The Islamic State and other extremist groups exploited the chaos that engulfed Libya after the 2011 uprising that toppled and later killed longtime ruler Muammar Gaddafi. They seized the coastal city of Sirte, Gaddafi’s birthplace, and other cities including Derna in eastern Libya.

The militants were eventually expelled from Sirte in December 2016 by forces fighting for the former U.N.-backed Government of National Accord . Forces of east-based commander Khalifa Hifter reclaimed Derna two years later.

Two people have been sentenced to 40 years in prison for the 2017 killing and dismemberment of their former roommate in Maryland .

Christina Harnish, also known as Christina Stallings, and William Rice were sentenced Friday to the maximum punishment for second-degree murder in the killing of Megan Tilman.

Body parts of Tilman, an Annapolis mother of two, washed up along the Shady Side shoreline weeks after she was killed .

In the fall of 2017, Rice and Harnish were roommates of Tilman and her elderly mother and had relied on their financial support. When Tilman stopped providing that support, she disappeared, prosecutors said.

Christina Harnish and Timothy Rice, formerly of Annapolis, Maryland, have been sentenced to 40 years each in prison for the murder and dismemberment of their roommate, Megan Tilman. Tilman, an intellectually disabled mother of two, reportedly withdrew the financial support she gave her assailants shortly before being killed.

Tilman’s family reported that they stopped hearing from her. Her ex-husband reported receiving suspicious text messages and seeing social media posts on her account that were different from her normal communications.

By that time, Rice and Harnish had fled to Arizona by bus, State’s Attorney Anne Colt Leitess said in a news release.

The Baltimore Sun reported that public defender Anne Stewart-Hill said Harnish entered a three-way romance with Rice and Tilman after leaving an abusive relationship. She moved in with the couple and Tilman’s ailing mother.

Police and prosecutors said Harnish and Rice manipulated Tilman, who was intellectually disabled, out of her mother’s money.

Assistant State’s Attorney Glen Neubauer said it was Tilman’s money that paid for Harnish and Rice’s bus tickets to Arizona , where they lived in a homeless encampment for nearly four years. They were extradited to Maryland in February 2022 after being arrested by local officials in Pima County, Arizona.

Attorneys for both defendants said the fatal fight with Tilman was fueled by alcohol and crack cocaine.

People are just realizing Wi-Fi speeds are killed by four common household items – move them now for instant upgrade

May 29, 2023 by www.thesun.co.uk Leave a Comment

SLOW Wi-Fi at home can be very frustrating, but there is often an easy fix.

Plenty of household items are responsible for killing Wi-Fi router speeds, and moving them can feel like an instant free upgrade.

We’ve listed four common culprits below.

VACUUM CLEANERS

Using your vacuum near your Wi-Fi router might disrupt your speed.

Some interference is possible due to the electric motor in vacuums and the radiation they can emit.

BLUETOOTH SPEAKERS

If you have Bluetooth speakers or a sound system near your router, consider rearranging your gadgets.

Wi-Fi and Bluetooth use similar radio frequencies, so this can result in disruption to either of them.

A quick test to reveal whether Bluetooth is indeed a problem is to turn it off temporarily and see if things improve.

MICROWAVES

Your microwave gives off a lot of electromagnetic radiation that can interfere with your Wi-Fi router’s signals.

Even if you’re not using the microwave, the metal it contains can also affect Wi-Fi.

If you have your router near any metal objects, it’s worth moving the router or the items further away.

Your router emits radio waves and these are electromagnetic.

That means metal can absorb them and reduce the strength of your Wi-Fi.

MIRRORS

Even mirrors are culprits when it comes to radio wave absorption.

Some especially large wall mirrors can impact connectivity as a mirror is made up of a thin coat of metal, which may cause interference to the hub.

GOOD PLACES TO PUT YOUR WI-FI ROUTER

You should put your Wi-Fi router as central in your home as possible.

Generally, you should keep it in an open area that’s raised off the ground.

Always make sure your router is plugged into the master socket rather than an extension cable so it works faster.

Four people have died after a boat carrying more than 20 passengers, including tourists, sank in strong winds on Lake Maggiore in northern Italy.

The boat overturned on Sunday evening between the towns of Sesto Calende and Arona, Italian media say.

Five people were rescued and taken to hospital.

Unconfirmed reports in Italian media say the victims are Italian, Israeli and Russian.

One of the them, a Russian woman, is said to have been the partner of the boat’s skipper.

Attilio Fontana, president of the Lombardy region, said the “very serious incident” was due to bad weather.

The boat was 16m (52ft) long and had been hired by tourists, he said on Facebook.

According to Italian news outlets, the boat had been carrying about 25 people who were celebrating a birthday when a storm developed over the lake, later turning into a “small hurricane”. The boat capsized and sank soon afterwards.

Everyone onboard went into the water, but many of the passengers swam ashore or were rescued by other boats.

Rescue divers and a helicopter scrambled to help with the search at the lake’s southern end, and several ambulances and an air ambulance attended the scene.

A video shared by firefighters showed chairs and other debris floating in choppy waters.

Lake Maggiore – on the south side of the Alps – is shared by Italy and Switzerland and is a popular destination for tourists.

The area has seen poor weather over the last day, with Italy’s meteorological service issuing thunderstorm warnings.
