Georgetown is expected to name Providence coach Ed Cooley as its new men’s basketball coach to replace Patrick Ewing, according to multiple people with knowledge of the situation.

The news has also been reported by several outlets, including ESPN.com.

“Sometimes in life change is needed for emotional stability, for wellness and just because you’re at a place doesn’t mean everything’s forever,” Cooley told Morey Hershgordon of WPRI 12 in a television interview Sunday night.

“Providence has always been my dream job and I’ll continue to say that. Sometimes circumstance changes and it has nothing to do with administrators, it has nothing to do with athletic directors, it has all to do with where me and wife feel is something that we may possibly need.”

Cooley, a 53-year-old Providence native, becomes the first coach in Big East history to move from one league program to another. On Monday, it was reported on social media that Cooley and his wife Nurys had put their home in East Greenwich, RI up for sale.

He went 242-153 in 12 seasons at Providence with seven NCAA Tournament appearances, including this year.

A year ago, Cooley led the Friars to the Big East regular-season championship and the Sweet 16.

Cooley will replace Georgetown legend Patrick Ewing, who was fired earlier this month. Ewing went 75-109 in six seasons with one NCAA Tournament appearance. The Hoyas won a combined two Big East games the last two seasons. They went 0-19 a year ago in league play, 6-25 overall, and then finished 7-25 this past season, 2-18 in the Big East.

Georgetown hires Providence coach Ed Cooley to replace Patrick Ewing

March 20, 2023 by 247sports.com Leave a Comment

Georgetown hired Providence’s Ed Cooley as Patrick Ewing ‘s replacement to be the Hoyas’ head men’s basketball coach, CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander reported Monday . Cooley, 53, does so after being ” on the precipice of accepting an offer,” as Norlander reported earlier in the day .

Providence’s president, Rev. Kenneth R. Sicard, O.P., confirmed Cooley’s departure Monday.

“I deeply appreciate coach Cooley’s immense contributions to the men’s basketball program and to the PC community over the past 12 years,” Sicard said in a statement through the college. “Friar fans everywhere will be forever grateful for this period of sustained excellence in our program, and I personally will continue to have the highest regard for Ed. I wish him, Nurys, and their family all the best in their future.

“To our fans, let me state this without equivocation: We remain committed to competing at the highest level of men’s basketball. Our facilities, our fan support, and our record of success demonstrate the impact of that commitment, and I have full confidence that we will identify and hire a new coach who will build on this strong foundation and lead Friar basketball to continued excellence on a national level.”

A Providence, Rhode Island, native, Cooler guided the Friars for 12 seasons and accumulated a 242-153 record since 2011. Cooley led Providence to its first Big East regular-season championship in 2022 and a Sweet 16 berth.

“I would like to thank Ed Cooley for the efforts which he put forth over the last 12 years guiding our men’s basketball program,” said Providence athletic director Steve Napolillo. “He helped the program achieve a high level of success during that time. I, along with Father Sicard, wish him, his wife, Nurys, and his family all the best in the future. The Providence College family is excited to move forward with the hiring of the next great coach of the Friar men’s basketball program. Providence College is a strong academic institution with tremendous athletic facilities, one of the best home atmospheres in college basketball, and a member of the Big East Conference. I am so appreciative that Friartown has the greatest fans in the country.”

The Friars made the NCAA Tournament in each of the last two seasons. Providence went to five straight NCAA Tournaments from 2014-19 under Cooley, and the Friars would have qualified for the NCAA Tournament in 2019-20 if the COVID-19 pandemic did not cancel it.

Kentucky knocked off Providence 61-53 Friday to eliminate the Friars from the 2023 NCAA Tournament. Cooley was asked if we would be on the bench with the Friars next season following the game.

“Next question,” Cooley said.

Cooley’s name had been connected with the Georgetown job for weeks even before the Hoyas parted ways with Ewing.

“You know, guys, there’s all kinds of rumors and speculation, and I know you guys are trying to do your job,” Cooley said. “ I get it. But after a game like this, I just think it’s fair to talk about our players. I think it’s fair to talk about the game. That, man, I’m right here right now. I think those are very hard questions when you just are going off of speculation. Doing your job, but it’s about this game, and it has nothing to do with my future or my present.”

Kavitha at ED office for 2nd round of questioning

March 20, 2023 by www.rediff.com Leave a Comment

Bharat Rashtra Samithi leader K Kavitha on Monday appeared before the Enforcement Directorate in New Delhi for the second round of questioning in the Delhi excise policy linked money laundering case, officials said.

IMAGE: BRS MLC K Kavitha leaves from residence of her father, Telangana CM K Chandrashekar Rao, towards the ED office in New Delhi.

Dressed in a green saree, Kavitha entered the ED headquarters in central Delhi around 10:30 AM.

The 44-year-old MLC daughter of Telangana Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao was first questioned in the case on March 11 following which she was summoned again on March 16.

Kavitha, however, skipped the deposition last week citing her pending plea before the Supreme Court for relief against the ED action in the case.

The federal probe agency rejected her claims and asked her to depose on March 20. The apex court has decided to hear her petition on March 24.

During the nine hours she spent at the ED office on March 11, Kavitha is understood to have been confronted with the statements made by Hyderabad-based businessman Arun Ramchandran Pillai, an arrested accused in the case who allegedly shares close ties with her, apart from those of few others involved in the case.

The Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) leader’s statement was recorded under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA).

Pillai will also be produced before the court on Monday as his ED custody expires.

Kavitha could be physically confronted with Pillai and her former auditor Butchibabu Gorantla during Monday’s session.

