Liz Cheney Raised Nearly $1 Million From Texas, Including Donations From George Bush And Karl Rove | The Daily Wire

August 16, 2022 by www.dailywire.com Leave a Comment

Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) raised nearly $1 million from Texas for her primary re-election battle, including donations from former President George W. Bush and Karl Rove.

The total exceeded donations for Cheney from all states except California and surpassed campaign funds raised from her own state, according to The Houston Chronicle.

Cheney’s list of Lone Star State donors included maximum gifts of $2,900 each from Bush and Rove. In total, the congresswoman raised approximately $950,000 from Texans as part of her $15 million in total funds brought in to defend against her Trump-backed competitor.

Despite the massive out-of-state support Cheney has received, the anti-Trump incumbent faces a likely loss against attorney Harriet Hageman.

Hageman, endorsed by former President Donald Trump, has raised a reported $4.3 million in comparison, according to Federal Election Commission records. In Wyoming, Hageman has raised $940,000 compared to Cheney’s $386,000.

In addition to large-scale outside funding, Cheney has garnered the support of two House Democrats who have asked Wyoming members of their party to temporarily switch parties to vote for Cheney during the August 16 primary.

Reps. Tom Malinowski (D-NJ) and Dean Phillips (D-MN) both appeared in online ads last week expressing their support for Cheney’s re-election efforts.

“Liz Cheney and I don’t agree on everything,” Malinowski said in a Facebook ad. “But we’re on the same side today, fighting for a country where we settle our differences by voting, not violence.”

“Wyoming Democrats can put country over party too by registering to vote for her in the Republican primary,” he added.

Cheney also released a video ad on Twitter ahead of the primary from former Vice President Dick Cheney.

“In our nation’s 246-year history there has never been an individual who is a greater threat to our Republic than Donald Trump,” he claimed in the ad. “He tried to steal the last election using lies and violence to keep himself in power after the voters had rejected him. He is a coward. A real man wouldn’t lie to his supporters. He lost his election, and he lost big.”

The Wyoming congresswoman was one of 10 House Republicans to vote for Trump’s impeachment following the events of January 6, 2021. She has also served on House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s (D-CA) House select committee investigating the Capitol riot.

Cheney is the last of the 10 Republicans who supported impeachment to face a primary. Rep. Adam Kinzinger (R-IL) announced his plans to retire from Congress rather than face a Trump-backed challenger in a primary battle.

Rep. Anthony Gonzalez (R-OH) also announced his plans to step down from Congress in September in a battle that saw former Trump aide Max Miller challenging him. Rep. John Katko (R-NY) and Rep. Fred Upton (R-MI) likewise decided not to run for re-election.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler (R-WA) lost her 3rd district battle against primary challenger Joe Kent in close race that was decided by less than one percentage point.

Rep. Peter Meijer (R-MI) also lost in his primary, falling to Trump-endorsed John Gibbs. Rep. Tom Rice (R-SC) also lost his primary in June, falling to Russell Fry.

Of the 10 House Republicans who voted to impeach Trump, only Rep. David Valadao (R-CA) and Rep. Dan Newhouse (R-WA) have won in their primaries.

Police: Florida Airport Baggage Handler Caught Stealing Luggage by Apple AirTag Tracker

August 16, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Apple’s AirTag tracking devices were recently used to help police arrest a baggage handler who stole luggage from passengers at an airport in Florida.

Apple Insider reports that Apple’s AirTag tracking devices have helped police arrest an airport baggage handler who stole luggage from passengers at Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport located in Florida. Police recovered more than $15,000 in jewelry and other items. The Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office revealed last week that it had conducted an investigation into suspicious activity at the Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport after the sheriff’s Airport Security Unit were alerted to thefts relating to stolen luggage handled by an employee.

