“Security incident” at JFK airport latest blow to Fourth of July travelers

July 3, 2022 by www.newsweek.com Leave a Comment

A “security incident” at John F. Kennedy (JFK) International Airport in New York City on Sunday led to suspended service at one of its terminals, and left airport officials warning travelers to expect delays.

“Due to a security incident, arrivals and departure levels at Terminal 4 remain closed to inbound traffic. Please expect traffic delays and allow additional travel time,” the airport wrote on Twitter just before noon.

In a tweet about 30 minutes later, however, the airport said that the security incident had been “cleared.”

“Arrivals and departure level roadways at Terminal 4 have reopened. Please expect residual traffic delays and allow additional travel time,” the airport wrote.

Gothamist reported that the incident at JFK involved an unattended bag. A spokesperson for the Port Authority, which manages the airport, told the publication that a bomb squad determined that there was no explosive device inside.

Newsweek has reached out to the Port Authority for comment and additional details about the incident.

The incident and delays on Sunday come as airlines and travelers are seeing travel issues all over the country during the busy Fourth of July holiday weekend.

On Friday, more than 4,500 U.S. domestic and international flights had been delayed , according to data from FlightAware.

Meanwhile on Saturday, a computer glitch in American Airlines ‘ system had allowed pilots to drop flights for the month of July, which left 12,000 flights without pilots. The flights included those scheduled for Sunday.

“We have become aware of a technical issue with our Trip Trade with Open Time System (TTOT),” American Airlines told ABC News at the time. “We understand these are important tools for our pilots and are working as quickly as possible. We will provide updates throughout the day as we learn more.”

In a second statement later on, American Airlines assured that the issue had been resolved, and that most of the affected flights had been restored. The company anticipated that there would not be “any operational impact because of this issue.” Despite assurances, the company did not specify how it had gone about restoring the flights.

U.S. flight cancellations between the beginning of the year and through the end of June have already exceeded the total number of flight cancellations that the country saw in 2021. The causes of the rash of recent cancellations include not enough staff members, such as pilots, and bad weather events. They also include airlines scheduling too many flights.

“Airlines have been over-zealous in their scheduling,” Henry Harteveldt, a travel industry analyst and adviser with Atmosphere Research Group, told Newsweek recently.

Harteveldt added that many pilots have taken retirement in recent years, and that not enough have been trained to replace them. “Airlines are doing all they can [to get new pilots], but it’s not a problem they can solve easily,” he said.

Fourth of July travel chaos with 900 flights canceled and 8,000 delayed as airports see most passengers in two years

July 4, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

THOUSANDS of flight cancellations and delays have caused frustrating chaos for millions of Americans hoping to travel over the holiday weekend.

As of Sunday evening, over 933 flights have been canceled and at least 8,498 flights have been delayed due to bad weather as well as staffing shortages, per FlightAware .

The July 4th weekend chaos has been worsened by Tropical Storm Bonnie and Tropical Storm Colin.

Tropical Storm Colin put storm warnings in effect for much of the coastal Carolinas this weekend and is said to affect Fourth of July gatherings with heavy rainfall.

Colin originated near Florida’s east coast on Saturday then traveled towards Georgia before moving inland over South Carolina.

Tropical Storm Bonnie worsens Southern weather as Reuters predicts that the storm will intensify into a hurricane off the coast of Mexico.

Over the past week, thousands of flights were canceled with American and Delta nixing the most plane trips as Delta pilots protest work conditions, according to NBC News .

The canceled flights come as an email warning from Delta advised of “operational issues” and urged flyers to rebook their trips with “no fare difference or change fees.”

However, Delta pilots and flight attendants were photographed on Thursday taking part in an informational picket at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport in Georgia.

A Delta Airlines pilot, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke with WSB-TV about why so many flights are getting canceled.

He told the news outlet: “Obviously there is an airline pilot shortage across the board for most domestic airlines.”

“They’re being caused by staffing issues. They go far beyond pilots just getting sick,” the pilot said.

“We’re not the only ones canceling these flights, but what we do feel, and I as a pilot and a lot of my colleagues feel, is that Delta has kind of backed themselves into this position.”

In a statement to WSB, Delta said: “Delta teams continue to safely manage through compounding factors affecting our operation, including higher-than-planned unscheduled absences in some of our work groups.

“Canceling a flight is always our last resort, and we sincerely apologize to our customers.”

PRE-PANDEMIC NUMBERS

The traffic comes as Transportation Security Administration Spokesperson Lisa Farbstein reported that TSA officers screened 2,490,490 people at airport security checkpoints nationwide on Friday, July 1.

