A Fedora hat that belonged to US singer Michael Jackson, made of wool and lined with silk, is displayed before being put on sale at auction in Paris on Sept. 12, 2023. The hat is among items that will be auctioned at the Drouot Paris auction house on September 26, 2023. The hat sold at an auction in Paris on Tuesday, Sept. 26, 2023, for 77,640 euros ($82,170). PARIS—The hat that Michael Jackson wore just before performing his signature moonwalk dance for the first time sold at an auction in Paris on Tuesday, Sept. 26, for 77,640 euros ($82,170).

The black fedora had been estimated at 60,000 to 100,000 euros by the Hotel Drouot auction house.

It was the highlight among around 200 items of rock memorabilia, though the top price went to a guitar owned by the legendary bluesman T-Bone Walker, at 129,400 euros.

Jackson whipped off the hat while breaking into his hit “Billie Jean” during a televised Motown concert in 1983, at the height of his fame.

Moments later, he showed off what would become his trademark move—the moonwalk, a seemingly effortless backwards glide while appearing to walk forwards.

Music memorabilia has become big business.

Co-organizers Lemon Auction made a splash last year with the sale of the guitar smashed by Noel Gallagher on the night Oasis split up in Paris following a fight with his brother Liam. The instrument went for 385,500 euros.

This month, a series of auctions for items belonging to Freddie Mercury —including the piano on which he composed “Bohemian Rhapsody”—brought in a total of 46.5 million euros for Sotheby’s, attracting bidders from 76 countries.  / ra

College Football QB Power Rankings: Michael Penix Jr. vaults to No. 1 as Pac-12 stars dominate top five

September 27, 2023 by www.cbssports.com Leave a Comment

CBS Sports Graphic

It’s an unprecedented week in the QB Power Rankings with five newcomers to the top 10. It’s the most changeover we’ve had in one week during the season (so, you know, since I began these rankings last year), and it reflects how good this year’s quarterback pool has been. There are too many good options!

I rank 10 excellent quarterbacks every week, and every week I have about five to 10 fan bases yelling at me for not including their guy, who is clearly the greatest QB ever to grace the planet. Apparently, I would know that if I wasn’t an idiot and actually watched the games, which I obviously don’t, according to them.

I certainly know which fan base I’ll hear from the most this week: Penn State.

Drew Allar does not grace this week’s rankings, just like he wasn’t ranked last week or the week before. It’s not that I don’t like him, because I do. It’s that, as good as Allar has been and as good as Penn State has looked as a whole, Allar doesn’t stack up as well statistically as you might think. Since nobody ever believes me, here’s a table for you to ignore when yelling at me about how wrong I am.

Drew Allar Stat Rank (of 125 qualified passers)

Passing Efficiency

149.0

43rd

Completion Rate

67.2%

33rd

Touchdown Rate

6.4%

47th

Interception Rate

0.9%

T-1st

Yards per Attempt

7.2

78th

Yards per Completion

10.8

99th

Air Yards per Attempt

5.5

122nd

EPA per Dropback

0.33

25th

Here’s the good news: While Allar is mostly dinking and dunking, I don’t think it reflects his ability; my gut tells me it’s mostly the efforts of Penn State’s coaching staff trying to protect a young QB. While Olu Fashanu may be one of the best pass-blocking tackles in the country, he can’t block the entire defense by himself. As a whole, Penn State ranks 40th in pressure rate allowed. Yet, despite that, they’re fourth in sack rate allowed. That’s because of Allar. He’s shown the poise and judgment of a QB with much more experience than he has. He doesn’t hold onto the ball. Penn State’s lack of multiple playmakers at the receiver spot plays a role, too. While KeAndre Lambert-Smith has played well, he’s the only player on the team with more than 100 yards receiving through four games.

My theory is Penn State is taking it slowly with Allar and could open things up more as he grows more comfortable in the offense. When they do that, and he plays well, he’ll likely join these rankings. Or he might not. As I said, there are a lot of really good QBs across the country this year, so this list isn’t easy to crack.

QB Power Rankings

1
Michael Penix Jr. Washington Huskies QB

I couldn’t hold off any longer. As was the case when I put Quinn Ewers here after Texas’ win over Alabama, this has nothing to do with my feelings for Caleb Williams. This is strictly about Penix being the head of a flame-throwing dragon known as the Washington Huskies. There is not a throw Penix can’t make right now. He’s lighting everybody up. (Last Week: 4)
2
Caleb Williams USC Trojans QB

USC messed around with Arizona State on Saturday, but as he’s known to do, Williams made plays when he had to late to put the game away. He also survived a snap to the groin. You have to love a QB tough enough to battle through the adversity of a football to the groin. That’s grit, folks. (1)
3
Bo Nix Oregon Ducks QB

Nix and Oregon took it personally. He completed 28 of his 33 passes for 276 yards and three touchdowns while rushing for a fourth in Oregon’s decimation of Colorado. Of course, he also threw his first interception of the season, but we’ll forgive him for it. It’s one thing to throw a pick when trying to win a game, it’s another when your team is cruising and you’re taking shots. (6)
4
Quinn Ewers Texas Longhorns QB

