Weekend Recruiting Rundown: Florida flexes, several Top10 programs add key pledges

August 15, 2022 by 247sports.com Leave a Comment

It was another exciting weekend on the recruiting trail as prospects continue to lock in their college futures before the kickoff of their respective senior seasons.

A couple more quarterbacks came off the board, Florida moved into the Top10 of the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings, Clemson and LSU added to their respective Top10 classes and Alabama, Louisville, Michigan, Ohio State, Texas tech and Tennessee were among the other schools to add top targets.

247Sports gives you the rundown here.

Florida flexes on SEC rivals

The weekend the Gators had on the recruiting trail is one that can help you quickly reinvent a program.

Billy Napier and his first-year Gators staff landed four top targets, all front-seven defenders as they try and revamp a unit that a season ago ranked No. 51 in total defense, a group that struggled to stop the run all year ranking No. 85 nationally in that category. That’s an SEC no no right there!

While this fall Florida will implement defensive coordinator Patrick Toney’s new scheme (No. 22 nationally and No. 11 in scoring defense last year at Louisiana) which should boost the productivity, this program appears to have the calvary on the way.

Top247 defensive lineman Kelby Collins chose Florida over his other finalists Alabama and Georgia. Top247 defensive lineman Kamran James chose the Gators over Georgia and he had a slew of other opportunities including Alabama as well. Top247 defensive lineman Will Norman committed to Florida over LSU and Texas A&M among others. And in the 2024 class, the 247Sports Composite’s No. 2 linebacker Myles Graham chose to play for his father’s alma mater over 41 other scholarships. Graham is commit No. 1 in the rising junior class for Napier and company.

This program is winning many of the right battles on the trail, which obviously makes for a promising future on the field.

Collins is 6-foot-5, 280-pounds and the new jewel of the class. Norman checks in at 6-5, 290 and James is 6-foot-6 1/2, 265-pounds. They join a haul that already includes T.J. Searcy 6-5, 250 and Gavin Hill who is 6-3, 255 giving the Gators five Top247 defensive linemen in the fold to date (compared to two a cycle ago). Holding on to Chris McClellan last cycle and scoring Jamari Lyons gives Florida seven Top247 defensive linemen since Napier took over. This has all the makings to be one of the more ferocious fronts in college football and among that group there is a lot of athleticism, length and position flexibility.

Graham who is an instinctive, incredibly hard-hitting linebacker, could be arriving in Gainesville at the right time to run behind those older defensive linemen that will get some seasoning before he introduces himself to the SEC.

Florida’s class is loaded on the defensive line and they’re not done still pursuing a few other elite targets including guys like five-stars James Smith and Qua Russaw . The receiver class is dynamic and will really bolster another room in need of a talent upgrade. They’re in the process of putting together back-to-back strong classes in the secondary and true freshman linebacker Shemar James (another recruiting win over Alabama and Georgia) looks like he’s going to be one of the SEC’s best linebackers at some point down the road.

Add in the fact Florida unveiled what some are saying are now the best facilities in college football on Sunday and the arrow is rocketing up for the Gators.

Penn State picks up their quarterback

The Nittany Lions No. 11 class now includes West Des Moines (Iowa) Dowling Catholic signal-caller Jaxon Smolik who saw his stock rise this summer which included a strong showing at the Elite 11 Finals in June where he arrived a commit to Tulane at the time. Fortunes are turning for Smolik who saw injury wipe away all but four games of his junior season, but he showed enough promise and ability on tape and a camp performance in State College in July saw James Franklin and his staff prioritize him and ultimately land his pledge. California also offered Smolik late with Notre Dame and Wisconsin two other schools kicking tires.

“I think he’s going to surprise some people before it’s all said and done,” Dowling Catholic head coach Tom Wilson said.

“He can make any throw that you need to make and he’s more mobile and a better athlete than what people give him credit for,” Wilson said. “I think Jaxon has dedicated himself to be the best he can be at this time. I think with everything he’s been through it shows what it all means to him. I think his upside honestly is that he can run a passing game and find your open people. He’s going to work hard at figuring out exactly what they want. He can make every throw and we’re counting on him to do that for us. He’s running an RPO system, he understands he’s running a nice passing attack at the high school level I think. The challenge of college ball will make him elevate himself. I think he’s a competitor as most people are at that position and not easily rattled. He’s always been a cool customer. The competition at Penn State and who they play I think is something he’ll be able to handle.”

