Gold medal game

Yogeshwar Dutt backs Indian wrestlers to win medals in all 12 categories in Commonwealth Games 2022

July 1, 2022 by www.mykhel.com Leave a Comment

Indian wrestlers have always been impressive in international events and Yogeshwar reckons they will once again be on top of their game and emerge glorious at the upcoming quadrennial games in the British city.

Yogeshwar, a bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics and two times CWG champion in 2010 & 2014 believes that the Pro Wrestling League also has played a pivotal role in the development of wrestlers in the country and has been a great value add for the sport in the country.

“India is always considered as a wrestling powerhouse and I am quite sure India will win medals in all the 12 categories including 8-9 gold medals,” Yogeshwar said during the recently concluded Indian Sports Award 2022.

Yogeshwar, a bronze medalist at the 2012 London Olympics and two times CWG champion in 2010 & 2014 believes that the Pro Wrestling League also has played a pivotal role in the development of wrestlers in the country and has been a great value add to the sport in the country.

“Pro Wrestling League has been beneficial for creating a wrestling ecosystem in the country. Not everyone gets a chance to play at the international level at the beginning of their career and PWL has provided them just a similar kind of experience. Rubbing shoulders against the top international players including Olympic and world champions and sharing the dressing room with the stalwarts was a big exposure for them and I want the league to start again soon as this will help a lot in preparing players for international level,” Yogeshwar added.

The Khel Ratna awardee from Sonipat, Yogeshwar believes that the Commonwealth Games this year will be a special affair as fans will be allowed in the stadiums, unlike Tokyo Olympics which was held behind closed doors.

“It feels very lonely out there in the middle without the presence of fans and well-wishers as there is no one to cheer and motivate the athlete. It was the same for all the sports due to COVID-19 restrictions but with fans being allowed back it is great for us,” said the wrestler-turned coach.

“There is no fun to play in front of an empty stadium as whether we win or lose, the support from the fans in the stadium helps us a lot in recovering from the setback,” he signed off.

The Birmingham CWG begins on July 28 and the wrestling competition is scheduled to be conducted on August 5 and 6.

Neeraj Chopra Feels Winning Gold at Olympics Will Not Put Pressure on Him at World Championships

July 1, 2022 by www.news18.com Leave a Comment

Neeraj Chopra feels the pressure of being the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games gold medallist is unlikely to affect his performance at the World Championships in Oregon, USA from July 15.

Continuing his superb form, Chopra broke the national record again with a throw of 89.94m to finish second in the Stockholm Diamond League 2022 in Sweden on Thursday. The Indian javelin ace fell just six centimetres short of the elusive 90m mark but he bettered his personal best of 89.30m, set earlier this month at the Paavo Nurmi Games in Finland.

World champion Anderson Peters of Grenada broke the 16-year-old meet record with a huge 90.31m throw in his third attempt, which was enough to get him the top spot.

Chopra said he will play with a “free mind” and “perform to potential” in Oregon, where he could bring India only its second medal ever from the World Championships. Only former India long jumper Anju Bobby George has won a medal at the Worlds, clinching bronze in Paris 2003.

“Well, I don’t know (whether there will be pressure of being an Olympic medallist or not). I think I’ll come to know about it on the day of the competition in Oregon. Every competition, every day is different. When I start competing, I will know whether I am feeling the pressure of being the Olympic champion,” Chopra told JSW Sports.

“Having said that, I think nothing of that sort should happen because I play with a free mind and perform to my potential. There is no pressure whatsoever. I train well and give my 100 per cent in competition,” the 24-year-old Chopra added.

Chopra also said that when Anderson Peters of Grenada breached the 90-metre mark with his giant third attempt on Thursday, he also tried to give it his best shot, but to hurl the javelin that far, everything has to be perfect.

“When Anderson Peters crossed 90m, I also felt that I have to breach that (mark). But for that to happen everything has to be perfect. The javelin has to go in a straight line and the technique too has to be perfect. When everything is perfect only then the throw goes that far.

“We put in a lot of effort in each throw, so the body also tires. Having said that, I am happy with the competition and the fact that all my throws were good. Playing in the Diamond League after a long time (2018), I gave a good performance which has prepared me for the next two completions (Worlds and Birmingham Commonwealth Games).”

Chopra is also happy with the growing popularity of athletics in India and added that it was heartening to see so many Indians turning up to see him compete in Stockholm.

