines the series as Daniel “Hondo” Harrelson, a leader of a Special Weapons and Tactics unit in the Los Angeles Police Department. Hondo has a good reputation with the citizens of his city, but he and his team still face the difficult task of taking down the bad guys without alienating the innocent people who live there. Hondo’s job is also made more difficult by racism and corruption in his own department. Somehow, Hondo has to hold it all together while making time for himself as well.

Genre: Drama Stars: Shemar Moore, Alex Russell, Lina Esco, Kenny Johnson, Jay Harrington Seasons: 5

Genre: Romance, Drama Stars: Anna Cathcart, Choi Min-young, Anthony Keyvan Seasons: 1

Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story

Netflix’s smash-hit Bridgerton presented an alternate timeline in which people of color were among Britain’s high society in the early 19th century. Queen Charlotte: A Bridgerton Story is the prequel series that reveals how this timeline diverged as young Charlotte (India Amarteifio) rises to power in 1761 as the wife of King George III (Corey Mylchreest).

Golda Rosheuvel also reprises her role as the older Queen Charlotte from Bridgerton in 1817 as she faces a royal crisis. Charlotte’s daughter, Princess Charlotte, has died in childbirth, leaving the royal family without an heir. And that’s something that the queen will do anything to change.

Genre: Romance, Drama Stars: Wataru Ichinose, Shota Sometani, Shioli Kutsuna Seasons: 1

Firefly Lane

Although Firefly Lane received an extended season 2 order, this is the end of the road for Kate Mularkey (Sarah Chalke) and Tully Hart (Katherine Heigl). Their friendship is at the heart of the series, and the show explores their connection at different points in their lives, from their teenage years to middle age in the present.

The second half of season 2 finds Kate and Tully’s bond challenged like never before, as they are forced to spend an extended time apart from each other. There are also secrets that could come between them. Their friendship is a powerful thing, but even that power has limits as the series wraps up its run.

Genre: Drama Stars: Katherine Heigl, Sarah Chalke Seasons: 2

The Diplomat

Keri Russell has played everything from the all-American girl in Felicity to a deadly Russian spy in The Americans . So it seems fitting that Netflix has put Russell in the lead of its new political drama, The Diplomat , which plays like Homeland by way of The West Wing . That’s appropriate because series creator Debora Cahn worked on both of those shows.

Russell plays Kate Wyler, a seasoned crisis management expert who finds herself named as the new American ambassador to the U.K. as her marriage to Hal Wyler (Rufus Sewell) is falling apart. Before Kate can even catch her breath, she is thrust into a high-stakes position when Britain is attacked, and Hal’s decisions appear to undermine her duties.

Despite being strangers to each other before the incident, Danny and Amy’s lives become intricately tangled as their mutual rage for each other intensifies. This is not going to end well for either of them, but it’s almost impossible to look away from the carnage they leave in their wake.

Genre: Fantasy, Adventure, Comedy Stars: Abbi Jacobson, Eric André, Nat Faxon, John DiMaggio, Tress MacNeille, Matt Berry Seasons: 3

Ballers

It still feels weird seeing an HBO original series move over to Netflix for its afterlife. Ballers plays as if Entourage was rebooted in the world of professional sports. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson (before he was Black Adam ) headlines the cast as Spencer Strasmore, an ex-NFL player who is attempting to find a new path as a financial manager for pro athletes.

As much as Spencer struggles in his new role, Charles Greane (Omar Miller), has it even worse. Charles is also a former NFL player, but he is forced to question whether he retired too soon when the only work he can find is as a car salesman. Spencer, Charles, and their mutual friends will eventually come together, but there are definite roadblocks ahead as they search for their second act in sports.

Genre: Comedy, Drama Stars: Dwayne Johnson, Rob Corddry, John David Washington, Omar Miller, Donovan W. Carter Seasons: 5

Insecure

Why is there suddenly an HBO series on Netflix? You can thank David Zaslav for that. Insecure was largely a sleeper hit for HBO during its five-season run. Series co-creator Issa Rae headlines the series as Issa, while Yvonne Orji co-stars as Issa’s best friend, Molly.

Issa and Molly have known each other for years, but they are at very different moments in their lives. Issa has a boyfriend, Lawrence (Jay Ellis), but the spark has gone out of their relationship. However, Luke is soon forced back into action in order to pull one of the CIA’s best operatives out of a deadly situation. And the operative in question is Luke’s daughter, Emma (Monica Barbaro).

Since neither Luke nor Emma knew about their respective CIA affiliation, the father-and-daughter duo are suddenly at odds with each other. Unstable

Rob Lowe and his son, John Owen Lowe, co-created Unstable (with Victor Fresco), and co-star in the series as a father and son duo, Ellis and Jackson Dragon. But even in the face of emotional devastation, Ellis always has to be the center of attention.