The number is the highest since February 11, 2020, when 2,507,588 people were screened.

“We are back to pre-pandemic checkpoint volume,” Farbstein wrote.

The GMB union, which represents some travel workers, said passengers should try not to take bags to escape queues. Meanwhile, Grant Shapps has reportedly told the aviation industry that visa rules can’t be relaxed to recruit more foreign workers.

Andy Prendergast, national secretary of the GMB union, told Sky News: “If people can check in online and do not take bags, that limits the disruption.

“It’s not a magic bullet, but it’s one less thing to worry about and it does reduce the chance of there being problems.”

Travel expert and CEO of the PC Agency, Paul Charles, said that passengers should consider “packing light”.

However, John Irving, the chief executive of Liverpool airport, told BBC Radio 4: “People need to make their own decisions.”

Passengers with a lot of hand luggage could also mean that security queues fall under more pressure.

Heathrow and Gatwick airports have said they have no plans to change current luggage advice for passengers.

The aviation industry continues to struggle with extreme staff shortages following the pandemic.

Aviation leaders reportedly asked the Government to relax the rules on special immigration visas to ease the pressure.

According to the BBC, the Government rejected the bid to allow EU workers into the UK to help with the peak summer travel period.

Steve Heapy, CEO of Jet2, told the BBC: “Brexit has taken hundreds of thousands, if not millions of people out of the employment market and that is undoubtedly having an impact.”

More than 30,000 members of airline staff were let go during the pandemic and some have since found work in other industries.

Issues could continue into the summer if the industry is unable to recruit the necessary amount of workers before July.

Transport secretary, Grant Shapps, said: “We’re grateful to those airlines and operators who have continued to deliver good services despite the current pressures and we recognise that not all operators have been affected in the same way.

“I also understand the resourcing strains on the aviation sector but it does not excuse poor planning and overbooking flights that they cannot service.

“The companies who have seen the most disruption need to learn from those who ran services smoothly.

“We will continue to monitor the situation closely to make sure consumers don’t lose out from any further disruption.”

Travel chaos as passengers get stuck in long queues at Stansted airport & sleep on FLOOR ahead of MORE cancellations

July 3, 2022 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

PASSENGERS have been stuck in long queues at Stansted airport and sleep on the floor ahead of further cancellations.

Weary passengers were hit by more chaos as a mix of staff shortages and strikes continue to make air travel difficult.

There were also big queues to get out of the station in Essex as travellers arrived at the airport by train.

It comes as airlines have until Friday to take advantage of a government “amnesty” to the rules on airport slots, allowing airlines to change schedules without facing a potential penalty.

Government ministers told airlines to review their flights after the May half term chaos, which was blamed on a shortage of airline and airport staff.

And Work and Pensions Secretary Therese Coffey today told Sky News: “Airports and airlines released a lot of people after the furlough scheme had come to an end.

“Perhaps they did not anticipate the desire for people to get out of the country.

“It matters that airlines have confidence flights can be delivered and passengers know well in advance if their flights is cancelled. ”

BA’s flights from Heathrow Airport are likely to bear the brunt of cancellations this week.

Staff shortages have already been leading to queues at security and check in desks at airports across the UK as the travel industry picks up after Covid pandemic lockdowns.

The situation is set to get worse during the summer after more than 700 British Airways staff at London Heathrow voting to strike.

Easyjet workers in Spain went on strike last week and have two more planned for later in the month.

The 72-hour strikes will involve hundreds of crew at their airline’s bases in Barcelona, Malaga and Palma.

There are triple the number of passengers flying in and out of Britian’s airports this summer compared to last year.

Hundreds of flights are being delayed or cancelled as there are not enough staff to cope with the booming demand.

Passengers are also reporting having to wait hours to get their luggage back after flights and bags and suitcases are being left abandoned on carousels.

The GMB and Unite Unions are expected to set strike dates for the BA Heathrow staff for around July 22, just as most children start their school holidays.

The BA dispute is over a 10 per cent pay cut that check-in and ground-handling staff took during the Covid pandemic.

The Unions want the full pay reinstated.

And yesterday Heathrow stopped departures as passengers were forced to wait hours for baggage .

Thousands of passengers at Britain’s busiest airport were plunged into chaos as staff battled with a fuelling system failure.

The Jet A-1 system malfunctioned shortly before 2pm and departures resumed around an hour later.

It meant huge numbers of holidaymakers were left stranded at their gates, while others were forced to wait it out on board.
