United’s hopes of adding the FA Cup to their League Cup and winning a treble this season appeared in danger when Aleksandar Mitrovic put Fulham ahead after half-time.

But the game turned on its head in an extraordinary two-minute period in which Fulham lost two players, their manager and the lead.

The drama began when a United counter-attacked culminated in former Arsenal and Chelsea winger Willian blocking Jadon Sancho’s shot on the line with his right arm.

Referee Chris Kavanagh initially missed the infringement but was sent to the pitchside monitor by VAR and gave Willian his marching orders.

In the process of going to the monitor, Kavanagh dismissed a fuming Fulham boss Marco Silva, and after returning to the pitch he sent off Mitrovic who grabbed the referee as he protested the decisions.

On William’s red card – which led to dismissals to Silva and Mitrovic – Ten Hag added: ‘It was so clear and obvious.

‘Handball in the box is a clear penalty. But it’s not for me to comment on them. It’s for me to talk about Manchester United and that’s it.’

Ten Hag also heaped praise on Manchester United loanee Sabitzer, who scored his first goal for the club to give the hosts the lead shortly after Fulham’s implosion.

‘He had a great performance,’ Ten Hag said of the Bayern Munich midfielder. ‘We are glad he is back from injury.

‘We will be playing a game every three days between now and the end of the season so we need as many fit players as possible.’

Ten Hag, who guided Manchester United to their first trophy since 2017 last month, added: ‘We are through, we are happy with the win.

‘We showed great character. Every time this team comes out, they show the personality and the determination needed.

‘Fulham are a good team and you have to be good to overcome them. I think we had a good first half. We had great moments in the attacking transition and we should have been two or three goals up.

‘This team has great character. We are mentally and physically fit, and I’m happy with our progress as a team.’

The Red Devils will face Brighton in the FA Cup semi-finals, while Premier League champions Manchester City take on Sheffield United.

‘The next game is a long way away,’ Ten Hag said. ‘The players will go away on the international break while we analyse the recent period. Then it’s about Newcastle, Brentford and Everton.’

Team USA score: U.S. cruises past Cuba to reach World Baseball Classic final as Trea Turner homers twice

March 20, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

Team USA is one win away from a second consecutive World Baseball Classic championship. Sunday night in Miami, Team USA cruised to a 14-2 blowout win over Cuba ( box score ) to clinch a spot in Tuesday’s championship game. USA will face the winner of Monday night’s Japan vs. Mexico game. Cuba has been eliminated.

USA is the third team to appear in back-to-back WBC championship games, joining Japan (2006 and 2009) and Puerto Rico (2013 and 2017). They will look to join those 2006 and 2009 Japan teams as the only back-to-back champions in WBC history. Before winning the 2017 WBC, USA advanced no further than the second round in the 2006, 2009, and 2013 WBCs.

Sunday’s game is believed to be the first time the Cuban national team played in Miami since the Cuban revolution in 1959. Miami is home to the largest Cuban population in the U.S. and there were protests condemning the island’s dictatorship outside the ballpark. Three separate fans also ran onto the field during play with signs and flags.

Here are three takeaways from Sunday’s game and a look ahead to what’s next.

1. Cuba missed a golden opportunity early

Is the first inning too early for a turning point? I don’t think so. Cuba loaded the bases in the top of the first inning on three infield singles, and when cleanup hitter Alfredo Despaigne spit on Adam Wainwright’s 3-2 curveball to draw the bases loaded walk and give Cuba a 1-0 lead, it appeared Cuba was primed to put a crooked number on the board. It was a Big Moment early.

Rather than let Cuba blow the game open, Wainwright & Co. limited Cuba to just that one run. A ground ball to third base (force out at home), a pop up to second, and a ground ball to short snuffed out the rally and limited the damage. And three batters into the bottom of the first, it was 2-1 USA. Mookie Betts doubled, Mike Trout lined out, and Paul Goldschmidt went deep.

Cuba’s win expectancy sat at 74% following Despaigne’s RBI walk. That’s a big number for the first inning. Another big number: 2.37. That is the number of runs MLB teams averaged following a bases loaded, no outs situation last season. Rather than put a (needed) dent in the scoreboard Cuba, settled for just the one run. That inning was a huge missed opportunity.

Despaigne, it should be noted, now owns that longest on-base streak in WBC history. The first inning bases loaded walk extended his on-base streak to 18 games dating back to 2009. Robinson Canó held the previous record at 17 games.