Regardless, Jackson feels the need to help his father through this ordeal even though their personalities are polar opposites. And now Jackson, who is painfully shy and socially inept, finds himself working for his father and thrust into a workplace comedy.

Genre: Comedy Stars: Rob Lowe, John Owen Lowe, Sian Clifford Seasons: 1

Season 5 of Cobra Kai premiered in September 2022.

Genre: Comedy/Drama Stars: Ralph Macchio, William Zabka Seasons: 5

Mystery and Crime

The Night Agent

It took The Night Agent less than a day to race to the top of Netflix’s TV series rankings, and it seems likely to make its leads, Gabriel Basso and Luciane Buchanan, into much bigger stars. As adapted for television by The Shield creator Shawn Ryan, this intense action thriller follows FBI Agent Peter Sutherland (Basso) after he stumbles upon clues that reveal a Russian mole is working inside the U.S. government.

Realizing that the fate of the country may be at stake, Peter will stop at nothing to unravel the conspiracy and unmask the mole. He also has an unlikely ally in Rose Larkin (Buchanan), a young CEO who has already been marked for death by their mutual enemies.

The 10-episode series follows a group of young, terminally ill residents of a hospice who gather each night to tell each other spooky stories. The members of the “Midnight Club” make a pact that whoever dies first will try to send a message from the afterlife. With Flanagan at the helm of this show, be prepared for big scares.

Supernatural

The longest-running American live-action fantasy series in TV history, Supernatural follows brothers Sam and Dan Winchester — played by Jared Padalecki and Jensen Ackles, respectively — as they hunt all manner of ghosts, demons, and monsters across America. Mixing standalone “monster of the week” adventures with season-long story arcs that built an impressively deep mythology around the show, Supernatural kept fans coming back for its infectious chemistry and colorful cast that grew as the series progressed.

A scripted television series has to be doing something right to run for 15 seasons without being canceled, and Supernatural finally ended its 327-episode run in November 2020 with the sort of satisfying, well-received series finale that few shows receive.

Genre: Horror/Mystery Stars: Jared Padalecki, Jensen Ackles Seasons: 1

Sci-Fi and Fantasy

One Piece

The One Piece manga and anime have been incredibly popular for decades, and now Netflix is bringing it to live-action in a new original series. Iñaki Godoy headlines the show as Monkey D. Luffy, a pirate who has elastic-like stretching powers and grand ambitions of becoming the pirate king if he can locate the fabled One Piece treasure.

Sweet Tooth

Even before COVID, there were a lot of stories about a pandemic devastating the world. Sweet Tooth , based on the comic book series of the same name by Jeff Lemire, is among them. Sweet Tooth is also the nickname of Gus (Christian Convery), a 10-year-old child who is a human/deer hybrid and one of a growing number of hybrids in this strange new world. Nonso Anozie co-stars as Tommy Jepperd, a man who reluctantly becomes Gus’ protector.

Sweet Tooth season 2 is now out and finds Gus as a captive of the fanatical Last Men, who want to sacrifice him and the other hybrid kids in the name of curing the pandemic. Tommy is desperately trying to find and rescue Gus, but it may fall to Gus to save himself.

The Sandman

Neil Gaiman’s celebrated comic book series comes to life in this adaptation that casts Tom Sturridge as Morpheus, the lord of the world of dreams. When a cruel dabbler in the occult accidentally imprisons Morpheus, it begins a tale that unfolds across multiple generations and through myriad realms and ultimately puts the future of humanity at risk.

In development for more than two decades, The Sandman is a project long thought impossible to adapt faithfully, but the series somehow manages to weave together the enthralling stories and powerful themes of Gaiman’s acclaimed fantasy saga.

Genre: Fantasy Stars: Tom Sturridge, Boyd Holbrook, Jenna Coleman Seasons: 1

Stranger Things

One of the most popular original series on Netflix , Stranger Things has become a cultural touchstone in the short time since its 2016 debut. The series’ opening sequence lays out its sci-fi aspirations clearly: A scientist flees down an empty hallway, pursued by some unseen force that eventually nabs him as he waits for elevator doors to close; it then cuts to a group of kids playing D&D in a suburban basement.

The series is rooted in ‘80s genre nostalgia, from the mysterious creature terrorizing the fictional Indiana town to the secret government agency chasing the group of kids who encounter it. There are pieces of Stephen King, Steven Spielberg, and John Hughes strewn throughout Stranger Things , and the result is a show that will feel immediately familiar to people who grew up with that source material.

