Remembering Om Puri and the forgotten legacy of ‘East is East’ as a modern British classic

January 6, 2017 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

I hadn’t thought about East is East in a while. When I was growing up I used to watch the 1999 comedy-drama, directed by Damien O’Donnell, every time it was shown on television—which was quite often. And on Friday morning when the world learned that Om Puri , the Indian actor who so memorably played the strict but big-hearted patriarch George Khan, had died, I remembered just how important this film had been to my life and upbringing, and the lives of countless other British-Asians.

It takes place in the 1970s, when I was not even born, and set in rural Lancashire, north England—which feels alien to me, a metropolitan Londoner. But I related so much to East is East . It was the first time I had seen my skin color and my experiences as a British-Asian reflected back to me in a feature film, and so brilliantly too.

The bawdy comedy is the story of the Khans, an interracial family led by Pakistani-Muslim George (Puri) and his English wife Ella (Linda Bassett), whose different backgrounds often lead to culture clashes while raising their seven children. The film explored the dichotomy between the cultural identity we inherit from our parents and the one we create for ourselves, attitudes to homosexuality, and domestic violence—which remains a major problem today in south Asian communities across Britain yet alarmingly underreported .

I didn’t see East Is East until a few years after its release in 1999, just as I was becoming a teenager, roughly the same age as George and Ella’s youngest kids, Meenah (the fantastic Good Wife star Archie Panjabi in an early role) and parka enthusiast Sajid . I identified with the children’s struggle to adhere to the strict faith handed down by their religious father while trying to understand their place in the country they called home. One scene that still resonates with me all these years later is three of the kids indulging in bacon and sausages—forbidden in halal diets—while George is out of the house. When they peer out of the window and see him walking home, in a panic, they try to rid themselves of the evidence and crack open all nearby windows, willing the smell of the pork to miraculously dissipate. It’s not a key point in the film’s plot, but it sticks out because it snapshots the curiosity to experience things that are part of the British norm—pork, alcohol, dating—but forbidden in your household. It’s a curiosity I know all too well.

Puri’s portrayal of George is central to why audiences across Britain watched and rewatched East Is East for years after its release; and this role will be his most enduring legacy. George’s broken English, heavy accent and inclination for ungrammatical profanity— “you bastard bitch” —reminded me of my own father. That was why the actor’s performance was so ingenious: It was believable. Beyond the dramatic moments, or the slapstick ones, it was Puri’s talent in depicting the respect and fear that George commanded from his children that resonated with so many British-Asian viewers like me, accustomed to that dynamic at home.

In 2000, East Is East won best British film at the BAFTA Film Awards , a huge milestone for a film that featured predominantly brown faces. Puri even got his own nomination for best actor. I’d like to say that this had an enduring impact on the British film industry and ushered in recognition for more movies that told diverse stories with casts that accurately reflected an increasingly multicultural Britain. But it didn’t. That is evident from the diversity debate that still casts a shadow on awards ceremonies both in Britain and Hollywood.

The last few winners of the best British film award have included costume dramas about royals or famous scientists and a James Bond film . They are great films, but they are not ones that reflect British society today. They are not films that remind children from communities like mine that our stories, too, are worth telling.

For too long, South Asians on screen have been cab drivers and grocery clerks; on the sidelines rather than the stars of the show. In Puri’s death, we should remember East Is East as a cultural touchstone for so many people—and celebrate it as a true classic of modern British cinema.

George Gascón Gloats over Failed Recall: ‘Attempted Political Power-grab’

August 15, 2022 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón celebrated the announcement Monday that a recall petition against him had failed, after officials eliminated nearly 200,000 signatures in a controversial review from which observers were excluded.

Gascón tweeted: “Grateful to move forward from this attempted political power grab-rest assured LA County, the work hasn’t stopped. My primary focus has been & will always be keeping us safe & creating a more equitable justice system for all. I remain strongly committed to that work & to you.”

Grateful to move forward from this attempted political power grab-rest assured LA County, the work hasn’t stopped.

My primary focus has been & will always be keeping us safe & creating a more equitable justice system for all.

I remain strongly committed to that work & to you.

— George Gascón (@GeorgeGascon) August 15, 2022

The dismissal of the recall petitions is a victory for billionaire left-wing donor George Soros, who spent millions to elect Gascón in 2020, ousting Jackie Lacey, the first black woman to hold the job.

But it represents a great defeat for public safety in L.A., according to Gascón’s critics, who blame him and his “reform” policies for a surge in violent crime in the county.

Gascon took office in December 2020 and immediately began to implement policies consistent with the priorities of the Black Lives Matter movement, ending cash bail, canceling sentence enhancements for murder suspects, and allowing one notorious sexual abuser to serve a short sentence in juvenile prison that ensured he (or she, now a transgender woman) would not have to register as a sex offender. (The same convict was later arrested for murder.)

Los Angeles County argued that observers did not have the right to watch the examination of signatures because it did not qualify as an “election” under the law. The county rejected less than 1% of ballots submitted by mail in the 2020 election.