“Feeling very happy and proud that people are watching athletics online in India. Many Indians had come to Stockholm to watch me. The Indian ambassador too came to meet me, so it felt really nice that athletics is getting so much popularity in the country. People are getting to know about the sport,” added Chopra.

Sindhu out to add C’wealth gold to medal collection

July 1, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my Leave a Comment

INDIA’S women’s singles star P.V. Sindhu is out to add the Commonwealth Games individual gold to her growing medal collection.

The 2019 world champion and 2016 Rio Olympic silver medallist has surprisingly not captured gold in the quadrennial Games individual event.

In the last edition in 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia, Sindhu had to settle for silver after being denied in the final by compatriot Saina Nehwal.

She did win a gold in the mixed team event though.

The world No. 7 Sindhu is determined to finally get her hands on the individual gold this year in Birmingham.

“I really hope to win the gold this time. It will mean so much to me to represent my country at the Commonwealth Games and win,” said Sindhu.

The 26-year-old is considered the hot favourite for the title but she prefers to be cautious.

“I won’t say it will be easy for me. There are others whom I have to watch out for like Scotland’s Kirsty Gilmour, Canada’s Michelle Li, Malaysia’s Goh Jin Wei and Singapore’s Yeo Jia Min. So, it’s very important for me to stay focused and be at my best,” added Sindhu.

The Indian looks good for the gold judging by her performances in the Malaysian Open so far.

She marched into the quarter-finals yesterday after overcoming a first game wobble to beat Thailand’s Phittayaporn Chaiwan 19-21, 21-9, 21-14 in the second round.

She will take on Taiwan’s world No. 2 Tai Tzu-ying today for a place in the last four.

Sindhu needs a big performance to take down the in-form Taiwanese who captured the Indonesian Open recently.

The head-to-head record is overwhelmingly in favour of Tzu-ying who has come out tops with a whopping 15 wins in their last 20 meetings.

Thus, Sindhu will need to go the extra mile to get one over Tzu-ying and further boost her confidence ahead of the Commonwealth Games.

Tzu-ying marched to a 21-11, 21-9 win over Kristin Kuuba of Estonia while her China’s Chen Yufei also stayed in the hunt with a 21-12, 21-19 win over Busanan Ongbamrungphan of Thailand.

Ratchanok Intanon of Thailand also came from the dead to snatch a 15-21, 21-12, 21-18 win over Zhang Beiwen of the United States. Also through was China’s Han Yue who stunned third seed An Se-young of South Korea 21-23, 21-18, 21-16 to reach the last eight.

Hand it to Hendra as veteran has not given up on Olympics quest

June 30, 2022 by www.thestar.com.my Leave a Comment

INDONESIAN doubles ace Hendra Setiawan has a desire to attempt a feat that no player has ever done before – that is to win an Olympics gold after a lapse of 16 years at the Paris 2024 Games with Mohammad Ahsan.

Hendra, 37, won the men’s doubles gold with the late Markis Kido at the 2008 Beijing Games but failed to defend the title at the 2012 London Games after Markis withdrew from the event due to personal reasons.

This prompted Hendra to seek a new partner in Ahsan and the duo have won three world titles (2013, 2015 and 2019) but returned empty-handed from the 2016 Rio Games and the Tokyo Games last year.

However, Hendra has not given up on his chase for Olympics glory and is still optimistic of qualifying for the 2024 Games. He would be 39 while Ahsan 36.

“Age is not on our side and there are so many young pairs who are faster and physically stronger now. But we have the experience to rely on and I want to play at the Olympics for one last time in 2024,” said Hendra after reaching the second round of the Malaysian Open.

The world No. 3 Hendra-Ahsan were forced to come from behind to beat China’s Ren Xiangyu-Tan Qiang 17-21, 21-15, 21-14 in 50 minutes. They will meet another China pair He Jiting-Zhao Haodong today.

“Indonesia have several pairs who are also doing well and we hope to be given the chance by the association (PBSI) to play in Paris.

“Of course, the gold is everyone’s objective and we would give it a try and at least return with a medal.”

Hendra and Ahsan were denied the bronze in Tokyo by Malaysian pair Aaron Chia-Soh Wooi Yik in the playoff.

A medal itself will be an unprecedented achievement as no player has managed to win a medal after a lapse of 16 years.

South Korean Kim Dong-moon, who won the mixed doubles with Gil Young-ah in 1996, secured his second gold at the 2004 Athens Games through the men’s doubles with Ha Tae-kwon.

That remains the longest gap between gold medals by a shuttler at the Olympics.
