Peter Gabriel warns musicians that AI tech could be coming for their jobs

March 20, 2023 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

Peter Gabriel believes AI machines will be able to perform most jobs in the future – and he’s encouraged his fellow musicians to embrace it.

The legendary singer and songwriter, 73, who first found fame with progressive rock band Genesis in the 1970s, has said AI will eventually dominate our lives.

Gabriel, who left Genesis in 1975, then embarked on a successful solo career that saw him bag four top 10 singles and two number one albums in the UK.

The decision to leave the band resulted in their drummer, Phil Collins , becoming their full-time singer and lead songwriter from the 1980s onwards.

Now, in a new interview, he has responded to comments made by fellow veteran singer Nick Cave, who referred to a song created by ChatGPT as ‘grotesque’.

‘We’re only just building AI, we have no idea what it’s going to achieve,’ Sledgehammer singer Gabriel said, referring to AI as a ‘powerful new tool’.

Speaking to Uncut magazine, he continued: ‘I can’t think of anyone whose job couldn’t be done better by Al in 10 years time, maybe five.

‘For instance, when I drive down to the studio, my Tesla is doing a lot of the driving for me – but I’m still keeping my hands on the wheel.’

‘The same thing is going to happen more in any process, including creativity. With some of the AI, half the artists want to play with it and half want to shut it down.’

Gabriel advised his fellow musicians to work alongside AI as opposed to ‘grumbling’ about it and ‘pretending it doesn’t exist’.

It’s unknown whether the Solsbury Hill hitmaker will be using AI or ChatGPT technology on his upcoming project, entitled I/o.

I/o, his first album since 2011’s New Blood, is expected to be assembled by a group of recordings from the day of each full moon in 2023.

Gabriel revealed in an interview before the pandemic that he had taken a brief hiatus from making music after his wife Maebh was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2016.

After Maebh recovered from her illness thanks to a ground-breaking new treatment known as CAR-T therapy, Gabriel went back into the studio.

Joliet’s Blighted Buildings Will Become Top Priority: Terry D’Arcy

Mayor candidate Terry D’Arcy talked with Joliet Patch about several rundown and abandoned properties across Joliet that warrant attention.

JOLIET, IL — When Joliet mayoral candidate Terry D’Arcy drives around Joliet’s west side, downtown city center and many older east-side neighborhoods, he sees signs of decay. He sees properties rundown, crumbling and remaining in a state of disrepair year after year.

For the third-largest city in Illinois, this is unacceptable, according to D’Arcy, and that’s why he has made quality of life —including addressing dilapidated and abandoned properties by getting them back on the tax roll —a cornerstone of his campaign as he meets with prospective April 4 voters.

During last week’s property tour with Joliet Patch’s editor, D’Arcy was in disbelief as he stopped in the 200 block of Eastern Avenue, near Osgood Park.

“You’ve got an abandoned house and kids playing next door,” D’Arcy remarked.

D’Arcy said the house needs to be torn down to remove the neighborhood safety danger.

D’Arcy said he’s seen firsthand how the city of Detroit has had tremendous redevelopment success by going block by block, demolishing rundown buildings and turning them into green space, and constructing new housing and commercial businesses amid the ruins.

As for parts of the east side, “we need to go neighborhood by neighborhood and speak with neighbors and see what they want to see,” D’Arcy said. “I call these our legacy neighborhoods. A lot of people lived in those houses 50, 60 years.”

After visiting Joliet’s Third Avenue area, D’Arcy went to the old U.S. Steel property along Collins Street, which has remained in a state of decay for nearly 40 years.

During his annual state of the city speech in February, Mayor Bob O’Dekirk announced that Joliet is working to bring a battery recycling plant and hundreds of green-energy jobs to the site.

Rather than recycling batteries, D’Arcy prefers to see the U.S. Steel site become an out-of-town tournament destination for youth sports such as baseball, softball and soccer.

He’s hoping to convince former Major League Baseball and NFL star Bo Jackson to open one of his indoor sports facilities, known as Bo Domes.

“Think about the pride it would instill,” D’Arcy said, for the neighborhood area.

