Valneva cuts full-year outlook on lower COVID-19 vaccine sales

August 11, 2022 by health.economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Valneva on Thursday cut its full-year revenue outlook citing lower demand for its anti-COVID shot from European Union member states.

The European Commission in July slashed its order for VLA2001 to just 1.25 million doses from a previously targeted 60 million, pointing to European countries being well supplied with other vaccines and a slowdown in vaccination programmes.

The French drugmaker, based in southwest France, now expects to post revenue for the year of between 340 million and 360 million euros ($370 million) down from an earlier forecast of 430 million to 590 million.

Its COVID-19 product sales should reach between 30 million euros and 40 million euros in 2022. In February, Valneva had said it expected 350-500 million euros in COVID-19 vaccine sales.

In the six months to June, the shot’s sales brought in 3.8 million euros and the firm recognised writedowns of 100.6 million linked to the production inventory it bought to meet the initial purchase agreement with the European Commission, and subsequent halt of production.

“Given the revised volume of orders from the EU member states, we are evaluating how to reshape our operations,” CEO Thomas Lingelbach said in a statement.

Further development of the current or potential second-generation COVID-19 vaccine will depend on funding or commitments the group receives in the third quarter, the company said.

It will aim to deploy about eight to 10 million doses of remaining inventory into international markets, as it expects the vaccine’s shelf life to be gradually extended to at least 24 months.

Valneva expects sales of its travel-related products such as IXIARO for treating encephalitis or Dukoral for treating travellers’ diarrhoea to reach 70 million to 80 million euros this year and demand may even exceed its current supply capacity as the market recovers faster than expected.

Illegal knives for sale in UK for as little as 49p at top retailers like Amazon and eBay

August 11, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

Illegal weapons are being flogged by third-party sellers on a stream of popular online marketplaces, according to a new consumer watchdog investigation.

A probe by Which? found the dangerous items being sold on AliExpress, Amazon Marketplace, eBay and Wish.

It says its discovery demonstrates why major tech firms need to take more responsibility and carry out better checks on banned weapons which are being sold at “pocket-money” prices as low as 49p.

The findings were greeted with horror by police chiefs and trading standards officers amid an epidemic of knife crime across the UK which has left a soaring number of teenagers dead.

The consumer champion carried out simple searches for banned offensive weapons on popular online marketplaces, including zombie and flick knives, knuckle dusters, swords and batons.

It says it was easily able to find one or more of these potentially lethal items on the respective platforms.

Illegal batons were promoted as a set of trekking poles on Amazon (

Which? says the law, including the Offensive Weapons Act 2019, makes clear that none of these weapons should be available for sale in the UK – and they cannot even be owned in a private home.

If a person were to be caught with one of these products, they could face arrest and a prison sentence.

It comes after a Mirror probe last month found children can buy cheap killer knives in high street stores with shocking ease.

Our 16-year-old undercover shopper Martha was illegally sold big blades in 15 UK outlets, some for the price of a soft drink.

Investigators were shocked by the discovery

In Which? ‘s investigation, on its Amazon search, it found more than a dozen listings for friction lock batons masquerading as ‘trekking poles.’

Friction lock batons are a banned offensive weapon. It is illegal to buy and to sell them in the UK.

Some of the listings Which? found used special characters, such as ‘b’t ?’, in the title or only used the word baton in the artwork – presumably to avoid detection by Amazon.

Some of the images on the listings indicated that they could be used for self-defence and fighting.

On eBay, Which?’s experts found a variety of illegal swords, zombie knives, and knuckle dusters, including a 23-inch steel serrated-edged zombie knife costing £27 and a 27-inch zombie blade with a red fire design for £32.

One seller was offering a combo deal on a karambit blade and a ‘paralysing spray’ for £13.99.

According to eBay’s terms and conditions, none of these weapons should be for sale.

Which? found the widest selection of weapons for sale on AliExpress and Wish – with simple searches of the terms ‘flick knife’, ‘automatic opening knife’ and ‘spring assisted knives’ returning dozens of results on each, many priced at less than £10 and some even marketed for self-defence.

When it came to Wish, Which? was able to find a large number of flick knives and at least a dozen butterfly knives – blades that open out into a point – even though they are illegal.

