Google hit with antitrust complaint by Danish job search rival

June 27, 2022 by brandequity.economictimes.indiatimes.com Leave a Comment

Google was hit with an antitrust complaint on Monday after Danish online job-search rival Jobindex took its grievance to European Union regulators, alleging the Alphabet-owned business had unfairly favoured its own job search service.

The complaint could reinvigorate EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager’s scrutiny of the service, Google for Jobs. Vestager said three years ago she was looking into the issue, but has yet to take any action.

The European Commission said it would assess the complaint according to the standard procedures. Jobindex’s action comes four years after German media group Axel Springer’s jobs portal Stepstone filed a similar complaint against Google.

Google, which has been fined more than 8 billion euros ($8.4 billion) by Vestager in recent years for various anti-competitive practices, says it partners with job providers to direct people to websites with job listings relevant to them.

“Any jobs provider, big or small, is able to take part and companies are seeing increased traffic and job matches as a result of this feature,” a Google spokesperson said.

Launched in Europe in 2018, Google for Jobs triggered criticism from 23 online job-search websites in 2019. They said they had lost market share after the online search giant had allegedly used its market power to push its new service.

Google’s service links to postings aggregated from many employers, allowing candidates to filter, save and get alerts about openings, though they must go elsewhere to apply. Google places a large widget for the tool at the top of results for ordinary web searches.

Jobindex, one of the 23 critics three years ago, said Google had skewed what had been a highly competitive Danish market towards itself via anticompetitive means.

Founder and CEO Kaare Danielsen said Jobindex had built up the largest jobs database in Denmark by the time Google for Jobs entered the local market last year.

“Nevertheless, in the short time following the introduction of Google for Jobs in Denmark, Jobindex lost 20% of search traffic to Google’s inferior service,” Danielsen told Reuters.

“By putting its own inferior service at the top of results pages, Google in effect hides some of the most relevant job offerings from job seekers. Recruiters in turn may no longer reach all job seekers, unless they use Google’s job service,” he said.

“This does not just stifle competition amongst recruitment services but directly impairs labour markets, which are central to any economy,” Danielsen said, urging the Commission to order Google to stop the alleged anti-competitive practices, fine the company and impose periodic payments to ensure compliance.

Jobindex said it had seen examples of free-riding, with some of its own job ads copied without its permission and marketed through Google for Jobs on behalf of Jobindex’s business partners. It also cited privacy risks to job applicants and its clients.

June 25, 2022 by www.thehindu.com Leave a Comment

The police identified the arrested person as A. Vijaykumar, 37, of Sharma Nagar, Vyasarpadi. A BE degree-holder, Vijaykumar had been estranged from his wife. He allegedly took ₹14 lakh from a candidate with a promise to get a government job. When he did not keep his promise, the job seeker lodged a complaint with the police.

The police said Vijayakumar has cheated 31 persons in a similar manner.

Manchester United are in disarray and it’s the toughest job of Erik ten Hag’s life, says Paul Merson

June 27, 2022 by www.skysports.com Leave a Comment

Paul Merson says Erik ten Hag is starting the most challenging job he will ever face with Manchester United in “disarray”.

United reported for pre-season on Monday as new manager Ten Hag took his first training session with the club yet to make a summer signing.

The club’s failure to qualify for the Champions League and lack of incomings led to reports that Cristiano Ronaldo may want to leave, but United insist he is not for sale and expect him to remain at Old Trafford.

“If Ten Hag managed for the rest of his life, it’ll never be harder than what he’s taking on now,” Merson told Sky Sports News after participating in The Big Golf Race to raise awareness about prostate cancer.

Ten hag goals

As Erik ten Hag prepares for his first day of pre-season training at Manchester United, we take a look back at some of his best goals from his playing career.

“This is a massive job. It’s the biggest club in the world and he is taking over when they’re in disarray.

“He needs to bring in as many players as he can because this team is not going to get you in the top four. They need to bring certain players in – (Frenkie) De Jong at Barcelona, he’s a good footballer – and then you move on from there. They need at least three or four players just to make a challenge for fourth place.”

‘Arsenal in for a good season’

Paul Merson believes silverware could be a possibility if Arsenal can complete the signing of Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City.

With Porto midfielder Fabio Vieira secured and now a deal agreed for Gabriel Jesus , former Arsenal forward Merson reckons the Gunners can be challenging for silverware this season.