The most impressive thing about the performance of Ewers and Texas this week wasn’t the statistics or even the final score. Yes, Ewers averaged 12.7 yards per attempt while completing nearly 80% of his passes, but it was the intensity with which the Longhorns played. This program has played up or down to its competition for years, but on Saturday, it looked like a team that has learned if you want to be the best, you play like it every week. (5)
5
Cameron Ward Washington State Cougars QB

Any time you lead your team to a Pac-2 conference championship like Ward did, you will break into the top 10. Ward has been incredible this season. He came to Pullman, Washington, with a lot of hype last year but was a bit up and down. Not this season, where he’s up and up and up some more. Ward had his best game of the season against Oregon State, throwing for 404 yards and four touchdowns as the Cougars beat the Beavers 38-35. (NR)
6
Tyler Van Dyke Miami (FL) Hurricanes QB

Van Dyke isn’t returning to the rankings because he was incredible against Temple. I’m simply showing respect for the consistency he’s shown all season. While the five touchdowns against Texas A&M were the high point, TVD is fourth nationally in passing efficiency and has been putting on a passing clinic weekly. (NR)
7
Jordan Travis Florida State Seminoles QB

Travis looked as if he were playing with one arm tied behind his back against Clemson, and considering his sore shoulder, he kind of was. While it wasn’t his best game statistically, Travis still led the Seminoles to a huge road win against their primary competition in the ACC. Say what you want about Clemson being 2-2, it’s still one of the best defenses in the country. When he had to make plays against it, Travis delivered. (9)
8
Kyle McCord Ohio State Buckeyes QB

I originally had Sam Hartman here but swapped him out for McCord. It felt fitting seeing how McCord went on the road and outplayed Hartman in his house. McCord didn’t throw a touchdown in Ohio State’s win over Notre Dame, but he made plenty of huge throws late in the game to help the Buckeyes win. Like with Jordan Travis above, it doesn’t always have to be pretty as long as you get the job done. (NR)
9
Spencer Rattler South Carolina Gamecocks QB

Listen, South Carolina is 2-2 and it’s lost to the two best teams it’s played, but have you seen Rattler this year? The Gamecocks have won those two games because of him and he’s the sole reason they weren’t blown out by either North Carolina or Georgia. He’s made huge strides this season and is playing more consistently than ever before while taking an absolute beating behind a bad offensive line. He’s a warrior. (NR)
10
Jack Plummer Louisville Cardinals QB

Going out on a limb to say Louisville fans probably don’t miss Scott Satterfield. Not only are they off to a 4-0 start under Jeff Brohm, but they’ve been a fun team to watch on both sides of the ball. And Plummer seems to be settling in. Plummer threw for 388 yards and five touchdowns in a 56-28 win over Boston College, averaging 18.5 yards per attempt. Yes, that’s right, he averaged 18.5 yards per attempt. It might only be for a week, but I’m putting you in these rankings when you average 18.5 yards per attempt in a game. That’s insane. (NR)

Usher Planning ‘Tastefully Dressed’ Pole Dancers During 2024 Super Bowl Halftime Show

September 27, 2023 by www.breitbart.com Leave a Comment

A source close to pop singer Usher claims he intends to have “tastefully dressed” pole dancers as part of his 2024 Super Bowl Halftime show.

The “DJ Got Us Falling In Love” singer often features stripper-styled dancers and pole dancers in his stage shows in Las Vegas and apparently he wants to bring that same aesthetic to the NFL. But he also seems to understand that half naked pole dancing strippers is not exactly a fitting style of entertainment for the NFL’s family-friendly big game.

“Usher plans on having… pole dancers — dressed in a tasteful manner, of course as well as dancers on roller skates,” a source told PageSix. “He is definitely keeping in mind that his younger fans will be watching.”

“[Usher] just wants to set himself apart and make history as one of the greatest performers to hit the world stage,” the source continued, “Beyoncé, Rihanna, Dr. Dre, Prince and Michael Jackson have all made memorable moments and now that Usher is taking the stage he wants to do something different, unforgettable and over-the-top.”

The singer also intends to launch his next album on Super Bowl Sunday with “Coming Home,” which marks his fist new album since 2016.

“t’s an honor of a lifetime to finally check a Super Bowl performance off my bucket list. I can’t wait to bring the world a show unlike anything else they’ve seen from me before. Thank you to the fans and everyone who made this opportunity happen. I’ll see you real soon,” he wrote.

The NFL insists that Usher’s show will be a show “for the history books.”

“Usher is an icon whose music has left an indelible mark on the cultural landscape throughout his career, we couldn’t be more excited to have him headline this year’s Apple Music Super Bowl Halftime Show,” said Seth Dudowsky, the head of music for the NFL. “We look forward to working with Usher, Roc Nation and Apple Music to bring fans another Halftime Show for the history books.”