The baggage handler, an airline subcontractor named Giovanni De Luca, faces two counts of grand theft, the Sheriff’s Office stated. The investigation started in July after a traveler discovered that her luggage had not arrived at her destination. The luggage contained items worth more than $1,600 and had gone missing during her trip.

The traveler had placed an AirTag in her suitcase and as a result, had a record of the locations that it had traveled to. She was able to see that the AirTag was last active in the area of Kathy Court in Mary Esther, Florida. Police cross-referenced employees who lived in the area and found De Luca.

After meeting De Luca at his home, he admitted to going through the passenger’s suitcases for items and removing the AirTag. Police were able to retrieve other items from another stolen suitcase worth more than $15,000.

“This arrest is an example of excellent teamwork by our Airport Security unit, our investigators, and the airport to find the person responsible for these thefts and make sure he is held responsible,” said Sheriff Eric Aden.

This is a nice change of pace from how AirTag’s have been used in the past. Breitbart News has previously reported that criminals were using AirTag tracking devices produced by Apple to aid in the theft of vehicles.

In a blog post, investigators with the York Regional Police Auto and Cargo Theft Unit warned residents that they have “identified a new method being used by thieves to track and steal high-end vehicles” in the area.

The blog post states:

Since September 2021, officers have investigated five incidents where suspects have placed small tracking devices on high-end vehicles so they can later locate and steal them. Brand name ‘air tags’ are placed in out-of-sight areas of the target vehicles when they are parked in public places like malls or parking lots. Thieves then track the targeted vehicles to the victim’s residence, where they are stolen from the driveway.

Suspects have reportedly been placing the AirTags in “out of sight” areas of cars such as the inside of gas caps or various other crevices. After following their targets home, the criminals are reportedly able to hack the ignition of the vehicles with an electronic device “typically used by mechanics to reprogram the factory setting” before stealing the car from the driveway of its owner.

Father’s fury at murderer who rolled his son into the bush ‘like some animal’

August 16, 2022 by www.stuff.co.nz Leave a Comment

A man who gunned down a perceived rival on a winding, bush-clad Coromandel highway has been jailed for 14 years – and treated to a harsh sendoff from court.

“Rot, you fat f…,” yelled the family of Bayden Williams to Adrian Phillips as he was ushered from a courtroom in Hamilton on Tuesday.

Following an almost six-week trial in the High Court at Hamilton earlier this year, Adrian Reginald George Phillips, 24, was found guilty of murdering Bayden Williams, 20.

Williams was found dead on the side of the Kopu-Hikuai Rd on the Coromandel Peninsula on the evening of Wednesday, August 5, 2020.

The jury found Phillips had deliberately rammed Williams’ vehicle off a twisting stretch of road. When Williams attempted to climb up a bank back to the roadside, about 7pm that night, Phillips fatally injured him by shooting him three times – in the thigh, shoulder and, finally, his head – with a shotgun.

Phillips’ defence case, led by Ron Mansfield, QC, was that he had fired in self-defence because he believed Williams was advancing on him with a knife. However, the jury agreed with the Crown case, led by Rebecca Mann and Jacinda Hamilton, that Phillips was in a murderous rage when he opened fire and had effectively ambushed Williams on the dark, twisting highway.

There had been bad blood between Phillips and Williams and his father, Lance Williams. The two families had been linked by a pair of twin sisters, one of whom was Phillips’ partner, the other the former partner of Williams – and with whom he had a son, Loki. The pair were rekindling a relationship at the time he was killed.

Phillips returned to the High Court at Hamilton on Wednesday for his sentencing before Justice Melanie Harland.

Lance Williams was also there, and he and his wife, Tracy, and brother Josh spoke of their anguish at hearing the manner of Bayden Williams’ death.

Lance Williams was evidently still furious at the man who killed his son “and rolled him into the bush like some animal”.

Seeing his son in a body bag “with one side of his face blown off” was an image that would always stay with him.

“Had I known you were capable of such a brutal act … I would never have opened my door to you.”