2. USA kept piling on

Two runs in the first, one run in the second, two runs in the third, two runs in the fourth, two runs in the fifth, four runs in the sixth. USA scored in each of the first six innings, thanks in part to Trea Turner’s second inning solo home run. He of course hit the clutch game-winning grand slam against Venezuela on Saturday . Here is Turner’s second homer in as many WBC at-bats:

Turner, the $300 million No. 9 hitter, added another home run later in the game and is 7 for 19 (.368) with four home runs in the WBC. The four home runs lead this year’s WBC and are the most by a USA player in a single WBC. Here is the single-WBC home run leaderboard:

  1. Seung-Yuop Lee, Korea: 5 HR in 2006
  2. Adrián Beltré, Dominican Republic: 4 HR in 2006
  3. Wladimir Balentien, Netherlands: 4 HR in 2017
  4. Trea Turner, USA: 4 HR in 2023 (and counting)

Turner is the second Team USA player with two homers in a WBC game, joining Hall of Famer Ken Griffey Jr. in 2006. Griffey is serving as USA’s hitting coach this year. Turner has dominated in the No. 9 spot and Goldschmidt and Nolan Arenado have been a two-man wrecking crew in the Nos. 3-4 spots. They went a combined 4 for 7 with 5 RBI on Sunday.

All told, Goldschmidt is 7 for 21 (.333) with 9 RBI and more walks (seven) than strikeouts (five) in the WBC. That works out to a .517 on-base percentage. Arenado is 9 for 23 (.391) with three doubles and a triple in the WBC. Like I said, Goldschmidt and Arenado have been a two-man wrecking crew in the middle of the lineup.

It wasn’t until the seventh inning that USA was held scoreless (that was the game’s first 1-2-3 inning). Things got so out of hand that bench players Jeff McNeil (replaced Tim Anderson at second), Bobby Witt Jr. (replaced Arenado at third), Cedric Mullins (replaced Trout in center), and Kyle Higashioka (replaced Will Smith at catcher) got into the game. USA emptied the bench.

Arenado, by the way, exited the game after taking a pitch to the hand in the fifth inning. It appeared to be precautionary — Arenado was seen high-fiving his teammates in the dugout — and X-rays came back negative. Still, that was briefly worrisome after the Jose Altuve injury Saturday .

3. Wainwright settled down

To be fair, Cuba’s first inning rally was hardly Wainwright’s fault. I mean, three straight infield singles? That’s some tough luck. Despaigne put a good at-bat together to work the bases-loaded walk, but after that, Wainwright retired 12 of the final 15 batters he faced, and he got USA through four innings. There was a point it looked like he’d only go four batters .

Now 41, Wainwright did not throw a pitch over 88.6 mph against Cuba, and that’s about the best you’ll see out of him these days. Velocity is not his game. He cuts and sinks his fastball, and still has that Hall of Fame curveball. Cuba was close to breaking the game open in the first inning, but Wainwright escaped, and he continued on to have a strong outing. Solid work by the veteran.

The WBC pitch limit is 80 in the semifinal, though Wainwright was pulled after 64 pitches, possibly because of a mandate set by the Cardinals. Wainwright gave way to St. Louis teammate Miles Mikolas, who gave USA four innings of one-run ball. Aaron Loup got the final three outs in the ninth inning to seal the win and championship game berth.

Team USA’s offense scored early and often and that made life easy on manager Mark DeRosa, who hasn’t exactly stood out for his bullpen management in the WBC. USA’s go-to high leverage relievers (Jason Adam, David Bedner, Devin Williams, and Ryan Pressly) all got the night off and will be well-rested for Tuesday’s championship game.

4. Up next

For Cuba, a trip home. They have been eliminated. For USA, it’s the championship game Tuesday night in Miami. They will take on the winner of Monday night’s Japan vs. Mexico semifinal game. Team USA has not yet announced a starting pitcher and they may not announce one until they know their opponent. It will likely be one of Kyle Freeland, Merrill Kelly, or Brady Singer.

Russia Shrinks Forces in Syria, a Factor in Israeli Strategy There

October 19, 2022 by www.nytimes.com Leave a Comment

JERUSALEM — Russia recently redeployed critical military hardware and troops from Syria, according to three senior officials based in the Middle East, underscoring how its faltering invasion of Ukraine has eroded Moscow’s influence elsewhere and removing one of several obstacles to Israeli support for Ukraine.

