Texas TikTok star lands role on George Lopez’s new show ‘Lopez Vs. Lopez’

August 18, 2022 by www.chron.com Leave a Comment

A tiny Texas TikTok star will soon hit our television screens after booking a role in George Lopez’s new show, Lopez V. Lopez . Brice Gonzalez from the Enkyboys announced that he was working with the comedian in an Instagram video on Monday, August 15. His father, Randy, confirmed the show to MySA.

“I’m so happy to be here doing this show,” Brice told MySA via email. “I never thought I would be doing a show, even though I have always wanted to and now I’m actually doing it and I’m so happy. It feels good to be doing this! Thank you, God, for giving me this opportunity!”

Randy and his son Brice are known for creating hilarious TikTok videos together. The pair have blown up since they started their TikTok journey together in November 2019, appearing on Good Morning America and being highlighted in multiple media outlets like BuzzFeed and Yahoo Lifestyle. The duo has more than 15.3 million followers on TikTok.

The fame rose, even more, after Brice landed a role in Eva Longoria’s Flamin’ Hot project. Brice will play one of the sons of the main character of the movie about Richard Montañez, the Frito-Lay janitor who says he cooked up Flamin’ Hot Cheetos in his home kitchen. The film is set to be released sometime in 2022, according to movieinsider.com.

For his most recent gig, Brice said he’s in California for the next two weeks to work with Lopez. Brice’s parents told MySA that he was cast as the grandson of George and son of Mayan, George’s daughter on the show and in real life. He’ll be starring alongside George and Mayan, as well as Selenis Leyva and Matt Shively.

“It is a great feeling to see our son doing incredible things in the industry with such icons,” Kimberly and Randy, Brice’s parents, said. “Growing up being a huge fan of George Lopez and now Brice actually working with George and his daughter and creating friendships is just a dream come true! We are just so happy for him and truly blessed!”

According to Deadline, Lopez Vs. Lopez is a working-class family comedy about dysfunction, reconnection, and all the pain and joy in between. NBC picked up the show pilot in October 2021 after a pilot order in June. No decision has been made as to whether it will launch in the fall or midseason.

Jennifer Lopez bonding with Ben Affleck, Jennifer Garner’s kids ahead of wedding bash

August 18, 2022 by www.thenews.com.pk Leave a Comment

Jennifer Lopez is trying to be the best version of herself when it comes to the kids of her hubby Ben Affleck.

The Marry Me star has been spending quality time with her step kids as she gears up to exchange her wedding vows again with the Gone Girl actor.

Lopez was recently spotted with Affleck’s eldest daughter Violet in New York and even took his kids to a Broadway play earlier this week.

A source told Hollywood Life that JLo even introduced Violet, Seraphina and Samuel, whom Affleck shares with ex-wife Jennifer Garner, to her family.

“J.Lo and Ben were able to kill two birds with one stone by bringing the kids with them to NYC for Ben’s 50th birthday,” the insider told the outlet.

“Ben’s children were able to spend time with their dad, which was really important to him and her children, Max and Emme, whom she shares with ex Marc Anthony, were able to do the same,” the insider continued.

“Aside from the birthday festivities, they all needed to take care of some last-minute wedding-related tasks,” the insider spoke of the lovebirds upcoming three-day wedding bash.

“The kids all needed to be fitted for the upcoming wedding and she needed some alterations to her gown done, as well,” the outlet shared.

“J.Lo took the kids out without him to the Broadway play and she took Violet shopping at Bergdorf’s because she feels those are important things for the kids to experience.

“J.Lo also wanted to show the kids where she grew up and introduce them to some of her family members in NYC. It is her turf and she loves it there,” the source said.

Jennifer Lopez takes her and Ben Affleck’s kids to Broadway performance of ‘Into the Wild’

After spending an exotic honeymoon in Paris, Jennifer Lopez and Ben Affleck are set to host a lavish wedding ceremony in Georgia.

Ahead of their three-day wedding festivities, the Marry Me star, 52, decided to spend some quality time with her expanded time.

J.Lo made a rare appearance in New York City this week where she was joined by her children, 14-year-old twins Emme and Max, as well as hubby Affleck’s eldest two kids, Violet, 16, and Seraphina, 13, to a showing of Broadway’s Into the Woods.

The glam diva caused a stir among the audience as she arrived a full 20 minutes late for the performance.

“The entire audience turned to watch,” an audience member told the media outlet, adding, she “kept dancing in her seat — even to ballads, and applauding loudly with her hands up over her head.”

Lopez looked incredible in a head-to-toe pink and lavender sequins gown.

Affleck and Lopez are having a big, lavish wedding celebration this weekend, one month after tying the knot in Las Vegas.

The three-day “intimate celebration for family and friends” is expected to begin with a rehearsal dinner on Friday, the ceremony on Saturday, and a barbecue and picnic on Sunday.

Why Nob Hill’s Tahona Mercado will never carry celebrity-owned tequila

August 18, 2022 by www.sfgate.com Leave a Comment

Steven Sadri often recalls a recurring problem from years ago when he lived in Nob Hill. Whenever he needed high-quality Mexican products, he often struggled to find them nearby. Once Sadri and his wife, Emily Sadri, started thinking about San Francisco’s cityscape, they realized that it lacked a Mexican specialty store.