Several Super Bowl Halftime shows have sent viewers complaining. In 2012, rapper M.I.A. came under fire when he flipped the audience the bird during his part in Madonna’s halftime show.

But the most controversial show of all occurred in 2004 when singer Justin Timberlake ripped away co-star Janet Jackson’s breast cup on her costume to reveal her bare right breast festooned with a nipple ring. The incident was infamously dubbed the “Super Bowl wardrobe malfunction.”

The act ended up getting Jackson fired a week later from the Grammy telecast.

In 2018, Timberlake said that he has apologized and “made peace” with Jackson over the controversial show.

Super Bowl LVII will be played in Las Vegas on Feb. 11, 2024.

MANILA, Philippines–Another international pageant titleholder is heading to the Philippines, with reigning Miss Supranational Andrea Aguilera scheduled to visit next month.

The international pageant announced this on social media Wednesday, Sept. 27, showing a photo of the queen with “Philippines” prominently displayed.

Aguilera , the first Ecuadorian woman to capture the Miss Supranational crown, won in the pageant’s 14th edition held in Poland in July. Pauline Amelinckx from the Philippines finished second in the competition.

The Belgian-Filipino model and host was appointed Miss Supranational Philippines after finishing in the Top 3 of the 2023 Miss Universe Philippines pageant in May, her third time to compete in the said national contest.

Upon Amelinckx’s homecoming in August, Miss Universe Philippines National Director Shamcey Supsup-Lee proclaimed her as the first titleholder of The Miss Philippines Culture and Heritage Celebration .

The Miss Supranational organization said Aguilera will be in the Philippines from Oct. 22 to 26 to “visit some social and charitable initiatives” and to attend the final shows of The Miss Philippines and Mister Pilipinas Worldwide.

The two searches will hold back-to-back final competition shows at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City on Oct. 24. Twenty-one ladies are competing in The Miss Philippines, while 17 men are participating in the Mister Pilipinas Worldwide contest.

Both searches will serve as culminating events of the first-ever “The Filipino Festival” celebration next month, and are presented by Kemans. The winners will each receive a Wuling mini electric vehicle and a custom-made trophy exclusively designed by Jef Albea. /ra

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Rishi Sunak’s dithering over inheritance tax commands the full attention of Prince Harry

September 27, 2023 by www.dailymail.co.uk Leave a Comment

Rishi Sunak ‘s dithering over the possible abolition of inheritance tax commands the full attention of Prince Harry .

Although living in California , he is officially domiciled in the UK.

Any inheritance he might have received from the Queen and Prince Philip and, in due course, his father could be taxable.

Should he change his domicile, he would need to sever most ties with the UK.

The advantage for him is the absence of a US federal inheritance tax. Only six states impose their own. California isn’t one of them.

Rishi Sunak’s dithering over the possible abolition of inheritance tax commands the full attention of Prince Harry (pictured on Friday)

The late Queen, to avoid any inheritance tax, is believed to have left everything to Charles with a separate set of instructions as to whom she wishes to be given what.

That way the taxman can’t get his pound of flesh. In 1993 then PM John Major agreed that bequests made from sovereign to sovereign were exempt from inheritance tax.

However, there is no legal obligation on Charles to carry out his mother’s wishes when passing on bequests.

So it could be up to William eventually to decide whether to pass on any of his father’s largesse he might leave to Harry. With fraternal relations in the freezer, it might not be a foregone conclusion.

Whispers that BBC Radio 4 Today’s Amol Rajan doesn’t get on with fellow presenters Nick Robinson, Martha Kearney and Mishal Husain have been firmly dismissed by the multi-tasking Rajan.

‘The idea that this is some hotbed of tension and difficulty is wrong,’ he tells Radio Times.

‘I really like Nick, I respect him. It’s the same with Martha and Mishal.’

But then, in a Bridge Too Far comment, he adds: ‘I’m full of unashamed love for Today. I’m also full of love for the BBC.’ Steady Amol.

Reprising her role as Doctor Who’s assistant, Catherine Tate, pictured, alarms Tardis aficionados by admitting she is not a fan.

‘No I am not,’ she says. ‘I don’t understand it. It is probably not childish enough for me. I think my comprehension is probably a bit too low for sci-fi. It just baffles me.’

And she doesn’t even watch it, saying: ‘I had no idea they even carried on when David Tennant and I left.’

Shouldn’t the name of her character Donna Noble be changed to Don’t Know Noble?

Rupert Everett says his days of describing Madonna as ‘a whiny old barmaid’ and Julia Roberts as ‘smelling vaguely of sweat’ are over.

‘I can’t any more,’ he says, ‘It’s just too exhausting. And too terrifying. You have to be incredibly careful now.’

Too late to make amends to Michael Jackson, RIP. Rupe said he ‘looked like a character from Shrek’.

University Challenge viewers’ sympathies were with announcer Roger Tilling, who this week faced the nameplate for a Warwick student that read AKARAPONGPISKADI.

‘This is a wonderful, beautiful Thai surname,’ wailed Roger in a tweet. ‘But just bear with me while I go off and have a quick cry…’