Russia, which has been a dominant military force in Syria since 2015 and helps maintain the Syrian regime’s grip on power, still keeps a sizable presence there. But the change could herald wider shifts in the balance of power in one of the world’s most complicated conflict zones, and allow Israel, Syria’s enemy and southern neighbor, to rethink its approach to both Syria and Ukraine.

According to two senior Western diplomats and a senior Israeli defense official, speaking on condition of anonymity in order to speak more freely, Moscow recently transferred some troops and a Russian air-defense system out of Syria, removing one of the main restrictions on Israeli military actions in Syria.

The officials had varying estimates about how many troops were withdrawn — two of them said two battalions, or between 1,200 and 1,600 soldiers, while the other said it was far more. But they all agreed that the number of combat troops had been reduced.

The Israeli official also said that several Russian commanders had been redeployed from Syria to Ukraine, while Russia’s military leadership in Moscow has become less involved in day-to-day management of operations in Syria, including with military coordination with Israel.

The moves follow a reduction of Russian leverage in former Soviet countries in Central Asia , where leaders say the war in Ukraine has distracted Russia from its traditional leadership role, undermining Moscow’s aura and grip.

The State of the War

  • Xi’s Visit to Russia: Xi Jinping, China’s leader, arrived in Moscow to meet with President Vladimir Putin of Russia, a state visit that will highlight their nations’ close ties and will be closely watched by the West .
  • A Defiant Putin: The Russian president visited the occupied Ukrainian city of Mariupol , a move that came shortly after an international court issued a warrant for his arrest for war crimes.
  • A Crime in Progress: The International Criminal Court’s arrest warrant for Putin over the forcible deportation of Ukrainian children highlights a practice that the Kremlin has not concealed and says will continue .
  • Bakhmut: The battle to take the eastern Ukrainian city has been ruthless and hugely costly for both sides, but especially for the Russians , even as they have inched forward.

Since civil war broke out in Syria in 2011, President Bashar al-Assad of Syria has relied on military support from Iran and its proxies to keep rebels at bay, as well as from President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia. Russia has kept a military presence in Syria since the 1970s, but Mr. Putin significantly bolstered it in 2015 with several thousand Russian troops and aircraft, turning the tide of the Syrian war in Mr. Assad’s favor.

An enemy of both Iran and Syria, Israel regularly strikes targets in Syria to prevent Tehran from cementing a foothold close to Israel’s northeastern border. In 2018, the risk to Israeli pilots during those raids increased after Russia moved a sophisticated air-defense system, known as the S-300, to Syria.

Though control of the S-300 was never transferred to the Syrian government, the risk that it might be used against Israeli planes was a major reason Israel has rebuffed Ukrainian requests for military hardware since the Russian invasion began in February.

According to the three officials, Russia has now removed the S-300 system from Syria to bolster its flagging invasion of Ukraine — reducing Russian leverage over Israel in Syria, and altering Israeli considerations with regards to Ukraine.

Iran’s growing military support for Russia, coupled with rising Russian strikes on Ukrainian civilians, have already resurfaced a debate in Israel in recent days about whether Israel should provide arms to Ukraine. Israel produces several air-defense systems that might be useful to Ukraine in shooting down missiles and drones, including the short-range Iron Dome, which Israel uses against rockets fired from the Gaza Strip, and the longer-range Barak 8.

An Israeli cabinet minister, Nachman Shai, said on social media this week that Iran’s military assistance to Russia removed “any doubt where Israel should stand in this bloody conflict. The time has come for Ukraine to receive military aid as well, just as the USA and NATO countries provide.”

But Mr. Shai does not speak for the Israeli government. On Wednesday, the Israeli leadership stressed that while it could provide Kyiv with early-warning systems to alert Ukrainian civilians about incoming strikes, Israel would not send arms to Kyiv.

In a statement, Benny Gantz, the Israeli defense minister said: “Israel supports and stands with Ukraine, NATO and the West — this is something we have said in the past and repeat today.”

“This being said,” he added, “I would like to emphasize that Israel will not deliver weapon systems to Ukraine, due to a variety of operational considerations.”

Those considerations include Russia’s lingering military presence in Syria, including a separate air defense system, the S-400, and large air and naval bases in Western Syria. Though Russia withdrew combat troops from Syria, they have been replaced by military police officers, the senior Israeli defense official said.

Israeli officials have expressed concern that further Russian drawdowns in Syria could allow Iran to expand its influence there.

Israel also wants to avoid any disruption to practices that allows Israeli and Russian commanders to communicate with each other and avoid conflict between their forces. An encrypted telephone line was installed in 2017 to connect a Russian air base in western Syria to an Israeli Air Force command center beneath a military base in Tel Aviv.

