Capcom has put in serious work to perfect the Resident Evil formula, and few of the titles have benefited as much as Village , a tightly focused RE game set in a gothic town filled with a wide variety of monsters and machinations. You play Ethan Winters, who explores and unlocks the village while running from — and eventually facing down — a number of terrifying enemies inspired by ancient horror tropes (plus, of course, the towering Lady Dimitrescu). The Series X does a particularly great job of running the ray tracing around Village while still ensuring 60fps. Gamers who like action with their horror will certainly want to try Village , even if it’s been a while since you’ve dipped your toes into the Resident Evil series.

You use these powers to explore a rundown resort and piece together what actually happened. Just one thing — the spiritual realm can get truly nightmarish, and you aren’t the only presence haunting these ruins. Those looking for plenty of narrative and exploration will enjoy this ride.

Release June 04, 2021

Survival horror has had an excellent few years, and The Persistence is a great example of how fine-tuned the genre has become. The setting will probably be familiar to you: You are on a dying spaceship desperately trying to survive, and a number of horror-inducing monstrosities are trying to do unspeakable things to you. However, several things make Persistence unique. It uses a roguelike cycle where you run expeditions into the ship, which constantly changes in layout, items, and upgrades. There’s a stealth system that requires you to hide in the darkness, and a shield system that focuses more on living through attacks than fighting back. This game takes its horror seriously, and the Series X enhancement is just icing on the cake (plus it plays well in VR).

Speaking of survival horror … Subnautica was a hit thanks to survival and crafting gameplay set in a hostile alien ocean, which constantly shifts from atmospherically stifling to downright scary (especially if drowning, endless water, ocean monsters, etc., make your skin crawl). Below Zero , the sequel, improves on the graphics and adds more to do, as well as more dangers in the alien sea. It’s a good choice if you like a little horror and challenge but don’t want to take it too seriously. Newcomers may want to play a little of the first game before, ah, jumping in .

This Outbreak sequel is Series X enhanced and ready for a buddy! It’s a co-op survival horror game centering on a scary nighttime zombie experience. There’s some Left 4 Dead in it, certainly, but with a variety of interesting twists:  You only get one life per playthrough, so scrounging for supplies and staying hidden is vital to success. Many missions include tense, timed activities where death is always just around the corner. The shadowy environments are also creepy in a way few recent zombie games have been — and horror is always more fun when you can bring friends along, too.

Little Nightmares 2 is filled with what made Little Nightmares so great, but with more of it. Here you play as another of these small people, a young boy trying to escape a creepy landscape dominated by an eerie signal tower — and a variety of twisted monsters, haunted locations, and more threats eager to hunt you down. Comparisons to Inside are easy to make, but there’s a greater focus on platforming than puzzle solving here, and the combination works very well.

PS Plus Premium – the best PS1 and PS2 games you can play for free

June 24, 2022 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

It’s not the greatest launch line-up, but PS Plus’ Premium tier still has some beloved PS1 and PS2 games to download.

Ever since it was announced, the most attractive aspect of Sony’s revamped PlayStation Plus service was the addition of retro games from older console generations; especially, the original PlayStation and PlayStation 2.

We’ve already covered the best PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 games you can get as part of the Extra tier, so now we’re going to focus on what’s included with the more expensive Premium tier.

As a reminder, this tier includes PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Portable games too, but we’re saving the former for its own list. As for the latter, well, there’s only one PSP game available in the UK at the moment: Echocrome.

Unfortunately, Sony’s line-up of PS1 and PS2 games isn’t great at launch. A lot of the PS1’s biggest names, like Tomb Raider and Crash Bandicoot, are absent and there isn’t even a single Ratchet & Clank in the PlayStation 2 library (although there are lots of PlayStation 3 games, oddly).

Sony will be adding to the selection over time though and while it’s a small selection, all of the following are still worth playing today. Just be aware that PS Plus Premium isn’t laid out very well on the PlayStation 5 dashboard, so you may have to search for these games manually to find them.

PS Plus Premium – the best PS1 and PS2 games available

Ape Escape (PS1)

One of the signature games from Sony’s Japan Studio before it was sadly shuttered , Ape Escape was unique at the time, since it was one of the first games to make use of dual analogue controls. It’s PlayStation 2 sequel Ape Escape 2 is available as well.

Dark Cloud/Dark Chronicle (PS2)

Before Professor Layton and Ni No Kuni, Level-5 got its start with Zelda-esque action role-player Dark Cloud. Part dungeon crawler/part city builder, it’s a fan favourite among many and its sequel, Dark Chronicle, is even better.

