On Saturday morning, Switzer first asked for prayers, saying that he and his wife Gabie’s 9-month-old son Christian woke up in his own blood and was positive for COVID-19.

Christian is finally out of surgery. The GI specialist found several sites of bleeding. He took samples that were sent off to biopsy to see what could be causing it, I guess. He’s stable right now and resting. pic.twitter.com/56vMmRkJVS

GRAIN SURGERY 1.0

April 1, 2002 by www.macworld.com Leave a Comment

Grain Surgery, Visual Infinity’s new plug-in for Adobe Photoshop 5.5 and later, is a powerful and easy-to-use noise-manipulation program that lets you remove noise from an image, add noise to an image, and copy one image’s noise to another.

What’s All This Noise about Noise?

Experienced designers typically employ blur or despeckle filters to reduce noise from digital cameras or grain from scanned images. Although these tools can be effective, they also have a tendency to eliminate important image detail.

Grain Surgery takes a more intelligent approach to noise removal. To understand present noise, the program checks areas of your image that contain simple, flat colors. It then removes recognized noise patterns from the image.

The plug-in’s simple dialog box includes a large preview window with an easy-to-use slider control for specifying how much noise reduction to apply. You can also set the number of noise samples to use and where they should be taken from.

Grain Surgery’s results are impressive but not perfect. Though it does a very good job of removing noise, it also tends to soften fine image detail.

Got a Match?

You can use Grain Surgery’s Add Grain tool to add noise and grain to an image. In addition to controlling grain size, intensity, and saturation, you can select grain options that mimic specific kinds of film.

The plug-in’s Match Grain feature can analyze the grain in one image and then add it to another image to help you create more-believable composites.

Macworld’s Buying Advice

Grain Surgery will be a good addition to almost any editing arsenal. There are other techniques that may remove noise as well as Grain Surgery does, but the program’s adding and matching features make it worth its price.

‘I was down’: Federer had hard time before 2nd knee surgery

March 7, 2021 by www.thestar.com Leave a Comment

DOHA, Qatar – Roger Federer never seriously contemplated retirement while he was away from the tennis tour for more than a year. He did have a hard time dealing with the need for a repeat operation on his bad right knee, though.

“I was down. Obviously I couldn’t believe I had to do a second one,” Federer said Sunday ahead of his appearance at the Qatar Open. “This is definitely a moment where you maybe question a little bit more.”

The 39-year-old Federer’s first match since the 2020 Australian Open will come Wednesday in Doha against Dan Evans or Jeremy Chardy.

Federer’s first procedure on his right knee occurred in February 2020. That knee kept swelling up after bike rides or walks with his four children; he announced in June that he had had a second surgery.

The 20-time Grand Slam champion will monitor how this comeback goes over the next several months and then assess things.

“I know it’s more on the rare side for almost a 40-year-old to come back after almost a year being out. And I was surprised how long it took. But I took a decision quite early with the team that I wanted to take the time, no rush, to get back onto the tour,” he said. “Important is that I’m injury-free, pain-free, and I can actually enjoy myself out there on tour. So we’ll see how it goes now. I’m curious myself to find out.”

What seemed clear from Federer’s session with reporters on Sunday: Wimbledon is what matters the most to him at this point.

He has won a men’s-record eight titles at the All England Club and came oh-so-close to a ninth in the 2019 final there, holding two championship points before eventually losing to Novak Djokovic in a fifth-set tiebreaker.

Wimbledon was cancelled last year for the first time since 1945 because of the coronavirus pandemic.

It is scheduled to be played June 28 to July 11.

“I know I need to go back to training after here again,” said Federer, who pulled out of the Miami Open later this month. “So from this standpoint, it’s still a building up to being stronger, better, fitter, faster and all that stuff. I hope, then, by Wimbledon, I’m going to be 100%, and from then on, then the season really starts for me. Everything until then, it’s just ‘Let’s see how it goes.’”

He is curious what travel and tournament life will be like during a pandemic — “bubble life, quarantines all around, the whole mask situation” — and, most of all, how his repaired knee handles competition.

“That’s really the only concern I have: Is the knee going to hold up? As of now, I’m not sure,“ Federer said. “I did everything I possibly could.”

Browns’ Switzer said 9-month-old son stable after surgery

March 7, 2021 by www.thestar.com Leave a Comment

Cleveland Browns wide receiver Ryan Switzer said his 9-month-old son is stable after undergoing surgery to stop bleeding.

Switzer chronicled son Christian’s medical situation over the weekend on Twitter, prompting an outpouring of public support.

Switzer’s most recent post Sunday came after the operation was completed and he said his son is “resting.”

On Saturday, Switzer said his son had “woke up in his blood” and had tested positive for COVID-19. He said doctors were trying to determine the cause of the bleeding.

In his latest update, Switzer said a gastrointestinal specialist “found several sites of bleeding” and samples were sent for a biopsy.

The 26-year-old Switzer spent last season on Cleveland’s practice squad. He was drafted by Dallas in 2017 and spent two years with the Pittsburgh Steelers.

Switzer initially reached out to his Twitter followers asking for prayers for his son, who he said needed three blood transfusions on Saturday due to low hemoglobin levels.

Switzer said he and his wife, Gabie, were “overwhelmed by the amount of people who have reached out in support of Christian.“
