Viola Davis becomes an EGOT winner at 2023 Grammy Awards

February 6, 2023 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

Actress Viola Davis is now a member of perhaps the most exclusive clubs in Hollywood: EGOT winners.

The 57-year-old actress earned the coveted designation – gained by winning an Emmy, a Grammy, an Oscar and a Tony – at the 65th Grammy Awards Premiere Ceremony on Sunday when she took home her Grammy, the last piece of the puzzle, for performance of an audiobook. She won for reading her memoir “Finding Me.”

In doing so, she became the 18th person – and third Black woman – to ever achieve the honor.

“I just EGOT!” Davis shouted as she accepted the award.

Davis began her work in theater, but her career has spanned from Shondaland to the DC Comics universe (where she played Amanda Waller in both “Suicide Squad” films and “Black Adam”).

Her journey to the EGOT started in earnest in 2001, when she won the Tony for best featured actress for her role as Tonya in the play “King Hedley II,” which examined the life of Black Americans throughout the twentieth century. But she really became a household name with her Emmy-winning role of Annalise Keating in Shonda Rhimes’s “How to Get Away with Murder,” which made her the first Black woman to win in the lead actress drama category.

She later won the Academy Award for best supporting actress in 2017 for her role as Rose Maxson in “Fences,” where she acted alongside Denzel Washington as his impassioned wife.

The famous acronym was coined by “Miami Vice” actor Philip Michael Thomas in 1984, who stated his (sadly, unfulfilled) desire to win all four awards within five years. The EGOT-less actor later tried to backtrack his statements, claiming EGOT stood for “Energy, Growth, Opportunity, and Talent” in an interview with the Miami Herald.

The term wouldn’t gain traction in the mainstream until NBC’s “30 Rock” made it into a bit circa 2009. Fictional eccentric comedian Tracy Jordan (Tracy Morgan), perhaps the least likely candidate for the honor, aspired to this lofty goal after encountering Thomas’ bejeweled EGOT necklace, and its relevance exploded from there.

Technically, composer Richard Rodgers became the first EGOT winner in 1962, more than two decades before the term was actually coined. In the ensuing six decades, seventeen more followed. Here’s the full list:

– Richard Rodgers

– Helen Hayes

– Rita Moreno

– John Gielgud

– Audrey Hepburn

– Marvin Hamlisch

– Jonathan Tunick

– Mel Brooks

– Mike Nichols

– Whoopi Goldberg

– Scott Rudin

– Robert Lopez

– Andrew Lloyd Webber

– Tim Rice

– John Legend

– Alan Menken

– Jennifer Hudson

– Viola Davis

Goldberg became the first Black EGOT winner in 2002, with Legend and Hudson soon following. Hudson tweeted her support of Davis, writing “Congratulations to a living LEGEND. Time to celebrate !!!”

Congratulations poured in from across the internet, with praises coming from such disparate sources as tennis legend Martina Navratilova, who referred to Davis as her “hero” to Rep. David N. Cicilline (D-R.I.) who called the honor a “much deserved achievement for an incredible talent.”

“Finding Me,” Davis’ memoir that cinched her EGOT status, “plunges into her childhood trauma.” The book punctuates Davis’ lofty accomplishments as well as the racism, generational abuse, sexual assault and poverty she survived.

“The process and artistry of piecing together a human being completely different from you was the equivalent of being otherworldly,” wrote Davis. “It also has the power to heal the broken. All that was inside me that I couldn’t work out in my life, I could channel it all in my work and no one would be the wiser.”

Troy Coughlin Jr. signs with Kalitta team for 2017

October 15, 2016 by www.motorsport.com Leave a Comment

Listen to this article

Both the Kalitta and Coughlin clans are among the family dynasties in NHRA, with Connie Kalitta, nephew Doug and late son Scott on their side of the fence; Jeg, his sons John, Troy, Mike and Jeg Jr, along with Troy Coughlin, Jr., on the other.