Genre: Sci-Fi Stars: Winona Ryder, David Harbour, Millie Bobby Brown Seasons: 4

True crime and Docuseries

Wrestlers

In the world of professional wrestling, very few start out on top. Netflix’s Wrestlers is a seven-episode docuseries that takes a behind-the-scenes look at Ohio Valley Wrestling, a small wrestling promotion that was once a developmental territory for the WWE that trained superstars like John Cena, Brock Lesnar, and Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ‘s Dave Bautista on their journey toward becoming some of the biggest names in sports entertainment.

Not everyone will achieve that kind of success. In fact, few do. And the physical toll of performing high-impact moves may not always be worth it for the men and women who dream of making it in WWE or AEW. Regardless, we wouldn’t be too shocked if someone from the cast of Wrestlers eventually reaches that goal. After all, no one ever made it in wrestling without reaching for the stars.

Genre: Documentary Stars: Al Snow Seasons: 1

Predators

There are several world-class nature documentaries on Netflix, and the latest addition to that genre, Predators , is all about some of the deadliest hunters in nature. Actor Tom Hardy narrates the series, and naturally, three of the episodes focus on the big cats: cheetahs, lions, and pumas. The remaining two episodes focus on polar bears and wild dogs.

This miniseries offers a rare opportunity to watch these wild creatures facing real challenges to their survival beyond hunting down their next meal. Unfortunately for these magnificent creatures, climate change and natural disasters may prove to be even deadlier than they are.

Genre: Documentary Stars: Tom Hardy Seasons: 1

Depp v. Heard

Everyone loves a storybook romance … but they love a scandal more. Nothing illustrates this more than the fact that Depp v. Heard raced up the charts to become Netflix’s most-watched TV show for this week. This limited series takes a look back at the extremely tumultuous relationship between Johnny Depp and Amber Heard. It wasn’t that long ago when they were Hollywood’s “It” couple. Now, they’re continuously at each other’s throats.

This docuseries primarily focuses on the defamation trial that played out in open court in 2022. Did Depp really plan to get revenge on his ex-wife? And did Heard leave a very unpleasant surprise in Depp’s bed? Some things only the ex-couple themselves will ever know for sure. But if you’re looking for something salacious to watch, then you’ve found it.

Genre: Docuseries Stars: Johnny Depp, Amber Heard Seasons: 1

Quarterback

In the NFL, the quarterbacks are essentially the rock stars of the league. Netflix’s new sports docuseries, Quarterback , puts the spotlight on three players at that position: Kansas City Chiefs quarterback and ESPY award winner Patrick Mahomes, Minnesota Vikings quarterback Kirk Cousins, and Atlanta Falcons quarterback Marcus Mariota.

Mahomes just so happens to be one of the best quarterbacks in the game, and he won his second Super Bowl during the production of this show. But for Cousins and Mariota, they have to fight to maintain their place in the NFL. Both men have been in the NFL for years, and their window to win it all is rapidly dwindling.

Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators

“Gladiators, ready!” While attempts to reboot and revive American Gladiators have stalled, Netflix’s new documentary, Muscles & Mayhem: An Unauthorized Story of American Gladiators , offers a glimpse at the game show sensation that ran for seven seasons from 1989 to 1996. The way the game worked was by recruiting two men and two women to compete against each other in over-the-top obstacles and challenges while the titular Gladiators attempted to impede their progress.

It was a massive hit, but as seen in this five-episode series, the Gladiators faced a number of challenges behind the scenes. This show is a fascinating look at some of the American Gladiators stories that have gone untold until now.

Catching Killers

Netflix never seems to have any shortage of true crime documentaries . In the new season of Catching Killers , each episode puts the spotlight on four infamous serial killers as well as the law enforcement officials who moved heaven and Earth to find them. There are only four episodes in this season, but the cases are huge. The Railroad Killer, the Zodiac Killer, the DC sniper, and the Olympic bomber each get the spotlight. And once again, these are unforgettable snapshots of humanity at its worst. But they are also stories of resilience as well.

Our Planet II

After a four-year hiatus, Our Planet is back for another season on Netflix, and it remains one of the most stunningly beautiful nature documentaries on the streamer. David Attenborough returns as the narrator of Our Planet II , which once again explores the impact that climate change has had on the environment and the creatures that live all over the world.

One of the major themes of this season is migration, as animals struggle to find new places to survive and thrive as they deal with both predators and pollution. As in the first season, the visuals are breathtaking and this is a unique look at the world that most people have never seen in person.

Genre: Documentary Stars: David Attenborough Seasons: 2

Animation

Skull Island

King Kong is getting his own adult-themed animated series, but he’s not the only star of Skull Island . Instead, the focus shifts to Annie (Mae Whitman), a teenager who has apparently lived on Skull Island for years. Annie soon befriends a pair of shipwrecked teens, Charlie (Nicolas Cantu) and Mike (Darren Barnet). Meanwhile, Charlie’s father, Cap (Benjamin Bratt), has also washed up on the island and encountered Irene ( Mrs. Davis ‘ Betty Gilpin ), a woman who is in pursuit of Annie.

