Halle Bailey’s ‘Little Mermaid’ Movie Eyeing Huge Box Office Weekend

Halle Bailey ‘s ‘Little Mermaid’ got tons of backlash when it was first announced, but now that it’s out — it seems folks are more curious than angry … ’cause they’re flocking to see it.

Disney’s latest live-action adaptation hit theaters this weekend — a 4-day one at that — and so far, ‘TLM’ is cleaning up in ticket sales … projected to land on a record-setting box office haul, with an estimated $120 mil-$130 mil to its name by the time Monday rolls around.

Box Office: ‘The Little Mermaid’ Sprinting to $125M-Plus Memorial Day Debut https://t.co/B2JKJkBsrt

— The Hollywood Reporter (@THR) May 27, 2023 @THR

Some analysts have the film pegged to make more than $130MM — but Disney’s hedging their bets, saying it’ll probably be closer to $125 MM domestically. Overseas, the movie is said to likely draw an additional $80 mil … so it could hit around $200 mil soon enough.

That’s great for the Mouse House, as this movie reportedly had a budget of about $250 million — so they need this one to continue doing numbers for a bit to turn a profit.

While there’s certainly excitement for the debut weekend, time will tell if Ariel has legs to go the distance in the weeks thereafter. As we reported, “Aladdin” star Mena Massoud recently opined he didn’t think it’d hit a billion like his movie did … which came out pre-pandemic.

Funny enough, with these estimated figures, ‘Mermaid’ is actually on pace to overtake what “Aladdin” achieved in 2019 — and it’s on a new list of Memorial Day weekend titans. If all goes according to plan, ‘TLM’ should sit at fourth behind “Top Gun: Maverick,” “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” and “Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.”

Disney sues Ron DeSantis, alleging he “targeted” the company for political reasons

April 27, 2023 by www.cbsnews.com Leave a Comment

The Walt Disney Co. sued Florida Governor Ron DeSantis on Wednesday, alleging that the governor has overseen a “targeted campaign of government retaliation” that is threatening the entertainment and media giant’s operations.

The action by DeSantis “jeopardizes its economic future in the region, and violates its constitutional rights,” according to the lawsuit, which was filed Wednesday in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Florida.

In Israel on Thursday, DeSantis said the lawsuit doesn’t have merit and said the company is “upset because they’re actually having to live by the same rules as everybody else.”

“I think they filed in Tallahassee for a reason because they’re trying to generate some district court decision, but we’re very confident on the law,” he said.

The lawsuit comes after a year-long battle between DeSantis and the entertainment company, sparked when Disney publicly opposed his “Parental Rights in Education” bill , which prohibits instruction on sexual orientation and gender identity in schools. After Disney spoke out against the law, DeSantis sought to gain control of the Reedy Creek Improvement District (RCID), a government entity that oversees the region where the Walt Disney World resort is based.

That entity became the center of a bitter fight between DeSantis and Disney, with twists worthy of one of the company’s movies. DeSantis effectively gained control of the RCID, which he then reconstituted as the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District. The governor appointed five people to replace the elected members of the RCID, and mused that he might impose taxes on Disney’s hotels or even place a prison next to Walt Disney World.

But Disney made an end run around that maneuver, stripping the RCID’s board of much of its power, a decision that the new chair of the revamped board called “shameful .” Earlier this month, DeSantis unveiled a new legislative push targeting Disney that would void a last-ditch agreement the company made to strip power from his state-appointed board .

On Wednesday, the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District voided Disney’s development contracts, a move that the company said is “patently retaliatory, patently anti-business, and patently unconstitutional,” according to the lawsuit. Just minutes later, Disney filed its lawsuit.

“There is no room for disagreement about what happened here: Disney expressed its opinion on state legislation and was then punished by the state for doing so,” the complaint alleges.

A spokesperson for DeSantis said he is “unaware of any legal right that a company has to operate its own government or maintain special privileges not held by other businesses in the state.”

“This lawsuit is yet another unfortunate example of their hope to undermine the will of the Florida voters and operate outside the bounds of the law,” the spokesperson added.

$1.1 billion in taxes

Disney underlined its importance to Florida in its lawsuit, noting that it provides the state with $1.1 billion in state and local taxes last year and is one of its biggest employers, with 75,000 employees there.

The lawsuit also names the five new board members of the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District, plus its administrator, as well as the state’s acting secretary of the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity.

“Disney regrets that it has come to this,” the suit states. “But having exhausted efforts to seek a resolution, the company is left with no choice but to file this lawsuit to protect its cast members, guests and local development partners from a relentless campaign to weaponize government power against Disney in retaliation for expressing a political viewpoint unpopular with certain state officials.”

The company asks the court to find that the Central Florida Tourism Oversight District’s voiding of its development contracts to be “unlawful and unenforceable” because it allegedly violates Disney’s property rights, right to due process and First Amendment rights.

Disney “knows that it is fortunate to have the resources to take a stand against the state’s retaliation — a stand smaller businesses and individuals might not be able to take when the state comes after them for expressing their own views,” the lawsuit claims.

It added, “In America, the government cannot punish you for speaking your mind.”

Will has spent the last two decades at the forefront of pop after bursting onto the scene in 2002 after winning the first-ever series of Pop Idol.

You Can Now Get Paid $1,234 to Watch Your Five Favorite Childhood Movies

November 19, 2021 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

With Ghostbusters back in theaters and another Indiana Jones on the way, there’s never been a better time to indulge in the movies that shaped your youth.

Even better still, a satellite TV channel is looking to pay one lucky applicant $1,234 to re-watch their five favorite childhood films as part of an epic movie marathon.

That works out at just over $246 per movie to watch the likes of Who Framed Roger Rabbit? , Aladdin or maybe something a little more modern like Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone .

USDish will supply your five chosen movies, leaving you with the enviable task of watching them all from the comfort of your couch and getting paid for your time too.

According to USDish.com, applying is, to quote The Karate Kid , “easier than a sweep of the leg.”

“We’re looking for one person who’s willing to revisit their favorite childhood films and tell us all about it,” they said. “No degree, background check, or drug test is required to complete this adventure.”

In addition to the privilege of getting paid to watch great movies, the successful applicant will receive a “swag bag” containing $350 worth of goodies including personalized candy from the decade you were born and something to keep you warm while you binge.

After watching all of your chosen films, you’ll be expected to fill out a report comparing your experience of each movie now with what it was like seeing it as a child.

USDish explained: “You’re an ideal candidate if you take detailed notes on how each movie made you feel as a kid versus watching now as an adult, share the nostalgic moments on your social media and, of course, party on, dude.”

“For an even more excellent adventure, invite your kids (if applicable) to watch your favorite five with you,” USDish added. “You’ll have 15 days to complete your trip down nostalgia lane, and, remember, you choose the five movies to watch for a chance to win $1,234. It’s so easy, it’s—dare we say, inconceivable!”

To apply, you need to be over 18 and a U.S. citizen, and fill out a form choosing your five favorite childhood films as well as explaining, in 2,000 characters or less, why you are the ideal candidate. To have an even better chance, you can also submit a video as part of your application.

The deadline for entries is Friday, December 17. The successful applicant will be contacted via email by USDish on Wednesday December 29. To apply, click here .

Meanwhile , Ghostbusters: Afterlife is out in theaters and features several notable cameos from the stars of the original film but some are still wondering— will Rick Moranis be making an appearance?

Moreover, fans of all things nostalgia have been given a first proper look at Lily James and Sebastian Stan playing Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee in the upcoming Hulu series Pam & Tommy .