In June, San Francisco voters recalled left-wing district attorney Chesa Boudin, who was a close political ally of Gascón.

Kalyn Ponga contract saga takes another turn as Knights fall short in dramatic loss to St George Illawarra

April 17, 2022 by www.abc.net.au Leave a Comment

The Roosters and Warriors kicked off Easter Sunday’s NRL action at the SCG with the Tricolours coming out on top.

Then St George Illawarra found a dramatic win over the Knights to snap their winless run.

Check out all the news, scores and stats below.

St George Illawarra Dragons 21 def Newcastle Knights 16

Zac Lomax has helped St George Illawarra snap a four-game NRL losing streak, booting the Dragons to a controversial 21-16 win over Newcastle.

In a see-sawing battle at WIN Stadium, the Dragons took the lead on three separate occasions before Lomax nailed a 78th-minute field goal to put the hosts ahead for good.

A late try to Mat Feagai ended any hopes of a miracle Knights comeback.

After the match, Newcastle coach Adam O’Brien insisted negotiations with Kalyn Ponga remain on track, denying a report that a contract extension had been pulled from the table.

The star fullback had easily his best game of the season but it came in the shadow of claims he was set to depart the club, with the Daily Telegraph reporting an extension for the club’s biggest name had been withdrawn.

Ponga has a contract with Newcastle for the next two years, but has an option to leave at the end of this season if he wishes.

The Knights are believed to be attempting to extend that deal well beyond the end of 2024, with Ponga due to make a call before round 12.

Loading

O’Brien laughed off the claims, pointing to confusion over the fact the club had also been linked to Cameron Munster.

“It has never been brought up to me once as the head coach (that the contract has been pulled),” O’Brien said.

“Absolutely news to me, as far as I know. Our CEO (Phil Gardner) isn’t even in the country, he’s in Hawaii.

“I think they’re still going through their process, both sides. Kalyn’s management and the Knights. Things are tracking along there..”

Ponga was also adamant he had the right to take his time on his decision.

“I know what I’m feeling, but that is between me and my management,” Ponga said.

“I know you guys want to know what I am doing.

“I hope you guys respect that I want to make this decision on my terms and announce it on my terms. So that’s what I will do.”

Regardless, Ponga at least showed he was not distracted by the ongoing negotiations on Sunday.

Poor by his standards in the previous two weeks since coming back from a knee injury, the 24-year-old was clearly the Knights’ best.

He set up their first try when he bounced and stepped his way through the line for Enari Tuala to score, and bagged one of his own after a Bradman Best bust.

“I think he showed tonight why he is worth the wait,” O’Brien said.

“With the short turnarounds, four in a row (the knee) would have been bothering him absolutely.

“You are getting over a game and I don’t want to push him too hard at training to be with the team and connect.

“But his performance today, I thought he was by far the best player on the field.”

The win wasn’t pretty but it was precisely what the Dragons needed after a horror start to the season that had the pressure on coach Anthony Griffin.

The Knights are now in the middle of their own four-game losing streak.

After both sides fumbled their way through the first half and the Dragons led 8-4, the Knights put themselves back in the game when Dane Gagai finished off a nice try on the right edge.

The Dragons then took the lead back when Ben Hunt wrapped around and broke down the left edge to kick for a chasing Jack Bird to score.

The Saints then scored again, this time through Feagai when they moved to the left.

But centre Bradman Best stood up to get the Knights back in it at 16-all.

The 20-year-old made the most of a David Klemmer offload to get around Lomax, breaking down field and putting Ponga over for his four-pointer.

Ultimately though, Lomax would have the last laugh when he sent a 25-metre field goal deep into the Southern Stand to end a nightmare four weeks for St George Illawarra.

Sydney Roosters 22 def New Zealand Warriors 14

Sam Walker has followed in the footsteps of NRL premiership-winning five-eighth of 20 years ago Brad Fittler in helping the Sydney Roosters subdue the spirited Warriors 22-14 at the SCG on Sunday.

In a match honouring the 2002 NRL grand final between these two sides, Fittler actually presented Walker with his jersey at a celebratory function during the week.

And that exchange seemed fitting as the 19-year-old showed the same sort of bamboozling footwork that was Fittler’s trademark.

Walker busted out of three tackles, sent deceptive grubbers or crisp passes left and right, kicked five goals and scored a try for a personal tally of 14 points.

Loading

When he planted the ball with his fingertips in the 60th minute after some nifty footwork, it gave the Roosters the momentum they needed to wrap up the match even though the Warriors scored later through winger Dallin Watene-Zelezniak.

The loss snapped a three-match winning streak by the New Zealand team, who now head to Melbourne for the traditional Anzac Day match against the Storm.

It did take 52 minutes before the Roosters managed to grab the lead, largely off some staunch and smart defence from the Warriors.

The match was greatly anticipated since the Roosters overcame the Warriors 30-8 in the decider 20 years ago for the club’s 12th premiership.

