Vitamin B12 performs myriad functions in the body but some of the most important include making red blood cells and supporting a healthy nervous system. If you become deficient in B12, these processes become derailed and the symptoms can be wide-ranging. A case report details the way your face may betray low B12.

Writing in the BMJ , a doctor charted his possible symptoms.

The doc wrote: “There was a doctor who developed some neurological symptoms (intermittent numbness on the left side of the face, left hand or left knee) a few weeks after an episode of shingles affecting the left side of the body.

“He saw a specialist who decided to check his Serum B12 and Serum Folate levels.”

The results indicated that his B12 level was low and intrinsic factor antibodies were negative.

Intrinsic factor is a protein that combines with B12 in the stomach to absorb the vitamin.

However, the doc did not want to pursue the typical course of treatment for B12 deficiency owing to uncertainties around the principal cause of his symptoms.

It was recommended that the doctor start receiving intramuscular hydroxocobalamin injections.

“However, the doctor did not want to receive intramuscular injections for the rest of his life,” the doc wrote.

Hydroxocobalamin is one of the main treatments for B12 prescribed in the UK. It’s a shot of B12.

The doc was aware that many of his patients had low B12 levels which returned to normal without treatment.

It also seemed to him that his symptoms did not correspond to any of the B12 deficiency neurological syndromes.

In view of this he said that he did not want the hydroxocobalamin injections.

The doctor’s GP was very understanding and it was agreed not to treat, but to repeat the tests.

However, the doctor did agree to follow his wife’s advice to add a small amount of yeast extract on a slice of bread to his diet occasionally.

If you’re a vegetarian or vegan, or are looking for alternatives to meat and dairy products, yeast extract is a good source of B12.

The tests were repeated a few months after the original test. They showed the doc had normal B12 levels.

The doctor’s neurological symptoms have been investigated by another specialist who has not insisted on treatment for B12 (or Folate) deficiency.

“The symptoms have been improving despite no treatment for B12 deficiency or Folate deficiency,” the doc wrote at the time.

At the end of the article, the doc posed the question: “Are we overtreating patients with low B12 levels?”

According to the NHS , most people can be easily treated with injections or tablets to replace the missing vitamins.

“To ensure your treatment is working, you may need to have further blood tests.”

Malayalam Actor Vijay Babu Arrested In Sexual Assault Case, To Be Interrogated For 7 Days

June 27, 2022 by news.abplive.com Leave a Comment

New Delhi: Malayalam actor and producer Vijay Babu has been arrested in an alleged sexual assault case on Monday after the bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas had earlier directed the actor to surrender on Monday (June 27) at 9 AM in the June 22 ruling while granting the actor anticipatory bail.

The Kerala High Court had earlier granted the actor bail and asked him to surrender before the investigation officer on June 27 for interrogation. The actor has been reportedly granted station bail but will have to cooperate with the team investigating the case. The HC while granting bail ordered that if the police wanted to arrest him, he should be released on bail executing a Rs 5 lakh bond along with two sureties.

However, another registration of arrest is expected to follow based on the proceedings in the case for revealing the actress’ name on social media.

A debutant Malayalam actress whose first appearance on screen was with Vijay Babu registered a rape case in the last week of April accusing him of sexually assaulting her several times. In her complaint, she also said that Vijay has forced her to take drugs. Hours after the case was filed, Vijay revealed the name of the actress on social media and claimed that he was the real victim. The police then filed another case against the actor-producer for revealing the complainant’s name on social media.

As reported earlier by ABP Live, Babu fled the country fearing arrest after the police filed a case. He returned to Kochi only after the court granted him protection from arrest. But the court had earlier rejected bail plea in the second case for revealing the actress’ identity on social media.

June 27, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my Leave a Comment

KOTA KINABALU: Most of Sabah’s new Covid-19 cases are sporadic, says Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.

The minister in charge of pandemic matters in the state said out of the 123 new cases on Monday

(June 27), 81 cases were recorded in Kota Kinabalu.

“Out of these cases in Kota Kinabalu, over 85% are sporadic, which means the transmission rates are riskier in crowded areas,” he said.

Masidi urged the public to continue maintaining high preventive measures including practising ongoing standard operating precautions (SOP) to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

He said from the total new cases, 121 were under Category 1 and Category 2, while two were under Category 4.

Apart from Kota Kinabalu, the other districts with new cases reported are Penampang with 13 cases, Keningau (nine), Tuaran (nine), Kota Belud (three), Ranau (two), Tambunan (two), and one each in Papar, Tawau, Tenom and Tongod.

There were no new clusters reported on Monday.
