Margot Robbie celebrates 32nd birthday on Barbie set with co-star Ryan Gosling and visit from producer husband Tom Ackerley

July 3, 2022 by metro.co.uk Leave a Comment

Margot Robbie was full of smiles as she remained busy at work on the live-action Barbie movie on Saturday, her 32nd birthday.

As she filmed scenes with her co-star Ryan Gosling , who plays Barbie’s boyfriend Ken , she was also joined on set by her husband Tom Ackerley, who serves as producer on the flick alongside Margot through their LuckyChap Entertainment company.

Barbie has been a treasure trove of pictures recently as the movies cracks on with its shoot in Los Angeles, offering fans pictures of Margot and Ryan’s glorious matching cowboy-inspired outfits and first glimpses of co-stars Will Ferrell and America Ferrera in costume.

They’ve also roller-bladed together in retro fluorescents (obsessed) and we’ve seen Margot practising her Barbie crying – and even heard a clip of what she sounds like in character as the iconic Mattel doll.

Tom, also 32, was spotted on set in sunglasses over th e weekend, in a white T-shirt and stripey trousers, and carrying a rucksack.

During a break, Margot was reportedly seen chatting to her British husband, who she wed in 2016 in a private ceremony.

Ryan and Margot were also busy with more scenes though, with Drive star Ryan snapped once again in his incredible neon roller-blading get-up – truly bringing bumbags back single-handedly? – while his co-star donned a loose white shirt over her leotard and opted for comfy slippers in a break from the skating.

In their western gear, the two stars were seen striding together and smiling, while they also held hands and appeared to try out a synchronised shoulder swagger at one point.

Ryan, 41, was also spotted approaching Margot on a bus stop bench as they appeared to practise a scene together where he surprised her, judging by the script in Ryan’s hand and the animated expression on Margot’s face.

Director Greta Gerwig, who also penned the screenplay with help from her partner Noah Baumbach, was also photographed in pink trainers and a wide-brimmed hat as she sat with Margot in Barbie costume on the bench, either side of an older lady holding a newspaper, who Margot was in conversation with.

There have been many rumours over the exact plot line for the movie, although nothing has yet been officially revealed.

The synopsis for the film on IMDb reads: ‘A doll living in Barbieland is expelled for not being perfect enough and sets off on an adventure in the real world. A live-action feature film based on the popular line of Barbie toys.’

Many are also expecting a Meta aspect to the storyline with Will Ferrell reportedly appearing as the CEO of a toy company, which his recent appearance in a pink tie and business wear on set might back up.

Other actors in the star-studded cast include new Doctor Who Ncuti Gatwa, Saturday Night Live star Kate McKinnon, Marvel superhero Simu Liu and more, with whispers Simu could be playing another Ken doll and Ncuti’s Sex Education co-star Emma Mackey might be Barbie’s little sister Skipper, thanks to her resemblance to Margot.

Barbie is due to hit cinemas on July 21, 2023.

Netflix’s Money Heist: Korea storms to number one – but fans aren’t convinced

June 30, 2022 by www.mirror.co.uk Leave a Comment

Move over Squid Game, there’s a new Korean big-hitter that’s absolutely slaying everything in its path – and its name is Money Heist: Korea – Joint Economic Area.

The series dropped last Friday and took just three days to claim the top spot in Netflix ’s global non-English viewing chart.

Racking up a staggering 33.7 millions hours of viewing during that time, the series also rocketed to number one in South Korea, Indonesia, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand.

Money Heist: Korea joins other successful Korean series in claiming the top spot for Netflix, including ‘All Of Us Are Dead’, ‘Juvenile Justice’ and ‘Business Proposal’.

The show follows in the wake from trailblazing hit Squid Game, which paved the way for Korean content to reach previously unheard of levels of success across the globe.

Money Heist: Korea is a remake of major international hit La Casa de Papel (aka Money Heist), which involves a team of thieves breaking into a Spanish banknote printing facility, guided by an off-site mysterious colleague.

The new Korean version, which really pops and fizzes with an effortlessly distant cool, follows eight thieves staging a daring heist at a mint, thrillingly situated in the newly unified zone between North and South Korea.

“As a big fan of the original Spanish series, I felt intrigued to tell this vibrant story in a Korean context,” writer Ryu Yong-jae told Variety.

The show’s creators worked doggedly with Netflix to ensure the remake felt as authentic to Korea as possible. The highly visual storytelling is injected with many little nuances that make all the difference, such as traditional Korean face masks.

“We were very lucky when we received this pitch from Ryu and the producing team, which felt like the right framework for a remake that would be respectful to the original while bringing something new that fans in Korea and globally would appreciate,” said Keo Lee, director of content, Netflix Korea.

Money Heist: Korea has achieved a healthy 83 per cent score on Rotten Tomatoes among critics, but scores a bafflingly lower 49 per cent with audiences. This disparity can be a little confusing, but Rotten Tomatoes says this can happen when fewer than 60 per cent of users give a movie or TV show a star rating of 3.5 or higher.

The show also has a very poor 5.1 rating on IMDB, with one user saying: “After 15 minutes you find out it’s only a copy paste from the original show. Very disappointing”.

Indeed, with it being a remake of a highly successful show, Money Heist: Korea is perhaps forever destined to live in its shadow.

This view is shared by one Rotten Tomatoes viewer, Changsik J, who posted: “Being remade means that a great original already exists. No matter how good a remake is, it can only be compared to the original, and it is easy to get bad reviews. Those who have already seen the Spanish version know the story. So it might be less fun. The main plot is based on a Spanish original. But it’s good because the details are Korean.”