If the Bo Jackson Dome sports complex became popular, D’Arcy said, it would generate more visitors to the nearby Old Joliet Prison, which re-opened as a tourist attraction in 2018, after remaining vacant and in deteriorating condition for about 15 years after the Illinois Department of Corrections closed the prison and sent the inmates elsewhere.

In downtown Joliet, D’Arcy highlighted the empty Barrett’s Hardware store property along Ottawa Street near the new Will County Courthouse.

In January 2019 — more than four years ago — Joliet Patch reported that Mike Patel, owner of four Joliet hotel properties, had purchased the empty Barrett’s Hardware store. At the time, Patel said he envisioned converting the Barrett’s building into an 80-unit or 90-unit hotel that would become a Marriott Springhill Suites.

However, Patel’s Springhill Suites project has not materialized, and his empty Barrett’s property has remained in a state of disrepair.

On Friday, Joliet Patch reached out to O’Dekirk for his response to D’Arcy’s campaign theme. O’Dekirk said the Barrett’s hotel redevelopment is still going to happen.

“US Steel, I have talked about,” O’Dekirk responded. “Barrett’s Hardware is building a hotel. All of these other properties are privately owned. If the city wants to condemn and demo, there is a legal process for that, which we do engage in.

“The city also has an economic development director that can help direct new businesses to empty sites. As you know, the economic development director is a position I created eight years ago and has been very successful as Joliet has seen over $5 billion in private investment the last eight years,” the mayor said.

“There is no question that in a city as large and as old as Joliet there will always be specific issues to deal with, but Mr. D’Arcy is ignoring the redevelopment along Jefferson Street including Tony’s Foods … He is ignoring the new businesses at Theodore and Larkin. He is ignoring the redevelopment at the old truck stop at Route 30 and I-55, Costco, Olive Garden, etc. …”

As for Joliet’s entrances and gateways, D’Arcy said the city needs to work with a landscape designer to have community entrances that generate a “Wow” factor, as is the case in a number of other communities.

For motorists entering Joliet, the image the city projects is “that nobody cares. We just look like an old industrial town that stopped caring,” D’Arcy said last week.

From his perspective, it’s unacceptable to have so many empty buildings remain in a state of deterioration, year after year. A number of empty commercial buildings remain along West Jefferson Street, including the Baker’s Square restaurant and the strip mall next door.

Last summer, Joliet’s City Council reviewed a proposal to convert the empty Baker’s Square restaurant at 2211 W. Jefferson St. into a marijuana dispensary store. However, the proposal was removed from the Council’s agenda before the vote took place.

In the 1000 block of Jefferson Street, the National Cleaners property has been vacant and remained an eyesore for the past several years now.

On the east side, within walking distance of the Forest Park Community Center, is an old neighborhood corner store that has remained empty at least five years along Woodruff Road near Arthur Avenue.

D’Arcy said Joliet needs to conduct a neighborhood by neighborhood inventory of blighted and abandoned properties and create a long-term comprehensive plan to address them.

“At some point, you have to start thinking, what’s the end game and how do we hold the owners accountable?” D’Arcy said.

As for the downtown, D’Arcy said Joliet needs to take a more proactive approach to attract more young entrepreneurs. He pointed to the success of Joliet City Council candidate Cesar Cardenas, who acquired 310 N. Ottawa Street, renovated the building, and opened his Unidos Marketing Network in part of the office building.

As for the city-owned building that once was Crabigale’s comedy club, D’Arcy said that property would be a great spot to open a student center, geared for the students from the University of St. Francis and Joliet Junior College.

Last May, Joliet Patch reported that John Bays intended to purchase Crabigale’s from the city; however, that project did not come to fruition. The Crabigale’s building has remained empty for about 16 years.

D’Arcy said Joliet needs a population base living in downtown Joliet to attract more restaurants and amenities.

In downtown Joliet, “there’s nowhere for kids to go,” D’Arcy explained. “We’ve got to give kids more things to do. Crabigale’s, right now, it’s doing absolutely nothing. The downtown needs to be the center of our community. We need more kids, more restaurants.”

D’Arcy realizes not everybody is on board with his ideas of bringing a Bo Dome to Collins Street, attracting college dorms to Joliet’s downtown and installing giant video boards over empty buildings and the city’s parking deck.