The parallel stories of the survivors eventually converge, as Kong himself comes to the forefront. But getting to Skull Island is the easy part. Surviving is the true challenge.

Genre: Sci-fi, Action, Animated Stars: Nicolas Cantu, Mae Whitman, Darren Barnet, Benjamin Bratt, Betty Gilpin Seasons: 1

Cyberpunk: Edgerunners

This edgy, high-octane anime series is inspired by the Cyberpunk 2077 video game , but you don’t need to know anything about its source material to appreciate the brutal, bonkers adventure it offers. The series follows a young street kid in the neon- and chrome-filled Night City who falls in with a crew of mercenaries and soon finds himself struggling to hold on to his humanity in a world obsessed with cybernetic augmentation.

Genre: Animation Stars: n/a Seasons: 1

Arcane

You don’t need to know anything about the League of Legends game franchise to enjoy this critically-acclaimed adult animated series set in a steampunk world where magic and technology shape the simmering relationship between a utopian metropolis and the oppressed city in its shadow.

Full of gorgeous animation and compelling characters, Arcane follows a pair of sisters whose tragic childhood puts them on opposite sides of the war to come, set against a stirring, powerful score. Once you dive into the first season, it’s difficult not to see it through to the end in one shot — which is probably why Netflix green-lit a second season premiering sometime in 2023.

For more info on the next season, please read everything we know so far about Arcane season 2 .

Lions at Packers game picks, best bets, plus Taylor Swift expected to attend Chiefs-Jets on Sunday night

September 28, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Welcome to the Thursday edition of the Pick Six newsletter!

If you love cats and cheese, then tonight is your night because the Lions and Packers will be facing each other on “Thursday Night Football.” Although Matt LaFleur has done a pretty solid job during his time in Green Bay, he’s never won a Thursday night home game (0-2), so he’ll be looking to get that monkey off his back.

The Lions are currently a 2-point favorite for tonight’s game. If the Lions close as the favorite, it will mark just the THIRD time since 1992 that Detroit has been favored to win at Lambeau.

As usual, we’ll be previewing tonight’s game with some picks and best bets plus, we’ll have the latest on Taylor Swift, who apparently has some big plans for this weekend. As far as Taylor goes, look, this is still an NFL newsletter right now, but I’m not going to make any promises going forward. There’s a 40% chance that this could be a Taylor Swift newsletter by the end of next week.

As always, here’s your daily reminder to tell all your friends to sign up for the newsletter. It’s the perfect gift to get for your favorite football-loving friend at the start of the season. To get them signed up, all you have to do is click here .

1. Today’s show: Two former NFL players break down the latest news

For today’s episode of the Pick Six Podcast, we brought on two former NFL players to break down all of the latest NFL news: Brady Quinn and Leger Douzable .

During Thursday’s show, they covered a multitude of topics, including what the Jets should do at quarterback. Quinn used to play quarterback in the NFL and Douzable used to play for the Jets, so you’re not going to get a much better perspective on the drama in New York than you will with these guys.

According to at least one report, the Jets defense is getting frustrated at the fact that Robert Saleh keeps defending Zach Wilson . Douzable said the defensive players on the team have a right to be frustrated because of how well they’re playing.

“When you go up there and give up 15 points and lose the game, it’s very frustrating,” Douzable said. The Jets loss to the Patriots 15-10 in Week 3 in a game where the offense did almost nothing.

Quinn thinks Wilson has lost his confidence and that it will be difficult for him to get that back.

“He doesn’t have confidence in throwing the football,” Quinn said. “Once you lose your confidence in the NFL, it’s hard to get it back, especially in a big market like New York and it’s hard to do what your job requires and that’s to make confident decisive decisions in three to three-and-a-half seconds.”

Although the defensive side of the ball is frustrated, Quinn said Saleh is doing the right thing by showing support for Wilson. Quinn pointed out that if any other player was struggling, they would want their head coach to support them and not throw them under the bus.

“I would think every player in the locker room would hope their head coach would support him like Robert Saleh has,” Quinn said.

If you want to hear everything Quinn and Douzable had to say about the Jets QB situation, then be sure to click here so you can listen to today’s episode. The two also broke down the three undefeated teams, plus they made some predictions for tonight’s game between the Lions and Packers. You can also watch today’s episode on YouTube by clicking here .

2. Thursday night preview: Prepping you for Lions at Packers

With the Bears and Vikings both sitting at 0-3, it’s starting to look like the battle for the NFC North is going to be a two-horse race this year between the Packers and Lions. For that reason alone, this is a huge game tonight.