“Why isn’t there a place to pick up fresh heirloom masa made in Oaxaca? Why isn’t there a place to pick up hand-pressed flour tortillas? These were questions we wanted to answer,” Steven said.

So they created their own store. The couple founded Tahona Mercado at the corner of Leavenworth and Sacramento streets last August. Since opening the Mexicatessen, Tahona Mercado has stayed true to its ethos of presenting a curated list of Mexican foods made by small, local Bay Area businesses, as well as imported goods from south of the border.

Artisan snacks and rare bottles

Stepping inside the tiny storefront, customers are met with a treasure trove of artisan products from Bay Area makers that includes the popular spicy salsa macha from Oakland-based Kuali , crickets from Don Bugito , hand-cut tortilla chips from La Cocina vendor Estrellita’s Snacks , and flour tortillas by Xulo .

A grab-and-go fridge is filled with salty queso cotija, rich mole and fresh masa made with blue and purple heirloom corn by Bolita . Tahona Mercado doesn’t have a kitchen, yet its deli counter offers a small but mighty menu of flavorful tacos, quesadillas and tortas. The latter is prepared with carnitas from Bay Area food truck, Dos Raicez , and bolillos from Norte 54 .

“We love to stock and support local so we can show off all of the incredible products that are available in the Bay Area,” Emily Sadri said.

What Tahona Mercado is best known for, though, is its selection of tequila, rum, gin, whiskey and exclusive bottles of mezcal, which are mostly sourced from the Mexican states of Oaxaca and Durango. This month, Steven said Tahona Mercado has mezcal by 5 Sentidos, which is produced in the state of Puebla. He described the specialty mezcal as a batch made from a rare agave plant that helps deliver a flavor he likens to strawberry shortcake ice cream bars.

There’s also a shelf dedicated to hard-to-find Mexican wines from Guanajuato, San Luis Potosi, Coahuila and Mexico’s wine region , Valle de Guadalupe. Steven, who travels to Mexico at least twice a year, is the expert behind the array of wines that Tahona Mercado carries and frequently guides customers through the rare bottle selections. Among the options is a Sadri favorite: Bruma wine by winemaker Lourdes “Lulu” Martinez Ojeda, who produces wines on the same property as the renowned Fauna restaurant in Baja California.

The opening of Tahona Mercado has created an additional stage for many Bay Area brands to cast a wider net — especially as several of the aforementioned items are only available online, at weekly farmers markets or at sporadic pop-up events. But housing this curated selection of Mexican goods works twofold, Emily said.

“We’ve been seeking out a lot of these vendors since we had the idea of creating this store,” she said. “I’ve followed them on Instagram since their inception. I think [Tahona Mercado] is a platform, but also, the incredible popularity and beautiful flavor profiles [of these brands] bring people to us. It’s a mutual flow.”

A devotion to the craft

Running a store like Tahona Mercado hasn’t come without its fair share of hurdles, particularly when it comes to prices. It’s not rare for some customers to visit the store and have a misplaced expectation of what a product should cost. It comes with the territory of running the store, Steven admitted.

“I think that there has been some difficulty with people’s misconceptions of what the price of Mexican food or the price of creating Mexican food should be,” he said. “If we think about how long it takes somebody to make homemade pasta and we compare that to the work that it takes to make homemade tortillas from scratch, including grinding the corn, there shouldn’t be a difference in pricing. Both are beautiful products in their own way.”

And if you expect to find celebrity-owned tequila like E. Cuarenta Tequila , Casamigos or 818, just turn around. You won’t find them here. Steven said Tahona Mercado will never carry those brands because they’re mass-produced. But, more importantly, they lack the “wide diversity and range of flavors” that he and Emily have worked diligently to showcase through the brands they carry.

“What we’re really trying to do is create a platform for these smaller producers who are making their family’s recipes the same way that they have for generations,” Steven added. “A lot of these families don’t have huge investment marketing platforms or celebrities associated with their brands to help sell their products. So, for us, it’s important to be the voice for these smaller producers.”

When a customer asks about a celebrity-linked brand, Emily or Steven simply recommend the closest international variety they believe highlights similar tasting notes — albeit with “better production methods.”

‘Why not a Tahona Mercado in Nob Hill?’

The Bay Area has many established Mexican grocery stores, like the mini-chain Chavez Supermarket, La Hacienda Market and Mi Tierra Foods, among others, that stock their shelves with giant national brands. And while there isn’t anything innately wrong with those options, it’s not a shared goal at Tahona Mercado. Instead, the Sadris hope that Tahona Mercado’s focus on the artisan products by small producers helps showcase a devotion to the craft.

Before opening Tahona Mercado, Steven and Emily had a short work stint at chef Gabriela Camara’s seminal but now closed Cala restaurant in Hayes Valley. A year later in 2018, the couple moved to San Diego, where they partnered with the owner of a modern Mexican restaurant, Tahona . Steven, who was a bartender at Cala, led the mezcal tastings, and Emily, who was a manager at Cala, helped run the front of the house. Tahona restaurant has since opened more locations in Mexican towns Ensenada and Tijuana.