Now Troy Coughlin Jr. will join Kalitta Motorsports to drive the team’s third Top Fuel dragster, alongside Doug Kalitta and J.R. Todd.

Coughlin Jr., who drove in NHRA’s J&A Pro Mod series in 2015 and earned that category’s Rookie of the Year award, has spent the 2016 season racing NHRA’s Division 3’s Super Comp Lucas Oil Sportsman category and currently holds the points lead.

Coughlin Jr., 26, has also successfully raced in NHRA’s Jr Dragsters, Super Gas (2013 champ Division 3), and Top Dragster classes. A two-time U.S. Nationals winner, he started the process to gain his nitro license in November of 2015 and made three runs in Shawn Langdon’s Don Schumacher Racing dragster at Wild Horse Pass Motorsports Park outside Phoenix in early February of this year to achieve nitro-class licensing.

“I am very excited to be competing in the Top Fuel class with Kalitta Motorsports,” Coughlin Jr. commented. “Kalitta Motorsports has a lot of history and legacy in NHRA similar to my family’s.

He revealed that his first visit to the team’s Ypsilanti, Michigan race shop was the clincher.

“I noticed the family-type atmosphere and the extreme desire to win,” he said. “I knew this was the team I wanted to be involved with. I am studying hard and plan to hit the ground running and have a strong start to the 2017 season.”

At this time he has a limited schedule planned, but the team says it could be expanded with added sponsorship funding.

Jim Oberhofer, VP of operations at Kalitta Motorsports said that he was “thrilled to have Troy Jr. join our team. He has a ton of talent and passion for racing. The Coughlin and Kalitta names have a long track record of success in NHRA drag racing and we know Troy Jr. is going to help continue that tradition of success for years to come.”

Coughlin Jr. could be a contender for the 2017 AAA Road to the Future trophy as next season’s Rookie of the Year. That too would carry on a tradition, as in 1998 his uncle Jeg Coughlin, Jr. took that prize, as did three of his new teammates – Del Worsham (1991), Doug Kalitta (1998) and J.R. Todd (2006).

Coughlin Jr. has large shoes to fill on the family side. He’s the first Coughlin to compete in Top Fuel since his grandfather Jeg Sr. won races in the late 1970s and into the ’80s, his father is the reigning Pro Mod titleholder – his second championship – and uncles John, Mike and Jeg Coughlin Jr are all multi-time champions. Add up their Wally trophies and that’s 111 NHRA national event wins.

Kalitta Motorsports also revealed that Paul Lee, who will be driving a third Toyota Funny Car for them at Las Vegas and Pomona, will continue on a part-time basis in 2017.

Every Super Bowl score, MVP in NFL history: Patrick Mahomes looking to join list of repeat winners in 2023

Patrick Mahomes is on the precipice of making more NFL history. Already the first player to win league and Super Bowl MVP before his 25th birthday, the Chiefs’ quarterback will join a select group of players should he win MVP of Super Bowl LVII.

Mahomes, the MVP of the Chiefs’ victory over the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV, would become the fifth player to win the award twice. Each of the previous multiple Super Bowl MVP winners also played quarterback and — with recently-retired Tom Brady the lone exception — are currently enshrined in the Pro Football Hall of Fame.

Mahomes would join Bart Starr and Terry Bradshaw as two-time Super Bowl MVPs. Joe Montana was the first three-time winner, while Brady’s five MVP trophies is the measuring stick.

Here’s a look back at all of the scores and MVPs of the 56 Super Bowls.

Biggest Grammys wins and snubs as Beyoncé makes history at 2023 ceremony

February 6, 2023 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

Beyoncé made history at the 2023 Grammy Awards , which took place on Sunday, February 5, at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.

The singer took home four trophies at the music awards and is now the most-awarded Grammy artist of all time, with 32 wins.

Beyoncé picked up best dance/electronic recording for “Break My Soul” and best traditional R&B performance for “Plastic Off the Sofa” in the non-televised portion of the Grammys earlier in the day on Sunday.

