“The View” mocks Trump’s net worth: “Wait until Melania finds out”

September 27, 2023 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

Hosts of ABC ‘s The View mocked Donald Trump on Wednesday after a judge ruled that the former president inflated his net worth.

On Wednesday morning’s airing, hosts began the show by speaking about Trump and a judge’s ruling in New York that the former president overvalued his properties and inflated his net worth, with co-host Whoopi Goldberg saying, “For years, you know, I have mentioned that you-know-who was just playing at being a real estate tycoon.”

Fellow co-host Joy Behar chimed in, saying, “What a loser he is….Wait till Melania finds out he’s only worth 800 bucks,” alluding to Trump’s wife.

Judge Arthur Engoron ruled in favor of New York Attorney General’s Office on Wednesday, saying that Trump and the Trump Organization increased the value of his properties by more than $400 million . The ruling also found that Trump inflated his net worth in an effort to mislead insurers and banks.

“In defendants’ world: rent regulated apartments are worth the same as unregulated apartments; restricted land is worth the same as unrestricted land; restrictions can evaporate into thin air; a disclaimer by one party casting responsibility on another party exonerates the other party’s lies,” the judge’s ruling said. “That is a fantasy world, not the real world.”

In a statement to Politico, New York Attorney General Letitia James said: “Today, a judge ruled in our favor and found that Donald Trump and the Trump Organization engaged in years of financial fraud . We look forward to presenting the rest of our case at trial.”

Trump responded to the ruling in a series of posts on Truth Social, where he wrote, “I have a Deranged, Trump Hating Judge, who RAILROADED this FAKE CASE through a NYS Court at a speed never seen before, refusing to let it go to the Commercial Division, where it belongs, denying me everything, No Trial, No Jury. He made up this crazy ‘KILL TRUMP’ decision, assigning insanely low values to properties, despite overwhelming evidence.”

“This political hack judge, who values, Mar-a-Lago, the most spectacular parcel of real estate in Palm Beach, and perhaps all of Florida, at $18 million in order to reduce valuations on my financial statements, which are, in fact, lower than my actual net worth, must be stopped. I have had very unfair judges since entering politics, but nobody has been as unhinged as this guy. Mar-a-Lago is worth, perhaps, 100 times more than he values it,” Trump wrote in another post.

During Wednesday’s airing of The View , former Trump adviser Alyssa Farah Griffin said: “He inflated the value of Mar-a-Lago by 2,300 percent. That would be like saying my two-bedroom apartment is a multi-floor penthouse. An average person would be in jail for doing it.”

In response to Newsweek’s request for comment, a spokesperson for Trump said, “Who’s Joy Behar?”

Trump/Tucker Carlson Interview Racks Up Massive Views; Addresses Debate Skip, Indictments | The Daily Wire

August 24, 2023 by www.dailywire.com Leave a Comment

Former President Donald Trump skipped the Republican debate Wednesday night and sat down with Tucker Carlson for an extensive interview that garnered over 100 million views on X in a matter of hours.

Trump answered questions ranging from why he did not attend the debate to if he believes the U.S. is headed for a civil war — and was even asked by the former Fox News host if he’s worried about an assassination attempt. The interview, which was posted to X five minutes before the start of the Republican debate amassed over 100 million views before the end of the night, Newsweek reported . By Thursday morning, Carlson’s interview with Trump had reached over 180 million views.

While the social media platform’s way of counting views makes it difficult to truly understand how many people actively watched the interview, Trump’s sit-down with Carlson can be compared to the host’s interview with GOP candidate Vivek Ramaswamy, which has garnered 44 million views since being posted last week.

During the interview, the former president pointed to his large lead in the polls as the reason he skipped joining the other Republican candidates and opted for a one-on-one conversation with Carlson.

“I’m leading by [40] points,” Trump said. “But I’m gonna have all these people screaming at me, shouting questions at me. All of which I love answering. I love doing, but it doesn’t make sense to do ’em. So, I’ve taken a pass.”

When asked by Carlson if he’s concerned that the U.S. is heading toward violence or possibly a civil war, Trump said he wasn’t sure.

