LG A1 OLED price, release date and specs

March 29, 2021 by www.techradar.com Leave a Comment

What is the LG A1 OLED? The announcement of a new budget OLED TV model came as a surprise over the CES 2021 expo, seemingly replacing the B Series televisions we’ve seen in previous years ( LG BX , LG B9 , etc). But what exactly does LG Electronics have planned for its new entry-level OLED , and why should you care?

LG makes some of the best and most popular OLED televisions made today. Its CX OLED from 2020 comfortably topped our best OLED TV guide, and the step-down B Series has long been a smart choice for those wanting a premium picture at a more accessible price point.

It’s curious to see an even cheaper A Series model released then, and smart shoppers will be looking to it for OLED at an even more affordable price – with a few compromises, no doubt.

We now also have pricing and release dates , which gives us a good sense of what’s to come worldwide – though we’ll be sure to update and expand it as LG reveals more about its new A1 OLED TV.

Note that we don’t have any confirmed imagery of the LG A1 yet, so any pictures features in this article will be for older, existing LG TVs.

LG A1 OLED specs and features

The most important thing to know is that the LG A1 OLED will be the lowest-spec (and therefore cheapest) OLED TV put out by LG this year.

Much sounds similar to last year’s B Series, with a step-down a7 processor rather than the a9 Gen 4 AI chip used in the C1 and G1 OLEDs. The a7 isn’t quite as advanced (hence the price drop), and tends to lead to more banding and video noise in dark scenes, but it still makes for a generally favorable picture.

We also know that the A1 will support Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby Atmos audio, and come with 20W of built-in audio.

The two key differences between the A Series and B Series seems to be that the former is a bit quieter (20W rather than the latter’s 40W), and doesn’t support HDMI 2.1 (a feature you will find in the LG BX, and this year’s new C1 / G1 models).

HDMI 2.1 is needed for a host of gamer-centric features like 4K/120Hz gameplay, as well as VRR (variable refresh rate), so the A1 probably won’t be a TV of choice for those hoping to get max performance out of their PS5 or Xbox Series X .

LG A1 OLED pricing, release date and sizes

The LG A1 OLED will be available starting in April for $1,599 / £1,399 (around AU$2,100) at a 55-inch size – though the smaller and cheaper 48-inch model will launch shortly after in June for just $1,299 / £1,099 (around AU$1,700). There’s also a 65-inch size and 77-inch size, retailing for $2,199 / £2,099 (around AU$2,900) and $3,199 / £3,699 (around AU$4,200) respectively.

In the UK, the 77-inch size is available in April, but US shoppers will have to wait until June.

The pricing isn’t quite what we expected, given the launch price for the 55-inch model is technically higher than last year’s BX OLED , which was the cheapest 2020 LG OLED at $1,399 / £1,299 / AU$2,995 at 55 inches.

The 48-inch size does offer a low starting point, though it’s not quite as competitive as some may have hoped, given the A Series is meant to undercut the B Series model.

There are more screen sizes for OLED releasing this year, of course, with a new 83-inch size that will come to the LG C1, though not the A1 at present. We’ve heard from LG Display – the panel supplier for LG Electronics’ OLED televisions – that a new 42-inch OLED is on its way too, though it’s yet to be confirmed for any specific 2021 TVs.

What does ‘A1’ really mean?

For those not au fait with LG lingo, the ‘A1’ is the specific product number applied to this year’s A Series OLED.

The letter ‘A’ denotes the television series (alongside ‘B’, ‘C’, ‘G’, and the now-discontinued ‘E’ Series), while the number corresponds to the year of release. In 2019, these numbers were all ‘9’, as in ‘C9’ or ‘B9’; in 2020, the number became ‘X’ (‘ten’), while 2021 is resetting to ‘1’.

The Oregon Trail on Apple Arcade review: A classic game brought into the the world modern mobile gaming

April 16, 2021 by www.imore.com Leave a Comment

The Oregon Trail was originally a 1971 text-based strategy game that some people can likely remember playing on their Apple II — feel old yet? Well, the good news is you don’t have to. In the last few weeks, Apple Arcade got an influx of new games added to the service , with a few classic games that getting the modern age treatment — The Oregon Trail was among them.