The illegal knives could kill

Researchers also found several belt buckle knives priced from £8, a selection of knuckle dusters and a number of concealed blades – including a £1 knife designed to be hidden inside a wallet.

Other items included friction lock batons, one of which was disguised within an umbrella and another which was marketed for use in self-defence and had in excess of 30 UK reviews.

On AliExpress, Which? found a large number of flick knives, hidden blades, and a raft of ‘self-defence rings’ designed to be worn as knuckle dusters – one priced at just 49p.

AliExpress also targeted Which? with promotional emails for cut price blades after Which? searched on the site – including a variety of curved karambit knives, with one priced at just £1.79.

Which?’s understanding is that karambits are not illegal to own but are illegal to carry in public.

Researchers were also sent an email promotion for a knife with a skull design on the blade, priced at £9.63.

On all four platforms, additional banned weapons were recommended by their algorithms after Which?’s initial searches for weapons.

Amazon and eBay said they had removed all the listings reported to them by Which?.

The illegal knives were easily found for sale on the internet

Wish said it is in the process of removing the reported listings.

Amazon said it would take “appropriate enforcement” against the baton sellers, eBay said it was investigating why the items were not blocked to UK buyers and Wish said it was “exploring remedial action against any offending merchants.”

AliExpress said it had removed the listings but Which? received two further promotional emails from AliExpress since its initial response – one offering a ‘self defence’ flick knife for £2.83.

Which? believes its investigation shows online marketplaces must take more responsibility and carry out better checks and monitoring on dangerous items.

Sue Davies, Which? Head of Consumer Protection Policy, said: “It is disturbing that our latest investigation has uncovered illegal weapons being sold on online marketplaces at extraordinarily cheap prices and that these tech firms are also pushing additional dangerous items to people.

“This raises big question marks over the checks and monitoring being done by these platforms.

“It’s clear that online marketplaces need to take more responsibility and prevent illegal weapons appearing on their sites.”

They were found for sale online

Caroline Liggins, Head of Youth Team at law firm Hodge Jones & Allen, told Which?: “I was shocked, I thought they were going to be expensive and they were about £9.

“We were shocked by how easy it is to buy them. It’s pocket money, isn’t it?

“When we looked there were no signs warning about how old you have to be to buy these products and no warnings about what is lawful or unlawful.”

Richard Carr, a former senior Merseyside police detective turned lecturer in policing at Liverpool John Moores University, said the sale of such weapons can have real world consequences.

Butterfly knives like this one are easy to purchase online

He said: “I’m surprised from a moral perspective that websites are selling these types of products. When weapons of this nature get into the hands of people who have criminal intent, then that outcome can be catastrophic.”

AliExpress said: “The safety of our customers is our highest priority. We have strict guidelines for merchants regarding the sale of knives. In addition to this, customers must verify that they are over the age of 18 in order to be able to purchase knives on our platform.

“We have removed the items highlighted by Which?’s investigation and are reviewing the accounts of any third-party merchants who might have breached our platform rules. We thank Which? for bringing to our attention the category of ‘self-defence’ rings. We are investigating this and will continue to keep an eye on it. We regularly assess our practices to improve them.”

An Amazon spokesperson said: “We require all products to comply with applicable laws and have developed industry-leading tools to prevent non-compliant products from being listed in our stores. We are disappointed when bad actors evade our systems and we will use these learnings to improve our prevention mechanisms.

“These products have now been removed from the store and we are taking appropriate enforcement against the bad actors in question. These are isolated incidents that do not reflect the fantastic products and customer experience provided by millions of small businesses selling in our store.”

Amazon said the products have been removed (

eBay added: “eBay UK prohibits the sale of the vast majority of knives, with the exception of letter openers, certain tools and dining cutlery. Sellers must comply with our policies as well as any applicable laws and regulations when selling knives. As an international marketplace our policies vary across the world and some of the listings highlighted by Which? are permitted under US policy and sold by US registered sellers. UK buyers are blocked from purchasing these knives. We are investigating why this block did not take place in this instance.

“eBay takes the safety of its customers very seriously. We enforce our Product Safety Policy using block filter algorithms that aim to prevent unsafe products being listed on site in the first place and the eBay Security Team perform additional checks to identify listings that do not comply with our policies and takes enforcement action against sellers. This could include removing listings, selling restrictions or account suspensions.”

