Indian Railways take quick action after video of man smoking in train goes viral

February 6, 2023 by economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Synopsis

In response to the viral video of a young man smoking in a train coach, Indian Railways acted quickly, and an RPF agent showed up at the berth to issue a warning.

A video of a man smoking in front of children and elderly passengers on a moving train led to Railway Police to rush to the railway coach and stop the smoker. Since the video has been posted, it has gained a lot of traction online. A passenger, who shared the video, wrote, “when everyone was stopping him, the passenger started abusing them while lighting cigarettes in front of children and senior citizens. Coach S-5, Seats 39–40, Train No. 14322.” He also requested for immediate action to the incident.

As soon as the tweet went viral, the Indian Railways responded and asked the passenger to share the mobile number and trip information (PNR/UTS number) with them via direct message. The fellow passenger was also advised to contact RPF India directly on http://railmadad.indianrailways.gov.in or by calling 139 for prompt resolution.

A short while later, the complainant tweeted that Railway Police Force (RPF) officers had arrived at Rajasthan’s Bandikui station. Social media users responded to the event and its swift resolution. While some criticised the accused, others praised the Railways for responding quickly. A user wrote that these passengers needed to be detained for putting both public property and countless lives at danger. While another hailed the power of Digital India and thanked Indian Railways.

Taiwanese pop star dances to Vietnamese viral hit

February 6, 2023 by e.vnexpress.net Leave a Comment

Tsai uploaded the video on Instagram, which shows her dancing to “See Tinh” with friends, in early May, and it was shared widely on social media and forums. Many of her fans downloaded the video as they love her dancing. Tsai’s fanpage manager credits “See Tinh” in the caption for the video: “Jolin Tsai’s first show in the new year is a dance to Hoang Thuy Linh’s viral song on Douyin.” Douyin is the Chinese version of TikTok.

Tsai, 43, is the most successful singer in Taiwan. Dubbed the “Queen of C-Pop”, she is considered one of the most influential artists in Chinese pop culture. She’s also credited as a key figure in mainstream dance-pop music in China.

The “See Tinh” fever is continuing to spread on Douyin and other video platforms in China. For its virality, the Chinese media called it a “superhit.” Videos of people using and dancing to this tune have exceeded four billion views. Many people said they feel like this song is everywhere recently. The fans love “See Tinh” for its catchy melody and adorable choreography.

The song is also trending in Japan, South Korea, Malaysia and Thailand. Japanese singer Shayne Orok covered the song on YouTube and got more than a million views.

Many athletes also chose “See Tinh” to celebrate during games. On Saturday, Huynh Nhu, the captain of Vietnam national women’s football team, danced to the song after scoring for Portuguese club Lank Vilaverdense. On January 31, two South Korean volleyball athletes Lee Da-heyon and Kim Yeon-koung danced together during a game. The video garnered 37 million views on TikTok.

“See Tinh” is the second single from Hoang Thuy Linh’s fourth studio album “LINK,” which was released in February 2022. The music for this dance-pop anthem was inspired by the culture of the Mekong Delta region.

The benchmark FTSE 100 index of top British companies beat almost every other stock market in the world last year, and is still roaring away in 2023.

While riskier stock markets like the New York’s Nasdaq index of technology stocks fell by a third last year, the FTSE 100 actually climbed as investors sought a safer home for their money.

London’s index contains a host of rock solid blue-chip companies, including oil giants BP and Shell, big banks Barclays and Lloyds, and mining companies like Rio Tinto, all of which have been in demand lately.

The index has rallied by more than 1,000 points since October, a rise of 18 percent, adding more than £300billion to share values.

Victoria Scholar, head of investment at fund platform Interactive Investor, said: “Despite last year’s equity market volatility and a slowing global economy, the FTSE 100 is defying the doom and gloom.”

Millions of Britons will be celebrating news that it hit a record high of 7,906.58 on Friday, the highest since May 2018.

Ordinary savers who invest directly in FTSE 100 stocks or hold them in a pension or stocks and shares Isa fund, see their capital grow when the index rises.

They also benefit from the regular dividends that companies listed on the index pay shareholders as a reward for holding their stock.

FTSE 100 companies pay some of the most generous dividends in the world, with an expected income yield of 4.5 percent this year.

That beats the return on every savings account right now, with any share price growth on top.

While investing in stocks and shares is riskier than depositing money into a cash savings account, history shows that over the longer run the rewards are much greater.

And despite its recent success, investment experts reckon FTSE 100 large-cap equities are still “a bargain on our own doorstep”.

Jason Hollands, managing director of online investment platform Bestinvest, said this is quite a moment as UK equities fly to fresh highs. “The FTSE 100 was the best-performing major equity index globally in 2022 and still looks well placed for the year ahead.”

