George Russell in scary crash at British GP which flips Zhou Guanyu’s car upside down

July 3, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

Zhou Guanyu’s car flipped upside down after an incident involving George Russell which saw the British Grand Prix red-flagged on the first lap.

The first running of the Silverstone race lasted for just 21 seconds before the marshals were waving red flags. The incident, which involved several drivers, led to Zhou’s car flipping and skidding at high speed along the track before smashing into a barrier.

Russell, whose Mercedes was damaged in the crash, was quick to get out of his Mercedes and run over to the stricken Alfa Romeo to check on his fellow racer. Zhou was taken out of the car after several minutes, and Alfa Romeo confirmed: “Following a crash at the start of the British Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu is conscious and now at the circuit’s medical centre to undergo evaluation.”

Russell is out of a race for the first time this season, ending his streak of top-five finishes. Yuki Tsunoda, Esteban Ocon and Alexander Albon were also involved in the incident.

Replays showed Pierre Gasly had made contact with Russell’s car, and the spinning Mercedes slammed into Zhou. The Alfa flipped almost immediately, and skidded towards the barrier, before it became airborne again and leapt over the tyre wall and into the fence protecting spectators.

Meanwhile, a group of protestors stormed the track on the first lap – even thought the racing had been stopped before they reached the part of the track that had been invaded. Photos show the protestors being dealt with by marshals and police after being taken off the track.

The crash came after another scary incident at Silverstone earlier in the day, during the F2 feature race . Roy Nissany was saved from possible death by his halo safety system, when the car of rival Dennis Hauger landed on top of him.

Nissany was engaged in a tight fight with Dennis Hauger on the opening lap of the race, when the frightening incident occurred. The pair made contact heading into Vale, and Hauger couldn’t help but go off the track.

His front right tyre was torn right off the rim, which didn’t help him in his attempts to stop his Prema as it skidded across the grass and hit the inside of the sausage kerb. His car bounced up in the air and landed on top of Nissany’s, with only the protective Halo preventing the sidepod from making contact with the Israeli’s helmet.

George Russell has hit out at an FIA rule for ending his British Grand Prix early as he confirms Mercedes have launched a protest. Russell said he could not get his car started after jumping out to check on the condition of Zhou after the Alfa Romeo rolled.

He ran to check how to get the car going but noticed marshals had already loaded the car onto a truck when he came back. Russell said Mercedes had appealed the decision but said the FIA were “adamant” he could not restart.

He said: “Firstly I’m glad to see Zhou is ok after an absolutely horrific incident.

“Ultimately we took a risk starting on the hard because I made a mistake in qualifying and we were starting out of position. We thought that risk gave us the best opportunity later in the race, but there was just no grip whatsoever.

“The hardest compound is cold out there and I got swamped by all the cars. Next thing I know I got touched, was in the side of Zhou and that was it.

“I jumped out of the car to see if Zhou was ok. I saw it was red flagged straight away. When I came back to the car I couldn’t quite get it started for whatever reason so I ran back to the team to check. I told the marshals to leave the car and when I got back it was on the back of the flatbed. As soon as you get assistance you can’t restart.

“We are trying [to appeal] but they are pretty adamant, the FIA. It’s one of those unique scenarios.”

Russell’s car was severely damaged in the accident on the opening lap. The Mercedes rookie swerved to the right, making contact with the Alpha Tauri of Pierre Gasly before being launched into the rear right tyre of Zhou.

However, there was some hope Russell could have continued in the race. Sky Sports host Karun Chandhok reported Mercedes engineers were assessing the damage with hopes they could fix it during the lengthy red flag period.

However, about half an hour later, Ted Kravitz said Rusell had been told that he would not be allowed to continue. Mercedes still have hope of a podium with Lewis Hamilton jumping up to fourth at the restart. The Briton then took advantage of a puncture for Max Verstappen to move up to third.

George Russell has said he ‘wants’ to beat Mercedes team-mate Lewis Hamilton at their home Grand Prix. The 24-year-old was out-qualified by his experienced compatriot in Saturday’s qualifying starting eighth, three places behind the seven-time world champion.

Russell has enjoyed a successful start to his Mercedes career despite the team’s wider performance issues. He has finished every race within the top five, a record that has not been equalled by any other driver and sits fourth in the World Drivers’ Championship. He has won 34 points more than his British team-mate despite Hamilton’s experience within the Brackley-based outfit.

Now Russell has fired a warning to the 103-time race winner ahead of their home Grand Prix. He has said he hopes to beat his fellow Brit despite their relationship as colleagues.

“Obviously, I want to beat my team-mate and I’m not going to take offence if he says the same,” Russell explained in an interview with the Guardian . “But I would not see my season as a success purely because I’ve finished ahead of him more times than he had finished ahead of me. I would see it as a success if I was standing at the top step of the podium.”