“I can say this, there’s a level of passion that I’ve never seen,” Trump said. “There’s a level of hatred that I’ve never seen, and there’s probably a bad combination.”

Trump addressed his pending legal cases, saying they are nonsense. He pointed to his one-time opponent Hillary Clinton and Democrat Stacey Abrams, saying they too challenged the outcomes of the elections they lost.

“But now, you know, every time you see [Clinton] on television, she’s saying like, well, she’s challenging the election. … So that would mean that she should be indicted, but that would mean also that Stacey Abrams in Georgia should be indicted ’cause she still thinks she won the election for governor,” Trump said.

Carlson also asked the former president, who is facing four felony indictments and is set to turn himself in again on Thursday, if he worries that his political enemies might try to assassinate him.

“Honestly, they’re savage animals. They are people that are sick, really sick,” Trump replied.

On Biden, Trump said he still has doubts about whether the president will continue his run for re-election. Trump also said Biden isn’t actually running the country – and that his family’s business dealings have “compromised” him.

Trump touted his record on foreign policy, saying he kept the U.S. out of a nuclear war with North Korea and hit Biden for the Ukraine-Russia War, as well as for allowing China to reportedly gain a foothold in Cuba, but Trump’s primary issue is still immigration.

“Number one is a border and taking hundreds of thousands of criminals that have been allowed into our country and getting them out and bringing them back to their country,” the former president said.

Tim Pearce contributed to this report.

Taylor Swift Vs. Calvin Harris: The $233 Million Break Up

To many onlookers, Taylor Swift and Calvin Harris were music’s next great power couple. They had the looks, the talent and the money–lots of it. In fact, had the couple stayed together, they would have earned a combined $233 million in 2016, beating out the next highest-paid couple, Beyoncé and Jay Z, by over $120 million.

But, as so often happens with superstar duos, the couple broke up. Still they didn’t walk away completely empty-handed: Taylor Swift made $170 million last year , while Calvin Harris made $63 million, earning them the number one and number 21 spot on the Celebrity 100 , respectively.

So how did Swift manage to out-earn her now ex-beau by $107 million? Touring is the easy answer. Swift’s 1989 World Tour grossed $200 million in North America, breaking a record previously set by the Rolling Stones, and eventually grossed another $50 million around the globe.

Adding to the multi-million dollar cut from the tour are payoffs from deals with the likes of Diet Coke, Keds and Apple–her commercials for Apple Music earned her high marks, in addition to a high payday. Swift also has a notorious relationship with streaming services, keeping her music off free platforms like Spotify. This means people are more likely to buy her albums, and they do: According to data from the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry, 1989 sold 9.5 million albums in 2014 and 2015 , combined.

The listening population has also been kind to Harris, though not to nearly the same extent. The DJ–the highest-paid in the world–has taken advantage of the high payoffs for playing in Las Vegas, where he receives a fee of more than $250,000 for every appearance. He’s headlined festivals, such as Coachella, where it known that festivals can make in the seven figures.

The other area where Harris lags far behind his former girlfriend is endorsements. While Swift’s recognizable face is beloved by brands (as is her loyal and large fanbase–she has over 85 million Instagram followers and over 79 million Twitter followers), Harris has not made as big of a an impression. His relatively small endorsement money coming from Giorgio Armani, as well as a few comparatively smaller brands.

But now that he has dated Swift, that all may change. Who’s making someone famous, now?

French Court Acquits Dominique Strauss-Kahn in Case That Put His Sex Life on View

June 12, 2015 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

PARIS — Dominique Strauss-Kahn , the former head of the International Monetary Fund, was acquitted on Friday of aggravated pimping charges, concluding a case that made the private lives of public figures fair game for the French news media, even if the French themselves still seemed inclined to overlook dalliances by their political leaders.

The lurid details of the case, which included accounts of exclusive sex parties, nevertheless captivated France and shined an uncomfortable light on the sexual escapades of certain circles of a rich and powerful elite.