My good buddy Jared Dubin put together CBS Sports’ deep-dive preview for this game, and here’s how he sees the things playing out:

  • Why the Lions can win: The Lions offense could go off in this game. Although the Packers defense has looked solid through three weeks, you could easily attribute that to the fact that Green Bay has faced Justin Fields , Desmond Ridder and a combo of Derek Carr and Jameis Winston . Not only will Jared Goff be the best QB they’ve faced so far, but he also has a lot of weapons. The Packers are going to have trouble covering Amon-Ra St. Brown in the slot and if they use too many resources trying to stop him, that should open up things for rookie tight end Sam LaPorta . If the Lions offensive line can protect Goff, he could put up some big numbers.
  • Why the Packers can win: This seems simple, but if Jordan Love can get off to a hot start, that will go a long way toward helping the Packers win. The problem is that he hasn’t been able to do that just yet. Through the first three weeks, Love has completed just 47.8% of his passes in the first half (21 of 44). Due to those struggles, the Packers are averaging just 6.7 points in the first half of each game this season. The Packers will also need a huge performance from their defense, because if this game turns into a shootout, that’s not going to be a good thing for Green Bay.

You can get a full preview of the game from Dubin by clicking here .

If you’re thinking about betting on the game, Tyler Sullivan put together a full gambling preview.

  • ONE PROP Tyler LIKES: Sam LaPorta OVER 42.5 receiving yards (-133): “This is a popular play as LaPorta has started to emerge as a top pass-catching option for Goff. The rookie is coming off of his best game of the season where he hauled in eight passes for 84 yards. He’s gone over this number in his previous two games and his role within the offense only seems to be going up.”
  • ONE PROP I LIKE: Riley Patterson OVER 6.5 points (-110): If you read this newsletter regularly, then you know I only hand out kicker props, and right now, the primetime kicker prop is on the verge of putting my 3-year-old through college. Through three weeks, the kicking prop is 7-0, which means we’re going for eight straight tonight and we’re doing it with Riley Patterson. Patterson has gone over this number in each of the past two weeks and if you combine that with the fact that I think the Lions will be able to move the ball on Green Bay’s defense, he should be able to hit the over here.

You can check out Sullivan’s full gambling preview by clicking here . Finally, if you’re wondering who we’re picking, here’s who we have tonight:

Dubin’s pick: Lions 24-20 over Packers Sullivan’s pick: Packers 23-21 over Lions My pick: Lions 24-17 over Packers

Over on our CBS Sports picks page, the majority of us are picking the Packers with five of our eight experts expecting Green Bay to pull off the upset. You can see our picks for this game, along with all of our Week 4 picks, here .

3. Hot seat rankings after Week 3: NFL coaches who could soon be out of a job

It’s not easy to be on the hot seat after just three games, but several NFL coaches have managed to pull that off this year. With the start of Week 4 kicking off tonight, we thought now would be the perfect time to take a look at who’s sitting in the hottest seat.

With that in mind, Jeff Kerr unveiled his first hot seat rankings of the season and we’re going to look at the five coaches who made his list.

  • 1. Matt Eberflus (0-3 Bears)
  • 2. Brandon Staley (1-2 Chargers )
  • 3. Josh McDaniels (1-2 Raiders )
  • 4. Sean Payton (0-3 Broncos )
  • 5. Ron Rivera (2-1 Commanders )

If you want to know why each of these coaches made the list, you can read Jeff’s full story by clicking here . The most interesting part of these hot seat rankings is that someone’s seat is likely going to catch on fire this week. The 0-3 Bears will be playing the 0-3 Broncos and the losing coach in that game is going to have a seat that’s so hot, he might not want to ever sit down again.

4. 2024 NFL mock draft: Cardinals and Bears could end up with the top four picks

The 2024 NFL Draft is still seven months away, but we’re going to take a look at a mock draft today and that’s mainly because we could see something wild next April. At the rate things are going, there’s a good chance that the Cardinals and Bears could end up holding the top-four picks in the draft.

The Cardinals will have their own pick plus Houston’s 2024 first-round pick while the Bears will have their own pick, plus Carolina’s 2024 first-round pick. With that in mind, let’s check out the top-four picks on Josh Edwards’ mock draft.

(Note: The draft order below was determined using Caesars Sportsbook’s Super Bowl odds, but in reverse order).

  • 1. Cardinals (via Texans ): QB Caleb Williams (USC). “Kyler Murray should make his return to the field in the coming weeks and that will inform us on Arizona’s decision should they get the No. 1 overall selection. He has a lot to prove for the Cardinals not to take Williams with the first overall selection.”
  • 2. Cardinals: WR Marvin Harrison Jr. (Ohio State). “Arizona gives Caleb Williams a tall boundary option in the form of Harrison Jr. to go along with quicker athletes like Hollywood Brown and Rondale Moore .”
  • 3. Bears: QB Drake Maye (North Carolina). “Justin Fields’ confidence has been shaken and there is a clear disconnect between he and the coaching staff. They opt to go in another direction.”
  • 4. Bears (via Panthers ): OL Olumuyiwa Fashanu (Penn State). “Fashanu gives Chicago more scheme versatility at the left tackle position. The offensive line has been an issue for years so the emphasis on improving the starting five continues.”