An eBay spokesperson said the company takes the safety of its customers very seriously (

A spokesperson for Wish said: “We condemn the listing or sale of illegal weapons on our UK platform – not only do such listings violate our Merchant Terms of Service, they fundamentally breach our moral code.

“While we have a number of systems and methods in place to prevent the appearance of illegal weapons, it appears, on this occasion, our merchants have identified a way to circumvent our processes. We are working to remove the listings highlighted by Which? and are carrying out an urgent review of our processes, while exploring remedial action against any offending merchants.”

With the Premier League season now officially underway, many top-flight clubs will know if they need to do more business before the window shuts. It is very much scramble time now and transfers are expected to come thick and fast as deadline day approaches.

Manchester United, more than most, need signings through the door after their humiliating 2-1 home defeat against Brighton on the opening day of the season. Adrien Rabiot and Cody Gakpo are currently their No 1 targets with deals for both stars under way in some capacity.

Chelsea, meanwhile, want to another defender and have made Wesley Fofana their priority, though Leicester’s £85million demands is currently holding the deal up.

Newcastle are also tipped to splash the cash in the next few weeks with a striker high on their agenda. They have a number of targets in their sights and will reportedly make a bid for a £25m-rated Goncalo Ramos, who is also being tracked by PSG.

The likes of Arsenal and Liverpool could also yet bring in at least one more fresh face, with a busy few weeks expected as we approach the end of the window.

Rabiot to Man Utd stalling on personal terms

Manchester United’s swoop for Juventus midfielder Adrien Rabiot is currently stalling due to personal terms, according to Di Marzio.

The player’s agent and mother, Veronique, is known to drive a hard bargain and was expected to pose hurdles in the touted £15million switch.

Erik ten Hag is keen to sign a new midfielder this summer and his move for priority target Frenkie de Jong has faltered.

Sergej Milinkovic-Savic has also been suggested as a potential option and the Red Devils could switch focus to the Lazio ace if prospects of signing De Jong fall through entirely.

Douglas Luiz set for new Villa deal

Douglas Luiz is set to sign a new three-year contract at Aston Villa, according to The Daily Mail .

The Brazilian has become one of manager Steven Gerrard’s key players and despite signing midfielder Boubacar Kamara earlier this summer, it appears as though there remains a crucial spot for Luiz at Villa Park.

The West Midlands outfit faced losing him for free at the end of the season, when his original deal was poised to expire.

Man City reach verbal agreement

Manchester City have verbally agreed to sign Sergio Gomez from Anderlecht, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano.

The Sky Blues will shell out around £10million to sign the Spaniard, who scored six and assisted 11 in Belgium last season.

It remains to be seen whether Pep Guardiola will phase the 21-year-old into his first team or send him on loan to Spanish side Girona.

City parted company with left-back Oleksandr Zinchenko earlier this summer.

Palace eye Gallagher reunion

Crystal Palace are interested in taking Chelsea youngster Conor Gallagher on another season-long loan, according to The Daily Mail .

The midfielder spent last season on loan at Selhurst Park, scoring eight goals and providing three assists.

He is known to be keen on breaking into the Chelsea first team, rather than trying his luck elsewhere on a permanent basis, but game time could become a factor in the lead-up to this winter’s World Cup.

Gallagher emerged from the bench in injury time against Everton at the weekend and may find it hard to squeeze past Jorginho, N’Golo Kante and Mateo Kovacic in the pecking order.

Diop and Damsgaard both done deals

Fulham and Brentford have completed the signings of Issa Diop and Mikkel Damsgaard respectively.

Diop arrives at Craven Cottage in a £15million deal after asking to miss West Ham’s clash with Manchester City on Sunday.

Damsgaard, meanwhile, arrives at the Brentford Community Stadium after an injury-hit season with Sampdoria. Bees fans will hope that he can rediscover the form that saw him light up Euro 2020. His transfer fee is believed to be in the region of £12m and he has signed a five-year deal.

Chelsea’s double deal

Chelsea co-owner and head of transfer negotiations Todd Boehly opened talks for Marc Cucurella and Carney Chukwumueka at an informal dinner he hosted with Premier League bigwigs last month, according to The Athletic .