Everybody’s Golf (PS1)

While the rest of the series was handled by Clap Hanz, a second party Sony studio, the first Everybody’s Golf was developed by Camelot Software, who nowadays make the Mario Golf and Mario Tennis games. Behind its cartoony visuals lies a sophisticated golf sim that both casuals and experts can enjoy.

Forbidden Siren (PS2)

Known simply as Siren elsewhere in the world, this survival horror game’s claim to fame is being made by Keiichiro Toyama, the man who created the first Silent Hill, Gravity Rush, and the upcoming Slitterhead . You control 10 individuals across different time periods and use psychic powers to avoid and subdue the undead.

Jak & Daxter: The Precursor Legacy (PS2)

The original trilogy of Jak And Daxter games, plus the racing spin-off, are all available on Premium, but we feel most comfortable recommending the first one. A classic 3D platformer collectathon, its characters and world have a bit more bite than your average Super Mario, but its still got plenty of colour and charm – more so than its grim and gritty sequels.

Jumping Flash (PS1)

A rare example of a first person platformer, Jumping Flash puts you in control of a robot rabbit as you hunt for jet parts. It’s one of those games that seems to have only become more appreciated as time has passed and was among the first console games to make use of 3D graphics.

Oddworld: Abe’s Oddysee (PS1)

The original version of remake New ‘N’ Tasty , this cult classic sees you embark on a one-man mission to free your fellow slaves and dismantle capitalism. Although the remake is better in almost every way the original’s gameplay and visuals hold up today.

Red Faction (PS2)

Volition’s best known for Saints Row nowadays, but in 2001 it released first person shooter Red Faction. This game’s biggest feature is its fully destructible environments, giving you free rein to alter the world around you as you see fit. The sequel is just as good and also on PS Plus.

Resident Evil: Director’s Cut (PS1)

The game that kickstarted Capcom’s premier survival horror franchise. The director’s cut includes the original game and an arranged version that changes item and enemy placement. This was back when the series didn’t take itself so seriously and was chock full of so bad it’s good dialogue .

Syphon Filter (PS1)

Despite being one of the first franchises to be leaked for Premium, in the end there’s only one of the Syphon Filter games available at launch. This stealth action game from the studio behind Days Gone received plenty of acclaim back in the day, although never quite as much as the relatively similar Metal Gear Solid.

Tekken 2 (PS1)

It was a smart move to skip the first Tekken and just add its sequel. Featuring the entire roster from the first game, plus eight newcomers, Tekken 2 is considered a major improvement over its predecessor in and a prime example of early 3D fighting games.

Worms Armageddon (PS1)

What was once meant to be an expansion for Worms 2 evolved into the third game in the turn-based strategy series and is most fans’ favourite entry. It’s perfect for those who’ve been yearning for a more traditional entry and weren’t on board with the Worms Rumble battle royale.

PS Plus Premium – the best PS3 games you can stream for free

June 27, 2022 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

There’s a bevy of PS3 games worth revisiting or playing for the first time on PS Plus , and we’ve narrowed down the best ones.

Without any backwards compatibility built-in, the only way to access PlayStation 3 games through the PlayStation 4 was through its PlayStation Now service.

Even then, you couldn’t actually download the games to the console; you had to stream them, and this remains the case with the revamped PlayStation Plus service on PlayStation 4 and 5 .

This isn’t ideal, especially when the games from even older consoles – the PlayStation 1 and 2 – can be downloaded through normal emulation.

There are boring technical reasons for why the PlayStation 5 can’t easily emulate PlayStation 3 games. If you have a reliable enough Internet connection, however, there are plenty of quality PlayStation 3 games to try out, if you’re subscribed to the Premium tier.

As a reminder, the layout on the PlayStation 5 dashboard for PS Plus Premium isn’t very good, so you may need to manually search for these games.

Devil May Cry 4

Capcom has been pretty supportive of the PS Plus revamp so far, especially in terms of Resident Evil games, but Premium includes not only Devil May Cry 4 but a remaster collection of the three original PlayStation 2 games as well. Except for number 2 they’re all great games, with some of the best third person action ever seen and some outrageously cheesy one-liners.

Fallout: New Vegas

Definitely one of the easiest recommendations on PS Plus Premium, Fallout: New Vegas is regarded by many as the best entry in the series and it wasn’t even made by Bethesda. This action role-playing experience comes from Obsidian Entertainment, so if you loved The Outer Worlds (which is basically Fallout in space), you’re bound to enjoy New Vegas.

God of War HD

Kratos’ origins can be re-lived or experienced for the first time thanks to the HD remasters of the first two PlayStation 2 games and the PlayStation 3 exclusive prequel God Of War: Ascension . All three games offer excellent and bloody action but modern fans be warned: they play very differently to the PlayStation 4 game and Kratos is basically an entirely different character.