The Bears are one of the worst teams in the NFL this year, but the light at the end of the tunnel for Bears fans is that their team could very well end up with two of the top four picks. As for Cardinals fans, Jonathan Gannon already has the team going in the right direction and getting two top-four picks would be huge for his young team.

If you want to check out Josh’s full mock draft, which includes four quarterbacks being selected in the first round, then be sure to click here .

5. Your daily Taylor Swift update

I don’t want to let down all the Swifties who signed up for the newsletter this week, so yes, we’re going to talk about Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce today.

So what’s the latest on this duo? Here’s what’s happened over the past 24 hours.

  • Taylor is expected to attend Chiefs-Jets game on Sunday. After attending one Chiefs ‘ game, it seems that Taylor Swift is now addicted to football. According to Front Office Sports , Taylor will be in attendance on Sunday at MetLife Stadium when the Chiefs play the Jets. If she’s still a football fan after watching the Jets offense play for four quarters, then I think her fling with Travis might last. You can read more details about Taylor’s Sunday plans here .
  • Patrick Mahomes confirms he met Taylor at the Week 3 afterparty. By now, you’ve probably heard that Kelce and Swift rented out a restaurant after the Chiefs beat the Bears on Sunday. Apparently, that’s where Mahomes got to meet Taylor for the first time . “Yea I met her. She’s really cool. Good people,” Mahomes said, via KSHB 41 in Kansas City . “But like Trav said, imma let them have their privacy and just keep it moving.”
  • Taylor and Travis seemed to snuggle up at the party. I don’t think we’ve ever used the word ‘snuggle’ in the newsletter, but we’re doing it today. Someone sent TMZ a photo of the pair that was taken at Sunday’s postgame party and they definitely look cozy (You can see the photo here ).
  • Travis probably won’t have much more to say about the relationship. The Chiefs tight end does a weekly podcast with his brother, and during this week’s episode, he did share some information about how things went with Swift after Kansas City’s Week 3 games (You can read those details here ). However, it doesn’t sound like Travis is going to be sharing very much going forward “I sure as hell enjoyed this weekend,” Travis said. “So everything moving forward, I think talking about sports and saying ‘alright now’ will have to be kind of where I keep it.”
  • How did Travis and Taylor even get together? If you’ve been wondering the answer to this question, I have some good news: We have the answer. Shanna McCarriston took a look at how all of this started and it goes all the way back to June, when Travis decided to shoot his shot. For a look at the timeline, be sure to click here .

So will you be getting Taylor Swift updates every day? I have no idea, but I’m not going to rule it out.

6. Extra points: Rams hoping Cooper Kupp can return in Week 5

It’s been a busy 24 hours in the NFL, and since it’s nearly impossible to keep track of everything that happened, I went ahead and put together a roundup for you.

  • Rams circling Week 5 for Cooper Kupp return. The Rams receiver started the season on IR, which means he has to miss the first four games. The Rams’ fourth game is this week, which means Kupp can return next week when the Rams host the Eagles . According to coach Sean McVay, the team is ramping up his workload in hopes that he’ll be able to play against Philadelphia.
  • Jaguars banged up heading to London. The Jaguars could be down two starters this week. Linebacker Devin Floyd is expected to miss Sunday’s game against Atlanta after having thumb surgery this week . The Jags could also be missing Zay Jones , who is dealing with a knee issue.
  • Steelers just signed a player who’s been out of the NFL for more than six years . In one of the most interesting signings of the week, the Steelers have added former punter Brad Wing to their practice squad . This is mostly interesting because Wing hasn’t played in the NFL since 2017. The 32-year-old has four NFL seasons under his belt, including one that came in Pittsburgh in 2014.
  • Cowboys sign former first-round pick . The Cowboys added some depth to their offensive line this week by signing Billy Price to their practice squad . The former first-round pick, who was taken 21st overall by the Bengals in 2018, has started a total of 45 games in his career. The Cowboys are dealing with some serious injury issues on their offensive line with three starters all banged up ( Tyler Biadasz , Zack Martin , Tyron Smith ).
  • XFL and USFL announce intent to merge. We are officially down to one spring football league. There had been reports earlier this month that the XFL and USFL were considering a merger and those reports turned out to be true. The two leagues officially announced their intent to merge on Thursday. It’s not clear what the merge league will be called or when it will kickoff, but those details will likely be announced at some point in the near future.

