Watch: Swimmers rescue deadly shark stranded on Florida beach

September 18, 2023 by www.telegraph.co.uk Leave a Comment

A group of Florida beachgoers rescued a stranded shark by dragging it into the sea as it tried to bite them.

A video posted online shows four men helping a shortfin mako shark back into the water at a beach in Pensacola, Florida’s westernmost city.

The men pulled the shark off the beach by its caudal fins as it tried to free itself.

A woman standing behind the camera yelled: “Look at them freakin’ teeth!”

Mako sharks are endangered. They are not considered among the most dangerous species but dozens of attacks have been recorded by the International Shark Attack File.

At least three people have died from their injuries.

Josh Fey, who was involved in the shark rescue told WKRG, a local television station: “We were sitting on the beach just having a good time and my buddy just said, ‘look out in the water there, man’.

“I saw that fin and I was like, yeah, it was two or three sandbars away from us.

“Eventually it just turned to the left and started coming directly towards the shoreline, and I said, ‘that’s a big shark coming in’.

“And we thought it was chasing some bait or whatnot, but it came all the way to the shoreline and beached itself.”

The mako shark can reach four metres in length and more than 500kg in weight.

The species normally swims in deep water, far from land, and is rarely spotted so close to the shore.

Whale calf euthanized after stranding on Florida beach

September 28, 2023 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

A newborn sperm whale calf has been euthanized after becoming stranded on a beach in Florida.

The young 12.5-foot calf was discovered stuck on a beach near Marineland, around 60 miles south of Jacksonville, on Wednesday afternoon.

Despite the efforts of beachgoers and members of the FWC, the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, Marineland, the Whitney Lab, the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office, St. Johns County Fire Rescue and St. Johns County Beach Services, the whale was determined to be in too poor condition, and the decision to euthanize it was made, local media News4Jax reports.

The reason for the whale’s stranding is still unknown, but the carcass has been taken for a necropsy, which will help elucidate the cause.

Sperm whales can measure up to around 50 feet long, and are found in oceans around the world. They regularly dive to around 2,000 feet for food, spending around 45 minutes below the sea, and have on occasion been recorded spending over an hour at depths of 10,000 feet.

Sperm whales were a major target during the whaling trade, due to the large amount of spermaceti—an oily substance—inside their heads, which they use for sonar. This substance was in demand for use in oil lamps, lubricants and candles, leading to the sperm whale population tanking during the whaling era of the 19th and early 20th century.

Since the International Whaling Commission placed a moratorium on commercial whaling in 1986, the species has managed to recover somewhat, but still faces a number of threats, including entanglement in fishing gear, noise pollution, oil spills and chemicals, and collisions with boats. These factors can contribute to a whale stranding, as they may become disoriented or too weak to get back into the water.

“It is really difficult to say how common vessel strikes are with whales. Whale carcasses typically sink very quickly after death and a heavily-injured whale may quickly leave the area only to die later on,” Sarah Marley, a senior lecturer in ecology at Scotland’s Rural College, told Newsweek . “So unless the impact is directly observed by the ship crew, we don’t always know that a vessel strike has occurred. This is particularly challenging on larger vessels, where it is much harder to see the bow and propellers from on-deck.”

Vessel strikes are an especially bad problem in areas where whale migration paths meet with shipping routes, as the boats may collide with the whales as they come up to breathe.

“The amount shipping is increasing year on year, and whale populations are, at least in some places and species, also increasing as they recover from the impacts of whaling, so this is a growing problem and for some populations will be the primary source of conservation concern (for example, northern right whales),” Luke Rendell, a reader in biology and sea mammal expert at the University of St Andrews in the U.K., told Newsweek .

“While ships will maintain a lookout, this is usually for other vessels and with the support of electronic aids to navigation, to which whales are invisible. Even if ships carried a dedicated observer, it is likely that only in the calmest daylight conditions they would be able to detect animals in time for avoiding action to be taken. At night, or in bad weather, they simply cannot be seen. The size of modern commercial vessels means that in many cases crew will not even notice the impact.”

To prevent vessel strikes, experts urge regulations on ship speeds in areas where whales are often found.