That Roosters team, along with coach Ricky Stuart, were special guests at the famous SCG on Sunday, while both teams wore replica jerseys from two decades ago.

But the party schedule didn’t go to plan with the visitors grabbing an 8-0 lead after 15 minutes through an Edward Kosi try — the man who replaced suspended Marcelo Montoya.

They hung on for an 8-6 half-time lead despite a fine Daniel Tupou try, when fullback James Tedesco chimed into the left edge to provide the extra man.

Loading

The two sides began the game with three wins apiece after five rounds, so the expected arm wrestle was well and truly under way.

Warriors fullback Reece Walsh made a mistake in the kick-off after the break to give the Roosters a piggy-back penalty down the ground.

Further ill-discipline from the Warriors and a penalty right in front of the posts levelled things up at 8-all early in the second half.

The game seemed to fizzle a little as a spectacle.

But then a Luke Keary bomb was misfielded and Kevin Naiqama scored on opportunistic try in his third game for the Roosters.

Walker’s four-pointer followed eight minutes later and it seemed to put out the last bit of fire in the Warriors.

The match also marked the first NRL game this year for another bright young Roosters teenager, 18-year-old winger Joseph Suaalii wasn’t even born when the Roosters hoisted the NRL trophy in 2002.

Nashville’s Fisk University reveals first-ever HBCU gymnastics team

Fisk University gymnastics head coach Corrinne Tarver and first-year team member Zyia Coleman share excitement for the upcoming season

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles!

Nashville’s Fisk University has officially launched the first-ever women’s gymnastics team at an HBCU.

Black gymnasts, in the past, have been forced to make a tough decision between attending an HBCU institution or pursuing a passion for gymnastics, according to those at Fisk.

Now, lifelong gymnasts such as Zyia Coleman, a Fisk University incoming freshman, are able to participate in the best of both worlds.

“We’re making history,” Coleman said on a call with Fox News Digital.

“I’m really excited to be a part of history,” she added.

The 18-year-old described the opportunity as “breathtaking.” She expressed her excitement about displaying the skills and abilities that she and her teammates offer — and, of course, to have fun and keep learning while doing it.

“I just fell in love with gymnastics.”

Originally from Atlanta, Georgia, Coleman said gymnastics always came naturally to her as the daughter of a gymnastics coach who taught advanced skills to her at a young age.

“I started competing at the age of five and ever since then, I just fell in love with gymnastics,” she said.

Eight years later, Coleman admitted that she wasn’t sold on the thought of college at all until the opportunity to attend an HBCU and practice gymnastics presented itself.

“When you think of HBCUs, you think of the band, the great music, the majorette team,” she said.

She added she hopes that “when you think of HBCUs in the future, you’re going to think of gymnastics.”

TEENS AWARDED $10K IN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS FOR MAKING DUCT TAPE PROM OUTFITS

In an interview with Fox News Digital, Fisk University athletic director and head coach Corrinne Tarver considered the development “long overdue.”

Tarver, who was herself a U.S. National Team gymnast and a national gymnastics champion at the University of Georgia, suggested the hold-up in finally launching an HBCU-based program may be due to the fact that the sport is popular mostly during Olympic years.

“When you look at gymnastics traditionally, the only time you saw it on TV was when it was the national championships and sometimes the world championships,” she said.

“So, people didn’t really see it other than [during] the Olympic timeframe … That has a lot to do with public perception of gymnastics.”

PARENTS NEED TO LET GO AT COLLEGE DROP-OFF SO KIDS CAN THRIVE, EXPERTS SAY

Regardless, Coleman said she’s “just happy to be a part of it today.”

For Coach Tarver, taking on the historic team as head coach is a continuation of her barrier-breaking gymnastics career. She was the first Black gymnast to attend UGA and win an NCA all-around title.

“For me, it’s exciting to take it to the next level,” she said.

The Fisk University gymnastics team is expecting to compete against other collegiate teams this season from across the country, including teams from George Washington University, Towson University and the University of Michigan.

Coleman said she’s most looking forward to introducing Fisk gymnastics to the rest of the nation and representing her college.

“We were all cheering each other on.”

“Coach Tarver — she’s recruited many great gymnasts,” she said.

Tarver also said she’s eager for the team to be “successful.”

Said Tarver, “I’m throwing my girls in the deep end.”

The team’s first practice took place on Aug. 8, which Coleman described as “lively.”

She reported that the team “just clicked,” even though the women all come from different areas of the U.S.

“I was so excited just to see everyone working,” she said. “We were all cheering each other on.”

“It was just great vibes, great energy, and it was a connection.”

After the first practice, Coleman posted a video on TikTok showcasing the girls in action.

The video went viral, receiving nearly 780,000 views as of currently — and an outpouring of support in the comments section.

“It’s a lot of pressure, but I’m excited,” Coleman said. “We’re ready.”

Tarver agreed that the overall reaction from the public has been “very positive” and gave a shout-out to Brown Girls Do Gymnastics, an advocacy organization.
