Ghaziabad Development Authority is revisiting the proposal for the Noida Electronic City-Sahibabad metro line to connect the RapidX corridor in Ghaziabad with the metro’s Blue and Red lines. The project, which had been put on hold due to high costs, is now being considered again. GDA is exploring funding options, including obtaining a loan from the NCR Planning Board.
While funding remains a key hurdle, GDA is considering obtaining a loan from the NCR Planning Board to finance this crucial corridor. To move forward, GDA has decided to commission a fresh detailed project report (DPR) from the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). The DMRC had previously submitted a project report in 2018, estimating the cost of the corridor at Rs 1,517 crore. However, the lack of funding stalled progress, prompting GDA to explore alternative ideas, such as the metro neo, before ultimately discarding them, as explained by RK Singh, the vice-chairperson of GDA told TOI.
In June, the project was revived with a new plan that proposed connecting Electronic City and Vaishali on DMRC’s Blue line. This plan involved a 5.8-km metro line via Indirapuram, and a joint survey was conducted by DMRC and GDA. However, during a recent meeting between GDA and DMRC officials, they reverted to the original route that aimed to integrate Sahibabad RapidX station with Noida.
RK Singh emphasized the importance of multi-modal integration, which necessitated the change in the route plan. As a result, the Electronic City to Vaishali corridor is currently off the table.
The primary challenge remains securing the necessary funding. The state government rejected GDA’s proposed funding ratio of 50:20:30, which would have been shared by the state, Centre, and other agencies like GDA, GMC, and UP Housing Board, respectively. To address this issue, GDA plans to seek a loan of approximately Rs 500 crore from the NCR Planning Board.
Singh pointed out that GDA had previously taken an Rs 800 crore loan from the Board for the Hindon Elevated Road project and had already reimbursed 90% of the loan amount. Therefore, seeking a fresh loan is seen as a viable option.
While any proposal to connect the RapidX corridor with two busy metro corridors promises significant public benefits and enhanced ridership, extending the Blue Line from Electronic City, Noida’s terminal station, would still leave a gap of less than 2 km between RapidX’s Sahibabad station and Vaishali, the terminal station of the Blue Line in Ghaziabad. Another proposed extension aims to link Vaishali with the Red Line at Mohan Nagar.
