The State Of Teacher Pay: Michigan Ranks 41st In Nation For Average Starting Salary

Right now, schools across Michigan are working to fill open teaching positions in time for the start of the school year, and pay is a main factor in attracting teachers to fill those positions.

WSBT 22 Operation Education reporter Kristin Bien reports on the state of teacher pay in Michigan.

New numbers released this year by the National Education Association show educator pay by state.

In Michigan, the average teacher starting salary is around $37,820 dollars a year.

Michigan ranks 41st in the nation for average teacher starting salary, which is worse than all other surrounding states.

John Ritzler is not a teacher right now, but he was.

“People don’t go into education to get rich and retire early,” said Ritzler. “People go into education because they want to work with kids and they want to make a difference.”

That is why he got emotional when we sat down with him to talk about the state of teacher pay.

“Pay is not the only factor that is important, it is a factor that is important.”

Ritzler is the superintendent at Cassopolis Public Schools and since he took the job, six months ago, he has already had to hire a new teacher and he will have to hire at least one more this summer.

“If you come in with zero experience, straight out of college, we are just under 40 thousand dollars,” said Ritzler.

That’s actually higher than the average teacher starting salary in the state.

Still, that starting pay in Cassopolis, and throughout Michigan, is making it difficult for some school districts to fill open teaching positions.

“I’ve been in contact with some of our recent grads in the last week or so and they talk about what a big impact teacher pay makes on their decision where they go,” said Steven Mast, director of student teaching at Saint Mary’s College.

Student teaching is the last stop in college before teachers get their teaching license and it’s when students get a real look at the job ahead and the pay that will one day come with it.

“Teachers need to be supported so they need to be valued with pay, I know other things our teachers look for is a community where they are nurtured,” said Mast.

Ritzler says having a stable teaching community where teachers know they are cared for is an attractive feature school districts.

According to numbers from the Michigan Department of Education, Cassopolis Public Schools average teacher salary is $41,420.

It is the lowest average teacher salary in the county and one of the lowest in southwest Michigan.

“What could be tilting that number is average salary is going to be based largely on the age of your staff and I will say we have almost half of our teachers that are in the first year of teaching,” said Ritzler. “We are going to have a huge chunk of teachers that are making less money because they are at the very beginning of their careers.”

Ritzler says Cassopolis teachers with more experience can make over $60,000.

In addition to this, he says, there are other benefits the district offers to attract teachers like bonuses, merit pay, more health insurance coverage, tuition reimbursement, and higher pay for a master’s degree.

“So, there are a lot of other benefits that we are able to build in that not every district can, which is helpful, except for younger teachers, don’t really look at those things,” said Ritzler. “They just look at starting salary.”

It is why Ritzler says changing the state of teacher pay in Michigan should be a top priority.

So, districts like Cassopolis can not only attract new teachers but also keep them.

“It is also important that teachers feel valued because they are paid and paid an honest wage, but just that they feel valued as teachers,” said Ritzler.

According to numbers from the National Education Association, the average teacher salary for existing teachers in Michigan is $64,262.

That is below the national average but still puts Michigan 17th in the nation for average existing teacher pay.

The NEA report says that adjusting for inflation, the average teacher salary has actually been decreasing since 2012.

‘Haemolymph’: The sufferings of a wrongly accused teacher

For many years, Abdul Wahid Sheikh lived a life of peace and quiet. He would go to school in the morning, teach his students, spend time with them sorting out their issues, come back home in the afternoon to his family. The beautiful bubble burst when the police asked him to report to the local police station and arrested him as an accused of Mumbai train blasts of 2006 which claimed more than 180 lives.

The next nine years were spent proving his innocence. After being acquitted in the case, Sheikh decided to put it down in a book Begunah Quaidi, later translated into English as Innocent Prisoner . This Friday, Sheikh’s story makes it to cinema halls as director Sudarshan Gamare’s film Haemolymph releases at theatres across the country. Sheikh is both a relieved man, and emotional. “The film brought back memories of the prolonged stay in jail, the third degree treatment, false implication,” he shares his experience with The Hindu.