Mississippi State lands their quarterback as well

Brentwood (Tenn.) Ravenwood four-star quarterback Chris Parson , who also performed well at the Elite 11 Finals, announced his commitment to Mississippi State on Friday evening during a live broadcast on 247Sports . He chose the Bulldogs over TCU, SMU and Virginia Tech among others.

“He is the most unbelievable leader I’ve been around,” Ravenwood head coach Will Hester said.

Parson is also the best quarterback Hester has been around, throwing for over 2,000 yards, rushing for over 1,000 and racking up 42 total touchdowns in the process as a junior.

Mississippi State ranked No. 4 nationally in passing offense last fall and Parson looks like the guy who can keep Mike Leach’s machine rolling.

Louisville continues to make big moves

Miami (Fla.) Central four-star linebacker Stanquan Clark announced his commitment to Louisville on the 247Sports Channel , choosing the Cardinals over 20 other opportunities. He adds to a haul ranked No. 16 nationally by the 247Sports Composite.

With Clark in the fold, Scott Satterfield and his staff add one of the fastest second-level defenders in the country. He used that speed to rack up 131 tackles as a junior with 24 coming behind the line of scrimmage. He’s a get-home linebacker on blitzes that can run sideline to sideline and also erase mistakes in front of him with those wheels.

John Herron led the charge for the ACC program on the trail in this one, and with Clark committing he makes for eight of the 14 verbals now ranking four-star or better. When looking at Louisville’s classes 2018-2022 combined they only signed nine total four-stars.

Notable commitments around the nation

LSU beat out Texas A&M to add Zachary (La.) High Top247 defensive back Kylin Jackson to the nation’s No. 6 class.

Clemson adds Cambridge (Mass.) Buckingham Browne and Nichols School Top247 athlete Ronan Hanafin to the No. 8 class in the land and they’ll play the 6-3, 210-pound prospect at wide receiver. Several schools loved him at linebacker. Alabama, Notre Dame and Boston College were the other finalists.

Safety is a big need for Ohio State this cycle and they beat out Miami for one of their top targets at the position in Jersey City (NJ) St. Peters Prep four-star Jayden Bonsu . Bonsu is one of the most violent tacklers on film in the 2023 class. He is the third safety in the fold for the Buckeyes alongside fellow four-stars in Malik Hartford and Cedrick Hawkins .

Tennessee held off Georgia to land high-upside cornerback Rickey Gibson out of Alabama. The Vols have the nation’s No. 12 class.

Oklahoma’s No. 7 class saw Mustang (Okla.) High Top247 prospect Jacobe Johnson jump into the mix. The state’s No. 2 player was loved by the Sooners offensive staff but the 6-foot-3, 183-pound Johnson will begin his career at cornerback where he was also coveted by Brent Venables .

Texas Tech added prized in-state defensive lineman Ansel Nedore to its No. 16 ranked recruiting class. Baylor, Houston, SMU, TCU and Texas also offered Nedore.

Michigan added a stud two-way player out of California in Carlsbad (Calif.) High standout Zack Marshall , who at 6-foot-4, 220-pounds will play tight end in Ann Arbor after catching 44 passes for 1,012 yards and nine touchdowns as a junior. He had 31 tackles and three interceptions as well.

Alabama’s offensive line class is coming together, Raymond Pulido out of Apple Valley (Calif.) High the latest to jump in. The Crimson Tide have the No. 1 class in America.

New Auburn cornerback commit JC Hart ran sub 4.4 in camp for the Tigers and has the length coveted at the position.

San Francisco (Calif.) Sacred Heart linebacker Jerry Mixon gave his verbal to Oregon on the 247Sports YouTube Channel adding to a class ranked No. 15 nationally.

Memphis (Tenn.) Briarcrest athlete Max Carroll committed to TCU over the weekend on the 247Sports platform adding to 247Sports No. 21 recruiting class.