The American only recently took the reins at Chelsea after previous owner Roman Abramovich was hit with UK government sanctions.

And he is evidently keen to make a splash this summer, having forked out for a raft of new signings.

A £62million deal for Cucurella and a £20m package for Chukwuemeka were supposedly kick-started at Boehly’s dinner, during which he hosted Brighton and Aston Villa chiefs Paul Barber and Christian Purslow, among others.

Frenkie de Jong’s agent is in Barcelona today for a crunch meeting to decide his future, according to Sport.

Manchester United and Chelsea will eagerly await the outcome, having both registered a strong interest in the Dutchman this summer.

De Jong supposedly wants to stay at Barcelona, but they are demanding that he takes a massive pay cut.

Fans waited for him to arrive at training on Wednesday before shouting: “Lower your salary, b****!”

Leeds threaten to steal Man Utd target

Leeds are close to reaching a verbal agreement with Manchester United target Ismaila Sarr, according to Foot Mercato.

The Red Devils watched the Watford star in action this week as Erik ten Hag surveys his attacking transfer options.

Sarr has impressed at Premier League level but faces spending another season in the Championship with Watford.

Leeds are still believed to be in the market for a winger after parting company with Raphinha earlier this summer.

Man Utd snubbed by Werner

Manchester United held talks with Timo Werner before the Chelsea flop instead opted to re-sign for RB Leipzig, according to Bild .

United boss Erik ten Hag was reportedly open to the idea of working with Werner, whose time in the Premier League was fraught with criticism as he failed to live up to his prior goal-scoring exploits in the Bundesliga.

Werner is currently on the verge of re-joining Leipzig in an initial £17million deal, with Chelsea taking a hefty loss on the £45m they forked out two years ago.

Everton exploring Che Adams deal

It’s all happening at Goodison Park today…

It emerged earlier that the Toffees were in talks to sign Rennes frontman Serhou Guirassy on a season-long loan.

Everton are supposedly pushing for a loan-to-buy arrangement for Adams, who scored seven Premier League goals in 30 matches last term.

Man Utd to persevere with De Jong

Manchester United are yet to completely withdraw their interest in Frenkie de Jong, according to The Telegraph .

Many expect the Red Devils to down tools after months of trying to convince the Dutchman, particularly with Chelsea rumoured to be his preferred destination if he is to leave Barcelona.

But a tell-tale sign of United giving up would reportedly be a switch of focus to Lazio star Sergej Milinkovic-Savic, who is thought to be an alternative to the Barca maestro.

Nothing concrete has developed on that front, suggesting that there is still a flicker of life in the De Jong saga.

Everton in talks to loan striker

Everton are reportedly in talks with Rennes striker Serhou Guirassy as boss Frank Lampard looks for an answer to his attacking shortage.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin is currently out injured and Anthony Gordon was forced to play through the middle against Chelsea at the weekend.

Guirassy could be frozen out at Rennes, who are on the verge of signing PSG striker Arnaud Kalimuendo.

The 6ft 2in Guinea international, 26, scored 11 goals in all competitions last season and bagged 13 the season before that.

Inflation steers budget shoppers away from Walmart

August 12, 2022 by brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Walmart Inc could face an uphill battle to reclaim U.S. shoppers who opted for the neighborhood dollar store or Aldi rather than driving farther to a Walmart Supercenter when gasoline was USD 5 a gallon.

While gasoline prices have dropped nearly 20 per cent over the past month, there are no signs shoppers are returning to the nation’s biggest retailer, according to foot traffic data reviewed by Reuters and analysts.

Inflation remains at a 40-year high, devouring a large chunk of the grocery budgets of many Americans, especially Walmart’s legions of cost-conscious shoppers.

Foot traffic at Walmart’s 3,573 U.S. Supercenters and its 370 discount stores (as of Jan. 31, 2022) fell 2.7 per cent on average from June 1 through July 25 versus a year earlier, according to data from Placer.ai, a location analytics firm.

Meanwhile, traffic rose 11.5 per cent at Aldi, owned by German discount grocer Aldi Sud, and the number of shopper visits climbed 4.1 per cent at Dollar General.

