Over the last month, at least 80 holidaymakers had their cars stolen after paying for a meet-and-greet service at Heathrow Airport, it has been reported. Travellers who paid up to £145 to Heathrow valet company Terminal Universal reported that the company’s phones were disconnected and their vehicles had gone missing.

“There was nothing we could do,” said one victim, Joanne Greedy, 39, of Cardiff.

She told The Sun: “So in the end we paid £100 for a train home.”

The Met Police have discovered 70 stolen cars, some of which were discovered in a field in Chertsey, Surrey, about 15 miles from the airport.

A 25-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of theft and later released pending further investigation.

A Metropolitan Police spokesman said: “Detectives based at Heathrow Airport are investigating a number of reports of stolen vehicles linked to a meet and greet parking service which operated from the airport.

“Over the last month, police have received around 80 separate reports of vehicles, which had been left in the care of the meet and greet company but had not been returned.

“Around 70 of these vehicles have been recovered and work is underway to return them to their owners.

“Enquiries into the circumstances continue, including locating any remaining vehicles.”

According to reports, the travellers placed their cars in the hands of an outside valet business that works out of the airport, but their cars were never picked up.

The financial news kicking off 2023 has been, dare we say, stressful: a contracting housing market, middling wage growth, and oh yeah, a persistent threat of recession .

But there’s a flip side to the news: Interest rates on high-yield savings accounts are rising in response to the Federal Reserve’s streak of rate hikes , the most recent of which upped the federal borrowing rate by 0.25%. While the Fed doesn’t set interest rates on consumer accounts, its actions influence them. And the payoff for consumers has been big: Some high-yield savings accounts are offering rates above 4%, a return that’s unheard of in recent memory.

Yet most people aren’t taking advantage of these higher rates. Nearly 80% of Americans don’t have a high-yield savings account, according to a recent survey by NextAdvisor . If you’re not one of them, you’re probably leaving money on the table. Consider this math:

  • Traditional savings account: The average interest, otherwise known as the annual percentage yield (APY), on a traditional savings account is 0.23% as of February 1, according to Bankrate’s weekly survey. If you leave $10,000 in a traditional savings account for 10 years at this rate, it would earn $232.40 in interest. (Worth noting: Even though 0.23% is the average, it’s not unusual for the big banks to offer 0.01% APY on traditional savings accounts, which would result in $10 of growth in this scenario.)

  • High-yield savings account: A high-yield savings account that offers a 4% APY, on the other hand, would net you $4,802.44 over 10 years, bringing the total amount of money in the account to $14,802.44. Of course, in the real world, you would likely put regular deposits in the account, so the grand total would ultimately be much higher.

The caveat in both of these examples is that interest rates on savings accounts aren’t fixed, so there will be some fluctuations over time. However, the long-term performance of high-yield savings accounts has generally been stronger than traditional savings accounts. And, as rates change, you can always move your money to a different savings account.

A high-yield savings account is a type of deposit account that is federally insured through the FDIC (Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation) or NCUA (National Credit Union Administration). It earns a much higher interest rate compared to traditional savings accounts.

In many cases, online banks offer high-yield savings accounts, usually in an effort to gain new customers. Most of these accounts will also offer the same features as regular savings accounts, such as monthly maintenance fees (if any) and the ability to transfer money easily to and from a linked checking account.

Here’s how high-yield savings accounts work: Once you make a deposit, it’ll earn interest. Depending on your financial institution, interest can be compounded and deposited into your account at different intervals such as daily, weekly, or monthly. Some banks may also require that you keep a minimum amount on deposit in order to earn interest.

Certificates of deposit, or CDs , are also a good option for higher interest rates, but you have to be prepared to leave your money in place for a while.

The cash in a CD — including the principal and earned interest — can only be withdrawn when the CD matures. You also can’t add money to a regular CD after the initial deposit.

NEW YORK (AP) — Middle seats at many U.S. movie theaters just got more expensive.

AMC Theaters, the nation’s largest movie theater chain, on Monday unveiled a new pricing scheme in which seat location determines how much your movie ticket costs. Seats in the middle of the auditorium will cost a dollar or two more, while seats in the front row will be slightly cheaper.

AMC said the pricing plan, dubbed “Sightline,” has already been rolled out in some locations and, by the end of the year, will be in place at all domestic AMC theaters during showings after 4 p.m.

Seats classified as “standard sightline” will be at the regular price. If you want to pay less for the “value sightline” seats, you have to be a member of the chain’s subscription service, AMC Stubs.

As movie theaters have attempted to recover from the pandemic, exhibitors have increasingly looked at more variable pricing methods. That’s included charging more for sought-after movies like “The Batman” in their first week of release.
