Mobile retailers call for Amazon probe, cap on online smartphone sales

Mobile retailers call for Amazon probe, cap on online smartphone sales An Indian trade group representing 150,000 mobile phone stores on Monday urged Prime Minister Narendra Modi to investigate Amazon ‘s business practices in the country and impose a daily cap on a single seller’s online smartphone sales.

In a letter sent to Modi, the group cited a Reuters special report published last month that revealed Amazon has for years given preferential treatment to a small group of sellers on its Indian platform, using them to circumvent the country’s strict foreign investment regulations.

The report was based on internal Amazon documents dated between 2012 and 2019. To read the special report click

“We were already aware of Amazon’s thought process and strategy,” the All India Mobile Retailers Association (AIMRA) wrote in the letter. The documents, the letter said, “have revealed that Amazon is doing business in India with the strategy of deftly dodging the regulators and politicians”.

AIMRA urged the government to “suspend all Amazon activities in India” until there is an investigation into the company’s practices.

Amazon says it doesn’t give preferential treatment to any seller on its marketplace and has always complied with Indian law.

Amazon and Modi’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Monday.

Indian retailers, a crucial part of Modi’s support base, have long alleged that Amazon and Walmart’s Flipkart flout federal regulations and that their business practices hurt small traders. The companies, which run the two biggest e-commerce platforms in India, deny the allegations.

The Amazon documents reviewed by Reuters showed the company helped a small number of sellers prosper on its website, discounted their fees and helped one cut special deals with big tech manufacturers such as Apple Inc.

Some 35 of Amazon’s more than 400,000 sellers in India in early 2019 accounted for around two-thirds of its online sales , the documents also showed.

AIMRA said in its letter the government should cap a single seller’s daily smartphone sales on Amazon and Flipkart at Rs 500,000 ($6,829).

The group also alleges the U.S. firms promoted sales on their platforms through preferred sellers, asking the government to investigate tie-ups between smartphone brands and these sellers.

Flipkart did not respond to a request for comment. In the special report published last month, Amazon said in a statement that it was helping small businesses in India and that it “treats all sellers in a fair, transparent, and non-discriminatory manner”.

Brick-and-mortar retailers have said they’re struggling to compete with the tech giants as online smartphone sales boom. By 2019, 44% of smartphones in India were being sold online, with Amazon and Flipkart dominating the sales, according to Forrester Research.

US envoy Khalilzad meets Afghan Taliban for the first time since President Biden took office

  • Afghan Taliban spokesman says Zalmay Khalilzad and top US general in Afghanistan met with group’s negotiating team in Doha late Friday.
  • Meeting came after Zalmay Khalilzad met Afghan leaders in Kabul earlier this week
  • This is Zalmay Khalilzad’s first public visit to Qatar since US President Joe Biden took office.

DOHA:  US envoy Zalmay Khalilzad met the Afghan Taliban in Doha for the first time since President Joe Biden took office as Washington looks to revive the stalled peace process.

The envoy, Zalmay Khalilzad, held talks earlier this week with Afghan leaders in Kabul, including President Ashraf Ghani and Abdullah Abdullah, chair of Afghanistan’s High Council for National Reconciliation which oversees the government’s talks with the Taliban in Qatar.

Taliban spokesman Muhamad Naeem tweeted that Khalilzad and the top US general in Afghanistan met with the Taliban’s negotiating team in Doha, including Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar, late Friday.

“Both sides expressed their commitment to the Doha agreement and discussed its full implementation. Likewise, the current situation of Afghanistan and the rapidity and effectiveness of the Intra-Afghan negotiations were discussed,” he wrote.

Speculation is rife over America’s future in Afghanistan, after the White House announced plans to review a withdrawal deal brokered by Khalilzad and the Taliban in Doha last year.

Under that agreement, the US is set to withdraw from Afghanistan in May, but a surge in fighting has sparked concerns that a speedy exit may unleash greater chaos as peace talks between the Kabul government and Taliban continue to stall.

The accord states that the US will withdraw all troops from Afghanistan, with the Taliban promising not to allow territory to be used by terrorists — the original goal of the US invasion following the September 11, 2001 attacks.

Khalilzad’s visit marks the first time he has publicly returned to Qatar since US President Joe Biden took office in January and asked him to stay on in his post.

French tourist reports sale of Nazi merchandise in Pattaya

June 11, 2018 by thethaiger.com Leave a Comment

A French tourist has raised concerns about the sale of Nazi paraphernalia in Pattaya.

PattayaOne.news reports that 34 year old Alexandre Jandaeng spoke of his shock at seeing the goods, which included pictures of Adolf Hitler, swastika emblazoned scarves and coins, on sale at a market in the popular resort town. Mr Jandaeng reported the sale of the goods to Pattaya Tourist Police, telling them that if such things were on sale in his native France, the person selling them could face up to 10 years in jail.

A video posted by Manager showed Mr Jandaeng at the police station showing pictures of the goods to an officer. In the video, the Frenchman explained how he did not like to see such things and that Nazi related goods should not be allowed to be sold in Thailand or anywhere else.

“For me, it is very very important the police stop this”, Mr Jandaeng said in the video.

“It is important to remember history”, he said.

“Many people died for that and for me it is impossible to see this and is very shocking. I don’t like,” he added.

Mr Jandaeng praised the tourist police officer for listening to his complaint but admitted that he does not know if any action will be taken against the vendor who was selling the Nazi goods.

This isn’t the first time Nazi imagery or so called “Hitler-chic” has been seen in Thailand. As well as being found on sale in some of Thailand’s most popular night markets, Nazi imagery has even been featured some of the countries leading educational institutions and in government videos.

In 2011 a Catholic school in Thailand was forced to apologise after it made students wear Nazi uniform for a sports day parade. Some students also had swastikas painted on their faces.

BEIJING, March 6 (Xinhua) — The tear-jerker film “Hi, Mom” on Saturday overtook the 2019 animated fantasy “Ne Zha” to become the second highest-grossing film ever screened in China.

The maiden directorial project of comedian and actress Jia Ling saw its cumulative ticket sales reach 5.04 billion yuan (776 million U.S. dollars) as of Saturday evening.

The 2017 action-adventure film “Wolf Warrior 2” is currently topping the all-time box office chart covering all films ever screened in China with a total revenue of 5.69 billion yuan, according to data compiled by the China Movie Data Information Network.

“Hi, Mom” hit theaters on the Spring Festival on Feb. 12, and led China’s 2021 box office chart.

The comedy stars Jia as a devoted daughter who, deeply saddened by her mother’s accidental death, finds herself transported back to 1981, where she meets her mother and attempts to improve her fate using ideas from the future.

It received the highest rating among all the seven Spring Festival films. Box office tracker Maoyan projected it would complete its run with total sales of 5.3 billion yuan. Enditem