Tracy Williams told Phillips her son was “a people pleaser – a humble dude who made everyone welcome, as he did with you.

“He was such a spark of light in our lives, and you have snuffed him out.”

Josh Williams had a blunt assessment of the situation: “You have broken the hearts of many … I hope your time in prison is miserable with every waking moment.”

Mansfield said the actions of Phillips reflected a failure of the mental health system. His client had suffered horrific injuries in a fuel explosion about a year and a half before the shooting, and he had subsequently been assaulted by Lance and Bayden Williams in a confrontation in Tairua earlier that year.

“The consequences are sadly real. While the physical injuries may have healed, the emotional injuries remained real and raw.”

His issues “had not been adequately identified and treated. If they were, we would not be here today.”

In her submissions, Hamilton said Phillips “chose to put his desire for revenge to the fore. He armed himself … and knowing his capacity for anger he engineered a confrontation likely to trigger him[self].

“This offending is not the result of a mental illness. It is the result of the actions of a vengeful and angry man.”

Justice Harland described Phillips’ decision to intercept Williams’ car on the road as “an impulsive and irrational decision … You were not intending to have a civilised discussion to clear the air between you.”

She stopped short of describing the murder as premeditated, however.

Phillips’ case was comparable to other recent killers, including that of “stop-go” murderer Quentin Winders and the case of Raglan tourist murderer Mark Garson .

Hamilton had sought a minimum period of imprisonment of 15-and-a-half years. Mansfield asked for a 10-year minimum.

Phillips had tendered a letter to the court “offering my wholehearted apology … for what happened”.

“I will never forgive myself for what I did.”

Before the trial, Phillips had pleaded guilty to charges of unlawful possession of a shotgun and ammunition, and the judge sentenced him to a concurrent six months for those offences.

AI Shows the Way: Seoul Robotics Helps Cars Move, Park on Their Own

August 16, 2022 by blogs.nvidia.com Leave a Comment

Imagine driving a car — one without self-driving capabilities — to a mall, airport or parking garage, and using an app to have the car drive off to park itself.

Software company Seoul Robotics is using NVIDIA technology to make this possible — turning non-autonomous cars into self-driving vehicles.

Headquartered in Korea, the company’s initial focus is on improving first- and last-mile logistics such as parking. Its Level 5 Control Tower is a mesh network of sensors and computers placed on infrastructure around a facility, like buildings or light poles — rather than on individual cars — to capture an unobstructed view of the environment.

The system enables cars to move autonomously by directing their vehicle-to-everything, or so-called V2X, communication systems. These systems pass information from a vehicle to infrastructure, other vehicles, any surrounding entities — and vice versa. V2X technology, which comes standard in many modern cars, is used to improve road safety, traffic efficiency and energy savings.

Seoul Robotics’ platform, dubbed LV5 CTRL TWR, collects 3D data from the environment using cameras and lidar. Computer vision and deep learning-based AI analyze the data, determining the most efficient and safest paths for vehicles within the covered area.

Then, through V2X, the platform can manage a car’s existing features, such as adaptive-cruise-control, lane-keeping and brake-assist functions, to safely get it from place to place.

LV5 CTRL TWR is built using NVIDIA CUDA libraries for creating GPU-accelerated applications, as well as the Jetson AGX Orin module for high-performance AI at the edge . NVIDIA GPUs are used in the cloud for global fleet path planning.

Seoul Robotics is a member of NVIDIA Metropolis — a partner program centered on an application framework and set of developer tools that supercharge vision AI applications — and NVIDIA Inception , a free, global program that nurtures cutting-edge startups.

Autonomy Through Infrastructure

Seoul Robotics is pioneering a new path to level 5 autonomy , or full driving automation, with what’s known as “autonomy through infrastructure.”

“Instead of outfitting the vehicles themselves with sensors, we’re outfitting the surrounding infrastructure with sensors,” said Jerone Floor, vice president of product and solutions at Seoul Robotics.