Ico Classics HD

The first game from the team behind Shadow Of The Colossus and The Last Guardian, Ico sees you and a young girl escape the castle you’re imprisoned in. If you’re subscribed to the Premium tier, you can also play the Shadow Of The Colossus PlayStation 4 remake, but we strongly recommend you experience Ico first as the connection between the two is very memorable.

inFamous

Before it moved onto Ghost Of Tsushima , Sucker Punch took a stab at making an open world superhero game with inFamous, which proved successful enough to get three sequels. The first two PlayStation 3 games are available on Premium and have you taking the role of a man with electrokinesis, who you can play as either a hero or villain.

Puppeteer

Another charming exclusive to come out of the now basically defunct Japan Studio , Puppeteer is a simple side-scrolling platformer with amazing presentation and visuals. This one’s perfect for parents and their kids to play together in co-op, but that’s no reason for solo players not to try it out.

Ratchet & Clank: A Crack In Time

Of all the PlayStation 3 Ratchet & Clank games available, A Crack In Time is easily the best of the bunch, offering the classic action platformer gameplay the series is known for. The one problem is that this is the third game of a trilogy, and the previous two games aren’t included for some reason. So, you may need to read a wiki beforehand to better understand the story.

Red Dead Redemption

It’s rumoured that the first Red Dead Redemption is getting a remaster or remake , but it’s still worth checking out the PlayStation 3 original. In 2010, this was the best Grand Theft Auto game not to be called Grand Theft Auto, and its tongue-in-cheek Undead Nightmare zombie expansion is a lot of fun too.

Resident Evil Revelations

What started out as a Nintendo 3DS exclusive, of all things, eventually saw an HD port; one that was well warranted as it’s one of the best Resident Evil spin-offs ever. At the time, Resident Evil Revelations was the return to form the series needed after the shambolic Resident Evil 6 , and its sequel is just as good, with its excellent asymmetric co-op.

Super Puzzle Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix

An HD re-release of the classic 90s tile-matching puzzle game, this won Capcom fans’ hearts with its compelling gameplay and fun art style, with deformed, cartoony versions of characters from Street Fighter and Darkstalkers. You can also get it as part of the newly released Capcom Fighting Collection .

The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion

If you’ve exhausted yourself with The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim , why not play its predecessor? Even to this day, Oblivion is revered by fans and is jam-packed with enough content to keep you busy until whenever The Elder Scrolls 6 releases. Although back in the day PlayStation owners had to wait a year after its launch on Xbox 360 to play it.

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition

Monkey Island is making a comeback this year so what better time than to experience the original? Both The Secret Of Monkey Island and its sequel are included and are some of the best, and funniest, point ‘n’ click adventure games around. Even if some of the remake artwork is funny in the wrong way.

XCOM: Enemy Within

We’re still pining for Firaxis Games to make XCOM 3, but you can bet we’ll be giving XCOM: Enemy Within a revisit. Aside from reviving the series for the modern era, this game wound up being one of the best video games we’ve ever played thanks to its accessible controls, huge amount of player freedom, and dynamic storytelling.

NBA All World Is Niantic’s Next Pokemon Go-Style Augmented Reality Game

June 28, 2022 by www.gamespot.com Leave a Comment

Niantic makes a very specific type of game that combines exploring the real world with GPS-based, augmented-reality mechanics. It has original games like Ingress and the upcoming Peridot , but its greatest success has been the established property, Pokemon. It even announced a game based on Transformers last year. Following Ingress, all of Niantic’s games have been based in some kind of fictional world, but its next partnership and game borrows from reality. NBA All World is a Pokemon Go-style game based on the NBA. To quote Niantic’s senior producer on All World, Marcus Matthews, the game is “The NBA lifestyle meets the real-world metaverse,” though Niantic has seemingly developed its own definition of what the term “metaverse” means.

All World is functionally similar to Niantic’s other augmented reality games where players explore the real world in order to collect items, be the top player on their local court, and play against NBA players (whose likenesses will appear in the game). It will feature authentic NBA music, merchandise, and footwear. For one example, Matthews said a nearby convenience store will become a location you must visit in order to collect stamina for your player, and a nearby sporting goods store will be a place to pick up the latest brand-name shoes to customize your team.

Matthews has a history of working on sports games, including the very first 2K basketball and football games on the Dreamcast. His pitch for NBA All World is to take the video game basketball experience and move it outdoors. Matthews referenced being a kid and walking to the park to play basketball with friends and claim bragging rights, and how he hopes that NBA All World can deliver a comparable experience.

