Steve McManaman believes Liverpool could make a shock move for Manchester City star Kalvin Phillips should Fabinho leave Anfield.

Fabinho looks set to depart Liverpool after five highly successful years after agreeing personal terms with Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad.

While a fee is yet to be agreed, the defensive midfielder was left out of the Reds’ pre-season tour of Germany suggesting the transfer is imminent.

Losing the Brazil international will create a glaring hole in Jurgen Klopp ’s midfield, especially with Jordan Henderson also heavily-linked with a move to the Middle-East.

Various replacements have been touted for a move to Anfield therefore, most notably Southampton’s Romeo Lavia, who, while admired, lacks experience and could prove to be too pricey.

Another name who is reportedly on Klopp’s shortlist is Phillips, who only moved to rivals City last summer, costing Pep Guardiola £45million.

The former Leeds star endured a tough first season at the Etihad despite winning the treble, with injuries limiting him to just four starts across all competitions while Rodri remains firmly ahead of the 27-year-old in the pecking order.

Nevertheless, Phillips remains very highly-rated and McManaman, speaking to Betfred , thinks he’d be a good fit under Klopp, but only if the player was interested in a change of scenery.

‘If Liverpool lose Fabinho, then I believe that Kalvin’s name would come into the mix. He’s English, he’s an England international, he plays in that role and I don’t believe that Manchester City would expect a club to break the bank for him.

‘There may be a deal there to pursue and if Jurgen Klopp is to lose a defensive midfielder this summer, then a move for Kalvin could certainly be an option, but it all depends on whether Manchester City would be willing to let him go to a Premier League rival.

‘Manchester City have brought in Mateo Kovacic after losing Ilkay Gundogan, so they still have a similar nucleus of players that were there last season, so it’s still up in the air, but a move for Kalvin could easily happen as he fits the profile of what Liverpool would need if Fabinho leaves.

‘He likes to work hard, he wants to prove a point, but it all depends on whether Pep Guardiola would be willing to let him join a rival and whether Kalvin would want to leave Manchester City after they’ve just won the treble.’

Phillips has recently opened up on his struggles since moving to City and has a contract with the champions until 2028.

Roy Keane has grown a reputation for his no-nonsense, short-tempered attitude in the football world, which made him one of the most feared players of his generation. But even the icon didn’t resort to extreme treatment of during his short managerial career.

Ten Hag has banished Sancho from his United first team after the 23-year-old publicly challenged his authority at the start of September.

Sancho reacted poorly to his exclusion from the Red Devils’ 3-1 defeat at Arsenal, effectively calling his manager a liar over the reasoning he offered after full-time.

The No 25 hasn’t featured in five consecutive matchday squads while Ten Hag awaits an apology, outcasting him until he receives one.

And Keane has claimed he never resorted to barring one of his players while he helmed Sunderland and Ipswich Town from 2006 to 2011.

“I’ve never banished a player to play for the reserves as a manager, but obviously, every story is different,” Keane told the Stick to Football podcast , presented by Sky Bet.

“Because it’s Manchester United, maybe everyone is looking for them to make a mistake. I’ve never had the experience of banishing a player, and he doesn’t play for the first team.”

And Gary Neville admitted that he didn’t know how to feel about the ordeal and Ten Hag’s public criticism, given Sancho took a lengthy break last season partly due to his mental health.

Neville added: “The big story has been about Jadon Sancho, and I’m torn – I think it’s really important to have discipline and control if you’re a manager in the dressing room.

“Also, what is niggling me a little bit is that only six months ago, he was allowed to have two or three months off with mental health issues.

“And now he’s had this very public spat where the manager has come out and said he’s not training well. Sancho has come back, and now Erik ten Hag is demanding an apology, and Sancho is not forgiving.”

Jamie Carragher weighed in on the debate, siding with Ten Hag for his treatment and blasting Sancho’s United career after arriving in a £73million deal.

“Because Erik ten Tag is going through a really difficult spell – Man United haven’t started the season well – we say ‘he’s losing the dressing room’,” Carragher explained.

“But if he was winning, we’d be saying, ‘he’s ruthless, he’s dealt with the situation and sent a message to the dressing room’. I’m always with the manager on this.

“It’s not even heavy criticism – has he been training right? He’s been awful – he’s been really poor considering how much he cost Manchester United and his reputation.”

The Spaniard signed a new deal with Leverkusen earlier this year after he was linked with a move to , though the lure of returning to the Santiago Bernabeu could prove persuasive having spent five years with Madrid as a player. Alvaro Arbeloa and Raul have also been linked with the future vacancy, though they are unlikely to truly be in the frame given their lack of proven credentials.

Asked about the trio earlier this week, Ancelotti said: “Look, I’ve had Alonso, as a player. His knowledge of football is top-level. He’s doing great with Bayer Leverkusen because he does these readings. This ability, I wish him as well as Arbeloa and Raul, I really wish [for] them to coach at Real Madrid one day.”

Arsenal travelled to Brentford and Reiss Nelson got them off to the perfect start as he fired the Gunners ahead on eight minutes.

It was eventually enough for Mikel Arteta’s side to seal a 1-0 victory as Aaron Ramsdale , who recently lost the No.1 spot to David Raya , recorded a clean sheet and Emile Smith Rowe picked up valuable minutes after being handed a start.

Chelsea locked horns with Brighton at Stamford Bridge and the Seagulls had two massive chances in the first half after errors from both Robert Sanchez and Moises Caicedo, but Joao Pedro and Ansu Fati could not find the back of the net.

But Jurgen Klopp’s men produced a second-half comeback as Cody Gakpo levelled it up after an assist from summer signing Ryan Gravenberch before an absolute rocket from Dominik Szoboslai. Diogo Jota also got on the scoresheet late-on, finishing past Jakub Stolarczyk with a backheel as it finished 3-1.

In the other third-round games, Premier League sides West Ham, Fulham and AFC Bournemouth progressed with victories over Lincoln City, Norwich City and Stoke City respectively.

League One side Lincoln thought they had took the lead against the Hammers in the first-half but the goal was ruled out for offside before Tomas Soucek’s goal sealed a 1-0 win for the east Londoners.

Meanwhile, Everton eliminated Aston Villa with a 2-1 victory in an all-Premier League battle to seal their spot in the fourth round and Blackburn Rovers knocked out Cardiff City with a 5-2 win.

But the biggest shock of the night game at St James’ Park as Pep Guardiola’s side suffered an early third-round exit to Newcastle.

Last season’s treble winners had won every single game in all competitions since losing the Community Shield on penalties to Arsenal heading into the clash against Eddie Howe’s side, but Alexander Isak’s goal saw City suffer a rare defeat.