Missouri added linebacker Brayshawn Littlejohn out of Gaffney (SC) High who had 87 tackles including 20 stops for loss as a junior.

Dan Lanning and the Ducks recruiting towards having a potent offense

August 15, 2022 by 247sports.com Leave a Comment

Dan Lanning may have arrived at Oregon as this defensive mind fresh off helping Georgia win a National Championship as their coordinator, but holding down the corner office in Eugene, he has his sights set on fielding a potent offense as well.

New tight end commit Kenyon Sadiq gets the Ducks another step closer.

The Top247 recruit out of Idaho Falls (ID) Skyline Senior announced his pledge to Oregon on Monday over his other finalists in Iowa State, Michigan, Stanford and Washington.

The 6-foot-3, 220-pound Sadiq had a breakout junior year catching 78 passes for 1,162 yards and 19 touchdowns. He added another two rushing scores and picked off two passes while utilized on defense.

Sadiq is going to blossom into a 235-pound mismatch, a prospect with plus speed, terrific ball skills that offensive coordinator Kenny Dillingham and company will be able to detach and move around the offense.

Tight end is a position of need for Oregon in the 2023 cycle after not taking one in 2022. Terrerance Ferguson is certainly a player the Ducks can count on this year but they need more difference-makers in the room moving forward and Sadiq has the traits to evolve into one of the nation’s best at the position.

Tabbed by the Top247 as the nation’s No. 11 athlete and No. 149 prospect overall, Sadiq joins an Oregon class that now ranks No. 14 nationally per the 247Sports , second in the Pac 12 just behind USC. It’s a haul highlighted by the offensive skill talented the Ducks are bringing in.

You’re not going to find many more receiver/tight end combinations than Sadiq alongside Top247 five-star Jurrion Dickey who is one of the more physically dominant, Alpha wide outs in the class and Top247 receiver Ashton Cozart who can absolutely fly.

One of the most productive backs in America is also in the fold in Dante Dowdell who Lanning and company plucked out of Mississippi. As a junior Dowdell rushed for 2,555 yards and 28 touchdowns.

Of course the class jewel is five-star quarterback Dante Moore , the No. 2 overall prospect in the Top247 who led Detroit King to a state championship as a junior before earning our Alpha Dog honors at this past summer’s Elite 11 event throwing alongside just about every other signal-caller at the position.

Sadiq has every-down capability as a tight end, bringing the toughness coveted to also block around the line of scrimmage.

Receiver and tight end was one of the biggest needs for Lanning and Oregon when this new staff arrived, and they’re addressing it here in the 2023 cycle with high-caliber prospects.

Other programs to offer Sadiq included Arizona, Boise State, Oklahoma State, Texas, Utah and West Virginia. Oregon is looking to finish with the No. 1 class in the Pac 12 for a fifth cycle in a row.

LSU’s Myles Brennan ends football career: QB battle down to two as sixth-year senior leaves program

August 15, 2022 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

USATSI

LSU quarterback Myles Brennan has opted to retire from football, the program announced on Monday. Brennan, a sixth-year senior, was immersed in a three-way summer battle with Arizona State transfer Jayden Daniels and redshirt freshman Garrett Nussmeier for the starting job under center.

“We are grateful to Myles for everything he has done for LSU football,” LSU coach Brian Kelly said in a statement. “Myles is a great leader who has made a tremendous impact on this program and he has earned the respect of everyone here through his commitment and love for LSU.”

Brennan was a promising recruit in the class of 2017, but unfortunate circumstances kept him from ever truly being cemented as the starter for the Tigers. The Mississippi native backed up Joe Burrow for two seasons and was poised to be the full-time starter in 2020, but he suffered an injury just three games into the season. In 2021, Brennan again had a shot to earn the starting job but broke his arm off the field, which kept him out for the entirety of the season.

With Brennan gone, the Tigers are down to Daniels and Nussmeier battling it out for the starting nod. Daniels has thrown for more than 6,000 yards and rushed for nearly 1,300 in his collegiate career, while Nussmeier completed 50.9% of his passes for 329 yards and two touchdowns as a freshman.