Regarding the actual gameplay, Matthews cites his time working on the original 2K sports Dreamcast games. During the development of those games, his team was looking ahead and not trying to compare itself to the basketball games that were on the market. Matthews’ team is taking the same approach to NBA All World. Four pillars support the overall goal of the game. You explore the real world, customize your character, manage a team, and compete with others. While exploring, you can collect items and boosts for your player, compete against real-world players at designated basketball courts, and meet NBA players on the map to play basketball. Customizing is self-explanatory as you can design your characters with different looks and clothing, but you also manage a team of players and level them up individually.

In an example shown during the presentation, we saw the player character using a personalized avatar meeting an NBA player and competing in a three-point shootout. The camera was centered behind a 3D model of a player on a 3D court, and a climbing meter appeared on screen. To shoot successfully, you must tap the screen at the right time. If you win, you are able to recruit that player. It’s unclear how close this mechanic will be to Pokemon Go and if you will be able to collect multiples of the same player for your team. For the NBA players featured in the game, Matthews says they will play similar to their real-world counterparts. “Pros like Chris Paul will play like Chris Paul. James Harden will have his step-backs,” Matthews says.

The core mode, however, as Matthews refers to it, is playing one-on-one games against real-world players. In the gameplay shown, one player was seen dribbling the ball before leaping to take a shot and the meter appeared on-screen. How much control you have over the player while dribbling and moving is not yet clear, but it is all tap and swipe controls–the game will not use a virtual D-pad. “We want this to be a quick, accessible gameplay system,” Matthews says.

Matthews did confirm you need to be physically near other players on a court in order to play. You won’t be able to play against friends in other cities online. Niantic is working on a mode to be able to play against any player within a certain distance, but at launch you will need to travel to a physical basketball court in the game’s map database in order to play against others. Matthews says Niantic is planning on making parks and other notable locations valid play spots for areas that are not dense with courts. Optimistically, Matthews says the game may have more spots of interest than Pokemon Go in the future as many retail locations and stores will be integrated into the map database.

VP of global partnerships at the NBA, Adrienne O’Keefe, was also on hand for the presentation and teased opportunities for the game to overlap with NBA events. “In addition to this being a new genre for sports games, there are a number of ways we can take the location-based nature of this game and bring it to various facets of the NBA season,” O’Keefe said. “Have integration with NBA tentpole events, do location-based activity around games, whether it’s regular season or global games that take place in Tokyo, Paris, and elsewhere around the world.”

One confusing element of Niantic’s presentation was the use of the word “metaverse”. Matthews used the term to describe the game, as did O’Keefe. This is Matthews’ response when asked what they meant by the term “metaverse” and how it related to NBA All World. “At Niantic what we look at with the metaverse is really what we call the real-world metaverse. Instead of creating the virtual world for you to explore, we want to overlay our video game environment on top of a map of the real world and we want to take objects and items in the real world and locations in the real world and turn those into video game objects that you can interact and play with or against,” Matthews said, “So, I think virtual world games is what meta and other entities are doing, but what we’re doing is turn the real world into a metaverse.”

O’Keefe said conversations for NBA All World began about five years ago in the wake of Pokemon Go, and were kicked off by Niantic founder John Hanke’s love of the sport. “He is the creative spirit for the game,” Matthews said. NBA All World is planned for release during the 2022-2023 NBA season. You can pre-register for the game at NBAAllWorld.com .

Explosive scenes teased in Game of Thrones s7 e2 trailer

Game of Thrones might have finished last year on a controversial note but some fans want to know about the family trees between the great houses. Some of these Westeros families are interconnected with the big connection between the Starks and the Targaryens thanks to Jon Snow (played by Kit Harington) and Daenerys Targaryen (Emilia Clarke). Here’s a look at the family trees and lineage of the houses.

Warning – spoilers for Game of Thrones season 7, episode 7 ahead.

The season seven finale revealed what many fans have long-assumed – Jon is the son of Rhaegar Targaryen (Wilf Scolding) and Lyanna Stark (Aisling Franciosi).

Bran Stark (Isaac Hempstead Wright) confirmed the R+L=J theory to Samwell Tarly (John Bradley), who then clarified Rhaegar and Lyanna were married in a secret ceremony, making Jon the legitimate heir to the Iron Throne.

As Bran warged back to the Tower of Joy, where Jon was born, fans learned that the King in the North’s real name is Aegon Targaryen.

The reveal had an uncomfortable edge, as it came at the same time as an oblivious Jon went to bed with Daenerys – his paternal aunt.

