Roku Channel Adds Eight NBCUniversal Local Stations In A First For The Streaming Platform

June 28, 2022 by deadline.com Leave a Comment

Roku has teamed with NBCUniversal to offer eight local NBC stations as free offerings on its popular Roku Channel .

It is the first time local stations will be on the Roku Channel, which the company says has reach to households with 80 million people.

The local channels from New York, LA, Chicago, Philadelphia, Dallas/Fort Worth, Washington DC, Hartford, CT and South Florida will be available through the Roku Channel’s on-screen guide.

“Audiences are increasingly opting to consume news through streaming , and local news has consistently been one of the top requested categories by our users,” Ashley Hovey, head of The Roku Channel, AVOD, said in a press release. “ We’re excited to work with NBCUniversal Local and the NBC Stations to expand our relevant live TV offering for streamers and to bring news from multiple major cities to millions of viewers across the country to easily access and enjoy.”

The local TV sector has found its way to streaming after a series of fits and starts, some having to do with technology, some with industry models and delicate questions about affiliates and advertising. Free, ad-supported streaming outlets like Tubi and Amazon Fire TV have featured local stations, and streaming startup HaystackTV, has put local news at the center of its service.

“Local news has never been more vital to helping our audiences stay informed about what’s happening in their communities,” said Meredith McGinn, EVP of diginets and original production, NBCUniversal Local. “We look forward to bringing our NBC local news channels and our stations’ best-in-class journalism to the millions of people the Roku Channel reaches and to launching more of our NBC local news channels to expand streamers’ access to our local news content.”

The Roku Channel is a leader in free, ad-supported linear TV, or FAST. The Roku Channel was the No. 1 FAST service by active account reach on the Roku platform in the U.S. in the first quarter. The Roku Channel has more than 300 linear channels as well as 80,000 movie and TV titles.

Police identify local commander of terror network in Jammu’s Pir Panjal valley

June 28, 2022 by www.thehindu.com Leave a Comment

The arrest of two persons by the Jammu and Kashmir police has brought to the fore a network of militants behind growing incidents of militancy in the Pir Panjal valley in the Jammu division this year. Meanwhile, the police said the Army on Tuesday claimed to have shot dead two persons, suspected of facilitating arms supply to militants, near the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir’s Kupwara district.

The police, investigating three blasts that took place in Rajouri’s Kotranka town and Shahpur in March and April this year, on Tuesday said they have arrested Muhammad Shabir and Muhammad Sadiq, both from Draaj locality of Rajouri’s Budhal area, for their involvement in these blasts. Earlier, the police had described these blasts as “mysterious”.

“During the investigation, it has come to the fore that the three accused, Talib Shah, Shabir and Sadiq, were involved in these blasts. They were working on the directions of their Pakistan-based handlers and received weapons, ammunition, and explosives. Later, they used these improvised explosive devices to trigger blasts,” a police spokesman said.

Four persons, including two non-local labourers, were injured in these three blasts in Rajouri.

The police said the group was headed by Shah, “who has collected three consignments of arms, ammunition, explosives from Lamberi-Kalakote area in the months of January, March and April this year”.

“Shah, who is the commander of the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), is still absconding. He is the mastermind of all terrorist activities in the Pir Panjal valley. He motivated many youths to carry out terror activities in Rajouri,” the police said.

According to the police investigation, Shah has been “instrumental in almost all the terror incidents in the Pir Panjal valley, comprising the districts of Rajouri and Poonch, in the last three years.

“This group was also sheltering a few Kashmir-based active terrorists of the LeT in general area Kandi-Budhal and were making efforts to revive militancy in the Pir Panjal valley,” the police said,

The police have recovered five IEDs, five remote controls, and fuses from the arrested persons.

The Jammu division had zero instances of militant attacks except for infiltrations prior to August 5, 2019, when the Centre ended Jammu and Kashmir’s special constitutional position.

