How to choose a baby monitor

Whether you’re a first-time parent or not, caring for a baby comes with a lot of anxiety. Having the right baby monitor can at least help give you some peace of mind. Picking one is no easy feat, though, but you can start by narrowing down your choices depending on the features that will meet your needs.

Baby monitors come in many different types. Audio-only monitors minimize background noise and focus on the sound the baby makes, allowing you to listen while he or she sleeps, cries, or coos. Audio-video systems, on the other hand, give the benefit of letting you see your little one in real time through a built-in camera. Most models even come with a touchscreen display with pan scan features for zooming in or tilting the camera, as well as night vision technology so you view the feed clearly even in the dark.

Other types — analog and digital — pertain to security and the way signals travel between the monitor and the receiver. Analog monitors are less expensive but have weaker security, while digital ones encrypt the signal so others won’t hear what’s happening in your household when those signals travel. Wireless network or Wi-Fi baby monitors fall under the digital category and usually include both audio and video capabilities. They connect to your existing wireless network, allowing you to use your smartphone, tablet, or computer as a receiver. Functionalities include the ability to be controlled from an app through your mobile device (whenever and wherever you are), compatibility with voice assistant ecosystems, and storage of video footage via the cloud.

Prefer an audio-only or audio-video baby monitor system? Either way, it’s ideal that you choose a model with a two-way audio function. This enables you to not only hear your baby, but also to comfort, speak, or sing lullabies to him or her through the monitor. A light-up sound indicator feature will also come in handy, providing a visual indication of your little one’s noise level even if the handset volume is muted or low.

If you want to kick things up even further, there are baby monitors available with a whole bunch of amazing extras or add-ons. These include an adjustable temperature sensor that lets you identify and control the climate in your baby’s room, sensors that can filter out normal baby sounds and motions as well as track the baby’s vital signs, soft lights that can project starry night scenes onto the ceiling, and built-in lullabies that can help soothe your baby to sleep.

COVID-19: SAF defers all in-camp training, IPPT for NSmen until May 4; some servicemen to work from home

April 3, 2020 by www.channelnewsasia.com Leave a Comment

SINGAPORE: The Singapore Armed Forces (SAF) will defer all in-camp training (ICT) and individual physical proficiency tests (IPPT) for operationally-ready national servicemen (NSmen) with immediate effect until May 4.

“The SAF will implement additional measures to maintain our operational readiness to defend Singapore’s peace and security amidst the evolving COVID-19 outbreak,” the Ministry of Defence (MINDEF) said in a statement on Friday (Apr 3).

Servicemen in administrative roles will also work from home “where feasible”.

This comes as the Government announced sweeping new measures to curb the outbreak amid a rising number of local and unlinked cases. Measures include closing schools and most workplaces, as well as disallowing dining in at food establishments .

In his address to the nation on Friday, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong urged people to stay at home “as much as possible”.

MINDEF had on Tuesday announced that it will defer all “non-operations-essential” in-camp training and waive IPPT requirements for affected NSmen until Apr 30.

“Other SAF units, including training schools such as Officer Cadet School, Specialist Cadet School, and Basic Military Training Centre (BMTC), will continue operating and training with enhanced measures,” it said on Friday.

As part of the measures, BMTC will upload lessons online, ensure safe distancing at all times and conduct training in smaller groups, a practice known as cohorting.

MINDEF said servicemen performing critical functions, such as island defence, protection of key installations, maritime security, air defence and counter-terrorism operations, will continue to be cohorted.

“In addition, they will be required to reside in their camps and bases before and during their operational duty to reduce the risk of infection in the critical operational units,” it stated.

“The SAF will continue to monitor the evolving situation and review our measures to safeguard the defence of Singapore while keeping our servicemen safe.”

Christian Bale & Director Scott Cooper Re-Team On Cross Creek’s ‘The Pale Blue Eye’ – EFM

February 26, 2021 by deadline.com Leave a Comment

EXCLUSIVE : Christian Bale and director Scott Cooper are set to make their third film together. Bale will star in Cooper’s scripted adaptation of the Louis Bayard novel The Pale Blue Eye . Cross Creek, coming off the Golden Globe-nominated The Trial of the Chicago 7 , is financing and producing. CAA Media Finance and Endeavor Content are co-repping domestic distribution rights at the European Film Market, with MadRiver handling international sales.

Thriller revolves around the attempt to solve a series of murders that took place in 1830 at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point. Bale will play a veteran detective who investigates the murders, helped by a detail-oriented young cadet who will later become a world famous author, Edgar Allan Poe .

“Even though Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston and died, delirious, in Baltimore, the majority of his life was spent in Virginia, my home state,” Cooper told Deadline. “So I grew up with his presence. He bequeathed us the detective genre, and he’s still such a presence in our culture, with every horror, mystery and science fiction writer indebted to Poe. This is my attempt at a large-canvas whodunit, with a serial killer at its center. I want to make films that push me into a different, maybe uncomfortable space, but I am glad to have Christian go there with me. I’ve wanted to make this for over a decade and fortunately for me, Christian has perfectly aged into the lead character. He was far too young when I first thought of making this. Films are meant to happen at the right time. Christian is always in high demand, but to be able to make this with him will be such a joy for me.”

Bale will produce with Cooper, John Lesher and Cross Creek’s Tyler Thompson. The plan is to shoot in the fall.

Cooper and Bale will be doing their third film together, after teaming on Out of the Furnace and Hostiles . Cooper most recently wrapped the Guillermo del Toro-produced horror film Antlers for Fox Searchlight, slated for fall release, and Bale, last seen in Ford v Ferrari , is filming Thor: Love and Thunder , and the untitled David O Russell film.

Cross Creek set the film as part of its multi-pic development deal with Streamline Global’s Chris Sharp, Emily Salveson and Ryan Smith.