Neither Jon or Daenerys knew at the time they were related. Season eight, which aired back in 2019, saw Jon reveal the truth to his aunt after finding out from Sam the familial link.

But how exactly are the two houses related? Here is a look at the family trees for House Stark, House Targaryen and more.

House Stark

The late Eddard ‘Ned’ Stark (Sean Bean) and his wife Catelyn (Michelle Fairley) had five children: Robb (Richard Madden), Sansa (Sophie Turner), Arya (Maisie Williams), Bran and Rickon (Art Parkinson).

Ned also claimed Jon Snow as his illegitimate child, but as we now know, Jon is in fact the son of Lyanna Stark and Rhaegar Targaryen.

Season seven saw Jon proclaimed King in the North with Sansa at his side but he eventually bent the knee to Daenerys for her help.

He also told Danerys about their family ties which didn’t seem to faze her. However, Jon ended things with her after finding out they were committing incest.

The epic Battle of Winterfell saw the Night King (Vladimir Furdik) finally defeated and the Other stopped once and for all.

Targaryen family tree

Game of Thrones: Targaryen family tree (Image: EXPRESS / HBO)

House Targaryen

The former ruling family of Westeros – until the Mad King Aerys II (David Rintoul) was killed by his own kingsguard Jaime Lannister (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau).

Daenerys is thought to be the only surviving member of the Targaryen clan and has returned to Westeros take her rightful place on the Iron Throne.

Although she took power, her line ended after Jon killed her in season eight not long after she committed an atrocity and burnt King’s Landing in a moment of madness.

House Lannister

The Lannisters were surrounded by enemies on all sides, and after the deaths of King Joffrey (Jack Gleeson), King Tommen (Dean Charles-Chapman) and Princess Myrcella (Nell Tiger-Free), were left without an heir.

Cersei and her brother-lover Jaime had been holed up in King’s Landing, while their outcast brother Tyrion (Peter Dinklage) had teamed up with Daenerys to take them down.

Sadly, season eight saw the Lannisters nearly extinguished after Cersei and Jaime died together in the ruins of the Red Keep, which caved in on them.

Tyrion is the last remaining Lannister now left and it’s unclear whether he will carry on the line of his family.

Greyjoy family tree

House Greyjoy

Euron Greyjoy (Pilou Asbaek) murdered his brother Balon (Patrick Malahide) and took his niece Yara (Gemma Whelan) captive.

Theon (Alfie Allen) vowed to rescue his sister, who otherwise faced certain death at the hands of her uncle.

Both siblings are still alive and returned to Pyke in season eight to rule over the Iron Islands.

Baratheon family tree

House Baratheon

King Robert Baratheon (Mark Addy) had three children with his wife Cersei, but all three were actually fathered by her brother Jaime.

He had many illegitimate children, but all bar one were killed on King Joffrey’s orders.

Gendry (Joe Dempsie) is the only remaining Baratheon heir and it’s unclear what happened to him at the end of Game of Thrones.

He had a liaison with Arya Stark but the pair later went their separate ways.

Margaery (Natalie Dormer), Loras (Finn Jones) and Mace Tyrell were all killed when Queen Cersei blew up the Sept of Baelor.

Highgarden and its family appear to be very much dead and gone now.

Oberyn Martell’s (Pedro Pascal) death at the hands of The Mountain was one of the most gruesome scenes in Game of Thrones’ history.

It left his wife Ellaria (Indira Varma) and his daughters, the Sand Snakes, as the only remaining members of the family.

Obara and Nymeria were murdered by Euron Greyjoy, who also captured Ellaria and Tyene and took them to King’s Landing.

There, Cersei poisoned Tyene and left Ellaria locked in a dungeon to witness her daughter die.

House Tully

The Tullys are another family close to extinction.

Edmure (Tobias Menzies) and his wife Roslin (née Frey) are the only heirs of the late Lord Hoster, however, Edmure was held prisoner at The Twins since the Red Wedding.

Unfortunately for him, his niece Arya seemed unaware of his plight when she travelled to The Twins to kill Walder and the Freys.

Edmure seemed to survive although House Frey is now pretty much gone thanks to Arya.

House Arryn

Petyr Baelish (Aidan Gillen) married Lysa Tully after the death of her first husband Jon Arryn.

This gave him influence over Lysa’s son Robin, the Lord of the Vale of Arryn.

In season six, Robin sent his army, The Knights of the Vale, to defend his cousin Sansa Stark from House Bolton in the Battle of the Bastards.

Petyr then attempted to turn Sansa on her sister Arya, but his manipulation backfired and he was executed.

Robin is now one of the main lords of Westeros since it became the Six Kingdoms.