The question of how to reverse the loss in foot traffic will likely be a focus for analysts when Walmart reports second-quarter earnings on Aug. 16.

It may not be easy – or cheap.

Burt Flickinger , managing director of Strategic Resource Group , said Walmart needs to invest more in local advertisements to lure people back into stores.

Cutting back on local newspaper ads has become Walmart’s “Achilles heel,” Flickinger said. If the company wants customers to return, Walmart must spend more money on “high-value ads” that highlight promotions and rollbacks.

Walmart shoppers have a median household income of USD 73,000, according to data from Numerator, a consumer insights firm.

In June, inflation reached 9.1 per cent, a four-decade record, while gasoline prices soared to USD 5.006 a gallon on average (June 13), up from USD 3.161 a year earlier, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Higher gas prices shaved hundreds of dollars off the monthly spending budgets of the typical low-income American, according to several economists.

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon has previously characterized the retailer as an “inflation-fighter” and a top destination for shoppers in recessionary periods. But Walmart’s share as the first choice for grocery purchases dropped to 25.5 per cent in July, from 27.4 per cent in June, according to a Prosper Insights & Analytics monthly consumer survey cited in a Cowen & Co note.

McMillon recently told investors that shoppers – especially from lower-income households – bought fewer items in the three months through April 30, even they also consolidated their trips to the store in response to higher fuel prices.

Monthly spending on gas in July rose to 5.57 per cent of the income of a typical American household – which earns USD 5,412 per month post-tax – up from 2.79 per cent of income in December 2019, according to GlobalData. Poorer households generally spend a bigger portion of their incomes on gas and essentials.

Walmart Supercenters, which average about 190,000 square feet (17,651.6 square meters) and sell groceries and deli items, alongside clothing, home products, and electronics, tend to be located outside of major metropolitan areas, requiring many shoppers to drive at least several miles. Supercenters do not sell gas.

SAVE MONEY, SHOP CLOSER

Both Walmart and Target Corp issued profit warnings over the past two months, noting that U.S. shoppers responded to the rising cost of living by buying primarily lower-margin food and other essentials, while skipping aisles filled with clothes and sporting goods.

Walmart’s warning in late July was “a diagnostic look at the average American household,” Jefferies analyst Stephanie Wissink said. It showed the squeeze on shoppers’ monthly budgets that also led many to cut back on their trips to grocery stores, she said.

At Target ‘s 1,937 stores, traffic declined from mid-June through the week of July 25, Placer.ai data shows.

While Walmart has an advantage of offering a larger selection, dollar stores’ more convenient locations offer an advantage when fuel prices are high, Jason Benowitz , senior portfolio manager at the Roosevelt Investment Group, said.

Shopper visits to Dollar General stores rose in all weeks of June and for most of July, versus the same period last year, the data shows. Dollar General operates more than 18,400 stores in the United States compared with Walmart’s 5,342 U.S stores, according to its latest annual filing.

Placer.ai did not provide data on other dollar store chains, such as Family Dollar and Dollar Tree. However, its quarterly index for dollar stores shows that foot traffic to discount stores in the second quarter increased 8 per cent year-over-year and jumped 13.2 per cent compared with the last quarter.

“The driving distance for a typical shopper across much of the U.S. may be twice as far to reach the nearest Walmart as compared to a dollar store,” Benowitz said.

Demand for grocery in US delivery cools as food costs rise

Grocery delivery saw tremendous growth during the first year of the pandemic. In August 2019 – a typical pre-pandemic month – Americans spent $500 million on grocery delivery. By June 2020, it had ballooned to a $3.4 billion business, according to Brick Meets Click, a market research company.

Own labels turn hot sellers for apparel, grocery retailers

Most retailers, especially in the food and grocery segment, introduce their own cut-price versions or private labels of mass-produced products to earn higher margins but also offer consumers lower priced options. Unlike fast moving consumer goods, which have seen sales decline, lifestyle retailers have posted double-digit growth despite price hikes.

Walmart ponders streaming deal with Paramount, Disney and Comcast

Executives from Paramount, Walt Disney Co and Comcast Corp, which operate several major streaming services, have in recent weeks spoken with the U.S. retail giant, according to the report.