“If you don’t have a dream,” D’Arcy said, “you have nowhere to go.”

2023 Masters picks, odds, field: Surprising PGA predictions from top golf model that nailed 8 majors

March 20, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

USATSI

Scottie Scheffler was the No. 1 golfer in the world for almost a month when he won last year’s Masters. After relinquishing the top spot twice since then, Scheffler will return to Augusta National Golf Club at 10-1 to win in the latest 2023 Masters odds at Caesars Sportsbook. Scheffler is No. 1 once again after taking back the moniker from Jon Rahm on March 12, who is one of the the top 2023 Masters favorites at 8-1 behind Rory McIlroy (7-1).

McIlroy finished second at Augusta National Golf Club last year and has finished in the top five three other times headed into the Masters 2023. Before locking in your 2023 Masters picks, be sure to see the 2023 Masters predictions and projected leaderboard from the proven computer model at SportsLine .

SportsLine’s proprietary model, built by DFS pro Mike McClure, has been red-hot since the PGA Tour resumed in June of 2020. In fact, the model is up over $8,600 on its best bets since the restart, nailing tournament after tournament.

McClure’s model predicted Rahm to finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. The model also included J.T. Poston in its best bets to win the 2022 John Deere Classic. That bet hit at +5500, and for the entire tournament, McClure’s best bets returned almost $1,100. At last year’s Masters, McClure’s model was all over Scheffler’s first career major championship victory heading into the weekend.

In addition, McClure’s best bets included Collin Morikawa winning outright at the 2021 Open Championship, even though he was listed as a massive 40-1 long shot. The model was also all over Rahm’s (10-1) first career major championship victory at the 2021 U.S. Open. Rahm was two strokes off the lead heading into the weekend, but the model still projected him as the winner.

This same model has also nailed a whopping eight majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed it has seen massive returns.

Now that the 2023 Masters field is taking shape, SportsLine simulated the tournament 10,000 times, and the results were surprising. Head to SportsLine now to see the projected leaderboard .

Top 2023 Masters predictions

One major surprise the model is calling for at the Masters 2023: Cameron Smith, a six-time PGA Tour champion and one of the top 2023 Masters favorites, stumbles and doesn’t even crack the top 10. Smith is the defending Open champion and claimed an event in Australia late last year, but it’s been a rough go for him ever since. He finished 47th in his final event of 2022 before missing the cut in his first event of 2023, the only competitive golf he’s played in the last three months.

Despite the success that Smith experienced on the PGA Tour last season, it wasn’t his best year in terms of metrics, which could indicate he was on the right side of luck. He ranked outside the top 100 in driving distance and driving accuracy percentage, while placing just 136th on tour in the all-important strokes gained off the tee stat (-.125). With those struggles, and with only a missed cut to show for his 2023 events, the model is avoiding Smith at his current 2023 Masters betting odds.

Another surprise: Patrick Cantlay, a 22-1 longshot, makes a strong run at the title. He has a much better chance to win than his odds imply, so he’s a target for anyone looking for a huge payday. Cantlay is still looking for his first PGA Tour win this season, but he’s posted three top-five showings.

The total distance of the course at Augusta National seems to increase incrementally every year, but that plays right into Cantlay’s hands. He’s hit well above the average driving distance of the field in every tournament he’s played in this season. Since the Genesis Invitational, has hit fairways at a 10.6% higher rate than his fellow golfers. Cantlay also holds the best scoring average on par-fours among all golfers (3.88), which is what he will see on 10 of the 18 holes at Augusta. See who else to pick here .

How to make 2023 Masters picks

The model is also targeting four other golfers with odds of 20-1 or longer who will make surprising runs at a green jacket. Anyone who backs these longshots could hit it big. You can only see the model’s PGA picks here .

So, who will win the Masters 2023, and which longshots will stun the golfing world? Check out the 2023 Masters odds below and then visit SportsLine to see the projected 2023 Masters leaderboard , all from the model that’s nailed eight golf majors, including last year’s Masters.