Even if you haven’t played the original game — I never did — The Oregon Trail offers a ton of fun. Every decision, no matter how small, can affect what happens to your wagon and intrepid travelers. It’s this tense push-your-luck element to the game that kept me coming back for more, even though after a while, the gameplay did get a tad repetitive.

The Oregon Trail review:

  • What I don’t like
  • Should you play?

The Oregon Trail

Bottom line: Whether you want to play on your iPhone, iPad, Mac, or Apple TV, The Oregon Trail brings a pop-culture classic into the modern mobile gaming world.

The Oregon Trail: What I like

The Oregon Trail Traveling

Nostalgia can be a pretty strong drug, especially when it comes to gaming. Even though I haven’t played the original The Oregon Trail, it’s such a pop-culture icon that the game still feels slightly nostalgic. When your characters get injured, come down with dysentery, your wagon breaks down for the hundredth time; you can’t help but point at the screen and smile. I would imagine that if you have played the original, you’ll likely find a healthy dose of nostalgia. The good news is that the game is fun regardless of what level of nostalgia you’re experiencing. It’s full of tiny decisions that can make or break your mission to reach Oregon.

Coming from its text-based background, the gameplay in the Oregon Trail is mostly about making decisions. Which path do you take to reach your destination? What speed do you travel? Which supplies do you buy now, and which ones can you hold off and get later down the road? Even after playing for only a few minutes, you may have already made a dozen little decisions. While that may sound fatiguing, the game combats this by making every decision have a meaning.

Every decision matters, no matter how small.

When you’re on the trail and one of your adventurers comes down with a fever, you have to decide whether you should treat it with medicine (which should help cure the ailment quicker) or let it run its course — did you buy medicine before you left the last camp? How much medicine do you have left? A fever can run its course, and the inflicted member can be fine, or their condition can become much worse and even result in death. The tension comes from knowing that the next issue you need to solve is just around the corner. Maybe your wagon starts to break down, or you find out you’re running out of food. You have to choose your moments to push your luck carefully, because one wrong decision can quickly snowball into a disaster.

On top of the tension, the game provides some pretty beautiful visuals, which help the game become more than just a wall of text. The gorgeous bright blue sky when the weather is nice, the sunsets when you’re making camp in the evening are beautiful, and even the snowstorms that plague you later in the trail all look gorgeous. The art style combines a bit of a newer aesthetic with an old sort of 16-bit graphic style, a nice visual representation of what The Oregon Trail does: makes a classic new again.

Lastly, not that the game requires them, but it does fully support controllers. This makes playing the game on your Mac or Apple TV a much better experience and gives you the option to go hands-free with your iPhone and iPad. If you prefer grabbing your best game controller to play your mobile game titles, I like that even a game as simple as The Oregon Trail made that an option.

As the game progresses, especially the “campaign,” you will find that it can become a bit repetitive. Your wagon will break down a lot, your characters will get sick a lot, and you may even run out of food quite often. If that sort of thing bothers you, The Oregon Trail may not be for you, but then again, many mobile games can be repetitive.

Gameplay can become repetitive,

I don’t think this is a huge detriment to The Oregon Trail because the fun comes from knowing all the challenges that could arise on your journey, trying to prepare for them the best you can, and then see if you can overcome all the obstacles that do come your way. It’s the very nature of the game. Plus, there are different game modes to explore if you don’t necessarily always want to play the “campaign” all the time, and as you progress in your journey, new obstacles get thrown your way as well.

4.5 out of 5

I’m constantly impressed at the quality of the games you find on Apple Arcade , and The Oregon Trail is no exception.

Gameloft managed to take a pop-culture classic and breathe new life into a game that’s been around since before I was born. If you have any nostalgia for the original, The Oregon Trail is likely going to feel very familiar but also offer a new way of experiencing such a classic title, but you don’t need nostalgia to enjoy the game — it’s that fun.

If you haven’t tried Apple Arcade yet, this is a solid choice as your first Apple Arcade title. If you are an Apple Arcade subscriber, I definitely think The Oregon Trail is worth your time. Have fun and try not to die from dysentery!