“Jesus is the big one. I’m a big fan, I like him,” said Merson. “Pep Guardiola played him in a lot of big matches – he trusts him. He’s a centre forward who wants to score goals.

“People say he misses chances but everybody misses chances. The name of the game is when you miss a chance, you’re not scared to get back into the box and miss another one, and he’s definitely one of those players.

“I like what Arsenal have done to get that over the line. I think they’re in for a good season. There’s a project going on and they’ll be fighting for fourth place with Man United and Tottenham. If they can get into the Champions League and have a good cup run – the Europa is winnable – with the squad they’re building they’ve got a chance of getting some silverware this season.

“I like what [Edu and Mikel Arteta] are doing. They’ve got to get in the top four sooner rather than later.”

‘This is football – not baseball or basketball!’

Another London club, however, appears to be heading in a different direction, in the opinion of Merson. Chelsea announced the departure of technical and performance advisor Petr Cech on Monday, who follows chairman Bruce Buck and transfer chief Marina Granovskaia out of the door this summer in the wake of the Todd Boehly-Clearlake takeover.

“I thought the people who came in would keep Petr Cech in his position and Marina Granovskaia, who has done a great job at the club,” said Merson.

“You keep them there, shadow them. It’s not easy, it’s not baseball and basketball where you’re doing trades. This is professional football and I’m quite shocked those two have left the way they have.”

Sadio Mane

Paul Merson believes Sadio Mane will be a ‘massive miss’ for Liverpool after his move to Bayern Munich.

Merson also believes Liverpool have let a key player leave after Sadio Mane departed to join Bayern Munich .

“He will be a massive miss,” said Merson. “I don’t worry for Liverpool because they have an unbelievable manager but Mane was a big-game player who scored big goals in matches. He wouldn’t get the third, fourth or fifth in a 5-0 win, he’d get the winning goal, the one that took the lead or the equaliser. Those are the goals I look for.

“(Darwin) Nunez has got to hit the ground running like (Luis) Diaz and that rarely happens in the Premier League.”

Government needs to set up high-security printing press to prevent paper leak: HP DGP Shimla

June 27, 2022 by indianexpress.com Leave a Comment

Himachal Pradesh police chief on Monday said that the country needs to set up a high-security government press to prevent leaking of question papers printed for recruitment of employees in the government departments.

Director-General of Police (DGP) Sanjay Kundu told media at the state Police headquarters here that he had recommended the central intelligence and security agencies about the need for setting up a high-security printing press on the lines of one that prints currency notes, for printing of recruitment papers.

On May 6, Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur had cancelled the written test conducted to recruit police constables amid reports of a paper leak. A test for recruiting 1,334 constables in the State police force had been conducted on March 27 this year, with 75,000 candidates appearing in it after clearing physical tests.

Kundu said that the state Police has so far arrested 171 people from 10 states, including West Bengal, Bihar, Haryana, Delhi, and Rajasthan for their involvement in the leaking of Himachal Pradesh Police constable recruitment exam papers.During investigation, the state Police has come to know that the interstate gangs involved in the paper leak were also responsible for leaking of papers for various other recruitment exams held in other states, including Rajasthan and Jammu & Kashmir, he said.

Kundu said that those arrested so far include, 25 people who are associated with various interstate gangs from other states, and one Rajeev Yadav, a section engineer in the Railways. The 171 arrested also include 116 candidates, fathers of nine of them, and 21 agents from Himachal Pradesh, he said.

Regarding their modus operandi, the DGP said that some employees of printing presses were the members of the paper-leak gangs.Soon after getting the papers, these employees would contact their associates in other states, who would buy the names and other details of the candidates from coaching centres, he said.

They would then contact the candidates to sell them papers using their network spread across states, he said. The DGP was accompanied by Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Police Madhu Sudan, who is heading the five-member Special Investigation Team (SIT) set up to investigate the case, as he addressed the media.

DIG Madhu Sudan said that efforts were on to nab about 10 other people identified as accused in the case. The number may go up as the investigation progresses, he said. Asked about complicity of police in the leaks, Sudan said though there has so far been found no such instance, the possibility cannot be ruled out as the investigation is still on.

The CM had on May 17 decided to hand over the case to CBI, but the probe agency is yet to take over the investigation. After the incident in May, three FIRs were registered under sections 420 (cheating) and 120-B (criminal conspiracy) of the Indian Penal Code at Kangra district’s Gaggal Police Station, at State CID Police Station at Bharari in Shimla, and at Arki Police Station in Solan.
