Covid-19: 123 new cases in Sabah, most infections are sporadic, says Masidi

KOTA KINABALU: Most of Sabah’s new Covid-19 cases are sporadic, says Datuk Seri Masidi Manjun.

The minister in charge of pandemic matters in the state said out of the 123 new cases on Monday

(June 27), 81 cases were recorded in Kota Kinabalu.

“Out of these cases in Kota Kinabalu, over 85% are sporadic, which means the transmission rates are riskier in crowded areas,” he said.

Masidi urged the public to continue maintaining high preventive measures including practising ongoing standard operating precautions (SOP) to reduce the spread of Covid-19.

He said from the total new cases, 121 were under Category 1 and Category 2, while two were under Category 4.

Apart from Kota Kinabalu, the other districts with new cases reported are Penampang with 13 cases, Keningau (nine), Tuaran (nine), Kota Belud (three), Ranau (two), Tambunan (two), and one each in Papar, Tawau, Tenom and Tongod.

There were no new clusters reported on Monday.

New Delhi: The Tamil Nadu Government on Friday informed the Madras High Court that one of the seven life term convicts in the Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, Nalini Sriharan was granted parole for one month at the request of her ailing mother, reported ANI. Nalini’s advocate, Radhakrishnan was quoted by ANI as saying: “She will be released on parole today after completing surety formalities.”

A division bench of Justices P N Prakash and R Hemlatha was informed by the public prosecutor, Hasan Mohammed about the parole, reported PTI. S Padma, mother of Nalini Sriharan had filed a habeas corpus petition requesting for the parole of her daughter, which came up for further hearing today.

The petition was closed after this recording.

Padma, in her petition, had stated that she wanted her daughter to be by her bedside as she was suffering from various illnesses. Regarding the same, she had sent several representations to the Tamil Nadu government which were of no avail.

Nalini would be staying with her mother, sister Kalyani, and brother Bhagyanathan in Vellore for one month.

Seven people were convicted for life term in connection with the assassination of former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi. He was assassinated by a suicide bomber of the Liberation of Tamil Tiger Eelam (LTTE) at Sriperumbudur on May 21, 1991. Among the seven people convicted were Murugan, Santhan, Perarivalan, Jayakumar, Robert Payas, Ravichandran, and Nalini.

This is the second time when Nalini would be granted parole, the last time was in 2019.

Currently, Nalini is lodged in Special Women’s jail in Vellore, while her husband Murugan is in Vellore Jail.

New Delhi: Malayalam actor and producer Vijay Babu has been arrested in an alleged sexual assault case on Monday after the bench of Justice Bechu Kurian Thomas had earlier directed the actor to surrender on Monday (June 27) at 9 AM in the June 22 ruling while granting the actor anticipatory bail.

The Kerala High Court had earlier granted the actor bail and asked him to surrender before the investigation officer on June 27 for interrogation. The actor has been reportedly granted station bail but will have to cooperate with the team investigating the case. The HC while granting bail ordered that if the police wanted to arrest him, he should be released on bail executing a Rs 5 lakh bond along with two sureties.

However, another registration of arrest is expected to follow based on the proceedings in the case for revealing the actress’ name on social media.

A debutant Malayalam actress whose first appearance on screen was with Vijay Babu registered a rape case in the last week of April accusing him of sexually assaulting her several times. In her complaint, she also said that Vijay has forced her to take drugs. Hours after the case was filed, Vijay revealed the name of the actress on social media and claimed that he was the real victim. The police then filed another case against the actor-producer for revealing the complainant’s name on social media.

As reported earlier by ABP Live, Babu fled the country fearing arrest after the police filed a case. He returned to Kochi only after the court granted him protection from arrest. But the court had earlier rejected bail plea in the second case for revealing the actress’ identity on social media.

Coronavirus cases seem to be on the rise again, with the government data reporting a 30.3 percent spike in cases for the week ending on June 19. The UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) has confirmed that the BA.4 and BA.5 are now the dominant strains in the UK. These Omicron versions are thought to be more infectious but just as mild as the variant responsible for the outbreak in December.

With hay fever also stirring up various problems, it could be difficult to identify Covid.