The ruling was widely expected. But after a four-year legal battle that paraded Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s libertinage, the judgment offered perhaps less a vindication for a man once considered a presidential contender than a sense of relief for a nation mostly exhausted by the subject.

It helped public patience little that Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s case overlapped with a monthslong story of President François Hollande’s affair with a woman who was not his live-in partner.

In 2011, Mr. Strauss-Kahn was arrested in New York and accused of assaulting a housekeeper at a hotel. Those charges were dropped, but in the aftermath allegations of sexual misconduct including sexual harassment and attempted rape surfaced.

The case concluded Friday against Mr. Strauss-Kahn, 66, centered on accusations that he used a network of friends and subordinates to organize lavish sex parties with prostitutes.

At the opening of the trial, Judge Bernard Lemaire said that the court was not an arbiter of public morality and that it was adjudicating only whether laws had been broken. But for many in France, where privacy, even for public figures, is often considered sacrosanct, the case crossed a threshold , as Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s self-described “rough” sexuality was dissected in court.

Christian Delporte, a history professor at the University of Versailles-Saint-Quentin-en-Yvelines who specializes in politics and the media, said Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s arrest in New York had started a debate on whether the private life of French politicians had for too long been swept under the rug. But he said that the case, full of lurid details, tested the limits of these new parameters.

“When your private life makes an entrance into the public space, the press now talks about it, like when Hollande was caught on his scooter ,” Mr. Delporte said, referring to the president’s secret excursions to visit his lover. “But the limit is giving morality lessons, and it is true that in the Strauss-Kahn affair, the more it went forward, the more it delved into questions of personal mores that had no consequence on public life.”

Pollsters who have looked at French attitudes toward the private lives of public figures say that in general voters are not swayed by private sexual activities. Although there was considerable interest in Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s private life, it did not translate into condemnation of his abilities to work in the public sphere, even though many felt he had crossed a line beyond other politicians’ escapades.

“This isn’t a fundamental variable in the political choices of the French,” said François Kraus, a pollster at Ifop, a polling institute based in Paris. “One can have a private life that is quite dissolute, one can have an unconventional marital arrangement,” he said, adding that it would not inform people’s voting here.

He added that views in France were deeply different from the “Anglo-Saxon model where Lutheran and Protestant morality believe that your comportment in private is a reflection of how you conduct your public life.”

In the Strauss-Kahn decision, judges in the northern French city of Lille condemned efforts to bring the case to trial, noting that the facts did not support the allegations of pimping. Mr. Strauss-Kahn’s “sexual practices” did not imply that he knew the women involved were prostitutes, the judges said.

Thirty-five text messages exchanged between Mr. Strauss-Kahn and another defendant, which investigating magistrates alleged should be interpreted as referring to the hiring of prostitutes, did not show that he was the “instigator” of sex parties with prostitutes, the judges said, adding that Mr. Strauss-Kahn had only the “behavior of a client,” which is not punishable under French law.

In France, having sex with prostitutes is not illegal, but soliciting, running brothels and pimping are. Mr. Strauss-Kahn faced up to 10 years in prison and a fine of up to 1.5 million euros, or about $1.7 million, if convicted.

During the trial, which took place in February, Mr. Strauss-Kahn acknowledged that he was present at the sex parties, which took place in Lille, Paris and Washington, and were attended by lawyers, judges, police officials and journalists, according to prosecutors. But he vehemently denied that he had played a part in organizing them or that he knew that some of the women present were prostitutes.

Thirteen other defendants stood trial, including a former Lille police chief. Most of the defendants were accused of facilitating the hiring of prostitutes for the parties.

Several of them were convicted of fraud and financial crimes linked to the organization of the sex parties, but all except one were acquitted of the pimping charges. Only René Kojfer, the former head of public relations at the Carlton Hotel in Lille, where some of the sex parties took place, was sentenced to a one-year suspended prison sentence for pimping.

Mr. Strauss-Kahn told the court in February that he would never have attended the parties if he had been aware that prostitutes were present, particularly given his position at the I.M.F. and his political ambitions.

“It would have been far too dangerous,” he said , noting that prostitutes could have been susceptible to “pressures.”
