Jorginho’s derby day howler proves how much Arsenal already rely on Declan Rice

September 24, 2023 by www.telegraph.co.uk Leave a Comment

There have been more than 550 matches in the professional career of Jorginho, a footballer who has spent the majority of his life receiving the ball under pressure and popping it past an opponent. Thousands of passes and thousands of identical moments, all baked into his subconscious, but none of them provide a guarantee that disaster will not one day strike.

If Mikel Arteta could choose one player to receive possession in midfield, just a few seconds after Bukayo Saka had given Arsenal the lead for a second time , he would probably have picked Jorginho. On this occasion, though, the Italy international’s brain sent a message that his legs did not understand. A heavy touch, a sudden turnover, and then a goal for Spurs.

This, evidently, is what the intensity of a north London derby can do to a player. Few fixtures are as consistently frenetic as this one, and few games are as testing of a player’s mentality. With Arsenal’s blood running hot — perhaps too hot, Arteta hinted afterwards — their composure was lost and their control of the game disappeared with it.

“There were moments where we played super-hyped,” said Arteta. “These derbies and atmospheres take you there. We lacked a certain composure on the ball to be more dominant, to get a structure in the game that we needed.”

If Arsenal largely won the midfield battle in the first half here, they largely lost it in the second. And there can be no doubt that the absence of Declan Rice, removed at half-time with a back problem, had a significant impact on that changing dynamic.

It is a measure of Rice’s impact in north London, following his £105 million move from West Ham United , that Arsenal already appear to be reliant on him in the heart of their midfield. Arteta spoke last week about how the 24-year-old has adapted quicker than even he expected and here, once Rice departed, there was a hole in midfield that Jorginho simply could not fill.

In defence of Jorginho, his game is not built on defensive intensity and aggressive pressing. It was striking, though, to see how Spurs were able to seize control of the central part of the pitch once Rice had departed. Jorginho was playing the same game as the Spurs midfielders, but he was often doing so a second too late. By the time he reached the ball, it was already on the way to someone else.

With Jorginho swimming against the tide, it was Yves Bissouma who took ownership of the afternoon. The Spurs midfielder is a man reborn under Ange Postecoglou and he eased through the gears after the break. No Spurs player passed more accurately, and no player did more to prevent Arsenal from finding their usual rhythm.

At which point it should be noted that Arsenal’s Thomas Partey, another high-calibre defensive midfielder, was missing through an injury of his own. Arteta’s options are suddenly becoming a little limited, especially with Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard also absent from this derby because of injury.

To be clear, Rice was not exactly dominant in the first half. But he was certainly more dominant than Jorginho and it will be a source of significant concern for Arteta that his team appeared more frail, especially mentally, without Rice’s energy and power on the pitch.

“I think that affected the team emotionally quite a lot,” said Arteta of Son Heung-min’s second goal, converted after Jorginho’s error.

As for the mistake itself, Arteta was strong in his support for his midfielder. Asked what had happened to Jorginho in that moment, he replied: “What happened is I love him, and we love him. Errors are part of football. They are allowed to make errors because they play and we don’t play. For us it’s really easy, but if there is someone who is willing to help the team, it’s Jorgi.”

The challenge for any team, of course, is to cope with the injuries that materialise over the course of the campaign. Arsenal found themselves without their first and second-choice defensive midfielders in this second half, and life became significantly more challenging. On this evidence, they can only hope that Rice’s absence is not long-term.

The Brentford striker is currently serving a ban for betting breaches but will return to action in January.

The 27-year-old recently opened the door to a move away from west London with Brentford ready to sanction his sale for a reported fee of £80million.

Arsenal are ready to make a move for the striker who netted 20 Premier League goals last season but will face competition from London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham. Chelsea are still in need of a reliable goal scorer up front despite their heavy spending over the last year while Spurs remain in the market for a new no9 following Harry Kane’s departure.

Manchester United have also been credited with interest in his services in the past.

Toney will likely have no shortage of suitors in January but the Mirror report Arteta hopes to convince the striker to head for north London.

The Gunners boss plans to sell Toney his ambition and vision for the club, hopeful it will be enough to convince him to reject rival clubs.

Arteta had such success in the summer with the club record signing of Declan Rice.