The BRS politician has asserted that she had done nothing wrong and alleged that the BJP-led Centre was “using” the ED as the saffron party could not gain a “backdoor entry” in Telangana.

Pillai, the ED had said, “represented the South Group”, an alleged liquor cartel linked to Kavitha and others that paid kickbacks amounting to about Rs 100 crore to the Aam Aadmi Party to gain a larger share of the market in the national capital under the now-scrapped Delhi excise policy for 2020-21.

The “South Group”, according to the ED, comprises Sarath Reddy (promoter of Aurobindo Pharma), Magunta Srinivasulu Reddy (YSR Congress MP from Ongole Lok Sabha seat in Andhra Pradesh), his son Raghav Magunta, Kavitha and others.

The ED also alleged in Pillai’s remand papers that he “represented the benami investments” of Kavitha in the case.

Kavitha has earlier been questioned by the Central Bureau of Investigation in connection with the case at her residence in Hyderabad.

The ED has so far arrested 12 people in the case, including former Delhi deputy chief minister and AAP leader Manish Sisodia.

It has also recorded the statement of Butchibabu, an accountant allegedly linked to Kavitha, where he said “there was political understanding between K Kavitha and chief minister (Arvind Kejriwal) and the deputy chief minister (Sisodia). In that process, K Kavitha also met Vijay Nair on March 19-20, 2021”.

Nair was arrested in the case by both the ED and the CBI. Butchibabu has been arrested by the CBI and has been questioned recently again by the ED.

According to Butchibabu’s statement, Nair was “trying to impress Kavitha with what he could do in the (excise) policy”.

“Vijay Nair was acting on behalf of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia,” the statement recorded by the ED read.

It is alleged that the Delhi government’s excise policy for 2021-22 to grant licences to liquor traders allowed cartelisation and favoured certain dealers who had allegedly paid bribes for it, a charge strongly refuted by the AAP.

The policy was subsequently scrapped and the Delhi lieutenant governor recommended a CBI probe, following which the ED registered a case under the PMLA.

Georgetown hires Ed Cooley: Providence coach leaving Friars after 12 seasons to take over Hoyas program

Providence coach Ed Cooley has accepted an offer from Georgetown to be its next men’s head basketball coach, the school announced on Monday.

The move is huge for Cooley, considering his status as the hometown, favored son of Providence. To leave for the Hoyas’ program in Washington, D.C., is a seismic decision for Cooley, Providence, Georgetown and the Big East.

“I am excited for the opportunity to lead the men’s basketball program at Georgetown University. President DeGioia and Athletics Director Lee Reed are united in a strong vision, including in their beliefs, for Georgetown’s program, its players and the team’s success,” CooIey said in a statement. “I plan on hitting the ground running, getting to work on the court and cultivating relationships in and around the District. Accepting this opportunity with Georgetown is not a decision I took lightly, and was made in careful consideration with my wife and family.”

Georgetown fired Patrick Ewing earlier this month following a disappointing six-year tenure, and sources told CBS Sports the school has been targeting Cooley for weeks. Cooley met with Georgetown brass on Sunday. Cooley met with his family on Monday morning to discuss the decision. Cooley, who grew up in Providence, has long described PC as his dream job.

The move is a tectonic one in the Big East; this amounts to a coup for Georgetown, which strengthens its program and theoretically weakens its Rhode Island intra-conference brethren. Cooley coached Providence into relevance over the past decade; the school has been competitive on a near-annual basis since he arrived in 2011. Georgetown, conversely, has only made two NCAA Tournaments in the past decade.

For Georgetown, hiring Cooley is a symbolic and tangible torch-pass into a new era. Cooley coming aboard means that someone not directly affiliated with the Georgetown regime under Hall of Fame Hoyas coach John Thompson Jr. will be coaching GU for the first time since 1972. Following Thompson’s retirement in 1999, the program brought on his assistant (Craig Esherick), his son (John Thompson III) and his best former player (Ewing).

“We are deeply honored that Coach Cooley will be joining our community as the next leader of our Men’s basketball program,” Georgetown president John J. DeGioia said. “Ed is a proven leader and an experienced coach, whose values and knowledge of the game will lead our program into this new chapter. His commitment to excellence on and off the court will bring out the best of our basketball program and will give each member of our team the experiences and support they need to thrive. We look forward to welcoming Ed and his family into this new role in our community,”

“This is an exciting moment for Georgetown men’s basketball as we welcome Ed Cooley and his family to the Hilltop,” said Francis X. Rienzo Director of Athletics Lee Reed. “Coach Cooley is a mentor to young men, and a consistent winner with an impressive body of work. His previous experience gives him an understanding of our Jesuit values and I am confident that he is the coach to return our program to prominence within the BIG EAST and nationally.”

Now, a new age for Georgetown, and an unexpected major shift for Cooley, who many believed would retire at Providence.

Cooley, 53, has won 61.3% of his games over the past dozen years with the Friars, tallying 242 wins and taking PC to the NCAA Tournament seven times — the most in program history. In 2021-22, Cooley guided Providence to its first regular-season Big East title in program history.

“I deeply appreciate Coach Cooley’s immense contributions to the men’s basketball program and to the PC community over the past 12 years,” Providence president Rev. Kenneth R. Sicard said in a statement. “Friar fans everywhere will be forever grateful for this period of sustained excellence in our program, and I personally will continue to have the highest regard for Ed. I wish him, Nurys, and their family the best in their future.

“To our fans, let me state this without equivocation: We remain committed to competing at the highest level of men’s basketball. Our facilities, our fan support, and our record of success demonstrate the impact of that commitment and I have full confidence that we will identify and hire a new coach who will build on this strong foundation and lead Friar basketball to continued excellence on a national level.”