NFL Week 4 Best Bets: Bills quiet Dolphins hype, Packers upend Lions, Buccaneers beat down Saints

September 28, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Getty Images

Previously in this space, we’ve highlighted Taylor Swift and her many wonderful songs. Unfortunately, it appears Ms. Swift has become popular. Who knew?? No doubt her success is strictly a result of my most recent best bets column — and the wins have been reciprocal, as we’re in the black for the year through three weeks after a 3-2 effort in Week 3.

We want to keep it that way, so it’s probably best to stick with the musical theme right? Maybe we can pair up Travis’ brother and podcast co-host, Jason Kelce . It can’t be a Swift-like match , however, because as anyone who listens to the wildly entertaining ” New Heights ” pod knows, Jason is married.

So what about a super weird, localized band? And by super weird, of course, I mean Ween. Philly-formed, they’ve got songs like “Freedom of ’76” (featuring lyrics like “‘Mannequin’ was filmed at Woolworth’s” along with shoutouts to “Boyz II Men”). And unlike Taylor Swift, they won’t betray Philly and suddenly become Chiefs fans .

They’re so Philly that they’ve announced a show a year in advance in the City of Brotherly Love where, allegedly, they’ll be playing “Chocolate and Cheese” in its entirety. See you there, and maybe Jason will join us.

Speaking of Philly, I have the Eagles remaining undefeated and covering the 8-point spread against the Commanders this week. You can check out all of my picks at SportsLine (first month for $1 by using promo code PICK) and can see my full Week 4 picks here . And of course, check out our Pick Six NFL Week 4 NFL picks podcast live at 2 p.m. ET on our YouTube page , or listen anytime wherever you get your podcasts.

Now onto the football picks. Let’s stay hot!

Packers (+1.5) vs Lions

Jordan Love’s been pretty good the first three weeks of the season. This Cindy story might end up in a pretzel, but it probably won’t happen at home on a short week with Christian Watson and Aaron Jones coming back. The bigger issues for this particular game are David Bakhtiari and De’Vondre Campbell ; if the Packers can’t protect or stop the run, it’s a problem against Detroit. But I’m not completely confident Jared Goff will be elite in this spot, especially when there’s a bad matchup in the secondary for the Lions. If Detroit runs the ball well, the Lions will win. If they don’t, the Packers are suddenly a spicy NFC title contender.

Bills (-2.5) vs Dolphins

Everyone and their brother is dying to bet Miami, and they can’t understand why the Dolphins aren’t favored after dropping 70 on the Broncos last week. It’s a fair question, but it clearly ignores how good Buffalo remains. The Bills are good. Josh Allen is good. The Dolphins are really, really good and Mike McDaniel might be the best coach in the NFL *right now.* Having said all that, Sean McDermott is in his bag defensively at the moment and Allen took the Week 1 Jets lesson to heart. If Vic Fangio flips him for real , then you tip your cap. But everyone is going to back the Dolphins here and be shocked when the Bills are the better team. Well, not everyone.

Chiefs (-9.5) at Jets

Acting like there are “layers” to this is pretty crazy, but sometimes you do get a “Taylor Swift has to show up in New York” game with Travis Kelce and Patrick Mahomes looking to show off a touch plus Andy Reid determined to keep the score low. Everyone focused on Swiftie stuff, but the real masterminds remembered Mahomes getting hurt and dealing with an ankle injury. The under is a slammer here because of Reid’s turf knowledge. The Chiefs defense has been great and they won’t give up more than 10 points. If you think Kansas City can’t score 21, go ahead and fade them.

Panthers (+3.5) vs. Vikings

You shouldn’t bet this game, but my parents are going to be in Charlotte for this matchup. And I’ll be damned if I won’t fade Kirk Cousins — even at 1 p.m. — in the interest of hoping my family can see some good football. Also … the Vikings defense isn’t good, they won’t pressure Carolina as much as people expect, and the Panthers offensive line will/should be motivated by the eight (EIGHT!) false starts from last week. This is a quietly desperate Panthers team — even if the Vikings are better, they’ll find a way to let Carolina stay within a field goal.

Buccaneers (+3.5) vs. Saints

The Bucs got hammered by the Eagles on Monday night in ugly weather, but the Saints took a worse loss Sunday, coughing up a huge lead to the Packers while simultaneously losing Derek Carr for an undetermined period of time with a sprain of his AC joint. Carr is “week to week” with the injury and I don’t expect him to play, which makes this a revenge game for Jameis Winston ! Or the Buccaneers, depending on how you look at it? Tampa’s defense is capable of preying on mistake-prone quarterbacks and buddy is Jameis mistake prone. Baker Mayfield will have more time against New Orleans, he’s indoors, and the Bucs will keep this within a field goal.