When the pandemic hit in 2020, Steven said that the flagship Tahona location had to reconfigure its business strategy to keep its lights on. The restaurant began to offer cocktail kits to go and virtual mezcal tastings that the Sadris said eventually picked up traction. By the time 2021 rolled in, the couple had their mind set on opening a retail business where they could continue to link and educate customers on quality agave spirits, while also finding a solution to the scarcity of specialty Mexican stores that nagged at the couple years earlier. And they are working toward opening a second Tahona Mercado in National City, Calif.

Every now and then, customers ask the Sadris why they didn’t open Tahona Mercado in a different San Francisco neighborhood like the Mission instead of Nob Hill. Steven smiles and tells them, “Why not a Tahona Mercado in Nob Hill?”

“Great Mexican food can exist in any neighborhood,” he said. “Chinese food doesn’t have to be relegated to only Chinatown or Korean food to Koreatown. We found a beautiful location. We fully embrace it because people should know about these special ingredients.”

Tahona Mercado , 1168 Leavenworth St., San Francisco. Open Tuesday through Friday, noon-8 p.m., and Saturday, 11 a.m-7 p.m.

Editor’s note: This article was corrected at 10:12 a.m., Aug. 18, to correct information on Tahona Mercado’s carnitas, which are from Dos Raîcez.

From ‘She-Hulk’ to JLo, variety’s key for director Kat Coiro

With high expectations and a sprawling scope of storytelling, directing anything in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, would seem daunting. For Kat Coiro, an executive producer and director on the series “ She-Hulk: Attorney at Law, ” it was only scary before Tatiana Maslany was cast in the lead role.

“As soon as the idea of Tatiana came into the sphere of the show and then she actually auditioned for us, all the fear went out the window. I said, ‘Oh, we’ve got her.’ She is an actress who understands things on an intellectual macro level, but then also understands things on a very emotional, engaged level. And we needed somebody with that intelligence … vulnerability,” said Coiro, who directed six of the show’s nine episodes and worked closely with writer Jessica Gao.

While it’s noteworthy that the show’s filmmakers are female, at San Diego’s International Comic-Con in July, Maslany said she was more drawn to working with talented people behind the camera, who happened to be women.

“I’m just excited that I get to work with people who I’m like, ‘You’re (expletive) cool,’ you know what I mean?”

In “She-Hulk,” premiering Thursday, Maslany plays Jennifer Walters, an attorney to the superhuman who, like her cousin Bruce Banner — played by Mark Ruffalo — turns into a Hulk when she gets angry. The series, with its legal cases and winky commentary, is different than other Marvel projects.

To prepare, Coiro, who was already a fan of the Marvel movies, revisited each title.

“After I got the job, I sat down and I watched everything in chronological order. And it was pretty revelatory because I realized that unlike anything that has ever been done before, the MCU is this ever-evolving organism that kind of draws inspiration from the audience and from what fans want,” Coiro said. “When you look, for example, at the evolution of ‘Thor,’ it starts out pretty serious. And now we are in, you know, the most recent installment (“Thor: Love and Thunder”) that is just so goofy and out there. And I think that has a lot to do with feedback and with listening to the fans.

“On ‘She-Hulk,’ we have this character who is very self-aware and because there is a meta level to the show, we get to directly engage with fans and play around with the idea that like, ‘We know Twitter. You’re out there, we know you’re listening.’”

Coiro, who recently directed Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson in the rom-com “Marry Me,” says “She-Hulk” was appealing because she prides herself on her “eclectic resume.”

“I always look to Rob Reiner during the time when he did ‘Misery’ and ‘The Princess Bride’ and ‘Spinal Tap’ and ‘Stand By Me,’ and I go, ‘Those are so wildly different but they all have themes about what it means to be a human being and these very elemental thematic undertones.’ That’s what excites me rather than one genre or one way of storytelling.”

Upcoming projects include executive producing and directing two episodes of the YA fantasy series “The Spiderwick Chronicles” for Disney+ (based on the book series of the same name), and signing on to helm a buddy action, comedy movie called “Foreign Relations” starring Nick Jonas and Glen Powell.

“Nick saw ‘Marry Me,’ and the story is that he called Glen and said, ‘You’ve got to check out ‘Marry Me.’ And they fell in love with the film. They called me and they said, ‘Do you want to direct this?’ We went out and sold it to Amazon. I’m so excited to work with them because they are just this charismatic duo.”

Coiro will also adapt the Liane Moriarty novel “The Husband’s Secret” for the big screen, which she describes as “a sexy murder mystery thriller that is a throwback to those big, cinematic films of the ‘80s and ’90s.”

With movie star looks herself, it should come as no surprise that Coiro began her career in showbiz as an actor, but she quickly became intrigued with everybody’s jobs behind the scenes.

“I saw the directors and the producers and the writers and the cinematographers and I very quickly changed lanes and stopped acting and started directing. It’s when I finally felt like I had arrived in the place I was meant to be. I was able to use the strengths that I had and tell the stories the way that I wanted to tell them.”