Her song “Cuff It” was then awarded best R&B song at the star-studded televised ceremony, and album Renaissance won in the best dance/electronic music album category.

Her fourth trophy of the 2023 awards pushed the 41-year-old star, who announced her highly-anticipated world tour last week, to surpass classical music conductor Georg Solti’s record of 31 Grammys, that had stood since 1998.

While accepting her award for best dance/electronic music album, the star told the audience: “I’m trying not to be too emotional and just receive this night…Thank you to the queer community for your love, and for inventing the genre, God bless you.”

When the 2023 Grammy nominations were announced in November 2022, Beyoncé was revealed as the top nominee for the year, with nine nominations, and also increased her career nomination total to 88, tying her with her husband, Jay-Z, for the most Grammy nominations received by any artist.

Though the Beyhive, Beyoncé’s fans, were delighted with her record-breaking wins, they were left disappointed when she lost out on the coveted album of the year award, for Renaissance , to Harry Styles’ Harry’s House.

Beyoncé has been nominated for the award four times throughout her career but is yet to be named as the winner.

Elsewhere at the Grammys, actress Viola Davis earned the coveted EGOT status, having now become the recipient of Grammy, Emmy, Oscar and Tony awards .

The Woman King star won her first Grammy for her performance of the audiobook of her memoir, Finding Me , and is the third Black woman in history to achieve the honor.

Only 18 people have attained EGOT status throughout history, with fellow EGOT-ers including Whoopi Goldberg , John Legend, Sir Andrew Lloyd Webber and Jennifer Hudson.

The esteemed lineup of presenters at the 2023 Grammy awards included first lady Jill Biden , rapper Cardi B, actor and host James Corden, actors Billy Crystal and Dwayne Johnson, three-time Grammy winner Olivia Rodrigo and five-time Grammy winner Shania Twain.

Bad Bunny, Mary J. Blige, Brandi Carlile, Luke Combs, Steve Lacy, Lizzo, Kim Petras, Sam Smith and Harry Styles took to the stage at various points throughout the night to perform, and there was also a star-studded In Memoriam section that paid tribute to some of those from the creative community who have died in the last year.

The segment featured Kacey Musgraves performing “Coal Miner’s Daughter” in a tribute to Loretta Lynn; Sheryl Crow, Mick Fleetwood and Bonnie Raitt honoring Christine McVie with “Songbird;” and Maverick City Music joining Quavo for “Without You,” in honor of the late Migos star Takeoff .

‘The Backrooms’ Horror Film Based On Viral Shorts By 17-Year-Old Kane Parsons In Works At A24, Atomic Monster, Chernin & 21 Laps

February 6, 2023 by deadline.com Leave a Comment

EXCLUSIVE : Over the last year, director and VFX artist Kane Parsons has shot his YouTube following into the stratosphere with the viral success of his mysterious short, “ The Backrooms (Found Footage).” It’s the first in a series of found-footage horror videos which have thus far garnered nearly 100 million views and will now be adapted for the big screen by A24 , Atomic Monster , Chernin Entertainment and 21 Laps.

Parsons — who’s just 17 years old — will direct from a script by Roberto Patino ( DMZ ). He’ll just have to wait till his summer vacation.

Details as to the plot of the sci-fi horror feature are under wraps. But in the ’90s-set original short (which you can view below), a young filmmaker’s fall into another dimension leaves him wandering through an unsettlingly yellow, empty and labyrinthine office space, which may or may not be home to otherworldly beings. The film’s title and setting draw inspiration from the imagery of a creepypasta (or internet urban legend) published to the website 4chan in 2019.

Deadline hears that A24 was one of several suitors chasing the Backrooms feature pitch, though what their price point was at closing is unclear. Lucas Ford brought the project to 21 Laps, with Chris White bringing it to Atomic Monster. Chernin Entertainment and A24 will co-finance.