George Russell and Lewis Hamilton

The four-time podium sitter grew up idolising the sport’s most successful driver. He enjoys a close friendship with Hamilton and regularly asks him for advice. The 24-year-old this is similar across the Formula One paddock with friendships not stopping drivers from wanting to race hard.

“I guess if you took an average look across F1 teammates, that is probably the case,” Russell said. “There are a lot of people who get along in this paddock but overall, we are all fierce rivals. We are all here to be competitive and to try and win. You are in a battle.”

Hamilton has only been beaten by a team-mate twice in his career, first by Jenson Button in 2010 and then by Nico Rosberg when the German famously pipped the 37-year-old to the Championship. Russell sits in a strong position to be the third name on the list, a feat made more impressive by the fact he spent the previous three years of his F1 career struggling with backmarkers Williams.

George Russell was one of many drivers forced out of the race after a massive accident brought out the red flags on lap one at the British Grand Prix. The multi-car crash involved at least four cars, with Guanyu Zhou catapulted onto his roof.

Russell immediately jumped out of his car and ran towards Zhou’s wreckage in a bid to help the Chinese star. The race was suspended while teams rushed to the destroyed Alfa Romeo.

Sky Sports commentator David Croft confirmed Zhou had been taken out of the car and was taken away on a stretcher. The accident happened seconds after the race was started as the cars dashed into turn one.

Russell got a bad start and was involved in a scuffle for position with Pirerre Gasly and Zhou. Russell then swerved to the left to find some room in the battle and made contact with the Alpha Tauri, this knocked him into Zhou’s rear right rear wheel which sent the Alfa Romeo star into a roll.

The car cleared the row of tyre barriers and struck the catch fence just metres from the grandstand. The impact shocked some photographers who ducked as the car came towards the fence.

Ted Kravitz revealed he had spoken to Alfa Romeo boss Frederic Vasseur moments after the crash. The Alfa Romeo boss said he thinks Zhou was conscious throughout the incident.

Alfa Romeo confirmed Zhou was at the circuit’s medical centre to “undergo evaluation”.

A statement from F1 said: “Following an incident at the start of the race Alex Albon and Zhou Guanyu have been taken to the medical centre. Both drivers are conscious and continue to be evaluated. Further updates will be given in due course.”

The Williams of Alex Albon and Yuki Tsunoda were also forced out with damage picked up in a separate shunt.

Albon broke hard in a reaction to Zhou’s crash which caused Sebastian Vettel to hit the back of him. Esteban Ocon was also involved in the accident and drove back to the pits with severe damage to the front of his car.

It was immediately thought Russell would be out of the race but Sky Sports Karun Chandhok then revealed the Mercedes mechanics were studying the damage. With a lengthy red flag expected, it is possible the damage could be repaired to get Russell back out for the restart.

About half an hour later Ted Kravitz then announced Russell would not be allowed to take the restart despite the optimism.

George Russell blames tyre choice for poor start which led to horror British GP crash

July 3, 2022 by www.dailystar.co.uk Leave a Comment

George Russell expressed his relief that Zhou Guanyu was okay after being involved in Chinese driver’s “horrific” crash at the start of the British Grand Prix .

After a slow getaway in his Mercedes, Russell appeared to receive a tap to the rear which sent him into the path of Zhou, whose Alfa Romeo flipped over , careered across the gravel trap, dug in and vaulted over the tyre barrier and into the catch fencing, just metres from spectators in a grandstand.

After being trapped in his car for a few minutes, Zhou was eventually extracted. His team tweeted: “Following a crash at the start of the British Grand Prix, Zhou Guanyu is conscious and now at the circuit’s medical centre to undergo evaluation.” He has seen released from hospital.

Russell felt the decision to begin to the race on the harder, less grippy but more durable, tyres contributed to his slow start. Speaking before the restart, which Russell was not able to take, the Briton told Sky Sports: “Thankfully Zhou’s okay, an absolutely horrific incident.

“Ultimately, we took a risk starting on the hards. I made mistake in qualifying and we were starting out of position. We thought that risk gave us the best opportunity later in the race.

“I had no grip whatsoever on the hardest compound. I was swamped by a load of cars. The next thing I know, I was touched, I was in the side of Zhou and that was it.”

Despite his car being damaged amid the first corner chaos, Russell wanted to take the restart but was told by officials that wouldn’t be possible.

“I told the marshals to leave the car and when I got back the car was on the back of a flatbed [lorry],” explained Russell. “Apparently, as soon as you get assistance, you can’t restart. It’s very frustrating because the car just had a puncture. There’s no doubt we had the pace to come back for P6 today.”