The Jammu division was rocked by several blasts this year, including the Udhampur market blast that left one person dead and 13 others injured in March and the Katra blast on a bus carrying pilgrimage in May, in which four pilgrims died. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) had found traces of explosives at the Katra blast site.

Official sources said the incident could be the first major attack carried out by militants using a sticky or magnetic bomb in Jammu and Kashmir. A spokesman, Nadeem Chaudhary, of the Jammu-Kashmir Freedom Fighters claimed responsibility for the Katra attack. The outfit warned of more attacks against the “Hindutva agenda” in Jammu.

Meanwhile, the police said the arrest of Shah was “very crucial in solving many militancy cases”.  “The two arrested persons were planning more such incidents to target security forces,” the police added.

In north Kashmir, the police said two persons, who had allegedly come to receive a cache of arms and narcotics to facilitate infiltration of terrorists, were shot dead in Kupwara’s Keran Sector.

The police spokesman said that suspicious movement was observed close to the fence at the India Gate–Bichu pocket in the Keran sector at 12:15 a.m.

“On being challenged, fire was drawn on the patrol party of the Army from the fence side, which was retaliated. On search, two individuals were found dead near the fence and were in possession of four AK rifles, eight magazines and two packets of narcotics. Two more AK rifles along with magazines and four grenades were found on the other side of the fence,” the police said.

The police identified the slain as Majid Chechi and Samsudin Beigh. “They had come to receive the cache of arms and narcotics and to facilitate infiltration of terrorists in the general area of Rauta Nar at the fence,” the Army said.

The police said an investigation has been initiated in the incident.

Protest Against Agnipath Boomerangs for Congress as Bihar Locals Hurl ‘Deshdrohi’ Jibe at Kanhaiya Kumar

June 28, 2022 by www.news18.com Leave a Comment

A group of men raised slogans against Kanhaiya Kumar in Patna while the Congress leader was there to participate in protest against Agnipath scheme.

Locals in Patna Sahib raised slogans against Kanhaiya calling “Kanhaiya Kumar deshdrohi hai,” (Kanhaiya Kumar is an anti-national).

When Kanhaiya Kumar began addressing party workers, then a group of men began shouting slogans supporting the Agnipath scheme.

Videos from the protest site shows scuffle between the workers of the Bihar Congress and the youth who were sloganeering against Kanhaiya Kumar.

However, they immediately left after being asked by Congress workers, state Congress spokesperson Asit Nath Tiwary said.

Addressing the rally, Kumar demanded an immediate rollback of the recruitment scheme. “The Agnipath scheme is simply a move towards contractualising the forces as those recruited will not be provided with a pension after their tenure,” he said.

The Congress held protest rallies against the scheme in all 243 assembly constituencies of the state.

The BJP also slammed Kumar as party spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla said that people are unwilling to take the insult of the armed forces of India.

“People who insulted the Army, who undermined the Indian armed forces, are now facing the wrath of people. People cannot stand the undermining of Indian security. The entire country has seen how Kanhaiya Kumar stood by Afzal Guru,” Poonawalla said.

Earlier in February, a youth had allegedly tried to throw a “chemical” at the Congress leader during a party programme at the UPCC office in Lucknow when he went to address a ‘Yuva Sansad’ organised by the party during UP assembly elections.

Local Conditions Will Likely Guide Next Phase of Lockdown, Says MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan

May 16, 2020 by www.news18.com Leave a Comment

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday said that local circumstances are likely to dictate the next phase of lockdown as he spoke of the sufferings of the poor and pitched for kickstarting economic activities outside places where the spread of coronavirus infection is high.

Speaking to reporters through a video conference, he also called for coordination among states to ensure that migrant workers are provided transport to reach their homes so that tragedies like the road accident in Uttar Pradesh on Saturday morning that killed 24 of them are avoided.