Lakers’ Austin Reaves is making a leap, but Gilbert Arenas rule may make it hard for L.A. to pay him for it

March 20, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Getty Images

Take a deep breath, Lakers fans. I know all of this feels familiar. An undrafted guard has emerged as a key rotation player. He is thriving as the Lakers deal with major injuries elsewhere on the roster. His presence is keeping a potentially doomed season afloat. He’s setting himself up for a major payday in the process. The Lakers lost Alex Caruso when this happened two years ago. Here’s the good news: the Lakers can legally match any offer another team makes Austin Reaves as a restricted free agent this offseason. If they want to keep him, it will be well within their power to do so.

Until a few weeks ago, doing so seemed like it would be a relatively affordable endeavor. While the Lakers could’ve locked Reaves up for two more years at close to a minimum salary had they managed their cap sheet a bit more effectively in 2021, the advantage of letting him reach restricted free agency in 2023 was that it effectively capped what the Lakers could offer him at the maximum amount allowable by the Early Bird Rights they’ve gained by having him on the team for two years. As Spotrac’s Keith Smith laid out in his excellent piece on Reaves’ new contract, that worked out to roughly $51 million over four years. He would make roughly $14.1 million in the final year of such a contract, a figure that’s probably lower than what he is worth now .

In other words, this would’ve been a bargain: a four-year commitment to an established 24-year-old with no significant history of injuries in a salary environment expected to see significant cap growth. No team is foolish enough to turn down that sort of opportunity. Not even the one that lost Caruso.

Of course, that relied on the idea that, from a value standpoint, Reaves was relatively similar to Caruso. They are very different players, but they represented similar things to the Lakers. For the most part, neither were particularly impressive box score players. Their impact was felt in advanced metrics and on-off numbers. Good things happened when Caruso and Reaves were on the floor. The progression felt somewhat similar: undrafted youngster grows into solid role player and earns solid role player money.

The last few weeks have created an enviable problem for the Lakers. Reaves is becoming something more than just a solid role player. While it’s far too early start speculating about stardom, Reaves is quietly growing into one of the most efficient offensive guards in the NBA .

He might have just saved the Lakers’ season on Sunday when his 35 points held off an Orlando Magic comeback and preserved a desperately needed victory. He’s averaging 15.4 points per game since the Lakers traded Russell Westbrook on a preposterous 58-43-81 shooting line that has never been matched by a 15-point scorer over a full season. In the month of March, he has attempted 77 total free throws. That is more than DeMar DeRozan (67), James Harden (58) and Trae Young (53).

And these aren’t role player passes. These are high-end starting point guard passes… and they all come from a single half of a single game.

“Wow, Sam, are these Austin Reaves’ passing highlights for the entire season?” pic.twitter.com/ZWXSiJIeFN

— Sam Quinn (@SamQuinnCBS) March 20, 2023

It’s too early to say where this is going, but it hardly matters because Reaves scales up or down so seamlessly. He’s spent the first two years of his career playing with Westbrook and LeBron James . He’s perfectly comfortable functioning in a catch-and-shoot capacity when necessary. But stick him Dennis Schroder and D’Angelo Russell instead and he turns into this higher-usage free-throw merchant and floor general. Virtually every metric praises his defense, and the eye test supports him there. Reaves was far more advanced than most rookies in terms of footwork and floor-navigation a year ago, but lacked the physical strength to hold his own in the post or fight through screens. He’s bulked up this season, and at 24, he still has room for both literal and figurative growth. Every team in the NBA wants an Austin Reaves.

And this is where things get complicated for the Lakers, because while they can offer Reaves only the Early Bird max (which starts at 105 percent of the average player’s salary), other teams have no such constraint. So long as they have the cap space to do so, they can offer Reaves an extra $29 million on top of the $51 million the Lakers are free to give him for a total of $80 million over four years.

Once again, Lakers fans, take a deep breath. This does not mean the Lakers will be unable to retain Reaves. The NBA offers a workaround, but it’s a risky one. In 2002, the Washington Wizards used their cap space to offer then-restricted free agent Gilbert Arenas a six-year, $60 million contract that exceeded Golden State’s Early Bird Rights. This meant that they legally could not match the offer, and were forced to watch Arenas grow into an All-Star with the Wizards. Soon after, the NBA changed the rules to ensure that never happened again. This is the infamous Gilbert Arenas Provision.