“There is good evidence that reducing vessel speed can both improve the chances of whales escaping and also reduce the severity of injuries. While the most effective would be a global speed limit for ships, the challenges in getting agreement on what it should be and in enforcing it are currently likely to be insurmountable,” Rendell said.

“However, close coordination between maritime authorities, shipping companies, and scientists who map the distribution of whales in space and time can lead to effective management using localized temporary restrictions focused where the risk of strike is highest, that is where and when the distributions of vessels and whales most coincide. More support for research in this area, and more leadership from relevant government authorities, and international bodies like the International Maritime Organisation, is needed to combat this growing problem.”

Florida teen who was struck by lightning while hunting with her dad has died

September 28, 2023 by www.cbsnews.com Leave a Comment

A teenage girl who was struck by lightning while hunting with her father this week died on Thursday, officials said.

Baylee Holbrook, 16, and her dad were hit after lightning struck a tree late Tuesday afternoon, the Putnam County Sheriff’s Office said. Holbrook’s dad lost consciousness. When he woke up, Holbrook wasn’t breathing and was in critical condition.

He called 911 and started providing CPR as emergency personnel responded, officials said. The teen was rushed to a hospital for additional treatment.

“She has proven a fighter and our prayers extend to her, her family and friends,” the sheriff’s office wrote in a Wednesday post on Facebook.

Students gathered at Palatka Junior-Senior High School on Wednesday to pray for Holbrook.

The teen died at the hospital on Thursday morning, the sheriff’s office said. She was surrounded by family.

“We are in prayer for the Holbrook family and reflecting as well as sharing,” Trinity Baptist Church posted on social media on Thursday after the teen’s death.

Holbrook was a varsity cheerleader, CBS affiliate WJAX-TV reported. At a Wednesday prayer rally, friends, teammates and family described Holbrook as being hilarious with a smile that could light up a room. They said the teen loved to hunt, fish and be outdoors.

The Putnam County Sheriff’s Office noted there had been an increase in lightning strikes in the area this week.

“Storms can come quickly and lightning can strike up to 10 miles away from any rainfall,” the sheriff’s office warned.

Records shows that about 20 people are killed in lightning strikes across the country each year, while hundreds more are injured, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Of the 19 deaths reported through September of last year in connection with lightning strikes, four were reported in Florida.

In April, a boat captain was killed in a lightning strike that hit his vessel off the central Florida coast near Orlando.

Boat captain killed by lightning, passenger injured in Florida

April 18, 2023 by www.cbsnews.com Leave a Comment

A boat captain was killed in a lightning strike that hit his vessel off the central Florida coast near Orlando, CBS affiliate WKMG-TV reported.

Officials at the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission identified the captain Monday as 39-year-old Peter Strong, of West Melbourne, according to the station. One passenger who was on board Strong’s boat when the lightning strike happened sustained minor injuries in the incident and was transported to a hospital for treatment.

First responders received a call reporting a vessel that had been struck by lightning while Strong’s boat was out on a stretch of Indian River, a lagoon adjacent to Florida’s Atlantic shore, near the highway U.S. 1, authorities with Brevard County Fire Rescue reportedly said.

Officials will investigate the lightning strike as a boating accident, according to WKMG-TV.

The lightning strike that killed Strong occurred as severe storms hit parts of central Florida, including Brevard County, on Sunday. Even so, fatal incidents involving lightning strikes are relatively rare in the United States.

Formal records indicate that about 20 people are killed in lightning strikes across the country each year, while hundreds more are injured, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Of the 19 deaths reported through September of last year in connection with lightning strikes, four were reported in Florida, with one reported in New Smyrna Beach, another reported in Winter Springs and two more reported in Orlando, the agency’s data shows.

Florida’s death toll linked to lightning strikes was the highest of any U.S. state in 2022, based on the data through September. Washington, D.C., followed with the second-highest number after three people were killed by lightning near the White House last August.

Georgia and Puerto Rico reported two fatalities each from lightning. Alabama, California, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, North Carolina, Ohio and Wyoming each reported one death due to lightning strikes, according to the NOAA.

CBS News contacted Brevard County Fire Rescue and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission to confirm details about the lightning strike that killed Strong, but did not receive immediate replies.
