DETROIT (AP) — A Detroit woman has been charged in the death of her 3-year-old son after police found the boy’s decomposing body in a basement freezer.

Azuradee France, 31, is charged with first-degree murder, child abuse and torture and concealing the death of an individual, Wayne County Prosecutor Kym Worthy said Sunday. She had an arraignment Sunday and was remanded to jail, the Detroit News reported.

“The alleged facts in this case have astounded even the seriously jaded,” Worthy said. “Our children continue to be at risk — not just from gun violence but also from the alleged murderer that lives in the house with them.”

Detroit police officers and members of Child Protective Services were conducting a welfare check at the home early Friday when they discovered the boy’s body, Police Chief James White said. It was not immediately clear how or when the boy died or how long his body had been in the freezer.

Five other children lived at the home, White said. They were placed in the custody of Child Protective Services.

The woman is scheduled for a July 8 probable cause conference.

A family has been left devastated after three siblings tragically drowned in a lake on the same day.

Raven Powell, 22, was found dead only hours after younger brothers Mason Powell, 4, and Sawyer Powell, 3 were taken lifeless from Clarks Hill Lake, Georgia on Thursday (June 30).

The two boys were pulled from the water by bystanders, while police had to use sonar technology to locate Raven.

A final video taken at the side of the lake reportedly showed them playing while wearing life jackets.

Investigators say they have not “have not ruled out foul play” as a cause in the three deaths.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) special agent Pat Morgan said to WRDW: “We have not ruled out anything at this point as the autopsy will hopefully provide us with more information as well as the interviews and other investigative leads we are following.”

A heartbroken cousin told the local television station of her grief following the family’s loss, saying: “There are no words to describe it other than horrible. It’s crazy how it happened within a blink of an eye”

“They were our world. They mean everything to us.”

Paying tribute she said Mason and Sawyer were “so happy” to go to the lake with their sister, and said she never saw the brothers “without a smile on their face unless they were hungry”.

Back in the UK, a teenage boy has tragically lost his life last week after efforts to resuscitate him failed when he was rescued from a river.

The 13-year-old, who has not been named, had been reported missing at 4:45pm on Tuesday (June 22) prompting a major search and rescue operation.

The boy was found by emergency services at the River Taff in Whitchurch, Cardiff, an hour later. Police said a group of children had been reported playing in the water that afternoon, according to police.

A 54-year-old man has been handed the longest sentence imposed here for sexual offences, after sexually abusing multiple children.

The man offered to tutor the victims, some of whom have learning and physical disabilities, and lied to their parents that he was a qualified educational therapist, The Straits Times reported.

He sexually abused eight children.

Two of the female victims were only five years old when he raped them. Another female victim was eight years old.

The man also recorded videos of the abuse, which lasted for up to 17 minutes.

Caught in 2018

According to ST , the man was caught when he sold his laptop in 2018, and a buyer found obscene images on it. The buyer then called the police.

In court, the man pleaded guilty to six charges of aggravated rape committed against three of the victims from 2002 to 2018.

He was sentenced to 45 years’ jail. If he is given the typical one-third remission for good behaviour, the man will be 80 when he is released from prison.

The man cannot be identified due to a gag order, as he was in a relationship with one of the victim’s mothers.

ST reported the man saying in court in Mandarin that he is “very remorseful” for the wrong he has done, and that his actions will “haunt [him] for [his] entire life”.

He also apologised to the people he has hurt and asked for forgiveness.

According to ST, High Court judge Ang Cheng Hock said: “The exceptionally sickening sexual abuse perpetrated by the accused against multiple children of such a young age warrants a harsh sentence.”

Justice Ang added that the lengthy sentence is a strong message to other offenders, and to reflect society’s condemnation of the man’s depraved acts against children, who trusted him as a tutor and father figure.

An 11-year-old boy watched as paramedics fought to save the life of a woman who had been stabbed, not knowing it was his mother.

Laisa Maraia Waka, aged in her 50s, was walking along the footpath on Cheyenne St in Sockburn, Christchurch, when she was attacked by a stranger wielding a knife about 4.20pm on Saturday.

She was metres from her home, where her son was waiting excitedly for her to return from working at a rest home in Ilam.

The boy did not witness the attack but saw the aftermath, not knowing the person fatally injured was his mother.

A 37-year-old man, whose name is suppressed, has been charged with Waka’s murder.

He had been in the care of mental health services prior to Saturday’s incident. It is unclear what conditions he was subject to.

Health officials have refused to comment about the case while it is subject to a police investigation.

At a court hearing on Monday the alleged killer was remanded in custody until his next appearance on July 15.

Judge Mark Callaghan asked for a report under Section 38 of the Criminal Procedure (Mentally Impaired Persons) Act 2003 to assess the man’s fitness to stand trial.

Waka moved to New Zealand from Fiji in 2018 for a better life and was a greatly respected member of the Moraia Fijian Parish, where she sang in the choir.

She has four children, three of whom still live in Fiji.

Fijian community leader and parish member Una Tikoi said people were angry the alleged killer was out in the community, given he was a “sick man”.

She said Waka’s son was “traumatised” by her death and “haunted” by what he’d witnessed.

“He can be talking and laughing, and then he starts crying,” Tikoi said.

Waka’s son and her husband, Nemani Tunidau, were being supported by members of the Fijian community at the parish on Monday.

“We are very distressed,” Tikoi said.

She described Waka as a “loving, caring mother”, saying: “She’s a very joyful person with a huge smile.”

Waka’s body would be taken home to Fiji so “her three children there can pay their last respects”.

Tunidau said on Monday afternoon he was “lost for words” about what had happened.

“I’m still in shock … I’m just devastated.

Tunidau, a carpenter, moved to New Zealand in 2016. He and his wife had applied for residency.

On Monday morning, Waka’s adult daughter posted an emotional tribute online.

The pair hadn’t seen each other for four years, about the time Waka moved to New Zealand. They last spoke on Mother’s Day.

The woman said Waka had been her “role model since day one”. She’d always encouraged her to work hard and be independent and respectful.

“I thank God for giving us a mum that [was] so loving and caring. I’m so grateful to be your daughter. There won’t be a day that goes by that I won’t think of you.

“I can’t begin to express how much I will miss you. There is a huge hole in my heart and I don’t know how I’m going to cope. Your legacy is one that will inspire us all, and we will remember your warmth and love forever.”

Waka also has an adult son who works as a police officer in Fiji.

On Sunday, Canterbury district commander Superintendent John Price described the attack as “horrific, traumatic and random”.

The “senseless act” would have an “incredible impact” on the community, he said.

Waka had caught a bus home after work. She had walked alone about 300 metres from her bus stop when she was stabbed.

Residents and paramedics tried to save her life, but she died at the scene.

Her alleged attacker was arrested a short time later, about 500m away, on Epsom Rd, after a brief search involving police dogs. He was with his brother, who had arrived after the attack and had no part to play in the crime.

A Canterbury District Health Board spokesperson and Health Minister Andrew Little declined to comment on Sunday while the matter was investigated by police.

Police were still piecing together what had happened, and didn’t provide a motive for the attack, Price said on Sunday. However, he confirmed the suspected murder weapon had been recovered.