ZOE Covid Study app reports the “top” sign, spotted across 69 percent of their contributors, that could be telling – a headache .

While headaches can be a common problem, troubling many sufferers, the research portal explains how to spot a Covid headache specifically.

Representing a “less well-known symptom”, headaches are one of the earlier signs of the condition.

The ZOE app even explains that this painful symptom is “more common” than the classic Covid signs.

The traditional symptoms, originally linked to coronavirus infection, were fever, cough and loss or change to taste and smell.

When it comes to headache, there are a few clues that Covid headaches hold, including:

  • Being moderately to severely painful
  • Feeling pulsing, pressing or stabbing
  • Occurring across both sides of the head – rather than in one area
  • Lasting for more than three days
  • Being resistant to regular painkillers.

This stubborn sign tends to crop up at the very beginning of the illness.

And some Covid patients could be left with a headache for much longer than the initial infection as this sign is also characteristic for long Covid.

“Our data shows that these headaches often come and go, but thankfully they gradually reduce over time,” ZOE explains.

Although this painful symptom seems to be less common in children, coronavirus headaches tend to be seen across all age groups.

ZOE adds: “It’s important to remember that headaches are very common, especially as many of us are staring at screens for so long each day.

“So, although many people with COVID-19 experience headaches, most people with a headache will not have COVID-19.”

There are other signs that come hand in hand with headache which could help spot Covid, such as fatigue and loss of smell.

Other signs that could also point to the direction of the virus include a sore throat, fever, unusual muscle pains, a persistent cough and dizziness.

After the emergence of new symptoms linked to Omicron, the NHS updated its Covid symptom list.

Here are all symptoms linked to the virus, as listed by the health service:

  • High temperature or shivering (chills)
  • New, continuous cough
  • Loss or change to your sense of smell or taste
  • Shortness of breath
  • Feeling tired or exhausted
  • Aching body
  • Headache
  • Sore throat
  • Blocked or runny nose
  • Loss of appetite
  • Diarrhoea
  • Feeling sick or being sick.

The latest figures show coronavirus cases have increased sharply in recent weeks with around 1.7 million people testing positive across the UK in ​​the week ending June 18. This is equivalent to around one in 35 people – an increase of 23 percent on the previous week.

The rise is driven by the recent BA.4 and BA.5 subvariants of Omicron and UKHSA officials expect more cases over the coming weeks as people can catch these newer variants of the virus even if they have recently tested positive.

Professor Tim Spector, of the ZOE Covid symptom study app, said the fifth wave of coronavirus in the UK has already started.

He told The Independent: “We’re in a wave at the moment, heading towards a quarter of a million cases a day, that’s a wave already.”

He said that summer events could “potentially have a big effect” on Covid rates.

The return of mass events such as Glastonbury and Notting Hill Carnival and the Edinburgh Festival in August could cause Covid cases to spiral.

The Platinum Jubilee weekend earlier this month saw a 43 percent rise in infections.

He added: “We’ve relaxed everything. Most people don’t think there’s a Covid problem at the moment, most people don’t wear masks, or even worry about cold-like symptoms.”

Hospitalisation for COVID-19 has increased 31 percent week on week, increasing at a higher rate than the previous Omicron outbreak in March.

Healthcare chiefs have warned that the NHS is “already on its knees”.

Professor Sir Jonathan Van-Tam, who recently stepped down as England’s deputy chief medical officer, told BBC Radio 4’s Today programme last week that the country was in a different situation to previous peaks.

He said: “I don’t wear a face covering, but if there were circumstances where I felt it was a really closed environment, with very high crowding and very intense social interaction, then those are the situations where I might think ‘should I or shouldn’t I?’.

“And I think people have got to learn to frame those risks for themselves.”

He said experts would continue to monitor any large rises in cases and hospitalisations.

Sir Van-Tam added: “In terms of its kind of lethality, the picture now is much, much, much closer to seasonal flu than it was when [coronavirus] first emerged.

“And you know, we just accept in the winter that, if you’ve got seasonal flu and you’re poorly for a few days, it disrupts your life. And so I think we’ve got to start to frame Covid in a little bit more of those terms.”