Treble-winners Manchester City made a late move to sign the England international from West Ham but Rice’s preference remained a move to Arsenal, eager to play under Arteta.

Meanwhile, former Arsenal star Paul Merson believes Toney is the only realistic option for his former side In January.

‘Only Ivan Toney is available for them in January – there aren’t many centre forwards around in the world. They’re a dying breed.

‘Years ago you had Michael Owen, Alan Shearer, Teddy Sheringham and Robbie Fowler were getting 20 to 30 goals a season and they didn’t get a million England caps. Ian Wright and Les Ferdinand too. Now you get to 20 goals in the Premier League and you play for England.

‘Toney is a good player – he can hold the ball up, he’s good in the air. Arsenal might have to go for him. But there are not a million centre forwards around.’

Is Bournemouth vs Arsenal on TV? Gunners look to bounce back after North London Derby draw – team news, kick-off time

September 28, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

ARSENAL will travel to the South Coast to take on Bournemouth on Saturday in a huge Premier League clash.

The Gunners secured a spot in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup on Wednesday night after a 1-0 win away at Brentford .

Mikel Arteta made a number of changes to his Arsenal team in midweek, with Emile Smith-Rowe making his first start in 499 days.

In the Gunners’ last Premier League outing, they drew 2-2 with North London rivals Tottenham after a thriller at the Emirates.

Meanwhile, Bournemouth also cruised into the Carabao Cup fourth round after a 2-0 win against Championship side Stoke City on Wednesday evening.

The Cherries are still seeking their first three points in the Premier League after a tough start to the season under new manager Andoni Iraola.

Man Utd get TWELFTH straight home cup tie & Arsenal face big London derby

Arsenal have a fine record against Bournemouth, winning the last seven meetings in all competitions.

They last lost to the south coast side in 2018, suffering a 2-1 defeat at the Vitality.

Bournemouth’s only ever result against Arsenal came in a 3-3 home draw the year before.

And they will have to give everything to ensure they come away with at least a point on Saturday.

What is their form like?

Bournemouth are still without a win in the league this season.

They have managed to get three draws along the way though.

And the Cherries have also racked up two wins in the Carabao Cup, giving them a much needed boost for the weekend game.

As for Arsenal, they remain unbeaten in all competitions this season.

But they’ve already been held to two draws in the league.

The Carabao win over Brentford helped them get over their underwhelming derby performance against Spurs.

And the Gunners will feel like they’re due a few goals against the Cherries.

What is the team news?

Bukayo Saka was left out of Arsenal’s midweek cup clash away at Brentford due to a foot injury he suffered in the 2-2 draw against Spurs.

But Mikel Arteta is ready to throw him into the mix at the Vitality after his Bees break.

Declan Rice also picked up a knock during the North London derby and was withdrawn at half time due to a back injury.

Leandro Trossard could make a timely return to the Arsenal squad in time for Saturday, while Bournemouth is likely to come too soon for Gabriel Martinelli and Thomas Partey.

For Bournemouth, Dominic Solanke is a doubt after being forced off against Stoke in midweek but his side remain hopeful he can make the starting XI.

Tyler Adams could make his first start for the club after his summer move from Leeds.

The midfielder came off the bench against Stoke in midweek to get his first minutes for the Cherries.

Emiliano Marcondes, Alex Scott and Ryan Fredericks are all unlikely to return for Saturday’s clash with Arsenal.

Who are the star men?

Dominic Solanke has been in good form for Bournemouth this season.

He has three goals in the league so far, and will lead the line provided he passes a late fitness test.

Arsenal are in the same boat, with Bukayo Saka also racing to be fit.

But he sat out Brentford and looks likely to make a stunning return to the side.

What have the managers said?

Andoni Iraola: “[Solanke impact] I think it happened pretty similar against Swansea.

“He came in, he didn’t score, but he was there in the goals and he gave us also different energy against Swansea.

“I think he’s played well. Overall, the team has been much better in second half.

“Unfortunately he couldn’t finish the game. Probably the worst part of the evening.

“We’ll see how he presents, if the ankle is swollen or not.

“But we have a very tight schedule, not even three days. It’s going to be tough.”

Mikel Arteta: “Saka was limping quite badly after the match.

“We had to get him off the field which is never a good sign.

“He hasn’t been able to participate in the session. [Bournemouth?] It’s a possibility.

