Golden retriever caught pretending to be “stuck” in water in hilarious clip

May 24, 2023 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

A video of a dog deceivingly appearing to be in need of help in the water has gone viral on TikTok , where it has received more than 2.8 million views.

The clip, posted from the TikTok account @drakethepupstar , shows a golden retriever with his head above water near a dock. A message overlaid on the video reads: “So many boats stop and ask if Drake [the golden retriever] needs help…”

The clip later shows the dog looking a bit lost in the water and later with his head buried under the water. A caption shared with the post reads: “Imagine seeing a dogs body bobbing in the inlet.”

Do All Dogs Love Water and Swimming?

Swimming is a great form of exercise for dogs, especially for pups with stiff or painful joints. It can also help keep them cool in hot weather.

However, “not every dog is a water baby ,” explains the People’s Dispensary for Sick Animals (PDSA), a veterinary charity based in the U.K. For example, dogs with short legs or ones with snub noses will find swimming hard work.

Owners should never leave their pet unsupervised. “Even dogs who are strong, experienced swimmers can get into trouble,” warns the VCA, one of North America’s largest animal-hospital chains. For example, a canine may not know how to get out of a river with a strong current.

Some swimming spots are much safer for dogs than others, says the PDSA. These include lakes, dog-friendly beaches and slow-moving rivers, as well as private swimming pools or paddling pools.

In the latest viral video, Drake the dog “has a ramp to get out,” and “doesn’t look like he’s stuck,” according to another overlaid message. The pup is shown going up the ramp and later paddling in the water.

“But then I realized he also does things like this,” another message reads. The golden retriever is seen remaining still while floating above water and looking around. The pup later dunks his head in the water, with almost his entire body submerged at one point.

Another note across the video reads, “So now I understand their concern,” as the clip ends.

‘Living His Best Life’

The latest video of Drake has amused several users on TikTok, with Bubbalicious writing: “He looks like he is having so much fun.”

Give Him Trees! wrote: “He’s like a kid who plays dead at the pool to see if he can trick the lifeguard…”

User weratedogs posted that “he’s just trying to enjoy the water, guys.”

Ty Evans commented: “He just wants to be left alone in his water.”

Chris wrote, “Looks like he is living his best life. Good for him,” and Linked Jaeger agreed, posting: “He is just living his best life ok!”

User @taylorbrc commented: “That is an ocean loving dog if i have ever seen one.”

Newsweek has contacted the original poster for comment via TikTok. This video has not been independently verified.

Memorial Day weekend air travel expected to break records

FOX Business’ Madison Alworth reports on Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg expected to speak on how the U.S. will handle the 17 million people expected to fly this weekend.

Weather service officials are warning beachgoers of dangerous surf and rip currents across U.S. coasts this Memorial Day weekend.

A developing non-tropical low off the Southeast coastline is forecast to produce heavy rain in the region and into the Mid-Atlantic that could cause flash flooding, gusty winds and hazardous beach and boating weather.

The National Weather Service said that the system has been gathering some strength over warm waters off Florida and Georgia, with the center heading toward the Carolinas.

“Coastal communities across the Southeast can expect strong and gusty winds, high surfs, in addition to life-threatening rip currents for much of the weekend,” it said. “Boating conditions will also be quite treacherous with a storm warning issued by the Ocean Prediction Center/NWS Forecast Office in Charleston for the offshore waters of the Carolinas.”

Showers and thunderstorms are expected to spread inland and a moderate risk of excessive rainfall has been issued for parts of the Northern and Southern Carolina coastal plain.

The Charleston office said on Twitter Thursday that low pressure of the coast would bring such conditions through Saturday, as well as breezy-to-windy weather and periods of minor coastal flooding.

The Wilmington office highlighted Friday that approximately 80% of rip current deaths in the Carolinas are people from inland areas, including those from nearby Kentucky.

“If you vacation at the beach, you need to know about rip currents and other hazards. Help us spread awareness to protect your friends and family,” it tweeted.

The Carolinas weren’t the only areas warning about rip current threats.

The office in Miami, Florida, said Saturday that there was a high risk for the Palm Beaches and a moderate risk for Broward and Miami-Dade beaches. The Jacksonville office said Friday that windy conditions would create dangerous beach conditions and told people to stay out of the water.

Up the East Coast, the Mount Holly office said Saturday that there was a moderate risk for rip currents due to a brisk northeastern wind.

“With low pressure slowly drifting northward on Sunday and Monday, today might be the most pleasant day of the holiday weekend, before clouds increase. Still, if you’re heading to the beaches today, be aware of the risk for rip currents, and prepare for some cool weather!” it advised.

On the West Coast, California offices said Friday that larger waves would bring stronger rips, with the Los Angeles office noting that over 100 people die from rip currents in the U.S. each year.

“Perhaps not the beach weather you were looking for,” the San Diego office said. “Either way, three-day weekend! Not for us though. We’ll be here as always.”