He added: “The latest spike has been fuelled by optimism that an end to rate hikes is in sight amid signs that inflation has peaked.”

Many people will be confused to see the FTSE 100 on a high at such a difficult time for the UK, but Hollands says this is a highly international market. “Companies listed on the index collectively generate nearly 79 percent of their revenues outside of the UK.”

It is also famed as a defensive sector, as it contains energy companies like BP and Shell, healthcare firms like AstraZeneca and Glaxo, companies selling consumer staples such as Unilever, and cigarette makers including British American Tobacco.

Demand for their products typically holds up in a recession.

The FTSE 100 has minimal exposure to technology, which was seen as its Achilles’ heel until recently, Hollands said. “That is now working in its favour as tech giants like Amazon, Netflix, Meta Platforms (formerly Facebook) and Tesla all crashed last year.”

Hollands said some may fear UK shares are now too expensive but banking profits today could prove a mistake. “UK larger-company shares are still attractively valued, a bargain on our own doorstep. Valuations are a third cheaper than the rest of the world.”

That 4.5 percent dividend yield looks attractive as rates on cash deposits appear to have peaked in recent weeks , while 10-year UK government bonds, known as gilts, yield just 3.05 percent, Hollands added.

“This whopping yield premium strengthens the case for investing in UK large-cap stocks.”

He said that one of the simplest ways to get exposure is via a low-cost index tracking fund such as the iShares Core FTSE 100 UCITS ETF, which has an annual charge of just 0.07 percent.

While shares are one of the best performing investments of all over the longer run, the short term can be volatile. Neither share price growth nor dividends are guaranteed.

Pension and Isa investors should only put money in the stock market for a minimum period of five years, and ideally much longer.

Turkish YouTuber trapped under earthquake rubble pleas for help in video

February 6, 2023 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

A Turkish YouTuber hit by the 7.8-magnitude earthquake on February 6 has made a video begging for help for his mother, who he says remains trapped under the rubble of her home.

Firat Yayla, who goes by the name CharmQuell on his social-media channels, shared the footage online desperately begging for rescue and news of his mother. The clip, which was filmed in darkness, shows Yayla sobbing as he addresses the camera.

It was posted after the devastating quake rocked the region in the early hours of Monday, near the Syrian border—killing hundreds of people in both countries, with the death toll expected to grow far higher.

Yayla is a gaming YouTuber, who usually posts videos about computer games to his channel’s 569,000 subscribers.

A translation of his YouTube bio reads: “I’m just an ordinary person walking past you on the pavement. My name is Fırat and I started to produce content on social media when I was a child in the 2010s.

“I managed Turkey’s biggest game page on Instagram for 6 years. Now here I am doing what I always wanted to do. I tell stories on the Internet and put what’s on my mind into videos. I hope you like it. Love to you all :)”

His clip was retweeted hundreds of times, and although it’s unclear exactly when and where he was during his filming, some of the people sharing it wrote that Yayla was also trapped when he shot the footage.

In the shaky clip, he gives the address of his mother’s destroyed house and said that he was anxiously waiting to hear from her. According to a translated account of an article on the Turkish news website Mynet, Yayla said: “Mom, are you okay? Mom, please say ‘I hid under the bed.’ Please help. We have a destroyed building.”

This is a developing story. Newsweek has reached out to Yayla and the Turkish authorities for further information.

Thousands are feared dead after the earthquake struck near the Turkish-Syrian border overnight. The huge 7.8-magnitude tremor was felt as far away as Lebanon, Egypt, and Cyprus.

The quake hit at 4:17 a.m. local time, when most people were asleep in bed. The ground shook so violently that windows were blown out and hundreds of buildings collapsed. A huge rescue effort is now underway to rescue the hundreds of victims still trapped in the rubble of their homes.

More than 500 people have been officially confirmed dead so far, but it is feared the total will continue to climb as rescue and recovery efforts get underway. Data from the United States Geological Survey said the true number of fatalities is likely to be in the thousands, with a death toll of between 1,000 and 10,000 most likely.

Second massive earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hits Turkey as death toll surpasses 1,400

February 6, 2023 by economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Synopsis

Turkey is rattled as two powerful earthquakes of 7.8 and 7.5 magnitudes in less than 12 hours wiping out entire sections of major cities.

A second powerful earthquake of 7.5 magnitude hit southeast Turkey on Monday afternoon, according to US Geological Survey just a few hours after a previous earthquake killed over 1,400 people in the region. USGS stated that the epicentre for the earthquake was some miles from Ekinözü which is a town in the Mediterranean region.

The depth of the earthquake was recorded to be six miles, which proved more devastating as shallow earthquakes rock the region more significantly. According to the map, the tremor was felt across the border in Aleppo along with its surrounding areas.

The earthquake swept out entire sections of major Turkish cities in a region filled with millions of people who fled the Syrian civil war.