“[Partey is] still not available. It’s a long list! Still not. The same with Jurrien [Timber].

“It’s the situation that we have at moment that we have to adapt.

“The squad we have at the moment is really short and we need players back, that’s for sure.”

Arsenal may sanction January midfielder deal as club ‘to return with new approach’

Jorginho

Arsenal news: Jorginho could leave the Gunners in January (Image: GETTY)

Arsenal could allow Jorginho to leave in the January transfer window, according to reports. Fenerbahce are claimed to be ready to return with a new approach for the Italy international who has fallen down the pecking order at the Emirates.

Jorginho is yet to start a Premier League match this season. He has come on as a substitute on four occasions as well as featuring off the bench in the Champions League win over PSV Eindhoven.

The summer arrival of Declan Rice meant Jorginho was always going to struggle for regular starts at the Emirates. Thomas Partey, when fit, is also ahead of him.

He was linked with a move away in the summer, just six months after he joined from Chelsea. Mikel Arteta was keen to keep him, especially with Mohamed Elneny not yet back from a serious knee injury.

Jorginho

Arsenal news: Jorginho is highly thought of at the Gunners (Image: GETTY)

But the situation could change midway through the campaign. Italian outlet Sport Italia claims Jorginho could be on his way out of Arsenal in January.

Fenerbahce were interested in signing him late in the summer. The transfer window in Turkey was open later than the Premier League but Jorginho’s agent ruled out an exit early in September.

But Sport Italia says Fenerbahce remain keen on Jorginho and are set to re-enter the race in an attempt to beat any other competition to his signature. Jorginho is in the final year of his contract but Arsenal do have the option to extend it by a further 12 months.

Arsenal could protect Jorginho’s value and ask for a larger fee if they do trigger that option. Jorginho has lost his place in the Italy squad due to his lack of action at club level so would understandably be keen on winning that back.

Arteta has always been a fan of the 31-year-old and has often spoken glowingly about his impact on the dressing room. Jorginho made a crucial error in the north London derby against Tottenham last weekend.

He lost possession just moments after Arsenal had restored their lead to gift Tottenham a second equaliser. But Arteta only spoke of his love for Jorginho after the match.

He said: “What happened is I love him and we love him. Errors are part of football. They’re allowed to make errors because they play and we don’t play.

“For us it’s really easy, but if there is someone who is willing to help the team and do the most of it, it’s Jorgi. We are all with him.”

Paul Merson insists Fabio Vieira ‘isn’t good enough’ and says Ivan Toney is ‘only option’ for Arsenal in January

Paul Merson believes that Fabio Vieira is ‘not good enough’ for Arsenal and that a January move for Ivan Toney is essential to sustain a Premier League title challenge.

Despite going ahead twice in the north London derby last Sunday, Arteta’s team were pegged back on both occasions by Tottenham and were forced to settle with a 2-2 draw.

It continues Arsenal’s unbeaten start to the season, but they now sit four points off Manchester City at the top of the Premier League after the champions’ 2-0 win against Nottingham Forest.

With injuries to Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, Mikel Arteta was forced to start Gabriel Jesus out wide against Spurs. Kai Havertz, meanwhile, has flattered to deceive since his big-money move from Chelsea in the summer, with the Gunners boss starting Vieira over the German for the last two league games.

However, according to Merson, such a lineup is emblematic of a lack of depth in the side, with the former Arsenal legend unsure about whether the Portuguese midfielder has the quality to start in Arteta’s side.

‘I was so confident that Arsenal would win on Sunday but when I saw the teams, I was majorly worried, he said to Sky Sports . ‘Jesus on the wing, [Eddie] Nketiah up front, Vieira – I don’t think he’s good enough. Then Declan Rice comes off and Jorginho comes on.

‘It wasn’t Arsenal’s strongest team but when you think about the Champions League and all the games they have to play, it looked a bit weak on Sunday, didn’t it?’

Despite his surprise first call-up to the England senior squad, Nketiah has only scored two goals so far this season in all competitions.

Along with Jesus’ injury concerns, Merson says the Arsenal hierarchy may be forced back into the market for a reliable no.9 and believes that a move for Brentford’s Toney – returning from his gambling ban in January – should be a number one priority.

‘It’s alright sitting there and thinking ‘they need a centre forward’ – but who is there?’ he added.