Players limited by the Arenas provision, like Reaves, cannot make more than the non-taxpayer mid-level exception in the first year of a new deal. Their second-year salary on such a contract would see only a 5% increase in salary. But years three and four? They can go all the way up to the max. The signing team can use its cap space to structure the cap hits as the average annual salary in each of the four years. But the Lakers don’t have cap space, and would therefore be stuck with that backloaded structure.  Here’s what a maximum-salary Arenas Provision deal would look like to the Lakers, as projected by Smith.

2023-24

$11,368,000

2024-25

$11,936,400

2025-26

$27,724,010

2026-27

$28,971,590

Total

$80,000,000

You could argue that this salary structure actually benefits the Lakers financially, at least compared to paying Reaves a flat $20 million per year. Their roster is currently constructed to operate above the cap, which will mean re-signing their own players and paying the luxury tax for the fourth consecutive season. That would subject them to the repeater tax, which will make limiting next year’s team salary paramount.

By backloading the deal, the Lakers would give themselves two years to sort out their finances ahead of Reaves’ jump. There are two other factors worth watching here: the new CBA (which is being negotiated as we speak) and the new media rights deal (which is expected to kick in for the 2025-26 season). The former could change the luxury-tax rules in ways that either help or hurt the Lakers. The latter could increase the cap by so much that an enormous salary jump for Reaves just isn’t that bothersome.

But remember, the Lakers are not the Warriors or the Clippers . Even though they outspend most of their competition, they operate within a budget, and that’s what makes this situation so tricky for the Lakers: they literally can’t set a budget for the 2025-26 campaign right now because they don’t currently have a single player under contract for that season. In fact, only three Lakers have fully guaranteed contracts for next season: James, Anthony Davis and Max Christie .

The Lakers will have a better idea of their outlook by this summer, when, at the very least, they will have to make long-term decisions on D’Angelo Russell and Rui Hachimura . But between the summer of 2023 and the 2024 offseason, they’ll also need to make decisions on Christie and whoever they retain among the non-guaranteed group of Malik Beasley , Mo Bamba and Jarred Vanderbilt . And, of course, James and Davis.

Are James and Davis still earning max money in 2026? Does Russell expect to remain a $30 million player in his next deal, and does he want a long-term pact or short-term flexibility? How much does the idea of a possible cap spike windfall factor into negotiations for players like Hachimura, Vanderbilt and Bamba, who have thus far earned limited salaries in their careers and may want to see if 2025 free agency looks anything like 2016 once did? The Lakers still have draft picks to dangle in trade discussions this summer.  There might be another meaningful player or two to consider here. For all we know, the Lakers will be entering the 2025-26 season having paid the luxury tax in the previous five seasons and the repeater tax in the last two of them.

A team with the revenue the Lakers have at their disposal probably shouldn’t fret over that… but… well… that was true in 2021 as well and we all saw how that went for Caruso. The market is going to be a bit more limited this time around. Any team hoping to throw this sort of offer at Reaves would need at least $20 million in cap space, and according to Smith’s most recent projections , only eight teams fit the bill right now: Houston, Utah, San Antonio, Oklahoma City, Detroit, Indiana, Sacramento and Orlando. The Rockets , Kings , Pacers and Pistons probably have too much invested in guards to justify this sort of expense.

But the Magic have only specialists in their backcourt and would absolutely love a player as balanced as Reaves. The Jazz have only two guards under guaranteed contracts for next season in Collin Sexton and Ochai Agbaji . The Thunder aren’t positionally picky and will gladly take a bit more ball-handling and defensive help. Gregg Popovich has no love for the Lakers, and could really use an upgrade on Tre Jones at point guard even if he did. More cap space teams could emerge in the coming months. There are going to be suitors here.

Reaves may not quite reach his $80 million max, but he’s playing himself out of the $51 million deal the Lakers surely hoped to give him this offseason. No matter where the final number falls, it’s almost certainly going to force the Lakers into a backloaded contract, which will, in turn, enforce upon them an uneasy degree of financial uncertainty. Whatever the price winds up being, the Lakers should pay it. But after what happened to Caruso, their front office has lost the benefit of the doubt on such matters. Fans will be uneasy until the ink dries on his next contract.
