March 23, 2023 by deadline.com Leave a Comment

Essence Atkins and Tetona Jackson are joining Damon Wayans and Damon Wayans Jr in the latter pair’s CBS family comedy.

The untitled project, which picked up a pilot order in February , has also set Andy Ackerman as director and exec producer of the pilot.

It centers on a legendary talk radio host and happily divorced “Poppa” (Wayans) who has his point of view challenged at work when a new female co-host is hired, and at home where he finds himself still parenting his adult son (Wayans Jr.), a brilliant dreamer who is trying to pursue his passion while being a responsible father and husband.

Atkins plays Dr. Ivy Reed, an intelligent, savvy and bold, Ivy is the host of the “Ask Doctor Reed” radio show where she gives helpful advice to listeners with a modern approach on life. When the network wants to modernize Poppa’s outdated routine, Ivy joins him as a co-host; she quickly dismantles his old-school arguments, and a new rivalry is instantly born.

Jackson plays Nina, Junior’s loving, real and detail oriented wife. She is his biggest supporter, but his biggest motivator as well. She doesn’t want Junior to give up his dream, but hopes he can focus more on work in the meantime – she’s already raising two kids and can’t have him acting like a third. Even with all the distractions and family drama, Nina and Junior always make a great team.

Atkins is currently recurring on the BET+ series First Wives Club and ABC’s Milo Ventimiglia new series The Company You Keep. She previously starred for two seasons opposite Marlon Wayans in NBC’s Marlon . She is repped by Buchwald and Kathy McComb Management.

Americans voice confidence in their banks, but inflation woes continue — CBS News poll

March 23, 2023 by www.cbsnews.com Leave a Comment

Three-quarters of Americans have at least some confidence in their own banks, which is more than they have in banks and financial institutions writ large.

Inflation remains the No. 1 reason people continue to say the economy is bad, and that far outweighs recent issues with U.S. banks and the stock market, in the public mind.

That’s partly because as many people ascribe recent problems with banks to decisions made by those banks themselves as to any systemic issues with the banking sector.

Plus, most people simply aren’t paying very close attention to the recent turmoil — not nearly as much as during the 2008 financial crisis — which is perhaps a function of its not having spread as far.

The Biden administration, for its part, gets narrowly positive marks for handling those bank issues well, at 51%. But people do see disparities as events unfold: there’s a widely held view that government helps the wealthy more than the middle class when things do go wrong.

That said, there is plenty of uncertainty about the future, and people see significant disparities in those whose interests the government protects in the event of trouble.

Americans overwhelmingly think the government looks after the wealthy and large investors in banking issues, much more than the middle class, poor people and small investors.

Confidence in the system is connected to perceptions of who gets help. Those who think the government tries to protect the wealthy or large investors a lot tend to be less confident in the banking system than those who think it tries to protect the middle class.

Perhaps following from that, there isn’t a lot of confidence in the institutions and actors involved in managing the banking system — not in the Treasury, Federal Reserve, or the White House, and especially not in Congress.

That stands apart from who they think the government should help.

Most say no U.S. banks should be considered too big to fail, and that a bank’s customers, individuals, and businesses ought to be helped more than its stockholders and management.

And on a practical level, large majorities think loans are going to become harder to obtain.

The Biden administration, as a whole, gets higher marks for handling things well than the president does in his personal approval rating on this issue.

But for his part, Joe Biden does get higher approval on these banking issues than on other areas, including on inflation, specifically. And his overall approval rating stays where it was last month.

Views of the national economy continue to be negative, but not much worse than last month.

This CBS News/YouGov survey was conducted with a nationally representative sample of 2,117 U.S. adult residents interviewed between March 20-22, 2023. The sample was weighted according to gender, age, race, and education based on the U.S. Census American Community Survey and Current Population Survey, as well as the 2020 presidential vote. The margin of error is ±3.2 points.

Two pioneers of college basketball will be profiled on Saturday when two documentaries are shown on CBS and Paramount+. “Think. See. Do. – The Legacy Of Pete Carril” and “Dear Coach Stringer” will air beginning at 2 p.m. ET.