Excerpts from the interview:

You had already penned your experience in Innocent Prisoner. What led to Haemolymph now?

I returned from jail in 2015. A year later my book was published and many filmmakers started approaching me for making a film around my life. I did not say no to any of them. After listening to my story, nobody mustered up courage to make the film. When Sudarshan Gamare approached me, I told him, ‘You are not the first or the last to talk of making a film on my ordeal’. He had read Sunetra Choudhury’s book Behind Bars, which had a chapter on me, and my book too. We had many sittings about the script. Their team went through my chargesheet of 20,000 pages and the judgment of 2,000 pages. They saw the work I had been doing.

The film unit met you in Mumbai?

Yes. They hired space in a hotel in Mumbai and said, ‘You will have to sit with our team for two-three days and discuss minute details of the jail days’.

Didn’t you fear revisiting past trauma?

Yes, every now and then explaining the prison experience, I would get emotional. But I had a larger vision that if the film actually gets made, the world will know about my experience. What the book failed to do, this film has already done; those who watched the film at the premier (in New Delhi this past week), shed a tear. The film overwhelmed the audience and people asked about the 12 other accused too.

How long did it take to shoot the film?

It took two years to complete the film from research to shooting. As soon as the film’s shooting was completed, lockdown was imposed in March 2020. So the release was delayed. It will be screened at nearly 300 theatres from May 27.

How involved were you with the shooting?

I knew all the time where were they shooting in Mumbai. They used to call me regularly, and I attended whenever I had the time as I am also teaching in a school.

Was Riyaz Anwar who plays Abdul Wahid Sheikh in the film your choice?

No, he was the director’s choice. Sudarshan has worked with him in a couple of short films earlier. Riyaz has done a good job. There is a resemblance to my face and voice in the film.

How satisfied are you with the movie?

To a large extent…I understand it is not possible to encapsulate nine years of life in a two-hour film. Whatever the film shows is factually correct; whatever I underwent in jail or court, has been shown with honesty.

Were you arrested from school?

Yes and no. The illegal arrest took place when I was in school. They came and took me along. I came back a little later. For official arrest, they phoned me at home, asking me to come to the police station. I went over and they arrested me there. We have shown it in the film.

Aren’t you worried that the Intelligence Bureau guys who you say have often followed you will see the film too?

No, I am not worried. Let them watch a movie that narrates the life of a school teacher who is falsely implicated in a crime he did not commit.

School shootings rose to highest number in 20 years, federal data says

WASHINGTON – School shootings in 2020-21 soared to the highest number in two decades, according to a new federal report that examines crime and safety in schools across the United States.

The 31-page report, released Tuesday by the National Center for Education Statistics, also pointed to a rise in cyberbullying and in verbal abuse or disrespect of teachers over the decade that ended with the onset of the pandemic in spring 2020.

The surge in school shootings was stark: There were 93 incidents with casualties at public and private schools in 2020-21, compared to 23 in the 2000-01 school year. The record year included 43 incidents with deaths and 50 with injuries only.

The report uses a broad definition of shootings, including instances when guns were fired or brandished on school property, or when a bullet struck school grounds for any reason and regardless of whether students were present.

Ron Avi Astor, a professor at the University of California at Los Angeles, welcomed the broader definition, saying the report reflected a fuller picture, at a time when the 19 children and two teachers killed by a gunman at Robb Elementary School in Uvalde, Texas, remains close in mind. “If someone brings a gun to school and shoots it, that’s really traumatic,” Astor said. “It’s obviously more traumatic if somebody dies or is injured but the fear that that causes to all of the kids in school and all of the teachers goes far beyond the people who were hit.”

At the same time, some pointed out that schools are by far one of the safest places around for young people, who are more likely to be shot outside of school than inside.

“The increase in shootings in schools is likely a consequence of an overall increase in gun violence and not specific to schools,” said Dewey Cornell, a professor of education at the University of Virginia. “However, most schools will never have a shooting, and their main problems will be fighting and bullying.”

Students ages 12 to 18 did not express great fear about their own schools according to the NCES report.

