Mark Zuckerberg announces new creator monetization tools for Facebook and Instagram

June 22, 2022 by www.fastcompany.com Leave a Comment

In a seven-part threaded post yesterday, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg outlined near-future plans that aim to enhance opportunities for influencers and digital creators to earn money by posting on both Facebook and its Meta-owned sister platform Instagram. The announcement includes opening up the Facebook Stars token tipping system to all eligible creators, expanding the Reels Plays Bonus program to more creators, and launching a Instagram Creator Marketplace to help connect sponsors with publishers for brand partnerships.

“We’re heading towards a future where more people can do creative work they enjoy, and I want platforms like ours to play a role in making that happen,” Zuckerberg wrote.

Here’s what creators have to look forward to on Facebook and Instagram:

Free use of monetization tools until 2024: Instead of starting to charge creators to use Facebook’s paid online events, subscriptions, badges, and bulletin products, Zuckerberg says these tools will remain free for use until 2024, so creators will continue to keep all revenue earned.

Interoperable subscriptions: Facebook Groups will open up, allowing creators to grant access to subscriber-only groups to their paying fans and subscribers on other platforms—an interesting maneuver to attract younger users from the creator economy fanbase back to Facebook, which has, over the years, begun to skew towards an older demographic.

Facebook Stars: The token tipping system , which allows viewers to buy virtual stars and send them to their favorite creators will open to “all eligible creators,” Zuckerberg says. This gives publishers a platform-endemic revenue source to help monetize Reels, live streams, or videos-on-demand.

Reels Play Bonus program: Meta will open the Reels Play Bonus incentive to a larger pool of creators, who will become eligible to earn up to $35,000 each month based on the performance of up to 150 Reels creators nominate for inclusion.

Creator marketplace: As the creator economy expands and evolves, so does the interstitial economy—it’s no longer necessary to pay high agency fees or negotiate with managers in order to secure an influencer endorsement. Zuckerberg announced that Instagram will test a creator marketplace where brands and creators can connect directly for partnership and sponsorship opportunities.

NFTs: Long rumored to be on the horizon, it looks like NFTs are coming to both Instagram and Facebook. Zuckerberg says that starting with a small group of creators in the United States, the Meta-owned platforms will begin to allow account holders and creators to display and cross-post NFTs in feeds and in Instagram Stories.

Meta Halts Development Of First Apple Rival Smartwatch With Cameras. Details

June 27, 2022 by news.abplive.com Leave a Comment

Social networking giant Facebook’s parent Meta Platforms has taken a break from the development of a smartwatch which is touted to be an Apple Watch competitor in favour of other devices for the wrist, the media has reported. According to a prototype of the Meta smartwatch, the device features dual-cameras, which sets it apart from the smartwatch market leader Apple Watch.

The smartwatch, which has been in development for at least two years, was designed to include several features common in other smartwatches, including activity tracking, music playback and messaging, says a report by news agency Bloomberg. The social networking giant’s parent firm had initially planned the release of its smartwatch last year.

The existence of the first smartwatch by Facebook (now Meta) was confirmed in a report by The Verge in June last year.

A camera on the front of the watch display exists primarily for video calling, while a 1080p, auto-focus camera on the back can be used for capturing footage when detached from the stainless steel frame on the wrist, the report added.

Meanwhile, earlier last month, Meta started rolling out notifications letting its users know that it has updated its Privacy Policy, formerly known as the Data Policy. The updated Privacy Policy comes after the social networking giant took feedback from its users and privacy experts. The company had said that it has now made its Privacy Policy easier to understand and it reflects the latest products it offers. The company also added that Meta is not collecting, using or sharing user data in new ways based on this policy update and it does not sell user information.

Top 10 mistakes on social networking sites

July 14, 2010 by www.news18.com Leave a Comment

If you are reading this, chances are, you have an account on a social networking website. While these new age tools are a great way to keeping in touch with family and friends, some of your actions today can come back to haunt you tomorrow.

Before it gets too late, here are some tips to let you have a happy and fulfilling social networking experience:

Don’t lie: We are not suggesting that you turn into a Satyawadi Harishchandra overnight, but your lies are more easily discovered when more people know about them. If you can’t tell the truth, just avoid saying anything at all. It is much safer that way.

If you have reported sick at work, don’t post photos from the party that you went to bunking office. If you are having an affair on the sly, don’t mention anything about it online. Chances are your partner will discover it sometime or the other.

Want to get hired? Watch what you Tweet or Facebook

Facebook tops in online evidence: divorce lawyers

Don’t post when drunk: Alcohol impairs judgment and lowers inhibitions. So whenever you’ve had a drink too many, stay away from facebooking or tweeting. You never know what you might end up posting. Drunken posts are like a hangover: painful and you can’t do much about them.