Huge numbers of migrant workers have been walking hundreds of kilometres from several big cities towards their villages as an extended coronavirus-induced lockdown has made their financial condition precarious.

His government has deployed 1,000 buses to ferry migrant workers and drop those who are from other states at the Madhya Pradesh border point nearest to their destination, Chouhan said, asserting that no labourer will have to walk on roads or be hungry as long as he is in Madhya Pradesh.

The Madhya Pradesh government is also coordinating with states like Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand, from where large numbers of migrant workers hail, so that they are attended to after being dropped at its borders.

With the third phase of lockdown ending on Sunday and Prime Minister Narendra Modi speaking of an “entirely different lockdown-4.0”, Chouhan said the focus now should be on speeding up economic activities while ensuring that COVID-19 is contained.

Poor people and those running small-scale industry are suffering due to extended lockdown, he said.

“We will have to fight the coronavirus and also take measures to kick-start economic activities at a fast pace,” Chouhan said.

Noting that the prime minister has given states a major say in deciding on the nature of the next phase of lockdown, he said local circumstances will dictate it and most activities in green zones, and in orange zones outside containment zones will be allowed.

In red zones, where the spread of coronavirus is highest, economic activities will be guided by strict regulations, he added.

However, crowds will not be allowed to assemble and so places like malls and cinema halls will remain closed. Religious and political congregation will continue to be barred, he said and advised people to celebrate Eid at their homes.

Chouhan said development model will have to change due to COVID-19, and governments will now have to put emphasis on providing employment to people near their homes.

Modi’s call for a “self-reliant India” is a step in this direction, and the Madhya Pradesh government has taken agriculture and labour reforms to boost investment and generate employment for a long term solution.

Asked about the RSS-affiliate Bharatiya Mazdoor Sangh’s strident opposition to the labour reforms brought in by his government, Chouhan asserted that the measures are in the interest of labourers and he will continue to have dialogue with the BMS in this regard.

With the opposition criticising the central government for not taking adequate measures to mitigate the sufferings of migrant labourers, the senior BJP leader strongly defended various decisions of the Centre.

When lockdown was announced from March 25, it was expected that migrant workers will stay at the place of their work, he said.

As it was extended and they began facing financial hardships, they decided to leave for their homes, Chouhan said, noting that COVID-19 was something entire unexpected and nobody knew how things would unfold in the coming days and weeks.

The Centre’s priority was to stop the spread of infection and this is what it did with the lockdown, he said, adding that it has taken several measures to help the poor.

The Madhya Pradesh government has also transferred anywhere from Rs 1000 to Rs 2000 to its poor and spent a total of Rs 13,600 crore on the welfare measures, he said.

With the coronavirus situation in the state showing some improvement of late, Chouhan said the previous Kamal Nath-led Congress government did “nothing” to tackle the disease, and it was only after he took over on March 23 that health infrastructure and capacity were built.

He brushed aside the charge levelled against the BJP for engineering the fall of the Kamal Nath government, saying it was brought down by Congress leaders as it was a “destructive” dispensation that did no good to the state.

Michelin to transfer Russian operations to local management

Synopsis

Michelin suspended its manufacturing activities in Russia on March 15 due to supply difficulties following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine. “It is technically impossible to resume production, due in particular to supply issues, amid a context of general uncertainty,” the company said in a statement.

French tyre maker Michelin said on Tuesday that it plans to hand over its activities in Russia to a new entity under local management by the end of the year.

Michelin suspended its manufacturing activities in Russia on March 15 due to supply difficulties following Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

“It is technically impossible to resume production, due in particular to supply issues, amid a context of general uncertainty,” the company said in a statement.

Michelin has balance sheet exposure of 250 million euros ($265 million) from Russian operations, it said, adding that the transfer would not impact its financial guidance.

The new entity would operate through an independent structure, it added.

Michelin’s sales in Russia represent 2% of total sales and 1% of its global car tyre production, according to the group.