Vanity Fair said: “The end result is a series that’s perhaps best suited for either ‘Money Heist’ superfans or those entirely new to the franchise. Still, ‘Money Heist: Korea’ proves to be a compelling watch based on its updated geopolitical context”.

The series director Kim Hong-sun told the Korean Times newspaper this week: “We tried to take in the strong elements that the original work had and thought it would be interesting to add our own story to it. So, I think it’s natural that we are getting such varied reviews”.

Dinesh D’Souza Is at War With Fox News—Except Now He’s Sucking Up

July 4, 2022 by www.thedailybeast.com Leave a Comment

Dinesh D’Souza has been on the outs with Fox News for months. After publicly griping that the conservative cable giant wouldn’t publicize his election-denying propaganda film 2,000 Mules , which had been roundly discredited by fact-checkers and reporters alike, the far-right provocateur has all but disappeared from the Fox News universe.

Yet, even as D’Souza continues to fire shots at Fox News while the conservative media giant refuses to book him, the pardoned felon has used his massive social media platforms to promote and praise the channel.

It appears as though D’Souza wants to use Fox News as both a friend and foe—whichever suits him best at the moment.

On his Facebook, Twitter, and Truth Social pages—all of which boast millions of followers—D’Souza in recent weeks has shared several Fox-friendly articles from a little-known website called Conservative Brief . The posts in question feature pieces celebrating the network’s ratings dominance, alongside captions lauding Fox News.

“The Five continues to dominate!” D’Souza wrote in a June 21 post on Truth Social, sharing a Conservative Brief article about the late-afternoon Fox News show’s ratings. He shared similar posts on both Twitter and Facebook.

“Fox News is on a roll!” D’Souza added a day later in another post that was shared repeatedly across all three of his social media accounts. This time, the linked article gushed over the latest ratings win for Fox News star Tucker Carlson’s primetime program.

The sycophantic praise for Carlson’s ratings especially stands out given D’Souza’s overt criticism of the Fox News star , which eventually prompted his public beefing with the network. In early May, D’Souza began raging against Fox for supposedly suppressing his film, going as far as personally accusing Carlson and his top producers of “specifically” instructing a guest not to discuss 2,000 Mules on his show.

That guest, True the Vote’s Catherine Engelbrecht, provided the main “research” for D’Souza’s project and was its executive producer. While she didn’t directly mention the film in her May appearance on Carlson’s show, she did assert that her group found thousands of “mules” who “illegally” delivered votes to ballot drop boxes.

Her claims on the program, and additional ones made in the film, have been repeatedly debunked and shot down , with PolitiFact finding D’Souza’s assertion that “mules” delivered 400,000 “illegal” votes to be a “myth.” Even Trump’s former attorney general Bill Barr cackled at the mere mention of D’Souza’s film during a Jan. 6 committee deposition, saying he was “unimpressed with it.”

As D’Souza lobbed grenades at the conservative media kingmaker, which included sharing a series of text messages he characterized as “highly abusive,” his regular appearances on Fox News soon dried up .

Once a near-weekly presence on longtime friend Laura Ingraham’s weeknight show, he hasn’t appeared on Fox News or sister channel Fox Business since late April. In fact, his name hasn’t even been mentioned on the air during that time, according to a transcript search.

With D’Souza continuing his anti-Fox campaign —he recently praised pro-Trump gubernatorial candidate Kari Lake for bringing up 2,000 Mules in an unhinged Fox News interview, for instance—why is he sharing over-the-top pro-Fox articles from a no-name clickbait website? The answer seems to lie in the murky waters of the grifty right.

Judd Legum of Popular Information reported back in February that Conservative Brief, an “obscure far-right website with 3 employees,” had somehow emerged this year as “a dominant force on Facebook.” The site, which essentially just aggregates tweets, YouTube clips and other articles, has become more popular on the social media platform than established legacy news outlets like The New York Times or Washington Post .

Legum found that a network of conservative influencers, including D’Souza, shared the website’s pieces on their social media pages—many times with identical text. The Conservative Brief posts shared on these pages would include UTM codes, which is “a way for publishers to know precisely how much traffic comes from a particular source.” The use of such codes would seem to indicate that D’Souza has a direct relationship with the site itself.

“By appending the UTM code, D’Souza is enabling Conservative Brief to isolate the traffic D’Souza is sending to Conservative Brief,” Legum reported . “D’Souza has no access to the information, however. So absent a relationship with Conservative Brief, appending the UTM code is pointless. But the UTM code would allow Conservative Brief to track and potentially pay D’Souza for sending Conservative Brief traffic through Facebook.”

He continued: “The fact that all of these Facebook pages use UTM codes when posting Conservative Brief links strongly suggests that Conservative Brief is paying for traffic. That would explicitly violate Facebook rules which state that Facebook Pages ‘cannot accept anything of value to post content that does not feature themselves or that they were not involved in creating.’”

D’Souza did not respond to The Daily Beast’s request for comment. Although he remains persona non grata at Fox News, he does have the support of at least one of the network’s stars. Dan Bongino, a Fox News contributor who hosts a weekend show on the network, recently welcomed D’Souza on his daily podcast to discuss 2,000 Mules at length.

One thing, however, stood out in the two conservative commentators’ lengthy conversation: While Bongino hasn’t been shy in his willingness to criticize his employer, and D’Souza obviously is still outspoken about the network, neither of the chest-thumping pundits ever brought up Fox News.