Openbook searches ‘public’ Facebook updates

Don’t post when angry: If you are angry over something, the online world is not always the best place to vent it out. Take a deep breath, close your eyes, count up to 10 and then log out.

Don’t grumble about your workplace: While this is the favourite pastime of many, it is best conducted offline. Don’t forget that your boss and colleagues are also on your friends list and they can all read the nasty things you have to say.

This also applies for past workplaces. Your negative comments can cost you your job and also come in the way of future job opportunities. Employers are known to track social networking profiles to evaluate candidates.

Teens use social sites for job prospects: survey

Don’t add all personal details: While you need to add some personally identifiable information for people to discover you online, it is advisable that you don’t go overboard to post every little personal detail about you.

Cyber criminals analyse social networking profiles for information that can help them to steal your identity. Avoid posting personal information that are not necessary. While you may add your birth day and month (else your friends will forget to wish you on your birthday), you can avoid adding the year of birth.

Orkut, Facebook-users targets for cyber criminals

Don’t befriend unknown people: If you don’t know them, it might not be worth the while to be friends with them. It is easy to mask real identities online and when you don’t really know who your ‘friend’ is, you are better off not being friends with them.

Remember that people you are friends with on social networking sites have access to more of your personal content than the rest of the online world.

How to decline Facebook friends without offence

Online friends passe, find your evil twin on enemybook

Don’t just hit the send button: Before posting a message on your profile or sending it someone check it twice. You don’t want to send a mushy message to the wrong person or you may even consider rephrasing a sentence that can have a double meaning. And don’t forget the golden rule: when in doubt, cut it out.

Image-conscious youth rein in social networking

Don’t post confidential content : Social networking websites should not be mistaken for WikiLeaks. If the information is not meant for a larger audience, don’t post it online. The things that you post there can be traced back to you.

This also applies for information about the project that you are involved in at work. Many employers don’t encourage sharing of work-related content with the outside world.

Even treat those holiday pictures of you frolicking on the beach with some caution. Many images from social networking websites have found their way into porn sites.

Apple, Google more trusted than Facebook, Twitter

Don’t abuse or troll: Even in the offline world people don’t like abusive people. Abusing and trolling dents your online credibility, make you lose friends and also can get you blocked. It is social networking and not unsocial networking, a bit of civility is expected.

Also profile names like “IM oN tHE 7tH HeAVen aNd In NO mOdd 2 GEt DoWn,” are just not cool.

Exposed on Facebook

Don’t say anything if you have nothing to say: If you are not a celebrity, people don’t even bother about what you had for breakfast. Keep your choice of cereal in the breakfast bowl and let the world know of something more interesting, that is if you have something more interesting to say. Else, just don’t post anything.

Often people are more likely to post something stupid when they don’t actually have anything worthwhile to say. Moreover your witty remark will get lost between all your dreary posts.

Facebook wouldn’t shut down your account or your Twitter followers desert you if you don’t come up with something new every half-an-hour.

Felicia Teo’s alleged murderer discharged, but not acquitted: Is he no longer on the hook?

May 28, 2022 by mothership.sg Leave a Comment

A 37-year-old Singaporean man, Ahmad Danial Mohamed Rafa’ee, has had some dramatic changes of fate in the past few months.

His image is now familiar to many Singaporeans, as the face of someone who was facing a murder trial, and with that, the very real chance of the death penalty.

For 13 years, however, he lived a life out of the public eye, even after Felicia Teo, a woman he knew, went missing in 2007.

Then, fresh evidence apparently surfaced in 2020, leading to his arrest and subsequent murder charge.

You can read a quick recap of the story.

On June 27, Ahmad was given a discharge not amounting to an acquittal for the murder charge.

What is a “discharge not amounting to an acquittal”?

“Discharge not amounting to an acquittal” is a mouthful, and is often shortened to the acronym “DNATA” in legal circles.

A DNATA means that an accused person is no longer facing the criminal charge initially brought against them. This is one of the ways that a criminal case comes to an end.

In the case of Ahmad, he was charged with murder — in other words, accused of committing murder.

Now, he has been given a DNATA, which means that he is no longer being accused of committing murder.

How is a DNATA given?

Here’s part of Section 232(1) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC) (emphasis ours):

“… the Public Prosecutor may, if he thinks fit, inform the court that the Public Prosecutor will not further prosecute the accused upon the charge , and the proceedings on the charge against the accused must then be stayed and the accused must be discharged from and of the same.”

In other words, the prosecution decides it will not continue with prosecuting the charge, and informs the court.

This can happen at any stage of court proceedings before the accused is either acquitted or sentenced, the CPC says.