I’m a booze expert & tested best value boxed wines… two top supermarket choices give you THREE times as much as a bottle

September 28, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

NO longer considered a byword for sub-par plonk, wine in a box has come on leaps and bounds in recent years.

Improvements to bag-in-container technology, which keeps oxygen out to ensure freshness and longevity, mean many vino producers will now package better grapes in this way.

And improved quality and sustainability – combined with good-value price tags – mean today’s quaffers are keener, too.

Add in portability, convenience and the fact that most square tipples keep fresh in the fridge for up to a month if stored upright, and these bargain boxes can offer unbeatable booze bang for your buck.

This month Aldi launched a brand new boxed Merlot containing the equivalent of three bottles’ worth of red wine for just £12.49.

Here drinks expert Helena Nicklin gives us her verdict on a range of supermarket bargain Chateau Cardboard red, white and pink top picks.

This sultry supermarket Italian Soave from the north east of the country won’t win any pretty packaging prices for its rather basic boxed exterior, but don’t let that put you off.

The wine inside is a winner. Dry and yeasty with a salted almond tang and a pinch of pear, it is a great all-rounder white that’s made well.

It fits easily in the fridge for a glass on tap anytime, stays fresh for ages and shows off excellent value for money.

Perfect for: Aperitifs with salty snacks.

PINK

La Vieille Ferme Rosé, Asda £19 (£6.33/75cL) 12.5% 1.5L

Score: 3/5

Almost water white, this pale, rose petal pink boxed French plonk from Asda looks and feels elegant in the glass and proves that boxed doesn’t have to mean unappealing packaging. Thankfully the drink delivers too, with an attractive, floral aroma and subtle, strawberry and raspberry flavours.

Well balanced, dry, crisp and clean, this is a very simple but delicious well-made glugger. Ideal for al fresco sipping in an Indian summer!

Perfect for: Carrying to a picnic.

Italian Blush, Tesco £15 (£5/75cL) 11.5%, 2.25L

Score: 2/5

Less blush and more flush, this boxed Italian rose tipple has a deeper, more orangey pink colour than anticipated in the glass, which potentially hints at a lack of freshness.

On the palate it’s drinkable, with a fairly generic ‘wine’ taste and sweetness that’s a bit disjointed.

Fine as a boxed stand-by to keep in the fridge and a good price, but there is better vino around.

Perfect for: A spritzer with ice and lemonade or as a Kir with blackcurrant cordial.

Asda Extra Special Pinot Grigio Rosé 2022 £17.95 (£5.98/75cL) 12% 2.25L

Score: 5/5

This box of great-value pink really surprised me – in a good way.

With its enticing ballet-shoe hue, this is an Italian wine that manages to strike the balance between crisp and dry with just the right amount of red fruit splashed in.

It has personality and substance but is light on its feet.

An excellent price for the three bottles’ worth you get too, and definitely a good mid-week, or anytime, plonk pleasure.

Perfect for: Cold cuts, with canapés or just enjoy alone in the glass!

RED

Baron Amarillo Merlot, Aldi £12.49 (£4.14/75cL) 12.5% 2.25L

Score: 3/5

This new, pocket-friendly Merlot from Aldi is pretty decent plonk for the super low price tag.

A rustic red packed with baked fig and strawberry flavours, with a sprinkle of baking spice, it has a fair bit going on and is not cloying or too acidic like many cheap wines can be.

Cheap, but for the three bottles’ worth of red you get for the money it is nicely cheerful.

Ideal to have in as we get ready to cosy up and the evenings start to shorten.

Don’t forget, even boxed red wine will stay fresher longer if refrigerated, too.

Perfect for: Midweek sausage and mash or burgers.

Jam Shed Shiraz, Tesco £14.50 (£7.25/75cL) 13.5% 1.5L

Score: 3/5

Big, bold, very ripe and juicy, jam is the word with this wine!

If you like sweeter styles of vino with a peppery, spicy kick, this big ol’ boy from South Australia will bowl you over.

It may get cloying after a few glasses but it does what it says on the tin – or rather, box.

Tone down the sweetness with a chunk of chocolate or some salty cheese and you’ll have the ultimate guilty pleasure pairing.

Fun stylish packaging to keep in the fridge, too.

Perfect for: Telly nights on the sofa with some chocolate.

Banrock Station, Shiraz Cabernet 2021, Sainsburys £19.50 (£6.50/75cL) 13.5% 2.25L

Score: 5/5

Here’s an awesome Aussie red with a serious purpose: Carbon neutral-certified Banrock Station plant 100,000 native trees and shrubs in Australia every year.

In the glass this Shiraz is dry and really delicious, with yummy coffee bean and dark chocolate flavours balanced by pretty, plummy fruit notes.