The Oregon Trail

Bottom line: The Oregon Trail offers beautiful visuals and makes you think about every decision you make. While the gameplay loop can become a tad repetitive, different game modes and new challenges keep it feeling pretty fresh even after hours of play.

Genshin Impact PS5 Upgrade, 1.5 Update Release On April 28

April 16, 2021 by www.gamespot.com Leave a Comment

Genshin Impact ‘s 1.5 version update Beneath the Light of Jaeite and PS5 upgrade will launch on April 28, developer Mihoyo has announced. As shown in a new trailer detailing the upcoming content, version 1.5 will add a new Trounce Domain, boss enemy, characters, and a fancy teapot.

Version 1.5 will also give players a chance to continue the hangout story with Noelle and Diona, the bartender of The Cat’s Tail in Mondstadt. Eula, a Spindrift Knight from Mondstadt, and Yanfei, a legal adviser from Liyue Harbor, are being added to the game as new playable characters.

Eula is a five-star character, a claymore-user, bearer of a Cryo Vision, as well the Captain of the Knights of Favonius Reconnaissance Company.

Her elemental skill, Icetide Vortex, increases her resistance to interruption and her defense when she deals Cryo damage, while her elemental burst attack creates an area of effect Cryo damage to nearby enemies and spawns a Lightfall Sword that further increases her resistance to interruption.

Yanfei is a half-human and half-illuminated beast from Liyue and will be available as a four-star Pyro-using catalyst-wielder. She can create Scarlet Seals with her normal attack, which provides a stackable buff that decreases Yanfei’s Stamina consumption and can be consumed to increase the power and range of her charged attacks.

New enemies include Azhdaha, the Lord of Vishaps. This beast can change the environment of the battlefield in its Trounce Domain, which players can explore in pursuit of weekly rewards if they survive the encounter with the beast. A new boss-level Cryo Hypostasis has also been discovered in Dragonspine, and players must also be wary of the Abyss Lector: Violet Lightning that prefers to use ranged attacks and has Electro and Hydro-powered attacks in its arsenal.

On a more relaxing note, players now have a chance to get their hands on a Serenitea Pot from Madame Ping, which will allow them to enter a new realm and build their dream home. As the owner of the Serenitea Pot, players will be prompted to choose from several realm styles such as Floating Abode, Emerald Peak, and Cool Isle to build their home away from home, each one featuring a Mondstadt- or Liyue-style building with several indoor rooms.

Remodeling will require discovering various furnishing blueprints around Teyvat, and the more furnishings you make, the more Trust resources you can earn from Tubby the teapot spirit. Once your Trust Rank is high enough, Tubby will help you switch realm layouts if you’re interested in a new design.

On a technical level, gameplay optimizations include double the amount of Companionship XP for gameplay completed in co-op mode, new seasonal challenges, and upcoming events that will be detailed at a later date. The PS5 version of Genshin Impact that will arrive with Version 1.5 comes with 4K resolution, enhanced textures, and faster loading times.

Genshin Impact Coming To PS5 With Enhanced Visuals And Loading Times

April 2, 2021 by www.gamespot.com Leave a Comment

Open-world action RPG Genshin Impact will soon receive a PlayStation 5 upgrade, developer miHoYo has announced. This version of the popular free-to-play game will feature a 4K resolution with enhanced textures across every part of the game, faster load times, higher image quality, and performance, according to the developer.

“The PlayStation 5 is an ideal platform to enhance the vast open-world featuring in Genshin Impact, allowing the team to incorporate more thoughts and ideas into the game, both now and in the future,” miHoYo president Forrest Liu said in a press release. “That’s why we’ve been working to bring the native PlayStation 5 version of the game to our players as soon as we could.”

Currently available on PC, PS4, and mobile devices, Genshin Impact has been a massive success since it launched last year and is the fastest mobile game to reach $1 billion in player revenue through the iOS App Store and the Google Play store. A surge in player spending has also been recorded recently with the return of fan-favorite warrior Venti , who joins Genshin Impact’s roster of post-launch content and characters available through an extremely profitable gacha-style system.

The game has been so popular that a recent KFC promotion that asked fans to visit the fast-food outlet in China and yell “Meet in another world, enjoy delicious food!” to the staff in exchange for merchandise had to be shut down over COVID-19 protocol violations.