Meanwhile, Section 232(2) states that such a discharge “does not amount to an acquittal unless the court so directs” (for e.g., the court may do so if the prosecution applies for it).

Thus, the term “discharge not amounting to an acquittal”.

What is the effect of getting a DNATA?

This has some very practical implications — after spending 1.5 years in remand, Ahmad has now been offered bail, pending the outcome of the new charges he faces .

Ahmad could not be offered bail previously, as murder is a non-bailable offence in Singapore.

It’s not acquittal

But getting out on bail does not mean that Ahmad has been acquitted of the murder charge just yet — as the “-NATA” portion of “DNATA” would suggest.

Instead, Ahmad’s DNATA means that he is not a murder suspect at this moment. But, he can still face prosecution for a related crime if any evidence or information emerges later.

This is why his lawyer reportedly told the court that without receiving an acquittal, the murder charge will hang over Ahmad indefinitely.

What did the lawyer want for Ahmad instead of a DNATA?

What’s better than a DNATA?

There are a few possible outcomes to a criminal case that are preferable, compared to a DNATA.

One of them is acquittal — i.e., a verdict that someone is “not guilty”.

However, this isn’t a possible outcome in Ahmad’s case, as a court can only give a verdict at the end of a trial, and the case has not even proceeded to the trial stage yet.

Thus, another legal outcome that’s better than a DNATA is ” discharge amounting to an acquittal “, which is also commonly shortened to an acronym, “DATA”.

Just like a DNATA (“discharge not amounting to an acquittal”) the DATA comes about when the prosecution decides that they are unlikely to succeed in prosecuting an accused person for that particular offence.

But a DATA is preferable as it gives the accused person greater closure. An accused person who gets a DATA cannot be prosecuted for the same offence in future.

How is a DATA given?

For an idea of how a DATA is given, we can refer to a recent high-profile case that ended with a DATA: Yeo Sow Nam, a doctor who was accused of molesting a woman.

In Yeo’s case, the prosecution applied for a DATA mid-trial, after reviewing the evidence and the defence’s representations.

This came after Yeo’s accuser admitted that she had lied in court , while being questioned by Yeo’s defence lawyer about inconsistencies in her testimony.

The prosecution then updated its earlier assessment of the case, as it felt that “the inconsistencies, taken as a whole, would likely affect the assessment of the complainant’s overall evidence,” AGC explained in a statement .

It’s notable that this was a “he said, she said” case — where the accused was being tried on the testimony of a complainant alone.

With the key witness’ evidence being compromised by its inconsistencies, AGC decided that it could no longer prosecute Yeo, and thus applied for a DATA.

Why can’t Ahmad be given a DATA?

The DNATA tells us that the prosecution feels it does not have enough evidence (yet) to prosecute Ahmad for murder.

This is in spite of the fact that a skull fragment has been found, and was to be sent for forensic testing in the U.S. (the results of the testing are not publicly known).

But there is one more piece of the puzzle that prosecutors may be able to obtain: Ragil Putra Setia Sukmarahjana, the other half of the duo who was with Teo on the night she disappeared.

Ragil is not in Singapore, and prosecutors have made a request regarding him to the Indonesian authorities.

Should Ragil be located and arrested, his testimony could potentially change the outcome of Ahmad’s case.

This is likely to be a big part of why Ahmad has not been given a DATA.

What next?

Ahmad has been offered bail.

He will face six fresh charges, including charges of disposing of Teo’s corpse near Punggol Track 24, fabricating false evidence, and omitting to give the police information about Teo’s death.

He is reportedly expected to plead guilty to the charge of unlawfully depositing Teo’s corpse in a public place.

This is a significant development, given that he, along with Ragil, told police quite a different story back in 2007.

It’s a known fact that Teo visited a friend’s HDB flat at Marine Terrace, as CCTV footage retrieved from the town council showed Teo entering the lift and taking it up to the 10th floor with two men.

Ahmad and Ragil both claimed that Teo left the flat at around 2am, on her own accord.

But Teo was not captured on CCTV leaving the block via the lift.

With Ahmad expected to admit to disposing of her body, are we getting closer to the truth?

Even if one were to accept his story of what happened (and, assuming that story is made public), corroborating evidence may never come to light.

Opinion: Biden wants a gas tax holiday. Here are a few better ideas

June 26, 2022 by edition.cnn.com Leave a Comment

Charlie Dent is a former Republican congressman from Pennsylvania who served as chair of the House Ethics Committee from 2015 until 2017 and chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on Military Construction, Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies from 2015 until 2018. He is a CNN political commentator. The views expressed in this commentary are his own. View more opinion on CNN.