Shawn Levy, Dan Cohen and Dan Levine will produce for 21 Laps, along with James Wan and Michael Clear for Atomic Monster, and Patino. Alayna Glasthal will oversee for Atomic Monster, with Judson Scott exec producing for the company, alongside White.

Parsons has thus far helmed 16 entries in the Backrooms YouTube series — with his most recent entry, “Backrooms – Damage Control,” having been uploaded just days ago. Little else is known about the NorCal-based filmmaker, though he’s also previously created a number of animated videos inspired by the manga, Attack on Titan . He launched his YouTube channel, under the name Kane Pixels, in 2015.

Patino is a two-time Emmy nominee best known as the creator and showrunner of DM Z — a limited series, based on the dystopian comic books by Brian Wood and Riccardo Burchielli, which bowed on HBO Max last March. He also exec produced the show, starring Rosario Dawson and Benjamin Bratt, alongside Ava DuVernay. The writer, under an overall deal with Netflix, exec produced and wrote on the first two seasons of HBO’s Westworld and was previously a writer-producer on FX’s Sons of Anarchy .

Aquaman and The Conjuring filmmaker James Wan founded the leading genre-focused production company Atomic Monster in 2014. The banner most recently released the horror smash M3GAN , which has grossed nearly $150MM worldwide and spawned a sequel in a little less than a month. Other upcoming projects for the company include Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom , which Wan directed and produced; an adaptation of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot , starring Lewis Pullman, Alfre Woodard, and Bill Camp; New Line’s The Nun 2 , starring Taissa Farmiga and Storm Reid; and the Untitled Ian McCulloch Project, a series for Peacock, which it will exec produce.

Among the upcoming film releases for Chernin Entertainment — the esteemed banner of producer Peter Chernin — is a Netflix continuation of the Idris Elba series Luther , titled Luther: The Fallen Sun , which will hit limited theaters on February 24 before bowing on the streamer on March 10. Also in the works is a feature adaptation of the popular DC comic, Hour Man . Recent releases include Netflix’s fantasy Slumberland starring Jason Momoa, and the third seasons of the Apple series See and Truth Be Told .

Stranger Things EP Shawn Levy’s company 21 Laps will on June 2nd release its adaptation of Stephen King’s short story “The Boogeyman.” While the 20th film was initially set for a Hulu streaming release, it wound up testing well enough to make the pivot to theaters. The company will see the second season of its Netflix series Shadow and Bone released on March 16. Additional upcoming projects include the film Crater and a reboot of Alexander and the Terrible, No Good Very Bad Day for Disney+; the horror Mother Land for Lionsgate; the Levy-directed Netflix limited series All the Light We Cannot See , based on the Pulitzer-winning, global bestseller; and the recently announced Gnomes , based on the breakout horror short from Dutch filmmakers Richard Raaphorst and Ruwan Heggelman.

The indie studio A24 is coming off a pivotal year with Daniels’ daring martial arts metaverse pic Everything Everywhere All at Once , which last spring established itself as A24’s highest-grossing film and first to pass the $100MM milestone at the worldwide box office. The film, led by Michelle Yeoh and Ke Huy Quan, also recently notched 11 Oscar nominations — the most of any film in contention — setting the studio up to lead in overall noms for the first time, at a tally of 18.

Films coming up for release by A24 include Hereditary helmer Ari Aster’s Beau Is Afraid , starring Joaquin Phoenix; Celine Song’s acclaimed directorial debut Past Lives , which world premiered at the 2023 Sundance Film Festival; and the documentary Stephen Curry: Underrated , which also debuted at the Park City, UT festival. Upcoming TV projects from the company include Park Chan-Wook’s Robert Downey Jr. starrer The Sympathizer for HBO, and Lee Sung Jin’s Beef , starring Steven Yeun and Ali Wong, for Netflix.

Parsons is repped by 3 Arts Entertainment and Ziffren Brittenham. Patino is with WME, 3 Arts and Goodman, Genow, Schenkman.