Using V2X capabilities, LV5 CTRL TWR sends commands from infrastructure to cars, making vehicles turn right or left, move from point A to B, brake and more. It achieves an accuracy in positioning a car of plus or minus four centimeters.

“No matter how smart a vehicle is, if another car is coming from around a corner, for example, it won’t be able to see it,” Floor said. “LV5 CTRL TWR provides vehicles with the last bits of information gathered from having a holistic view of the environment, so they’re never ‘blind.’”

These communication protocols already exist in most vehicles, he added. LV5 CTRL TWR acts as the AI-powered brain of the instructive mechanisms, requiring nothing more than a firmware update in cars.

“From the beginning, we knew we needed deep learning in the system in order to achieve the really high performance required to reach safety goals — and for that, we needed GPU acceleration,” Floor said. “So, we designed the system from the ground up based on NVIDIA GPUs and CUDA.”

NVIDIA CUDA libraries help the Seoul Robotics team render massive amounts of data from the 3D sensors in real time, as well as accelerate training and inference for its deep learning models.

As a Metropolis member, Seoul Robotics received early access to software development kits and the NVIDIA Jetson AGX Orin for edge AI.

“The compute capabilities of Jetson AGX Orin allow us to have the LV5 CTRL TWR cover more area with a single module,” Floor added. “Plus, it handles a wide temperature range, enabling our system to work in both indoor and outdoor units, rain or shine.”

Deployment Across the Globe

LV5 CTRL TWR is in early commercial deployment at a BMW manufacturing facility in Munich.

According to Floor, cars must often change locations once they’re manufactured, from electrical repair stations to parking lots for test driving and more.

Equipped with LV5 CTRL TWR, the BMW facility has automated such movement of cars — resulting in time and cost savings. Automating car transfers also enhances safety for employees and frees them up to focus on other tasks, like headlight alignment and more, Floor said.

And from the moment a vehicle is fully manufactured until it’s delivered to the customer, it moves on average through up to seven parking lots. Moving cars manually costs manufacturers anywhere from $30 to $60, per car, per lot — meaning LV5 CTRL TWR can address a $30 billion market .

The technology behind LV5 CTRL TWR can be used across industries, Floor highlighted. Beyond automotive factories, Seoul Robotics envisions its platform to be deployed across the globe — at retail stores, airports, traffic intersections and more.

A$AP Rocky hit with TWO charges four months after rapper was arrested at airport while with Rihanna

August 16, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

RAPPER A$AP Rocky has been charged in connection to a 2021 shooting in California, said the state’s district attorney on Monday.

A$AP Rocky , real name Rakim Mayers, is facing two counts of assault with a semiautomatic firearm with allegations of personally using a firearm.

District Attorney George Gascón revealed his office filed the charges against Mayers following the alleged assault against a former friend last November.

The two men allegedly got into an argument on November 6, 2021, which escalated and resulted in the rapper allegedly firing the handgun at the other man, according to authorities.

The Los Angeles Police Department said the victim sustained a minor injury and Mayers allegedly fled the scene with two other people.

He was arrested in April of this year at LAX following a vacation in Barbados with girlfriend, Rihanna.

“Discharging a gun in a public place is a serious offense that could have ended with tragic consequences not only for the person targeted but also for innocent bystanders visiting Hollywood,’ said Gascón in a statement.

“My office conducted a thorough review of the evidence in this case and determined that the addition of a special firearm allegation was warranted.”

Rocky is also being sued for assault and battery by a former member of the ASAP Mob, ASAP Relli, who claims that he is the alleged victim in the shooting.

Relli claims he was hit with bullet fragments and suffered injuries as a result.

Mayers is scheduled to be arraigned on Wednesday.

He is out on $550,000 bail, reported LATimes .

The U.S. Sun has reached out to A$AP Rocky’s reps for comment.