(CNN) During my first term in Congress (2005-2006), I vividly recall a surge in gasoline prices . Democrats blasted then President George W. Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney, demonizing them for their prior work in fossil fuels and the energy sector.

The Democrats contended these two oilmen led an administration too friendly to the oil and gas industry and initiated a war of choice in Iraq to serve those interests. Predictably, there were calls for suspending the 18.4-cent- per gallon federal gasoline tax.

It was a terrible idea then just as it is now. The House majority leader at the time, Tom DeLay, asked me back then how I felt about the proposed suspension of the federal gasoline tax, to which I responded: “It’s a dumb gimmick.” He agreed and he wisely never brought gas tax suspension legislation to the House floor.

And now, just this week, President Joe Biden proposed to suspend the federal gas tax for three months, better known as a gas tax holiday. This desperate political act misses the mark on many levels. Congressional Democratic leaders should give the Biden proposal the DeLay treatment: Bury it.

Demagoguing big oil, speculators, refiners and windfall profits will not change the fundamentals of supply and demand. Yes, Russian President Vladimir Putin’s grotesque, unprovoked war on Ukraine certainly is contributing to higher prices at the pump, but it is not the cause of our current predicament.

Demand for oil and gas has increased as we continue to emerge from the pandemic while supplies have not kept pace. It might be politically convenient to blame a few oil executives in Houston for higher prices, but that will do nothing to relieve pain at the pump experienced by Americans. Speculation on future supply and demand is a normal function of the market.

Opinion: The heat waves are a wake-up call: The government needs to help low-income families

A new oil refinery with significant downstream unit capacity, according to the Energy Information Administration, has not been built in this country since the late 1970’s. Jimmy Carter imposed a windfall profits tax in 1980, which further aggravated supply problems back then by discouraging investment in oil production. And don’t forget President Richard Nixon’s misguided wage and price controls that led to the rationing of gasoline.

America must transition to cleaner and greener sources of energy that emit less carbon. Diversifying America’s energy portfolio is a national imperative. What Washington must not do is assault the American oil and gas industry as part of that transition during a time of war, sanctions, inflation and broader economic uncertainty.
This crisis requires a pragmatic response from policymakers. More Republicans must seriously engage on climate change and more Democrats must stop their relentless attacks on the American oil and gas industry.
Opinion: Biden and the Saudi Crown Prince rehab project

Opinion: Biden and the Saudi Crown Prince rehab project

Oil is a globally traded commodity. To the extent American oil displaces oil from Russia, Iran, and Venezuela, all the better. Where the supply of oil originates does matter.
When the Biden administration deploys the power of the federal government to kneecap domestic production by, among other things, limiting new leases for drilling , impeding new pipelines in North America, and discouraging financing of fossil fuel projects, that hurts American consumers and manufacturing.
What’s more, relying on authoritarian regimes for oil will lead to higher carbon emissions . American producers employ cleaner production methods while autocratic producers are not as effective or interested in limiting leaks of methane and capturing carbon dioxide.
Understandably, Biden plans to meet the Saudis to open the oil spigot. Better that than the loud whispers of allowing more Iranian and Venezuelan oil to be exported. Like Russia, Iran and Venezuela are criminal, corrupt regimes dedicated to destroying the American-led international order and undermining American power and influence. Better to produce the oil ourselves — and ask both democratic and non-democratic oil suppliers that support the international order to increase production — to put downward pressure on price.
All of this leads back to the ill-considered gas tax holiday.
On the heels of enactment of a landmark infrastructure law, for which Biden and Congress deserve credit, why would the President deplete for three months the revenue generated by the federal gasoline tax dedicated to road, bridge and other infrastructure projects throughout the country?
States will be negatively impacted, too, as non-federal (mostly state) funding is used to match the federal dollars on major infrastructure projects. Yes, the administration claims it will backfill lost gasoline tax revenue for highway projects with other money — money that will be borrowed, adding to an already bloated deficit.

The amount of gasoline tax revenue generated by vehicle mile traveled has been declining for many years , thanks to greater auto fuel efficiency. Maybe the administration and Congress should consider a vehicle miles traveled (VMT) fee for drivers of electric vehicles who pay no gasoline tax but use the roads like the rest of us driving cars with internal combustion engines do? (While they’re at it, why not eliminate the inflationary Trump tariffs, as even one Trump former adviser is calling for .)

Further, there is no guarantee any savings from the gas tax holiday would be passed on to the motoring public. Prices at the pump might rise anyway depending on unforeseen factors further limiting supply which are outside the control of Washington.
The federal gas tax holiday is a terrible idea whose time, once again, has come and gone. Congress must scrap this dumb gimmick and focus on real solutions that seriously address our current predicament.