A snakebitten career

Expectations were high when Brennan made his way to campus as a signature part of Ed Orgeron’s first full recruiting class in Baton Rouge. Ranked as the No. 4 pro-style passer by 247Sports, Brennan threw for more than 15,000 yards at St. Stanislaus, a high school about an hour from New Orleans. He waited in line behind Burrow before getting his chance, but suffered a brutal abdominal injury during his third start during the pandemic-shortened season.

Incredibly, his 2021 injury — a broken arm as a result of a freak accident while fishing — was even unluckier. He entered the transfer portal for a period in November, but ultimately returned to campus after the coaching change from Orgeron to Kelly.

Brennan showed real promise, completing 60.2% of his passes for 1,712 yards passing and 13 touchdowns in 20 career games. He was incredible in his first three games for the Tigers in 2020, throwing for 1,112 yards and 11 touchdowns. However, the hit he took against Missouri that injured his midsection ended up as the last play of his football career.

An uneasy competition

LSU’s quarterback play has been a mixed bag since Burrow led the Tigers to the national championship in 2019. After Brennan’s injury, LSU had to throw freshman Max Johnson to the wolves to close out the 2020 season. He played much better during a breakout year in 2021, but opted to transfer to division rival Texas A&M instead.

Now, LSU has to choose from a pair of quarterbacks who have never started in the SEC. Daniels took a step as a junior at Arizona State, completing 65.4% of his passes for rushing for 710 yards, but his 10-10 touchdown-to-interception ratio left plenty to be desired. He will have to speed up his processing time at LSU in order to make up for the challenge of playing against aggressive SEC West defensive backs.

Nussmeier has more natural arm talent than Daniels, but made plenty of freshman mistakes. He was thrust into major action against Arkansas last season and threw a backbreaking interception that set up a game-winning field goal for the Hogs. Complicating matters is that Nussmeier missed the first scrimmage with an ankle injury.

Entering his first season with the program, Kelly has a difficult decision ahead of him as he chooses between experience and potential.

AP Top 25 reactions: Clemson overrated, Penn State underrated in preseason college football rankings

August 15, 2022 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

USA Today Sports Images

The 2022 Preseason AP Top 25 was released on Monday, and outside of an expected group at the top — namely, Alabama , Ohio State and Georgia — the rest of the poll was a chaotic mix. For example: Clemson , No. 14 in the final AP Top 25 of the 2021 season, starts 2022 at No. 4. Meanwhile, Texas A&M — unranked in the AP poll at the end of last season — begins this year at No. 6 thanks to coach Jimbo Fisher’s relentless recruiting efforts and high expectations.

Scattered throughout the rest of the preseason AP Top 25 are teams with something to prove. No. 7 Utah , No. 13 NC State , No. 20 Kentucky and No. 24 Houston are just some of the teams looking to show that they’re capable of taking that next step over the course of the season.

Ultimately, the preseason poll is just a starting point. Where these teams end up after the College Football Playoff National Championship is played is anyone’s guess. Still, it wouldn’t be offseason fodder without parsing through the grave injustices scattered throughout the first poll of the season.

Here are a handful of teams that are either overrated or underrated in the first list.

Overrated: Clemson (No. 4)

With perhaps the best defense in the nation coming back, along with a few promising pieces on offense, it’s fair to believe that a disappointing three-loss campaign in 2021 was simply a blip for one of the most consistent programs in college football. But No. 4 in the country? That’s a little much.

The Tigers are starting from scratch at two key coaching positions following the departures of offensive coordinator Tony Elliott and defensive coordinator Brent Venables — both of whom served served in their roles since 2015 — to Virginia and Oklahoma , respectively. Clemson promoted internally, with QBs coach Brandon Streeter and senior defensive assistant Wes Goodwin taking over those vacancies. However, there’s no guarantee it will be smooth sailing for two coaches who have never called plays at the FBS level.

Additionally, Clemson has a big question mark at quarterback after DJ Uiagalelei ranked last among 15 qualified ACC quarterbacks in passing efficiency last year. Freshman Cade Klubnik could push for playing time, but it’s not clear yet if he’s the Deshaun Watson or Trevor Lawrence type to help Clemson reach national contention.