“Think. See. Do. – The Legacy Of Pete Carril,” which will air first, focuses on legendary Princeton men’s basketball coach Pete Carril and his coaching philosophy. Carril spent 29 seasons with the Tigers and produced a 514-261 career head coaching record during that time.

Carril died in August at 92.

“We are so proud to share Coach Carril’s story,” National Association of Basketball Coaches Executive Director Craig Robinson said in a press release. “This is the second of several documentaries we are producing as part of the launch of Coaches+ Media, and we look forward to building on our mission to present entertaining and inspirational programming around the positive impact coaches have made in all of our lives.”

“Think. See. Do. – The Legacy Of Pete Carril” will feature interviews with Jim Boeheim and Jay Wright.

Following “Think. See. Do. – The Legacy Of Pete Carril,” legendary Rutgers women’s basketball coach C. Vivian Stringer will be profiled in “Dear Coach Stringer,” which will start at 2:30 p.m. ET.

Stringer is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame and Women’s Basketball Hall of Fame. She also is the only women’s head coach to lead a HBCU team to the Final Four, which she accomplished when took Cheyney University on an impressive run during the 1981-82 season.

“C. Vivian Stringer is a giant in our game. We can measure her many achievements and successes, but we will never be able to fully quantify what she means as a role model and inspiration to so many coaches who have followed in her footsteps,” Women’s Basketball Coaches Association Executive Director Danielle Donehew said in a press release. “The WBCA is proud to be associated with Coaches+ Media and honored to be part of presenting ‘Dear Coach Stringer’ and helping share Coach Stringer’s remarkable story.”

Oprah Winfrey’s “sparse” Harry and Meghan comments protect her star status

March 23, 2023 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

Oprah Winfrey’s “sparse” response when asked about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle during a TV appearance last week may signal a desire not to be seen as their “unofficial spokesperson” and to protect her own star status, Newsweek ‘s The Royal Report podcast has heard.

The TV veteran has been linked with the Duke and Duchess of Sussex since she attended their wedding in 2018 . In 2021 the couple sat down with Winfrey for a bombshell interview about their decision to step down as working royals.

During a recent CBS interview with Gayle King , a mutual friend, Winfrey was asked for her opinion on whether or not Harry and Meghan should attend the coronation of King Charles III in May.

“Oprah must get asked about Harry and Meghan all the time since the interview in 2021, and you could forgive her for getting a bit fed up of it,” chief royal correspondent Jack Royston said on the latest episode of The Royal Report .

In the interview with King, Winfrey replied: “I think they should do what they feel is best for them and their family. That’s what I think. That’s what the bottom line comes down to. What do you feel like is the right thing for you?”

She added: “They haven’t asked me my opinion.”

Royston said this somewhat “sparse and pared-down” response suggested that the star is wary of being seen as a spokesperson for Harry and Meghan.

“This is obviously a slightly cagey response,” he said. “I don’t know whether Oprah didn’t want to be asked or whether she just feels she’s not in a position to say. It certainly doesn’t sound like she’s got Harry and Meghan on speed dial right now—certainly not anymore, anyway.”

Royston went on: “Another possibility, though. I feel like maybe Oprah must know there’s a risk of her being viewed as a kind of unofficial spokesperson for Harry and Meghan if she gives her opinion too readily and if she’s always popping up, articulating what they might think and feel without them having to speak for themselves.”

Winfrey has a long-established career of her own and “an absolutely glittering reputation,” Royston pointed out.

“She is perhaps as close as America gets to royalty and that reputation long precedes the interview of Harry and Meghan,” he said.

“So, maybe the sparse, pared-down response she gave is also just about preserving her own status as a star in her own right, rather than somebody who’s in orbit of Harry and Meghan.

“In fairness, who can blame her? From the point of view of American society, she’s the royal in the room.”

Newsweek has approached representatives of Oprah Winfrey via email for comment.