Less than 5% were afraid of harm or an attack during the school year, according to 2019 data the report highlighted. And the rate of nonfatal crime – including theft, robbery, rape and various types of assault – declined from 51 victimizations per 1,000 students in 2009 to 30 per 1,000 in 2019.

It was hard to square the positive trends with the rise in shootings, said Annette Anderson, deputy director of the Johns Hopkins Center for Safe and Healthy Schools. “It’s a good start but I certainly would have liked to have a deeper dive on some of this,” she said.

Teacher difficulties with students increased in the last decade. Schools reporting verbal abuse of teachers at least once a week jumped to about 10% in the 2019-2020 school year, from about 5% a decade earlier. Similarly, schools reporting acts of disrespect for teachers rose to 15% in 2019-20, from 9% in 2009-10.

The percentage of public schools reporting cyberbullying at least once a week doubled in 2019-20 to 16%, from 8% in the 2009-10 school year, the report said.

Amanda Nickerson, a professor of school psychology at the University at Buffalo’s Graduate School of Education, did not attribute the rise in cyberbullying to the pandemic. “Part of that has to do with technology,” she said. “Kids are spending so much more time on computers, on cellphones.”

Twenty-seven percent of gay, lesbian or bisexual students in grades 9 to 12 reported being targeted by electronic bullying during the previous 12 months, compared to 19% of students unsure about their sexual identity and 14% of heterosexual students, according to 2019 data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance System. Students were not asked if they identified as transgender.

Especially notable as the pandemic continues: Just 55 percent of public schools offered mental health assessments in 2019-20 and only 42 percent offer treatment. Stephanie Fredrick, an assistant professor who also teaches at the University at Buffalo’s Graduate School of Education, attributes that primarily to “inadequate funding or access to licensed professionals.”

When dropping your child off at school, you don’t expect to be called into the teacher’s room and given your own telling off.

But that’s exactly what happened to this mum.

The woman has been left shocked after being confronted by her son’s preschool teacher about their new puppy’s name – with the teacher deeming it ‘extremely inappropriate’.

However, the mum couldn’t help but laugh after listening to the teacher’s complaints – and tried to put her straight about the entire situation.

Relaying the story on the mum’s behalf, her nephew told Reddit : “My auntie and uncle just recently got an adorable puppy and everyone was trying to help them come up with names, as they hadn’t thought of one before adopting.

“We considered a bunch of names but they finally decided to name the dog Tucker.

“Everybody thought it was adorable. What could go wrong with such a nice name?

“Well, my auntie and uncle happen to have an 20-month-old son and a few days after naming the dog, they got some complaints from his preschool teacher.

“It turns out their son can’t pronounce the ‘t’ sound well enough, and so when he talked about his new puppy, he referred to him as ‘f***er’ or simply ‘f***’.”

After explaining the mix up to the preschool teacher, they came up with a solution to nickname the new puppy Spot because he is a Dalmatian.

However, this came with its own set of problems.

He added: “My auntie still has embarrassing moments at the dog park – such as my little cousin yelling “Come here you silly f***er!” or ‘f***ing Spot’ when trying to address the dog.

“But normally people have a good laugh once she explains the situation so ‘it’s all good’ according to her”.

While most users couldn’t help but laugh at the situation, others shared their own stories of their children mixing up the ‘t’ and ‘f’ sounds.

One user said: “So funny. My son at about that age was asking for a fork but kept saying f*** at a large football party. Thank goodness they all laughed.”

Another user said: “I loved my childhood dog named Tucker – it’s a great name for a dog.”

It comes after a 19-year-old claimed ‘he’d never get a girlfriend’ because his dad went ‘rogue’ when registering his new puppy’s name at the vets.

He said: “I decided Holly was an appropriate name.

“Due to circumstances at the time, I couldn’t take her home immediately, so I left her with my parents for a couple of weeks.

“In that time, my dad listed her name with the kennel club as Mizz Princess Hollywood and did the same with the vet registration.”

But it was only when he was at the vets, and after he’d chatted up a girl in the waiting room, did he discover the punchline to his dad’s joke.