Underrated: Houston (No. 24)

After losing to Texas Tech in Week 1 last season, all Houston did was blast through the last 11 regular-season games on the schedule and beat Auburn in the Birmingham Bowl. Oh, and by the way, the Cougars return the vast majority of contributors on both sides of the ball.

Quarterback Clayton Tune and wide receiver Nathaniel “Tank” Dell are names you will soon hear in NFL Draft circles, and coach Dana Holgorsen bolstered the room with four Power Five receiver transfers. Derek Parish and promising young star Chidozie Nwankwo will continue what has quickly become a dominant run of defensive linemen.

Perhaps the only spot for concern comes at running back with Alton McCaskill likely out for the season with an ACL tear, but the Cougars can slot Power Five transfers Ta’Zhawn Henry and Brandon Campbell in the backfield immediately. There aren’t many teams in The American that look like Houston. The Coogs have a legitimate chance to go on a Cincinnati-like run.

Overrated: Pittsburgh (No. 17)

Last season, Pitt boasted one of the most impressive collections of passing game personnel in college football. Quarterback Kenny Pickett was a Heisman finalist, wide receiver Jordan Addison won the Biletnikoff Award, Brennan Marion excelled as a first-year receivers coach and offensive coordinator Mark Whipple tied everything together masterfully. It’s no wonder the group won PItt’s first ACC championship in program history.

Unfortunately, all four of those dynamic players and coaches are gone. USC transfer quarterback Kedon Slovis should bring consistency to the position, and the defense could be even better with three players returning after posting at least 10 tackles for loss last season. However, an 11-3 campaign in 2021 was only good enough to earn Pitt a No. 13 postseason ranking. There’s little chance Pitt’s offense will be dynamic enough without the losses to maintain a top-20 performance.

Underrated: Penn State (NR)

After starting last season 5-0, Penn State fell apart down the stretch with quarterback Sean Clifford battling through nagging injuries. However, the five regular-season losses were all within five points, and they masked what should once again be a legitimate Big Ten East contender in 2022.

Clifford showed some major signs of growth before suffering his injury and is back for an extra year of eligibility. Even better, the Nittany Lions have some insurance, as five-star quarterback Drew Allar — the former No. 1 quarterback in the Top247 rankings — will undoubtedly push for playing time. Additionally, No. 1 running back Nick Singleton gives Penn State a great chance to fix its anemic running game.

If Penn State can continue its recent run of dynamic defensive performances under new coordinator Manny Diaz, the sky’s the limit for this program in 2022. Certainly, that upside deserves better than to be on the outside looking in for the AP Top 25.

AP Top 25 poll: Alabama, Ohio State, Georgia headline college football rankings ahead of 2022 season

August 15, 2022 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

USATSI

The 2022 college football season is less than two weeks away, and now we know which title contender enters the season with the coveted No. 1 ranking. The Preseason AP Top 25 was released on Monday with Alabama beginning the season as the top team in the country for the fifth time in the last seven years. The Crimson Tide boast the reigning Heisman Trophy winner in Bryce Young , star EDGE threat Will Anderson Jr . and motivation to get back to the top of the college football world after falling to Georgia in the national title game in January.

Ohio State comes in at No. 2 after missing the College Football Playoff last season. The Buckeyes are led by star quarterback C.J. Stroud and wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba — perhaps the top wide receiver in the country. The biggest question facing coach Ryan Day’s squad is on defense, though he poached defensive coordinator Jim Knowles away from Oklahoma State to fix the issues that plagued the team last season.

Defending national champion Georgia, led by quarterback Stetson Bennett IV, enters the season in the No. 3 spot. The key question facing the Bulldogs surrounds its defense, which lost five players in the first round of the 2022 NFL Draft . Coach Kirby Smart has transformed the program into a recruiting power, but that will be tested this year after losing a total of 15 players to the next level. Clemson jumped from No. 14 in the final AP Top 25 of 2022 to No. 4 entering this season, while Notre Dame rounded out the top five.

Here’s a look at the full top 25 (first-place votes in parenthesis):