The mechanism helps the sides avoid overlap between Russian and Israeli actions, preventing incidents like one in 2018, when Syrian forces shot down a Russian military plane that they had apparently mistaken for Israeli, killing 15 Russians.

Israel also fears that the Kremlin might act to limit Jewish emigration from Russia, after the Russian authorities opened a court case against the Moscow branch of the Jewish Agency , an Israel-based organization that helps Russian Jews establish new lives in Israel.

On Monday, Dmitri A. Medvedev, the deputy head of the Russian security council and former president, warned Israel against any “reckless” supply of military aid to Ukraine. “It will destroy all interstate relations between our countries,” Mr. Medvedev wrote on social media.

Nevertheless, there are signs that Israel is providing more help to Ukraine than it did in the opening months of the war, when its assistance was limited to mainly humanitarian aid, including a field hospital.

Israel is providing Ukraine with basic intelligence about Iranian drones used by Russia, and has also offered to examine the remains of drones that crashed in Ukraine, according to senior Ukrainian and Israeli officials.

Pakistani police on Monday arrested scores more supporters of former Prime Minister Imran Khan for attacking officers over the weekend outside an Islamabad court where the ousted premier was to appear on graft charges, officials said.

Meanwhile, a rocket hit a vehicle carrying Khan supporters in the country’s northwest, killing 10 people .

The arrests were the latest amid legal cases facing Khan, now opposition leader, since his ouster in a no-confidence vote in Parliament last April. The standoff between the 70-year-old former cricket player turned Islamist politician, and the government of his successor, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif, has turned increasingly violent.

Monday’s arrests bring the total number of Khan’s followers detained in Islamabad to 198 since Saturday, when 59 were arrested in the Pakistani capital. Khan’s followers threw firebombs and hurled rocks at the officers as riot police wielded batons and fired tear gas. More than 50 officers were injured and at a police checkpoint, several cars and motorcycles were torched.

A rocket struck a vehicle carrying Khan supporters in the northwest on Monday, killing Atif Munsif, a local leader from Khan’s party, and nine others, officials said. The attack happened in Abbottabad, a district in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, said Asghar Khan, a local police chief unrelated to the former prime minister. He said it was unclear who was behind the attack.

Khan said Munsif’s political rivals were behind previous gun attacks on elders from his family. He said police were investigating. The Khan supporters were apparently returning to Abbottabad from Islamabad.

There was no immediate comment from Khan’s opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf party, which is currently preparing for the upcoming election for a regional assembly in the northwest, where Khan is hugely popular.

Also on Saturday, police stormed Khan’s residence in the eastern city of Lahore, arrested 61 suspects there and seized petrol bombs, weapons and ammunition after clashing with his supporters.

Khan was not at home, having traveled to Islamabad for the court appearance on charges he had sold state gifts received while in office and concealed assets. After he failed to appear before the Islamabad court, the judge postponed that hearing until March 30.

PAKISTANI COURT EXTENDS PAUSE IN EFFORT TO ARREST FORMER PREMIER IMRAN KHAN

Earlier last week, Khan’s residence in Lahore was the scene of two days of clashes between police and his followers when officers attempted to arrest Khan. The warrant was later suspended.

On Sunday, police in Islamabad filed charges against Khan, 17 of his aides and scores of supporters, accusing them of terrorism and offenses related to the clashes in Islamabad the previous day. Police have also charged those arrested later with the same charges. Among the detained is Hassan Niazi, a nephew of Khan, police said in a statement.

Khan denies any wrongdoing and has claimed that his ouster was a conspiracy by Sharif’s government and Washington . Both Sharif and the United States have dismissed the allegations.

Khan has also claimed there are plots to assassinate him since he was wounded last November in a shooting attack while leading a rally, when a gunman sprayed Khan’s vehicle and entourage with bullets. That attack killed one of Khan’s supporters and wounded 13.

On Monday, Khan claimed his scheduled court appearance Saturday in Islamabad was another such plot and promised to provide details later.

“I will expose how I almost walked into a death trap & the plot to kill me in the Judicial Complex,” he tweeted.

Khan in a video message on Monday said he didn’t go to the judicial complex on Saturday to avoid a possible attack. He did not back up his claim and said the government was behind the plot to kill him to avoid a possible defeat in the next parliamentary elections, which are due later this year. He demanded to be allowed to face court cases via video links to avoid any further attack on him.
